She said something about the seventies was just not as technologically advanced. So true. And of course because of that the music was better. What you heard listening to the music was how it was recorded because there wasn't tech to improve the sound. What you heard on the radio was what you heard when you went to see them live. Just so much talent back then.

Nah you’re both wrong. It’s just a preference of sound. Listen to something like Porcupine Tree Anesthetize Live to hear how incredible something modern and Live can sound. Or for something older, Pink Floyd, who used a lot of amazing sound engineering on their studio albums and can pull it off live as well.
@@frightenedsoul I agree with you. There is a lot of really good music both from earlier days and now. I grew up in the 60s and 70s so this is my era of music. But I can certainly find current music I also really like.

I'll give an example. A few years ago Justin Bieber was the hate figure. Everyone seemed to say his music was crap, unlike the 60s, 70s, 80, depending on the age of the commentator.
I decided to check him out, I'm 75 by the way. I thought his music was pleasant, nice voice. I wouldn't buy it but he kept millions of young girls happy. What on earth is wrong with that?

My late mother always said that when my way older brother and his friends went to see this movie (Easy Rider 1969), they were somehow not quite the same when they got home...

You just watched the credits section of the film "Easy Rider", from 1968. A film you really NEED to see if you want to understand the late 60's and very early 70's. The Vietnam War, Drugs, Hippies, Racism, Authoritarianism, Regionalism, did I mention Drugs? Oh yeah, and Motorcycles, and great music throughout the film. The first true Rock and Roll soundtrack.
"Easy Rider" the film came out in the summer of 1969 so this is definitely the original. It was written by Mars Bonfire (aka Dennis Edmonton) but first recorded by Steppenwolf. It has been covered many times.
Easy Rider was a low-budget film that was a blockbuster success starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper but it was the big break for Jack Nicholson in a significant support part that was the outstanding performance and quickly made him a star.
Dennis McCrohan and his brother Jerry changed their stage name to "Edmonton" in honor of their hometown. Jerry was the drummer for Steppenwolf; they had previously been in The Sparrows with bassist Goldy McJohn. When the Sparrows flew to LA (sorry!) McJohn and Jerry joined with singer/keyboardist John Kay to form Steppenwolf, but Dennis decided to go solo as "Mars Bonfire". He still spent time with them, though, so this cover was a natural.

I totally agree with you about the legendary combo Hammond + Leslie. And Steppenwolf (John McGoch) were really good with that! One of my favorites songs of them is Hodge, Podge, Strained Through a Leslie. I wish that combo was more used nowadays.

The movie "Easy Rider" had a huge effect on me and my life direction when it came out in 1969. I went out and bought a 1951 AJS 500 Motor Bike. (All I could afford at the time. I was still at High School. One little problem, hardly worth mentioning but... I didn't know how to ride it. Ha. To get it home I had to turn the bike off at intersections and manually push the heavy bastard across the intersection then get on again. I didn't know how to change gears! My parents freaked out a tad but my father eventually convinced my mother that I should be allowed to keep it. Yes, I quickly learnt to ride.
It was a few years after that when I finally had enough cash to get a 1973 Triumph Bonneville 750. Amazing bike, back then. All because of Steppenwolf and Easy Rider. Cheers.
Easy Rider convinced many people that they needed a motorcycle in their life, including me. Changed the course of my life.

Yes Lex, once again, you nailed it. This is the "older original version", from 1967, and used in that movie in your review, "Easy Rider", from 1969. Very revolutionary for that era. Helped start the counter culture, societal, non-violent, revolution.

This is the classic movie "EASY RIDER". At the end of the movie in the graveyard scene, Toni Basil is nude. She sang the song "MICKY" ..... later on in the 80, a one hit wonder.
John Kay, the vocalist and a guitarist... The 'Driving Force' of Steppenwolf... Once said when asked about the longevity of the song 'Born to Be Wild'... That the reason it has withstood the 'Test of Time', lasted and is still used in commercials, movies, etc. ...

This band brings back memories. They were great live back in the day. I can remember trying to get into their show as a kid presenting the worse fake ID ever, I was like 12. The bouncer looked at my ID and said "That's gotta be the worst fake ID ever, go on in and don't drink to much". What a great show at the Agora Ballroom in the 70's.

Thanks a million for reacting to MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME ! I was 9 when the BEATLES was on Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday night Feb of 64. I knew then music was going to be changed forever, So,, all that music including The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Byrds, The Young Rascals, The Kinks, Hendrix,, etc ...up till the summer of 69 , My brother in law took me to see the movie "EASY RIDER". Wow. I was 13, I had all ready been in trouble with the school because , my hair was touching my ears and collar. Well At the start of the movie Peter Fonda pulls up to the road . Looks at his wristwatch takes it of , then throws it into the dirt ! AS the timekeeper hits the dirt that first crack on the snare drum starts the song....When we got to the car I told my brother in law that after highschool grad I was goin to get me a Harley- Davidson chopper. I graduated in 73. got a job in a car body shop , saved up $1000.00 and bought... bad shape, but running 1957 1200cc Harley-Davidson Panhead. All my friends made fun of me... "look.Zorro gave a thousand bucks for a piece of junk " I told them I would rather push my Hog than ride a rice burner. I still ride that chopper and a 1953 mint condition 1200 Hydra Glide. all because of BORN TO BE WILD ! check out the movie, God Bless

I saw Steppenwolf and Iron Butterfly together in 1969. I was 15 and smoking a pipe packed with some great stuff, 20 feet away from the stage. Every song was longer. This song, Born To Be Wild, Rock Me Baby and The Pusher, then IRON BUTTERFLY.... Extended long.....In-A-Gada-Da-Vida for 45 minutes.......AWESOME

One of the things that give that 70s feel is the Hammond organ. Once you know the sound you will hear it in nearly all of the late 60s - 70s music.
These guys and Deep Purple were jamming with keyboards being part of the jam, not just background sound.

Easy Rider was a great movie, with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Released in 1969, the movie depicted the rebellion of the 60s. Great time, sad time…. All at once. Yes over 50 years ago, but very relevant today. Embrace American history because it’s constantly repeating itself.

The scenes you were watching were from the iconic movie, "Easy Rider." That was Peter Fonda on the famous "Captain America" chopper. Dennis Hopper is the rider of the other bike. The hitchhiker they pick up was a young Jack Nicholson. This recording is the original, and, not surprisingly, the song became somewhat of the anthem for motorcyclists or "Bikers" to this day. Oh. And it is 60s, not 70s, although it is late 60s.
No, the hitchhiker wasn't Jack. That was the Hippy that took them to the commune. They met Jack's character in jail.

The song is '68 and was the 2nd Steppenwolf song in the movie Easy Rider. Before the credits the two main characters, played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, made a drug deal with a character played by legendary record producer/murderer Phil Spector to the tune "The Pusher".
I believe that's where they got the term Heavy Metal from - "Heavy Metal Thunder". Love the singer John Kay - very interesting guy! He was a bad dude and you didn't want to mess with him. He's a great guy since those days and gives back to make this world a better place. Lots of respect to him. Very smart and articulate guy.

Steppenwolf had a lot of tremendous music. The certainly had their fair share of "hit" records but their albums were killer from start to finish. John Kay even wrote and performed a song with Lowell George of Little Feat.
I sang this and "Magic Carper Ride " in the rock band "Tyne Kyte" back in 1970.it was a favorite for dancers. Albums from the late '60s.
Their version of "The Pusher" is quite good.

The old school sound is not teched to sound "BETTER". It sounds DIFFERENT because it is the pure sound of the instruments, not a computer generated sound. This was 1968 before sound was manipulated to sound like it does now. I find it lovely to my ears! This among other songs, became a 60s anthem for my generation.
That paul bunyan statue they ride by in the video is still there on stone ave in Tucson Arizona. 51 years laters. Everyday when I see it it reminds me of easy rider
Pretty sure automobile makers used this song in their commercials, like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge Ram etc… as well as other products, and of course many movies you two probably have seen. It’s an iconic song! ✌🏼

This song is where the term "HEAVY METAL" was coined. There was never the term HEAVY METAL before this.
Not originally, the phrase was used in William Burroughs' novel "The Soft Machine" in 1962. 'Heavy Metal' appears to have been first used in a specific music context in the album title "Featuring The Human Host And The Heavy Metal Kids" by the short-lived and almost completely forgotten avant-garde British band "Hapshash and the Coloured Coat".
I would think the Steppenwolf usage would have had more impact alongside the bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Judas Priest who all had members originating from the area of Birmingham; with its long history of 'heavy metal bashing' industry.
What @rocket rabble said, plus the term comes from the periodic table where there's a section named heavy metals.
Lex, the word you're looking for about the sound dynamics is Analog. Instuments were powered and driven thru tube amplifiers and speakers that gives it different warm rich qualities.
Brad, those old school skinny bikes were Harley Davidson "choppers" where the front fork was elongated for long distance cruising and comfort... and style.

The singer, John Kay, was born in eastern Germany. His father was a Werhmacht soldier who was killed on the Russian front. John's mother fled with him to the west and into Canada.

John Kay has a very distinct voice in his vocals. Very few songs can claim to define a generation, but Born to be Wild is one of them.

This is the original. We used to play it all the time on our City Cafe jukebox while we were shooting pool back in the mid-1970s, b side of record was magic carpet ride.
Easy Rider in the 60s was such a watershed movie. It introduced chopper cycles to the wide world for one thing. And Lex by saying "chorded" may have picked up pn the difference between analog and digital recording.

I think that every biker of a certain age in the universe has heard this anthem, whether you are on a hog on the interstate or battling through driving rain in the UK. This music has been the soundtrack to many dreams of freedom from the rat race. iconic sixties song really made timeless by the film Easy Rider.

1969 brother. It was the top counter culture song. Except for the fact it was out the same time as Jimi Hendrix's last year and Janis Joplins last year. Woodstock was in 1969. Santana put out his first album Abextra. 1969 was the year bruh it was happening. See the movie Easy Rider. It is psychelic music. It is LSD music. When they made the movie Easy Rider they didn't have the budget for a sound track. They asked the artists if they would agree to let them use their music and pay them from royalties from the movie soundtrack album. They got the artists to agree and they movie was the first movie to have a rock 'n' roll soundtrack instead of a sound track made by the typical orchestra (eg John Barry or Henry Mancini). The sound track sold really well and the music added to the ambience of the movie. Easy Rider was a popular counter-culture movie.

What you're hearing is the difference in recording music.
Back then you had to play your instrument to a microphone in the room, even with electric amps. To get more volume was an engineering challenge.
Today you plug your instrument directly into the computer (or nearly) and there's zero loss of signal. To get more volume just mouse drag and move a slider.
Analogue recording did get a lot better though. By the mid 80s the sound quality was as good as you can get, it was just very expensive to achieve that.
@@Xenon0000000000001 very true. And in fact, early midi digital actually seemed to lose some of the dynamic range of the advanced analog recordings of the time. I'm not a pro or anything, that was just my impression.
@@gregvergara7596 The issue with fidelity(dynamic range) in the 80s was that the sound style trends moved to favor a sense of loudness (a lot of 70-80s stereo systems had a "loundness" button) this feel is achieved with compression of the amplitude range, but inherently costs fidelity. The trend became over the top with some late 80s remastered to CD releases; there were a couple of albums that had to recalled and re-re-remastered because the engineers took this compression way too far(and apparently nobody did QC.) and made it all super muddy sounding. One of them was a Rush album iirc, Metallica also had a very compressed release.
