The lead singer was a partially blind German war refugee. His father a soldier killed in Russia. An incredible story of perseverance by his widowed mother who struggled to come to Canada to give her son better opportunities…which he found. He overcame many childhood and teen obstacles from vision to language issues and earned his success.
How weird would it be if ...like....her grandfather killed the singers father? Ooohhhh.......
Thanks for that background on John Kay. I figured there HAD to be some German connection with a name like Steppenwolf! He was declared legally blind, I knew that much about him.
Fair play
The craziest struggle was by the first Nations people surviving in a very racist Canada ..... I remember in my community so much hate towards the indigenous people and as a white man I never understood it...but that was Winnipeg 1970 lol
He was extremely light sensitive, color blind and had poor vision.
Yes , what I remember the family was from East Prussia, which was the most easterly part of Germany which the Russians invaded first and forced out all the people who survived the bombings.
Now a part of Russia still, called Kalliningrad. Horrible way to start life.
What a great year 1969. Best music ever 💓 💖
Steppenwolf was a great band in the late sixties early seventies. "Magic Carpet Ride" is also a must listen from this band, but they had lots of great songs.
Never could pick between em, been trying for 54 years!
pick mmm both bro....@@petegregory517
One of the all-time feel good songs of the rock era. Never grows old. I was a kid when this came out, but made me want to be an outlaw biker, at 11 years old!
The film clip contains scenes from the motion picture Easy Rider (1969). The song Born to Be Wild was featured in the movie's soundtrack. Seen here are the late Peter Fonda (stars and stripes helmet), the late Dennis Hopper (hat) and Jack Nicholson (gold helmet).
In 1969 I lived in a hippie commune in New Mexico like the one in Easy Rider
Late '60's early '70's..... The Best !!!
One of the great classic songs from the '60s!
this song was used in a BAZILLION movies & T.V, shows !!
The best part of your music video reactions is when we can see that you're obviously getting into sing, really feeling it. It's a beautiful thing to see!
Steppenwolf was the first concert I ever saw. Awesome. The energy that came out from those guys was off the charts.
Same with me. Steppenwolf was the headliner along with Three Dog Night and the Grass Roots. September 12, 1969
They played at my high school three or four times. They were called Sparrow or the Sparrows & started as Jack London & The Sparrows. I talked to John Kay between sets one night, He told me when they came back to Toronto, they'd be at Maple Leaf Gardens. ( It was Varsity Stadium).
Hey, me too. 1969 😊
I saw Steppenwolf in Reno Nevada in the early 1980s.
They sang all of their hits except for The Pusher.
They weren't allowed to yell god damn into the microphone inside the casino..which was one of the lyrics to that song.
Steppenwolf was a group of Canadians that formed a rock band down in LA in 1967. They only lasted a few years. Two other songs of theirs are popular with reviewers like you, “Magic Carpet Ride”, and “The Pusher”. I remember a song title “Sookie Sookie” but can’t say that got a lot of play time on the radio when I was in High School.
John, Jerry and Goldy were from Canada, Michael and Rushton from California. They were around from 67-72, regrouped in 74-76, then Kay hit the road in 80 as "John Kay & Steppenwolf". "Sookie Sookie" was getting airplay until the Bible Belt people complained about the lyrics, then it dropped off the playlists.
Thanks for adding the details!
This is pure Americana. The open road. The heavy metal thunder of a custom bike. And the adventure that lies ahead. It's rock-n-roll. It's freedom. It's Born to Be Wild !!
Lmao, their Canadian
@@shaynewest8757 I always thought Canada is a huge part of America - in this case North America. The continent - of course - not the United States ;)
this is such motivating tune! upstate ny, blizzard of'96, Sheraton hotel...myself, 50 co workers, and 300+guests snowed in for days. we worked 15 hr shifts to feed em all. we were down to a pot luck menu, when we got word the roads would re open in the morn. posted a sign"dining room closed at 8pm, out of food" by 8:05pm, kitchen was spotless and we were ALL in the lounge bar celebrating our hard work and "survival". all of us cooks got on stage and did karioke to this tune. my first and only time. the crowd went nuts when we finished. i think we nailed it! (or maybe it was just the Huge amount of booze being consumed by all} loved your reaction...thanks for the memory
Started a bazillion road trips, I had my share!
They were showing a movie clip for that song.
Easy Rider..
Yup, brain freeze on my part. I looked at the lead and drew a black. Man, I'm getting old.@@robertaxel
@@protonneutron9046 I know the feeling well...
Very famous and iconic song!
One of the best songs ever! She doesn't realize about the giant stars in the video.
CLASSIC!! It's in every action/adventure movie it seems. It's great for every road trip.
I got to see them live in Miami in 1969. Great concert.
IN this song they have the line "Heavy Metal Thunder". It's been noted that line is the inspiration for the term "Heavy Metal" used to describe the music genre.
Yeah. That's how it is. But, most people don't know it. And others say it was because of a magazine article. But it's because of this song.
This was one of the first anti-war movies
"easy rider"
good days...miss them
That footage is from the movie "Easy Rider".
Steppenwolf and the Doos were my favorite bands in the 60s.
54 years ago and Jack Nicolson (gold football helmet) is still living.
Steppenwolf was a classic rock band who had many great hits. The singer, john Kay, was from East Germany and was a WW2 refugee who escaped Europe and migrated to Canada.
How? it seems like he'd have been a baby in WWII.
@@kentclark6420 born in 1944 , him and his war widowed mother made it thru the then fence that separated East and West Germany in early '49 . They then moved to Canada in '58 .
This band was my favorite when I was a young boy. I went to their concert when I was only 8 years old. It was real hippie days. That was film from the movie Easy Rider
This song created the genre of heavy metal with the line Heavy Metal Thunder
Their great in concert
I worked for years with a guy who was a biker in his off hours. He loved this song.
Hi, Kerry. It's been many years since I first saw the movie 'Easy Rider' and did see it a couple of more times after that. Others were quick to point out that Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper not only starred in the movie but were also behind the scenes as a producer and director respectively. Thanks for sharing 👍
Next up Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf, for more of a Psychedelic sound.
Next you need to hear Magic Carpet Ride. That's my fav tune from Steppenwolf.
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
In whatever comes our way
Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
I like smoke and lightnin'
Heavy metal thunder
Racing with the wind
And the feeling that I'm under
Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born
Born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
In whatever comes our way
Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born
Born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
Try listening to "Magic Carpet Ride" Gotta hear that one😁
My Dad, now 84 years, saw this film, in 1969. He was just finished his service in the US Air Force. My Dad was then ‘Concervative’ in his politics, like his parents. “Easy Rider” fascinated my Dad. He had the album. He was mostly a fan Classical, like Bach. When my brother and I were teenagers, and “easy rider” returned to cinema, mid 1980’s, we went as a family. My Parents were good at guiding and taking us, and educating us. My Mom, if you said getting in the car, “Get you motor running” could tell the next line, with a smile.
BORN TO BE WILD !!!!!!! 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🌻💛💙🇺🇦
My all time favorite rock song. And like a lot of guys, I bought a Harley-Davidson motorcycle because of Easy Rider and Born to be Wild.
Micheal Monarch(guitar player) was in high school when Steppenwolf recorded this.his nasty rhythm chops are still a marvel today
17 years old
My First track that I play when I jump on my road glide special.
Me too 😊
I saw this film when it came out. This song was a huge hit at the time.
It always cracks me up seeing Jack Nicholson riding pillion in a football helmet.
Beautiful song and beautiful woman listening to it 💕
The name "Steppenwolf" comes from the title of a book by Hermann Hesse, which he wrote in 1927. The book was popular with the counterculture of the 1960s.
Read it in German - long time ago.
That scene was from the movie Easy Rider.Great movie, you should watch maybe even have a reaction to it.✌
I love your very appropriate peace sign icon!
"Born to be Wild," was the anthem of the American 60's.
I like the way you rock!
Hi Kerry, I'm Marshall and I'm from Scotland. If you love rock music and guitars and drums, look no further than ACDC at River Plate and check out the most influential band ever in Pink Floyd. Their concerts are phenomenal. If you love light shows, you will love them at their Pulse concert. The crowd at River Plate for ACDC was 200,000. You must watch them.
Great reaction! This is a classic...
The Year, 1968. Dennis Hopper was driving his '63 Chevy Impala through the Topanga Canyon and listening to the car's AM radio. This tune came on for the first time over an LA radio station. Immediately Dennis knew this tune would be for his "little motorcycle movie." Peter Fonda went for this tune, as well. Jim Leonard built the absolute best ER replica machines. Choppers por vida.
Ya Ya I have done this ride many times..I hope you can this summer across America...see the old route 66 and off the main roads places...stay in cheap motels...
This song and movie were a big part of American pop culture back in 1969.
I remember seeing a lot of bikers wearing that stars and stripes helmet back then.
Seems she enjoyed it but you can't really absorb the depth of it just listening once. If you lived through it it mean far more to us old guys. Her dad was born in 1969. I was 20 when her dad was born. Time flies!
Thanks for your reaction. I was lucky to watxh Steppenwolf live in the mid 90's--Magic carpet ride is another of their very well known hit, if you're interested. Have a nice day.
You have to listen to Radar Love (Golden Earring ) for your driving music
Oh yes! That's one of my favorites!!!
You must catch Easy Rider a great movie with some top songs. The passenger riding behind Peter Fonda is Jack Nicholson in an early role. A classic movie of its time
My fav group of the late 60s band when it comes to their political and social commentary .They were the first stoner band who made a song about the US Gov throwing people in jail for t h c cannabis use called Don't Step on the Grass Sam and another song Monster about the breakdown in American society in the late 1960s..
This footage is from the movie “easy rider” it’s a good watch.
Yes Kerry, listen when driving but make sure you don't get too carried away and keep both hands on the steering wheel. This one and "Radar Love" are the best driving songs.
My Time😊
Great song. Reminds me of my Army , VN days. I miss my motorcycles. Your actions to the video makes the video better ❤❤❤❤
❤
Nick St. Nicholas, a bass player for Steppenwolf (1968-70), was my first bass instructor. Rumor has it he was dismissed for insisting on wearing a pink bunny costume onstage, but I never actually asked him about that!
The energy Angus Young has for someone in their 50's at River Plate in exceptional . I highly recommend you watch their concert . You'll be blown away
A must have for any road trip playlist!
"Born to be Wild" AKA the Hell's Angel's anthem.
That's Peter Fonda in the stars and stripes helmet, Dennis Hopper on the other bike, and Jack Nicholson riding behind Peter. Scenes are from the movie "Easy Rider".
The movie in itself tells a sadder story. This is from a pretty classic movie called "easy rider".
This song celebrates the Harley-Davidson U.S. lifestyle of freedom on the road. It is a quintessential
The year your father was born - ouch, that hurt. I was born before that. That made me feel really old...
Kerry, much if not all of that video was filmed here in my home state of New Mexico. 50 years later it still looks the same! You MUST visit New Mexico! Santa Fe and Taos would be great choices. So much wide open country and also forested mountains here You'll Love it. Stay away from Albuquerque were I live. There's a lot to see in Albuquerque but the city has become dangerous. There's so much to see all across New Mexico from White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns in the south all the way to the Colorado state line. And you must also see the San Juan Mountains of South Western Colorado! Totally mind blowing mountain mountain country!
Absolutely agree. I was born and raised in Northern New Mexico Farmington
@@greggrimsley5337 Right on man 👍
Happy that a beautiful Russian girl has come to America! On behalf of American men everywhere I say Welcome!
The first time I heard the term 'heavy metal '
The greatest driving song of all time, and of course "Radar Love"!
In this video the three riders were actors: Billy (director Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) meet inebriate lawyer George (Jack Nicholson)
👍👍👍👍👍
This song is about freedom.
Your beautiful and love watching you move to the music. So happy I found your page
This was the opening song from the movie Easy Rider. You must watch this film to get the most out of this song with its deep cultural which will help you understand Americas hippy generation that still thrives today.
this song coined the phrase ' heavy metal ' . saw the movie 2 times in a row when it came out in '69. i was 16 and those days you could sit in the theater for a 2nd watch - they did not clear the theater after every show.
Kerry, "Easy Rider" is another film you ought to watch. It kind of gives you the counterculture vibe of the late 1960's in the U.S. Jack Nicholson also has a small but very memorable role in the film.
Another Beautiful Reaction, Thank You For That.
Steppenwolf have a number of great song's you might enjoy.
As probably other's have mentioned, This video is from the movie Easy Rider.
If you like, Check out the movie it was really good back then & Is still great with the right mindset
Take Care Kerry
Love to take you on a ride!!!!!
Peter Fonda. Dennis hopper. Jack Nicholson in that video. Wow.
Should watch the movie, Easy Rider. Very Cultural at the Time
somewhere there needs to be a planet where all the women are Kerry
Great review of a great song. Thank you.
My goodness..... This Russian is delicious, wow..... Love you Kery!???
The scenes are from Easy Rider (1969) which cemented in the minds of many the great generational divide of the 1960s. In the later words of Henley and Frey "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969." Or as John Lennon said shortly before he was murdered "Weren't the 70s a drag?"
Speeding ticket song👍🏻🎼
Great song Kerry 😊
The guy with fringe jacket is Dennis Hopper. Kater on they hook up with Jack Nicholson.
I prefer Jackson Brown's "Running on Empty" for motorcycle songs
Kerry the video you saw was from the movie easy rider it starred Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson. It is a great movie I suggest you watch it. The song was included in the movie.
Born to be wild theme song for movie easy rider
YOU ARE PLAYING SOME GOOD SONG KERRY😎
Easy Rider was one of the biggest hippy-cult classic films of the 60s. Like others have said, you should see the movie if you get the chance. RIP Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Peter had a yacht berthed across from our trimaran in Hawaii. We'd see him take his boat out in the summer sometimes.
I reckon you'd like The Masters Apprentices It's Because I Love You and Jimmy Little's Bring Yourself Home To Me. Both are extraordinary
