Great reaction, guys! "Heavy Metal" was a term used a lot by Beat writer William S. Burroughs in the early-mid '60s - in some instances he used it to describe certain characters, but in others he also used it to describe whacked-out, hardcore drug addiction. It's not clear if Steppenwolf knew that, but the Beat writers were incredibly popular/influential with the '60s rockers, so not impossible. After Steppenwolf used the term in this song, supposedly, film critic Lester Bangs was the first to use the term to describe a particular type of music, and he compared Sabbath's music to Burroughs's writing (there are other arguments that different writers for Cream Magazine came up with it first - but either way, you guys should totally track down some old Lester Bangs reviews, one of the great rock critics of all time). Anyway, the term seems to have been born out of a mix of ideas and musical styles in the late '60s/early '70s, when the metal was a lot different than it is today!
I'm good. Happy belated birthday to your beautiful wife too again. Looking forward to things cooling down with DEATH BUG 19 so traveling can happen. After the last 2-3 years, a nice relaxing trip abroad is a heavenly thing to think about.

John Kay lived a very interesting life he and his mother when he was 5 years old escaped over the wall in Germany later going to Canada also he was nearly blind but you couldn't tell it I shouldn't say was I think he's still alive in fact I think they still tour. At the time we didn't call it had a heavy metal we called it hard rock
"Heavy Metal Thunder" was referring to high performance cars and motorcycles in this, not music...but it a widely held belief, this song is the birth place of the reference "Heavy Metal" referring to the music.
Steppenwolf is the reason my friends and I all had a "Big Muff" as our first guitar pedal. One of my all time fave bands with many deep cuts. Canadian gold. Also: Alex's analogies are amazing.
Their drummer's brother wrote it after seeing a poster in the window of a motorcycle shop that said "Born to Ride". Singer, John Kay before Steppenwolf worked as a solo folk/blues act in a small Toronto club where he also helped in the kitchen and with cleanup. So, pretty close guesses on that. Rushton Moreve's bass on that song is incredible. Only guitarists, John Kay and Michael Monarch are still with us, sadly.
I agree! Hammond organs are incredible heavy so difficult to tour with and tubes aren’t so easy to come by these days. There aren’t so many players anymore. Back in the day, kids were made to take piano lessons and most churches had organs. The culture just doesn’t encourage playing the way it once did.
When they get around to Zappa Zombie Woof would be a great cut. Montana from the same album is another great showcase for Zappa's freaktastic musical vision
I have recently been watching a lot of reaction videos from people near your ages, mostly just enjoying seeing new people discovering the classics i grew up loving. The best part of your channel (IMO) is the lack of constant pausing. You save your comments for the end. Beautiful, even when they rewind a few seconds, they have ruined the flow of the song. It's not the same experience. Keep up the great work, and have you considered expanding beyond 60's, 70's, and 80's rock? Try Howling Wolf "Smokestack Lighting"
We hitchhiked ALL THE TIME, as teenage girls. Crazy to think about that now!😳🥺Things were different then. Yes there were psychos, killers, etc. we just didn’t worry or think about it. CRAZY!
This song was the first time "heavy metal" was mentioned as a musical genre; the first heavy-metal song, however, is generally regarded as being "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer. I recommend making a reaction video of "Summertime Blues".
@@reidwigen2817 He said "generally regarded". You can definitely find people who will name Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer as the start of HM. Others say Link Wray's rumble. I'm in agreement with you that if there's an "official" start of heavy metal, it's Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. And yeah, your definitely right about the term in this song not being about a musical genre.
I think Iron Butterfly's first album was called 'Heavy' from 1967 I believe. Heavy Metal as we know it now was definitely formed by Sabbath, I think any bands that came before fell into the rock or hard rock category after Sabbaths 1st album.
It is amazing that you guys have reached college age without hearing many of the songs you review. Classic rock stations have played the songs over and over since they were released in the 60s and 70s.

Intro/Sweet Jane by Lou Reed from his early '70's Rock n Roll Animal classic live album. Or the whole album, for that matter. Those guitars, man, you'll be in the sauce the whole time. He and his mother arrived in Toronto when he was 13. I'm listening and I still don't hear an accent.
@@BDUBZ49 I listened too and didn't hear an accent, but Alex did, and he was CORRECT. he has better ears than us!
Oh my goodness!!! I can sing every lyric of this song 50 years later 😆😆 They played this song ALL THE TIME on the radio 💜
Gentlemen, you need this in your life >>> studio version of Deep Purple - Space Truckin' . Big hit for them. Also Woman From Tokyo , another hit.
John Kay... decades of amazing music and his hard hitting vocals... the original Rock God !
😎🎙
One of the most kick ass guitar sounds ever.
More Steppenwolf please ! "Rock Me", "Move Over", "Hey Lawdy Mama"
"The pusher" has to be next as you enter a very deep Steppenwolf rabbit hole.
It's only been in like a thousand commercials as well as movies and TV shows. The royalties for this song alone should be crazy.
We did a parody of this song for my sister called, "Born To Be With Child." (She's always pregnant)
Are you in Alabama?
Is she Catholic? LOL
My band in the 80’s did a soft version of this in a nursing home and sang Born To Be Mild changing the chords and melody to E major scale. It was a paying gig.
That's a cute idea! Any chance it's on video?
@@Magravated thanks but nope.
Steppenwolf's music made me fall in love with the Hammond B3 and Leslie speaker combination.
"His voice sounds like an argument between the cooks in a midwestern diner" -- damn, that's awesome and hilarious! Spot on.
You haven’t heard this song before? Am I old? I must be old now. Wow, guys. Thanks for pointing out I’m past my prime. The joy is now gone. Well done.
i'm old too
I'm only in my mid-20s, and I can't believe they haven't heard this song!
"Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space" Cool Lyrics 1968
One of Greatest songs ever written it has inspired generations.
GOOOD MORNING FAMILY!!!!
How’s you J?
I'm good. Happy belated birthday to your beautiful wife too again. Looking forward to things cooling down with DEATH BUG 19 so traveling can happen. After the last 2-3 years, a nice relaxing trip abroad is a heavenly thing to think about.
Hi John 👋
@@Shadowrider1872 I know mate. Be good to get away and taste a different culture. She had the best birthday ever... she was with me. 🤣😂🤣😂
Such a truly famous and epic song. It was amazing hearing it live.
Another one from the late 60's Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man. It's different !
Such a great classic rock tune, dudes! This one..& their: Magic Carpet Ride..& The Pusher..R forever pt of the soundtrack of the 60's..& still hold up 2day. Thx 4 this one guys!
Steppenwolf "The Pusher" add it to the "Easy Rider" montage. Lol
Dual reaction.
Pusher - Steppenwolf (circa 69)
Soundtrack " Easy Rider"
Pusherman - "Curtis Mayfield" (circa 72)
Soundtrack. " Superfly"
Both Epic
John Kay lived a very interesting life he and his mother when he was 5 years old escaped over the wall in Germany later going to Canada also he was nearly blind but you couldn't tell it I shouldn't say was I think he's still alive in fact I think they still tour. At the time we didn't call it had a heavy metal we called it hard rock
John Kay is a German-born Canadian rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist known as the frontman of Steppenwolf
"Heavy Metal Thunder" was referring to high performance cars and motorcycles in this, not music...but it a widely held belief, this song is the birth place of the reference "Heavy Metal" referring to the music.
"The Pusher" would be a great deep cut follow-up.
I agree but I wouldn't call it a deep cut. Definitely not as big as the other two though.
@@ericzeller9730 not a deep cut to you and me but definitely a deep cut to a casual rock fan.
Steppenwolf is the reason my friends and I all had a "Big Muff" as our first guitar pedal. One of my all time fave bands with many deep cuts. Canadian gold.
Also: Alex's analogies are amazing.
Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" is the definition of an "S' rating. An anthem of the generation.
Steppenwolf - "The Pusher".
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘
Nothing else.
Steppenwolf carved out their own place in rock! Next up, “Pusherman”
DUDES!!!! Finallllly!!!
This particular song's been in so many movies and commercials I feel like everybody's heard bits 🎵🎶🎸🎤
One of the most iconic rock and roll songs ever ☮️
I was 11 the summer this came out. It absolutely blew my mind.
Two instruments we don't hear enough in "rock" music anymore : organs and harmonicas. I said it.
And drums are all synthesized drum machine which should be a capitol crime
Because parents no longer yell, "go to your room and play with your organ!"
I agree! Hammond organs are incredible heavy so difficult to tour with and tubes aren’t so easy to come by these days. There aren’t so many players anymore. Back in the day, kids were made to take piano lessons and most churches had organs. The culture just doesn’t encourage playing the way it once did.
Need more cowbell also
I'd go ahead and throw saxophone in there too.
SCREAMING Night Hog!!!!!!
Morning gents. Great choice, this is the quintessential Steppenwolf song. I'd love to see you listen to Zomby Woof by Zappa.
'Zomby Woof' may be my favorite guitar solo of all time. The most filthy guitar tone I've ever heard, it's like a zomby woof is after me.
Here I'm is....
When they get around to Zappa Zombie Woof would be a great cut. Montana from the same album is another great showcase for Zappa's freaktastic musical vision
@@kenjohnston1257 Absolutely. Montana is one of my favorite Zappa songs.
@@kenjohnston1257 yes yes yes!
Genre HARD ROCK! I love them..John Kay's voice is totally unbelievable
I recommend George Thorogood, "Bad To The Bone."
That song reminds me of the opening scene in Terminator 2 Judgement Day.
And before that the first film it was in was the opening scenes to Christine.
Also in Talk Radio iirc.
This song reminds me of the days when teenage guys would hitchhike around the country, a sight seldom seen these days.
Been there done that :)
We hitchhiked ALL THE TIME, as teenage girls. Crazy to think about that now!😳🥺Things were different then. Yes there were psychos, killers, etc. we just didn’t worry or think about it. CRAZY!
Yup, remember those days. Covered 38 States, Canada and Mexico that way (68-74)
Steppenwolf" Rock Me",is a wild one .
This song was the first time "heavy metal" was mentioned as a musical genre; the first heavy-metal song, however, is generally regarded as being "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer.
I recommend making a reaction video of "Summertime Blues".
Nah son. Black Sabbath Black Sabbath. Summertime blues not even close. Also, this song was NOT referring to musical style, but the motorcycle
My life’s Steppenwolf mission will be fulfilled if you react to their best song, Rock Me. Killer percussion solo and banging bass.
Also, a crime against humanity that they are not in the RRHOF
This was a really cool song back in 68. I was a preteen at the time, but with 2 older siblings got into th ed good music at an early age.
Its hard to get more classic than Born To Be Wild. I have heard the song a zillion times throughout my life. I can remember being a kid when this song first came out, and it sounded so fresh and cool back then, and even today it has something special. I'm surprised Andy didn't say how he could listen to it on a road trip. just don't do it in a Prius lol.
"It's Never Too Late" is a deep cut classic, lyrics and all... also "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Rock Me" and "The Pusher".
This song feels like your climbing a mountain and you hit the top right before you drop back down for the chorus.
I'm 55 years old. "You guys don't get out much do you?" But, appreciate your efforts in broaden your music taste.
Do Sookie Sookie next. Steppenwolf always makes me think of the desert. Maybe it's because of Easy Rider.
This song has been in a million movies. Its the Bikers anthem. I've always considered these guys the first heavy metal band. He's from Germany. Need to do the Pusher, Jupiter's Child, Screaming Night Hog. Truly one of the best bands ever.
Intro/Sweet Jane by Lou Reed from his early '70's Rock n Roll Animal classic live album. Or the whole album, for that matter. Those guitars, man, you'll be in the sauce the whole time. Or more Rolling Stones---you guys haven't really done much of their gigantic catalogue. Resume w/ Brown Sugar, I'm thinking. Or Honky Tonk Woman. Or It's Only Rock n Roll. Have u guys done T Rex at all? One of the best voices ever, and a great sound overall. Try 20th Century Boy, Bang a Gong, Jeepster. Love that early glam.
I second Sweet Jane!
Sweet Jane, and their song "Rock and Roll". His earlier band, the Velvet Underground, was great along with John Cale and Nico.
Oh Hellz yeah, Sweet Jane from Rock n Roll Animal!
The rolling stones till the next time we say goodbye, the offical video version
Blood, Sweat and Tears deserve a listen.
Responsible for more speeding tickets than any other song !
First on tape, then cd, now digital. This was always the number one on my playlist. I start every car trip with this pounding on my ears!
