I use the splitter I have one with 4 valves. My front yard does not have a tap so I ran a hose (rubber) all around the base of the house to the front, then connected my hose to it. My second one is for the back yard. My third I cut off a 3 ft. Length of an old hose and connected it to the valve. When I need a bucket of water I do not have to turn on the length of a hose just filling using this small hose.I have 4 water barrels around the corners of my house, I attached septic tank hoses to the overflow of each of them and tuck them away so they are out of sight. When we get a deluge of rain I simple pull out they hoses onto the grass, tree area or plant bed and the water is redirected away from the house to the yard. I love the small sprinkler for the very reason you mentioned.
Yes! To the hydration message!! Heat stress is a very real threat in our Zone 7 summers. If I am planning a long, possibly hot, morning in the garden I include water in my trug/basket and set a frozen Powerade out on the picnic table to thaw while I work. Both are indispensable in the heat. No one wants a heat emergency.
So hard to go from Mon to Thurs ( I am M-Th-Sat) without watering when it's 90+. I save sink and shower water ( waiting for water to heat up!). Saves my pots on non-watering days.
Suggestion for one more: rain barrels. Lets plants have lovely rain water, no need to haul out and fight the kinks in the hose, saves on water bills, can attach soaker hoses to it, doesn’t waste roof runoff water.
I've been wanting to do the rain barrels but I hear these rain barrels will fill really fast with a hard rain? So I'm afraid that It might overflow and cause damage so I never actually pursued it anymore. Where does the water divert after it fills up your rain barrel?
@@randyman8984 same place as it goes now from your downspout. A rain barrel is like sticking a glass under the faucet, you just divert the water flow to fill up the “glass” to use later. Any overflow will continue its original journey. They all come with an overflow hose that directs it to the ground, but you can get a longer hose to extend it wherever you need. One option is to get another barrel and connect them to save more water. Another fun solution is to create a rain garden. That’s basically a section of your garden dug down to temporarily hold the overflow and filled with plants that are okay sitting in water for a bit until the soil can absorb the water. Size depends on absorption rate. If the rain barrel isn’t connected to a downspout it will take quite a while to fill up anyway, even with a downpour. Go for it!
@@randyman8984 I use a diverter kit that has a flap that closes when the barrel is full and redirects the water down the downspout. This one is from Amazon.💧UNIVERSAL FIT: Turn nearly any plastic container into a rain collection barrel that fills & overflows back to the downspout!
Linda, I think this video wins the prize for the greatest number of great tips for gardeners and for people who don't think of themselves as gardeners but who work outside in their yard! Thank you! I am going to go find the plumbers tape... it's around here somewhere...❤❤❤
Best purchase this year was an expandable hose! I bought a 50' for my patio and loved it so much I got a 100' for my side yard. Very light weight, 4 layers strong, never kinks with brass fittings including a turn off (just like your hose) at the end so I can shut it off a the end to change from wand to sprinkler without going to the spigot! Can't live without quick connects and agree about brass over plastic 💚
I LOVE quick connects. I have issues with my hands and can’t hold a trigger very long or at all some days. I found a sprayer that has a fireman’s style nozzle. You just pull the lever back and it stays back on its own till you want to shut it off. Perfect for weak or painful hands. Very similar to the one you showed but the lever is very big so easy to move if moving small levers with your thumb is hard, since you can use your whole hand.
Brilliant idea about the watering on alternate days. Lucky you live in a garden loving community. So many people in my neighbourhood opt for cement front and back gardens. I envy the american large gardens which you all seem to have. I'm lucky to have a little more space than some here in the uk. Thanks for sharing💞
I'm not really much of a live chat person myself. However it does seem most people like them. I do like the suggestion viewers have made about the rain barrels because even when rain gutters are functioning properly it's a good idea to keep water off and far away from your foundation.
I have the Dramm hose nozzle and love it but, it does not have a soaker setting. I like the soaker setting for deep saturation. Love the thumb control!
I really recommend the hoselink hose system. I was dealing with tangled hoses for years and finally completely lost my patience with it and ordered it. It doesn’t kink, it automatically reels back in, and now they even have a black case that would blend in with your fence. I don’t even care about the quick connect features, but they have that too.
Locally there have been some issues with shipments of seasonal merchandise, so selection of hoses has been limited not only in big-box stores, but garden centers and nurseries as well. I decided to put off buying anything this year, so went shopping my garage to see what hoses might be hidden away under something else. I found a 25' black Craftsman hose, and while it's not perfect (just as Linda says), it's working OK. A landscape designer friend told me a 3/4" hose is less likely to kink, but that diameter seems less common than 5/8". The Craftsman hose is 3/4", so there may be something to his theory.
YES to live chats! YES to plumber's tape. I finally got rid of my long (100'), heavy hose this spring even tho there was nothing wrong with it and bought a metal flex one from QVC (!!) and it's the best thing I did. I got a 75'. It may be sold out. I kept tripping over it and it always got caught around heavy planters. I am a container gardener who rents with one spigot. The 75 footer reaches my patio and 3 walkways easily. It does not kink and it's lightweight. So far so good. Good advice about how long of a hose you really need. I donated my old hose to a local church that was in need.
@@pamelacallaway3922 Thank you - they did appreciate it, and it didn't go into a landfill. I gave them sprayers as well. Thank you for your kind words.
Hi from sunny Southern California🙋🏼♀️ I have been watching your gardening program for some while. I enjoy all your hints and tips. My tip for drinking more water while I’m outside gardening is to use a beautiful cup that I enjoy drinking out of. One of mine is a flowery thermos and I have a one with a straw that has flamingos 🦩 Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay hydrated 💦
I highly recommend the Zero-G hoses I got from Lowe’s a couple years ago. They are not inexpensive but are light weight, very flexible and very durable.
Thank you and Robin Martin for your recommendation. I've been very curious about stainless steel hoses. So far this summer, in NE Ohio we've generally had fairly regular rainfall, so haven't had to use a hose or sprinklers much. So I may put off buying a hose this year, but will definitely consider an s/s hose based on your recommendations!
I have one of these for my front watering. It is a 25 ft I think. I love it. I had gotten the 75 ft for my back and hated it. I can’t really describe the issue but it was like it had a blockage in it. Water seeped through it. I think that one was just a dud, because I love the other one. And it is less obtrusive to the view in front of the house.
The splitter can also be used at the end of a hose. I've run one hose to the rear of our property, and then attached a splitter, with one hose and sprinkler running to the left, and another hose and sprinkler running to the right. Also works with soaker hoses. Can cover quite a long expanse this way.
In answer to your question about a good hose. I swear by the rubber Sears Craftsman hoses. I have been using the same four hoses for the last 35 years. Not the same brand of hose but the very same hoses. I have 3 outdoor faucets and I bought one for each plus a shorter one for close work. They have lasted all these years and in zone 5 with temps below -20-30 and I never store them inside. They are not light weight but are totally light enough for me to still handle at 72 years old. They are not cheap but as a one time purchase in 35 years totally worth every penny. Love your show.
Totally agree about slide water wands. I found a hose on QVC that is lightweight and absolutely kink-free. Stainless steel. Small so not the best for watering out over our acre but perfect for containers and beds close to house.
Great tips - especially just buying the length hose you need. Guilty! 😂 Watering here in the pnw has certainly been a challenge this year. I’m a fairly new gardener in a new climate renovating an old yard. I thought I had watering figured out, then we got a heat wave for the history books. The challenges keep it interesting!
That hydration tip is the most important!! I ran into trouble after a bike ride once and ended up in the ER getting pumped full of liquid and electrolytes. Lesson learned. It's a case of an ounce of prevention etc.
Thanks for the tip on using the lawn sprinkling system. I will begin using the smaller sprinkler because I have spots that are missed by the system. Plumber tape really works. Good video. Thanks.
Great tips. I would also add using a long handle. I find it easier to water the ground so the foliage is not getting too much water. It’s also much easier to water hanging pots.
A couple of random thoughts.... I like the thumb-control nozzle, learned about them here. One great advantage is that the amount of flow can be adjusted by how far back you turn the control. I often will open the spigot all the way or close to it, but then dial back on the nozzle. But if I need to give something a good blast (like a hard surface), I don't have to go back and adjust the spigot, I can just open up the nozzle all the way. I have probably half a dozen short hoses, 10-15' long. I can combine them to create almost any length I need. And will work even better now that I know about plumber's tape! Currently, I have 25' hose at front and back spigot, and then use one or two lengths of smaller hose attached to them if I need to reach an area further away. For many tasks, the 25' hose is sufficient.
I was taught to water in the evening because of less evaporation but now I prefer to water in the very early morning, no more slugs! I also like to deep water after a light rain so the soil is already moist.
Thank you for these wonderful tips! I'm a little behind on your videos but I really enjoy your content! I'm in Oklahoma City too so you are a Godsend for my newly found love of gardening! Now, if you could give me some tips for getting rid of these mosquitoes I'd be set! Mosquito Militia just isn't working for us. 😬
So right about wrestling with hoses & splitter is very helpful. Also tape. Designated hoses to their area. In this heat I do the soak every other day. I think the plants appreciate it too. Is that a big moon on your shirt? Great visit. Thank you dear. We love you.
Very informative and I agree about splitters being so helpful. I hate leaky connections and will try plumber's tape. Lastly, great reminder to hydrate! I sometimes wait too long and then get so depleted. Love your videos ❣️
Here in NH we have had a very wet summer. Has been raining every day if only for 10 minutes twice a day. But for those dry summers a hose link is a must....
Yes, quick connects, my favorite are Gilmore’s and I find that I need at least twice as many male connects as females and you can buy separately or as a pair and they are brass and last longer. Between quick connects, the hose end shut offs for connecting/disconnecting, and the finger push wands each saves hand fatigue and time for me! I have a “heavy” hose of a length for each section of my yard that I hand water and use one “light” hose. I wind the heavies in place at the yard section on the ground in as inconspicuous as possible but anally so. My diva (light) hose always gets carefully put away in a Linda Vater basket. ❤️😁. I find that if I put the wand into the basket first and starting at that end I can unwind the hose as I’m hand over hand placing it into your designed basket, which I love. I have a basket at the front of my house and one at the back.
Zero G hoses are lightweight and kinks less than regular hoses, they hold up well mine are several years old and are used year round in my north Florida garden.
I almost always water in the morning. However, one tip I would suggest would be that if you are transplanting plant in the evening( it’s best to transplant in either the morning, evening, or on a heavy overcast day) and wandering if you should wait till the morning to water, don’t. Transplants need water right away! After that, however, you can revert back to morning watering.
I really like my Rachio irrigation system controller. It’s pretty intelligent. I’ve had it a few years and I can only think of 1 time it shouldn’t have watered but did.
I normally try to water in the morning. I did go into the garden shed and set out my round sprinkler in specific areas. I am going to get me some quick connects. I also use Soil Moist.
Love the new addition to your intro! I water in the morning. Some of my pots need watered twice a day due to the heat here in Texas. Hand watering is so relaxing. I have a great hose that doesn't kink hardly at all. I don't remember the brand but I got it from Lowe's. I will try to find it and let you know.
I'm buying a Hoselink System. Laura on Garden Answer has them and they look like they are perfect for people with either issues like kinking or who can't drag a hose around due to physical limitations.
Game changer for me was installing Hoselinks 80ft retractable hoses! No heavy bulky hoses to wrestle with anymore. My house/garden is in the middle of woods. Mostly shade & water in evenings after working all day. Wish I had irrigation
Good tips. I drink 64 oz. Of water a day! Heart failure pushed me into that much water but now it is normal for me. I other thing i would recommend is a long watering wand. A long one eliminates bending over to water and you can target the roots easier then just over watering. And you don't have to bend over. Going to Lowes this afternoon, hoping to find sone quick connects. I share the watering wand between front and back. A pain to take off. No fashion talk?!. Sob sob. I don't care if not anything special i enjoy your outfit choices.
The holy grail hose for me is the Bionic steel hose. Super light weight, does not get filthy, never ever ever kinks, and is a breeze to put away - even if its a super long hose
I water in the evenings but will use the watering can and water under the plant, it saves a lot of water than using a hose, I don’t have a fungal problem thankfully. With the watering can you can utilise the rain water collected in a water barrel too. I’ve brought in more plants that enjoy drier conditions and use pea shingle to keep in the moisture where needed. Watering balls or upcycled bottles that slow drain are good for pots and containers, especially if you are away for a few days
A live Q&A would be awesome! I also think a pre-recorded Q&A would be equally awesome! If you have everyone submit questions a week or two in advance on a particular video you could use those. I would imagine many people will have some of the same questions, so you could avoid multiples that way. I think either would be equally great!
Live Chats please yayyyyy💐 I have a Gilmore hose I find if I unwind it and let the sun warm it before I turn the water on it helps not kink as much. THEY CLAIMED IT IS KINKLESS ..you are right they are not out there😒 and it had an expandable one that burst in the middle so I am going to invest in some decorative hose guides around my garden Blessings your way💐
Hi Linda, I have found wonderful hoses that are really lightweight & never kink, their metal & come in different lengths, I believe I got them from HSN ,their great have had no problems whatsoever!!!
That sounds like a wonderful thing to have the live chat!!! OMgosh.. I love those sunglasses! So cute!! Great watering video. I learned a lot and am thinking of changing things out as budget allows. love, hugs, prayers.
Hey Linda! Great video and tips as always 😊 I understand Hoselink is a good brand and meets a lot of the home gardener needs as well as those in the commercial gardening industry. And yes, would love to see the live chat. How cool would that be!! Finally, I'm in Utah and we're in a critical drought. It's been tough on all of our edible and ornamental gardens 🤦♀️😔

I also use Soil Moist.
thumbs up on the LIVE Chats!! Yes!
I love this intro!! 🤣 so funny and appropriate for the season. The mosquitoes have been out of control. I’m so ready for cooler temperatures!
Always look forward your videos Linda, they make my day!!!
That is good information. I always have watered in the evening.
Yes to live chat!
Yes yes on a live chat!
I have a stainless steel hose, got off Amazon. It does not kink!! 👍
Yesssss to live chats I would love that!
👏👏👏
Love the new addition to your intro! I water in the morning. Some of my pots need watered twice a day due to the heat here in Texas. Hand watering is so relaxing. I have a great hose that doesn't kink hardly at all. I don't remember the brand but I got it from Lowe's. I will try to find it and let you know.
I love hand watering too cause I find it sooo relaxing!
I love your haircut! I too never drink enough water.
Sure live chat- great format - or just a q & a filmed live - based on previous and live questions
Splitter:brilliant
Love the live chat idea!
YES LIVE CHATS!!!!!!
I'm buying a Hoselink System. Laura on Garden Answer has them and they look like they are perfect for people with either issues like kinking or who can't drag a hose around due to physical limitations.
They are great! We bought one a couple years ago and love it!
A live chat would be fun!
I did not know about watering in the evening. Thanks!
Game changer for me was installing Hoselinks 80ft retractable hoses! No heavy bulky hoses to wrestle with anymore. My house/garden is in the middle of woods. Mostly shade & water in evenings after working all day. Wish I had irrigation
A live chat would be great!!
I would love live chats👍🏼😊
Thanks. Love the advice on the plumber’s tape.
Linda you need a Hoselink. Their expensive but worth every dime. Once you go Hoselink you’ll never go back!!
The holy grail hose for me is the Bionic steel hose. Super light weight, does not get filthy, never ever ever kinks, and is a breeze to put away - even if its a super long hose
I love my steal hose!
Thanks Linda, great tips , love the quick contact adapters .
Hoselink’s all the way for this gal with osteoarthritis in every major joint👍🏻
I’m so glad!
Do you have a water "wand" that you can recommend for difficult to reach hanging baskets, etc.? Live chats.....absolutely, yes!
Wonderful tips. Great video Linda. Thanks so much.
