01:21 🍞 Avoid "naked" carbs, like toast with jam or fruit juice, as they cause significant blood sugar spikes.
02:29 🥑 Cover carbs with fat, protein, or fiber (e.g., Greek yogurt on cake) to slow down glucose absorption and reduce spikes.
04:06 🍳 Opt for a savory breakfast (e.g., omelet instead of pancakes) to avoid blood sugar spikes; fruits should be consumed whole.
06:10 🚫 Avoid coffee on an empty stomach to prevent blood sugar spikes, as caffeine can impact adrenaline production.
06:53 🍽 Sequence food consumption: Veggies first, proteins/fats second, and starches/sugars last to potentially reduce spikes by 20-30%.
09:08 🍴 Eating slower and taking breaks between courses can reduce blood sugar spikes, especially in carb-heavy meals.
11:27 🍰 Consume sweet foods as dessert after a balanced meal with fiber, protein, and healthy fats to moderate blood sugar spikes.
13:30 🥄 Drink vinegar before meals (or include in salad dressing) to potentially reduce glucose spikes by about 10-15%.
14:54 🍔 Stop obsessing over calorie counting; focus on food quality and impact on blood sugar levels instead.
16:05 🚶 Move after eating to help muscles absorb glucose; for insulin-dependent diabetics, consider pre-bolusing (injecting insulin before meals) based on CGM trends.

I found Jesse’s hacks including the injecting insulin about 10 minutes prior to meal the best thing that has worked for me. I have also gone a little further by including cruciferous vegetables (eg broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) with every meal.. if I’m making stews, casseroles or curries I cut the veggies in big chunks and place them in the pot for the last 10mins cooking time so that it steams and easily pick out when serving. Eating extra vegetables has really been a game changer for my diabetes and jesse’s hack helped even more..

You need only 1 hack = zero carbs in your diet. Go for keto or carnivore diet and forget about your diabeties forever. I almost do not eat any fruits/vegetables, I eat meat, fish, eggs, butter and my blood sugar is the same before and after meals nice and stable. My body weight is perfect.

Injecting insulin 10 or even 15 minutes before eating is not a hack. It's something that has been recommended to Type 2s for years. But one caveat: If you are eating out, make sure you don't inject your meal bolus before the server takes your order AND you ask your server how the kitchen is doing as related to time. If he or she says your order is going to take a while(explain to them why you are asking), then wait until you actually get your food to inject. I had a difficult time once when a favorite restaurant that normally served dinner about 20 minutes after ordering, didn't serve my dinner for almost 40 minutes after I took my dinner shot. I was going low, fast.

Tom, thank you so much for all your information. My first husband was diabetic, so I am familiar with it, and at the age of 45, I developed severe reactive hypoglycemia. So need to follow the same diet, watch my blood sugars, etc. Medicare won’t pay for a CGM for me, but your vid’s convinced me that it would be money well spent to pay for one on my own instead of continuing to live in fear of another seizure from low blood sugar. I found Jesse a few months ago, also, and I don’t follow all her hacks, but through trial and error have figured which ones work the best for me. Between that, and the information you have, I have been able to slowly get back out into the real world again. Thank you so much for all your hard work !

An excellent exercise recommendation to do after a meal is squeezing your glutes. You can do this exercise while sitting or lying down. Squeeze your glutes 20-30 times, then hold for a few seconds. You can also engage your hamstrings while doing this exercise. Repeat this process for ten sets. The glutes are the largest muscles in your body, which means they have the potential to absorb and utilize the carbs (glucose) in your bloodstream.

These sorts of ACME general guidelines are just concepts for people who don't actually have Diabetes at all, are very new to being diagnosed with it, or are Type 2....which to be honest isn't even close to the same illness. Type 1 is deadly serious, and is based on having a non functional pancreas. IE: a vital organ that doesn't work. Made up for by taking synthetic insulin, which has quite it's own number of issues. But it's that or death, and fast....so you take it. That said, it's incredibly complex to manage as time marches on. The things you mention, most Type 1 people have always done. Because if they didn't, they'd probably be dead or missing limbs years back by now. That said, I usually find the people with so much advice to give are usually the people least qualified to say anything about it at all. Minus guys like Tom on this channel, who is truly Type 1, and talks about all the realities of it. He gives really good advice and things to try. As others have said, nobody is exactly the same. So some things work for some of us and not others. I love Tom's channel. Thanks for doing it Tom! I've been asked for years to do something similar or teach newbies at a hospital how to cope, manage, deal with the emotional and mental challenges of it all, etc. Because I've worked very hard and figured a lot of things out over decades. But alas, I'm not quite as courageous in that department as Tom to be in the limelight with it.

Not to mention that it can be difficult to know the carbs in advance, like at a restaurant. You also need to be really careful not to double down - it has happened to me quite a few times, when I've pre-bolus'd, and then our toddler has thrown a pre-dinner tantrum, and I've then gone on to take insulin again when sitting down out of habit.
Then I have to go raid the cupboard with the sweets...

  • @msarchieve1749
    @msarchieve1749 9 місяців тому +1

I am a type 2 diabetic. I use a glucometer. I think the best way for a diabetic to eat is to eat like a diabetic.
A lot of diabetics are scared of carbs, because they have not been educated on how to eat like a diabetic or because they don't want to be educated.
A diabetic is taught how to count servings of carbs.
1 serving of carbs is 15g of carbs except for non strarchy veggie, then the serving is 5g of carbs.
To find out how many servings of carbs you had, you divide the carbs by the serving of carbs.
Example: Bananas with 60g of carbs. 60/15= 4. That would be 4 servings of carbs.
If a carb number is close to 15g of carbs per serving, then it's still 1 serving of carbs. Example: Milk (12g of carbs).
A diabetic is taught to eat 15g of carbs/1 serving of carbs per snack. 45g of carbs per meal (3 servings of carbs).
It's very important that a diabetic pays close attention to the serving size, the carbs per serving and their portion control as in how much of that serving they are going to have. They need to know the glycemic index of food too.
Example: A serving of milk is 8oz. With 12g of carbs.
If you are a milk drinker make sure you have 8oz cups or glasses, because anything larger than 8oz will add up the carbs, etc.
The reason why I said to know the glycemic index because it will let you know where the food falls on the glycemic index range.
    Low: 55 or less
    Medium: 56 to 69
    High: 70 and up
Another reason to know glycemic index because you will need it to find the glycemic load of your food
Glycemic Index remains the same, whereas Glycemic Load varies depending on carbs per serving and how much of the serving you eat known as portion control. It gives you a better picture on how fast your blood sugar rises.
    Glycemic Load:.
Formula: Glycemic index x carbs per serving/100. Round to whole number.
    Low: 10 or less
    Medium: 11 to 19
    High: 20 and up.
Example: Skim milk. Serving size: 8oz. Glycemic index:32, Carbs per seving 12g of carbs. If a person had 1 serving.
    32 (GI) x 12g of carbs/100= 4
4 is a low glycemic load so it willl not raise blood sugar much.
Not only should a diabetic know their before snack or meal blood sugar number, they need to know the time they have taken the first bite of carb.
    It's not hard managing diabetes.

A good tip to calculate pre-bolus timing, that works very well for me, is to divide my current BG by 10 and wait that many minutes before I start eating. For example, if I'm at 130, I inject the amount of insulin that I need for that extra 30, and also for the the meal I'm about to eat. And then I wait for 13 minutes.
The reason I love this tip is that it's so easy to follow. Anyone can do divisions by 10 hehe.

    Hurray you’re back 😁
A lot of these I’ve been doing through trial and error from my own “errors”. I ditched cereal for breakfast, for a while I’ve been having kefir, raspberries and blueberries. I then wait 1/2 hour and have a slice of whole grain toast.
I always eat some greens with my lunch niece I typically have Cous Cous with mackerel or any oily fish, with spinach and red onion and other bits. We always have salad with our evening meal, tonight we’re having pork, salad, and baby potatoes, I’ll apply the order you suggested to eat that meal. I’m not a sweet tooth but I’ve found the best ice cream hitch hardly spikes me (I know you love ice cream 😂), it’s Carte Dore, Light. It’s 11g carbs per 100ml, low sugar too.
I’ve started bolusing a lot earlier too. These past 3 weeks on my Libre 2 target has not dropped blow 90%, I’ve even achieved 100% for a few days which has blown me away 👍🏼👌🏼👌🏼
    Today I’m at 99%.
Ive also really lowered my carb intake so I don’t need as much insulin now. It’s working so far and I enjoy the food I eat.

I have been having problems with my glucose levels. It is affecting my eyes. Retinopathy, even though I still only need glasses for driving. So I joined a gym and changed my diet. The difference is huge. I used to have a pre-breakfast reading of 10-20mlo. Now it is 5-7. I eat chicken, ham, cheese or eggs for breakfast. Salad with olive oil for lunch. Dinner is curry on a bed of beansprouts, stir-fry, or meat and veg. I swim 30 lengths 4-5 times a week or go for a 3 mile walk after meals.
If I want a chocolate kick I put a spoon full of coco powder in Greek yogurt . Sometime on top of sugar free jelly.
Before anyone complains about Coco powder. This is a teaspoon.
    Protein (g) 0.98
    Total lipid (fat) (g) 0.71
    Carbohydrate, by difference (g) 2.96
    Energy (kcal) 11.99
    Sugars, total (g) 0.1
I have also lost 8lb in 3 week. I can go 7 hours without peeing at night now. LOL I would also add drinking plenty of water to these tips.

Hi there thanks so much for the video. quick question. I don't do breakfast. I drink two cups of TEA (not coffee) with soya milk on empty stomach in the morning when I get up. And eat one small bite of cheese BIRE. And snack on BIRE once more before first meal at 1-2pm lunch time. So my question doesTEA has the same effect like coffee ie: spiking glucose level or TEA does not spike gulucose level and is ok to do first thing in the morning.? Gratittude

I was diagnosed with 'LADA' type 1 a couple of years ago. I got very ill, but have been doing well getting used to insulin. I'm 40. I want to learn more about living well with type 1. I hear folks talk about how a low carb diet is helpful, but I'm confused and would like to run something by everyone here. Before the hospital told me to start on insulin, I was exhausted all the time, losing weight rapidly, and feeling like crap, because the carbs in my diet / the glucose in my blood weren't being converted into energy for my cells. At least, that's how I understand it. So, how would a low carb diet be different? Granted, if I ate very little carbs I wouldnever be hyperglycemic, but wouldn't I also be lacking in the energy we get from carbs? So it seems like it is better to eat a moderate amount of carbs and use insulin to try to imitate a working pancreas. Am I thinking about that in the right way? I would love to get some perspectives from other diabetics as I feel quite alone with this condition

I have to disagree on the vinegar at this point in time. Being a research scientist I have read many papers on this and some studies say it works, some studies say it doesn't work and some studies are inconclusive. So do it if you wish, but the science does not support it at this time.
There is a theory that the people who do gain a small benefit from drinking vinegar feel that it helps. In other words it's a placebo but there is nothing wrong with a placebo because of placebo, if you believe it works, will lower your stress level. This lowers cortisol which can affect the uptake of insulin. Stress can help produce sugar spikes. This is not proven by studies yet as it's just a theory. But more and more stress seems to be able to aggravate more and more medical conditions.
And let me emphasize that there is nothing wrong with the placebo effect. If it works, great.

Pre-bolusing is the best. I tipically pre-bolus between 20 to 30 minutes before the meal, but this obviously depends on the macros of the meal and my prior glucose level. If done right I can completely avoid the spike. However big meals are dangerous: when the meal is bigger than usual I have to reduce the time because my digestion slows significantly and it is easy to end with a hypo followed by a delayed spike.
