A Garden Risk I'm Glad I Took

  • When I finally decided to relocate the four boxwood balls that punctuated the boxwood hedge in the potager, I just wanted to get her done! Yes, it was a gardening risk worth taking, but I am thrilled with the results and so glad I decided to do it. We even got a good solid rain last night to affirm my decision LOL! I can’t wait to show you the entire kitchen garden when it is staged, organized, and pruned just the way I like it! I

In California we are having 100-108 degree days. So hard to keep things alive. I'd like eventually to have my shrubs to fill out and fill the yard in a woodland type garden. I've recently planted four 15 ft trees. Not much I can do except water early in the morning to keep things alive. Next Fall it will be more fun! Your garden is inspirational.

I love the look! Who knew we could be so attached to our gardens that significant changes to them could cause such anxiety and second guessing our decisions. I over think cutting flowers to bring inside as opposed to leaving their beauty outside...lol.

Thank you so much Linda for sharing in such detail how you handled removing your boxwood balls and where and how you transplanted them. As a boxwood newbie I appreciate the care with which you honor these plants. I’ve planted five of them into planters this year and so far they are getting much attention. I even had my ninety-two year mother do the prune them into topiary balls which she found very satisfying. I have yet to plant some in ground but that is coming.

Linda, I love being on your garden journey with you. I too, thought the potted figs were a strange choice until you explained that you are protecting the fragile bare branches. Moving the figs periodically will allow for new growth without it looking so bare ( it looks like a coral reef- very cool). I love when you did the QVC plug and said" blah blah blah". You are a hard worker and a design pro. I LOVE my Barnel shears, BTW. They are a life saver when pruning my out of control ( and very out of reach) Wisteria. Keep up the great content!

As pretty as the fig pots look in the entry to the potager, I really like the openness of the woody ends of the boxwoods. I have about 20 boxwood lining my herb and vegetable gardens and they do give such wonderful definition in a manicured garden. Also, when you clean up the veggie areas, everything will be beautiful and they will be seen visually without the fig pots blocking that visual. Even after gardening for 40 plus years I still learn from you. Love your passion for gardening and "placemaking".
