This is their most famous song and my favorite Animals song. The lead singer Eric Burdon was still performing up until just recently. He's currently 82.
Has he retired now,my friend?
Back then I couldn’t believe that sound was coming out of his mouth. He just didn’t seem old enough to produce those lyrics. It’s still a mystery.
Saw them 50 yrs ago at college.
SanFransiscan nights WAS ALSO A GREAT SONG THEY SANG
"Incredible voice". Yes, and he was about 20 when he did it. Amazing how many young British singers could do powerful bluesy music so incredibly well at such young ages.
In our Viking,Norman blood:)
Eric was 23, sounded 53, and looked 13.
Stevie Windwood did it from age 14.
They were more connected to black folks than white Americans at the time. Ain’t it funny? I always said the UK blue eyes had wayyyyyy more soul than white Americans. Just my Afro American Soul Sista Gurl perspective ❤
Why does no one ever talk about how crazy the Organ player goes
A great song, nice pick, they don't make music like this anymore, such a classic.
Thank you for playing the entire song sithout interrupting like so many other people do! You let the whole song go on ! Very patient ! 🤗🤗
Some singers are remember, other singers were EPIC! This sound was not possible without the rest of the band! I love this band.
I think it was 1964 when it was recorded. A powerful song still enjoyed 59 years later.
Number 1 hit and always in the top 25 songs of the rock era
one of the best rock and roll keyboard players....doing a solo on organ in a rock band was unusual back then in 1964.The Animals are one of the most underrated bands in history, they were tighter than the Rolling Stones back in the early days 1964-66. They were very blues and rhythm and blues oriented obviously. The Beatles were friends of theirs on the London scene.
FUN FACT about this song: No one knows who wrote it. Musicologists have tried to track down its origins but it's so old that its origins are lost in the murky mists of time. It may even go back all the way to 17th century England in a form that became known as "Broadside Ballads." If it did originate in England then it probably came to America via some ocean-going traveler who may have sung it here in the U.S. and then others picked it up and it slowly got passed around. Also, if it did originate in England, then someone had to have changed the location of the brothel from its location in England to New Orleans, probably to make the song more relevant to American audiences. That is all speculation, obviously, since no one knows for sure what the original lyrics were in that particular verse. Another interesting thing about the song is that in some versions it's about a man lamenting his experience in the brothel while in other versions it's a woman telling of her trials and tribulations at the brothel. I first heard it by folk singer, Joan Baez, a year or two before the Animals' released their version. In the Animals version the narrator is a man. In the Baez version the narrator is a woman. There is also a version by the legendary folk singer, Huddie (Leadbelly) Leadbetter, that is so different both melodically and lyrically that it's barely recognizable as the same song. Another early rendition of the song was by Bob Dylan about 3 years before the Animals. The story about Dylan stealing the song from folk/blues singer, Dave Van Ronk, is sort of true but also sort of not true. The "sort of true" part is that Dylan did first hear the song being performed by Van Ronk and then recorded it before Van Ronk got a chance to record it. The "sort of not true" part is that no one "owns" that song so you can't "steal" something that is not owned by anyone. And, as far as I'm aware, no one really knows where Van Ronk heard the song in the first place. Back in the 60s a plethora of folk singers were all hanging around in coffee houses in New York's East Village where traditional folk songs were passed around and performed by anyone who wanted to sing them. People didn't cell phones so there was no way to record a song on the spot. So, if some traveler happened to hear a song somewhere, and then moved on to another town and sang the song for another audience he/she might not remember exactly how the lyrics went and would just make up new lyrics to fill in for the lyrics that they couldn't remember. This happened for decades (even hundreds of years in some cases) and that's why there are so many versions of old folk songs. Musicologists sometimes refer to this borrowing, changing, adapting as "the folk process".
I'm surprised the Kingston Trio didn't do it 10 years earlier. They made their name revising and cleaning up old folk songs (and invented a few). It's along the same lines and the same tone as "Tom Dooley".
@@mrcryptozoic817 Interesting thought! It had never occurred to me.
I believe that the soul of the burdon voice also comes from other older times it seems ireal
Have heard the brothel story also.
THANKS!
When this came out in 1964 it was a sound pretty much unlike anything that we had heard before. While they weren’t the first to use a keyboard, the rich keyboard sound really made this song stand out and it wasn’t long before many other groups included it in their band.
Yeah. The keyboard just jumps on you. Not much of a thing before then. One of the 60's top songs. I lived in London from 1962-65. Music changed bigtime.
Hi Kerry, Nice Reaction To An Amazing Song!
I'm Sure You'll Enjoy Other Song's By Them..
It Was Really Cool Seeing You Enjoying It So Much..
This Song Did Exactly What Music Is Suppose To Do,
Touch Your Emotions & Move Us..
In Which It Did With You, Just By Your Smile..
If You Won't Mind Me Saying,
Your Smile Alone Would Light Up Any Room You Enter!
Glad You Enjoyed It & Thank You For Sharing It With Us..
Wishing You All The Very Best, From Western Canada!
One of my favorite songs, their song Don't let me be misunderstood is also a great song!
I was on a ski vacation in Whistler, BC, Canada in the 80's and Eric Burton happened to be performing in a bar there. It was a great show. He had a strong voice.
Still has 40 years later:)
You look marvelous Kerry and such a great reaction! One of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. The animals and Eric Burdon was the best of the best of rock and blues bands at that time.
Man! How young they looked. One of the truly great tracks.
Another great song, sounds as good today as it did in 1964
One of the most popular songs ever. I once looked around online, and I think I found 29 versions of this song. Fun fact, Bob Dylan *stole* this arrangement from Dave VanRonk, and released it just before DVR released his album. So everyone thought it was the other way around. I guess it's appropriate that the Animals had the biggest hit with it ever. And most people forgot Dylan even did it.
Need more Animals tunes?? "It's My Life", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place" to name a few!! :)
Bo Diddly is a good song as well
When listening to this song, it puts me right back in New Orleans. (I'm way over due to go back). The actual "House of the Rising Sun" was in the red-light district called Storyville where most houses of "ill repute" were located. If possible, you should visit New Orleans, especially The Garden District and The French Quarter.
They give tours in NOLA, and they point out The House of the Rising Sun. Nice old New Orleans house in the French Quarter.
Hi, Kerry. It's only been about a year (maybe less) since I last listened to this song by The Animals. Thanks for sharing 👍
P.S. 🎉🥂 Congratulations on reaching the 17K sub mark. You're doing well 👏
Love the animals! ❤ We got to get out of this place
"We Got To Get Out of This Place" - another great song!
That was also one of my favorite songs in the 60`s.
It always brings back so many good memories of where I used to hang out with my friends at their house.
Imagine growing up with music like this. In January '71 I got to see the Animals at a small Ag & Tech College in Upstate New York.
which college if you remember. I'm from St. Lawrence cty.
Best Rock from mid 60s to early 70s. You may have missed it, but thanks for playing it all. Enjoy!
The lead singer`s brother was the one playing the organ Kerry, but sadly he has passed away.
That was my very favorite song in the 60`s!
I love watching your beautiful face and expressions during the song.
And just to let you know, your English is absolutely fantastic. You GO girl!
USA
Ahem, that is the wonderful Alan Price, not related and still alive (81)
Oh, well sorry for the wrong information then.@@KC-gy5xw
This song is driven by the wonderful keyboard playing of Alan Price. He had a solo career for a while to.
The House of the Rising Sun refers to an actual brothel in New Orleans that was popular during the American Civil War through the Post-Reconstruction Era (early 1860s to late 1880s).
this is my favorite song. I first heard this in 2004 when i was 14
Легенды останутся навсегда!!! И будут Легендами - везде!
Another great reaction from you, lovely Kerry. ❤
You might want to listen to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," by the group. 👍
LOVE ANIMALS, BUT BEST VERSION OF THAT SONG IS SANTA ESMERALDA'S 1979 COVER VERSION (PHILLIPS STUDIO ALBUM VERSION IS 16:05 LONG)
That is exactly the song I was thinking about.
That is exactly the song I was thinking about.
Another great song of theirs is, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. I'm sure that you'd love it !!! However, there's also We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (Blue Oyster Cult also does a great live version of it). They have others, but those are the top couple.
They're from Newcastle/Washington (UK).The bassist discovered Jimi Hendrix
От этой песни вспоминаю сериал "сверхъестественное", впервые её услышал там 🔥
You need to listen to “We Gotta Get Out of the Place” and “It’s My Life”! Also, two lesser known, but great songs “White Houses” and “Sky Pilot.” They were absolutely incredible, and they each went on to success in different areas of the music industry. Pure genius!
❤❤❤❤too many loves for The Animals!!!! Love love love!!
I was 18 in 1966 and was new at playing a guitar . Of course like most amateur guitar players i had to learn House of the rising sun .
It was a great song then and still is today
It's an old folk song, originally told from a woman's point of view. The House of the Rising Sun was a brothel. She ended up working there because her father didn't provide for the family, but she now regrets it and warns the listener not to follow in her footsteps.
How about that organ solo? He was playing a Vox Continental (not a Hammond organ as some people think).
Other songs by The Animals:
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
We Gotta Get Out of This Place
See See Rider
Sky Pilot
Love your reactions!
The decade of the '60's produced a myriad of music that told stories and were thought provoking.
Kerry you are taking this old man back in time...I was a kid in Southern Calif back then where that was all going down...desert town ...first song my Bro taught me on the guitar...motorcycles...tough guys...hard times...thank you....
It's so cool that you reacted that way 😂❤ Cool tunes!
The. Animals are great they did the video in one take
One of the greatest songs of all time!!! House of the Rising Sun. Made Number #1 on both US and British Charts.
Kerry, one of the best songs ever
Great song a little before my time in the 70s, but we all knew it.
Eric Burdon looks so young for that voice !! The way he looks right into the camera when he's singing, gives me the chills, very Erie, in a good way 😂❤
This is one of many true American classics. Real talent. No autotuning.
And as a side note. Great reaction video. You look marvelous!
Pardon? The song might be American in origin, but the group are British!
@peterfhere9461 Nobody is really sure of the origins of this song- its believed to originate as a folk song from either the US or UK
thanks for the video. Love the animals.
Hi Kerry ! I’m glad you are trying music reactions.
Great reaction. You would probably also like their song “Bring it on Home”. It’s not one of their big hits but it’s timeless. It’s about a guy that didn’t realize what he lost until his partner left him. The video appears to be filmed on a beach in SoCal back in the days of The Beach Boys.
listen to "Don't Bring Me Down" by the Animals. It's my favorite song by them. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
I was stationed in Vietnam when this song came out...every night between the sound of the explosions...fireguns Armed Forces Radio use to play this song...I could never forget the words of our Priest Lt. Adams saying to all of us; Pray to Lord Pray to Lord...tought memories. BTW; Kerry if you would ever know what this song meant....😁🤣Yeah...Me Lov Yu Long Time baby....
Kerry, You are SO beautiful! Best thing ever to come over from Russia!!!
LOVE IT!
Thank you for your reflections upon this Ma'am.
I like that you don't stop the video to talk, keep it going, brilliant. 👌
Remember listening to this on a TRANSISTOR radio, 1964. broadcast by pirate radio ship off the East coast of Britain. Radio London or Radio Caroline.
The legendary "The House of the Rising Sun" was included by Rolling Stone magazine among the greatest songs of all time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced that this 1964 hit by the British group The Animals is one of several pieces of music that shaped rock and roll as a style. Good wine does not age over the years: already in 1999, which is close to us, the song was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame award.
One of the all time great performances of any era. The British invasion bands all seemed to love American blues and folk music. This version of the song, which is a traditional folk song, was recorded in the 1930s. Hard to believe singer Eric Burdon was in his early twenties when he sang this. Alan Price used the Vox Continental in most of the Animals hits. The song intensifies towards it's grim end but is belied by the guitarist sheepish grin. He had bumped the neck of his guitar on the prop pillar and they did a second take from that point. You can see him raise his guitar extra high as he passes by the pillar on the second take.
Am C D F Am C Em Em Am C D F Am Em Am Em. It’s one of the first songs many young guitar players learn.
Sometime in 1968 I was stationed in Okinawa flying in B-52's to drop bombs in Vietnam. Okinawa had a midnight curfew for bars and night clubs. A lot of the clubs closed their front doors at midnight and then opened their back doors for patrons. One night at one of these after hours clubs, a GI was playing a keyboard and sang this song. He did a masterful performance and brought the house down. Every time I hear this song I remember that one night.
I remember when this came out. LOL Played on the radio a lot.
Eu gosto desta música, sou do Brasil.
A fantastic and best known cover of a great Blues song. I love this version but my favorite is Nina Simone. Great reaction Kerry.
I was working at a garage in the late 60's, and one morning, a Porsche 911 was towed in with a blown clutch.
The driver was Alan Price, the keyboard player !
The organ Alan Price was playing was a Vox Continental. I looked it up and a dealer sold one recently dating from 1966 for £2748 .
A true classic
The arrangement of this song has very rythem and blues, soulful, gospel undertones. There are moments where you feel like you're in a black church or at a funeral in New Orleans.
Great band! Eric Burdon great lead singer. Was good friends with Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon. The Beatles mention him in I Am the Walrus. He is the eggman. Burdon was also in the band War.
Great choice. Wonderful oldie but goodie!!!
I think v few songs are un-improvable. This is one of them. Had i been in a support band next on stage after they played that, I'd have have snuck out the back. Epic. Thanks for the reaction.
Great sound and such simple lyrics but it is powerful.
Kerry, are you a big dancer? Back in the '80's a group named Santa Esmeralda did long disco cover versions on The Animals songs "House Of The Rising Sun"
and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Each song is about 15 minutes long and have Spanish influences. Both are great tunes. Enjoy!
Eric Burdon also did Vocals on the song "Spill the Wine" by the Group War.
How can anyone not like this song?
Eric Burdon didn`t like the song for a while because Alan Price was getting all the royalties. lol
I met Eric Burdon and got him to sign an album for me. He is a true musician and a caring person. He has written two books, and tells a funny story about being the egg man in John Lennon's song "I am the Walrus".
Great! Brits singing about New Orleans and the reaction by a beautiful Russian girl. New Orleans where Dixie was born--see the Dix Note from the Bank of New Orleans.
Eric Burdon`s Voice is Legendary. The Tall Red Haired Bass Guitarist is Chaz Chandler, He is the man who Discovered Legendary Guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
They also had a hit song used on the tv series tour of duty
THIS IS MOST PROBABLY THE MOST DIFFICULT SONG TO COVER ~ FANTASTIC ICONIC 60'ties SONG !! THANKS KERRY, YOU CERTAINLY HAVE EXCELLENT TASTE - BOER BEN
Excellent , A Classic.
" We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" is great, too.
Kerry, your English is great!
I Gotta Get Out of This Place, by the Animals, you will love as much as we will love, you loving it!!
Spent a lot of time in house of rising sun in Bangkok 1960 s
Love that one.
From 1964. I still go to see Eric whenever he's in the area. Check out their hit "We Gotta Get Outta This Place"
Your funny too Kerry 👀 luv you 👏👏👏
Bravo❤❤
This was the number 2 most requested song on Armed Forces Radio Vietnam , I got to where i hated it, But the last 4 years i have gotten back into the 60's music , Nice Pod Cast Hand Salute from an Old Nam Veteran
Another great ballad from the 60s.
One of the first songs every garage band of the late '60's learned
As you like the blues, there is another group you should try that I haven't seen on these channels. It is the Paul Butterfield Blues Band doing Chicago blues. "Born in Chicago", "I got my Mojo Working", "Get Out of my Life Woman", "Mary Mary", etc.
you make me Smile 😁😁😊😊❤❤
Oh, yes she does!
They had several good hits. Try "I'm Crying". It's my favorite song by them.
My favorite song of all time and then I found out it was number 1 on the day I was born.
Fun Fact, the bassist is who discovered Jimi Hendrix
Eric Burdon y the Animals, genios. Es un placer Krry que te guste esta música.
Their rendition of Bring It On Home To Me is top of the mark
I have been to that house in N.O. there were a lot of girls like you there!!!!!!💕💕💕💕💕💕
Being a teenager back then i remember all these great bands.
Saludos desde Perú💕😊
