This is something I hope affinity addresses in the future. The gradient tool needs an adjustable flow value.

Haha, indeed. I mean, even PowerPoint has that feature. Why it’s two tools in Affinity Designer (colour gradient and transparency) is also beyond me.

😮😮😮 I never stop learning new things with Affinity. Thanks Trent - great tip and workaround to a pet annoyance for so many of us.

Yes, I often lose time with that too. At least it's a good alternative. Thank you for having the patience to find these things out!

Great!!!! This was just the answer to no flexible gradient on a mask!!! I use quite a lot of contro point and I need to practise your tip. Thank you!!!

This is an excellent video - I actually had solved it like this months ago and forgot that I did :( - there are many magical tricks regarding affinity tools, such as auto numbered figure captions in affinity publisher that I figured out months ago. I didn't yet download your designer tips, but I request that you start and update a pdf that is entitled Affinity tricks. Perhaps just a table, that gives the tip a name, in column 1, column 2, which apps it applies to, column 3 the trick itself, and column 4 comments. Clearly what you described today is a candidate trick. An other trick could be using channels to find the best mask candidate. So many tricks from so many contributors on UA-cam, but somehow your explanations with the theory of operations makes the most sense to me. Thanks again.

Thanks, @pedropuckerstein4670! Yes, there are so many hidden features and tricks. At some point I may compile another PDF.

I made a video a few weeks ago about merging photos. Let me know if that answers your question:

@@TechnicallyTrent Thank you Trent so very much. That tip of staying away from edges while dragging the gradient solved the issues I was facing regarding this.

I appreciate your finding work arounds to the minor insufficiencies in the software and sharing with us. Looking forward to Affinity (Canva) including features that further close the gap with Adobe, i.e. image trace, puppet warp, blend tool. Have you found any work arounds to these?

      Hi @octonolite_0, thanks for watching!
Currently, I have not found workarounds for those missing features in Affinity. However, there are some free open-source programs that support those features, so I may do a video on that. Stay tuned!

I actually discovered this very same issue and solution this weekend while creating a custom brush.
Speaking of custom brushes, I've got an interesting puzzle for you. The current version of Affinity Photo does not have a Color Jitter in the custom brushes menu. It has a Hue Jitter, which is all well and good, but that's not fine enough control for my needs. I want to create a brush that cycles through a specific gradient based on the direction of the brush strokes. In GIMP creating such a brush was simple. But without a Color Jitter option in Affinity, I had to create a large number of brush textures, each representing a specific RGB value and have the brush interpolate between them. If there's a simpler way to do this, I'd love to know.

      Hi @scottybreuer, thanks for watching!
Hmmm, I'm not sure how to use a gradient for the brush output. Maybe there is some way you can use a gradient map adjustment on the layer with your brush strokes? As for direction of the brush stroke, there is a "Direction" setting in the dropdown on the brush's Dynamics tab, but I don't quite recall how it works.
Just some ideas...let me know if you get it working :)

Hello, please teach me how to make a semitone for printing in DTF. I can't get the result I'm looking for and need so that the garments are less ink and softer to the touch. Thank you very much!!!

@@TechnicallyTrent Thank you so much. It's a serious problem for my entrepreneurship, because I can't solve it in a good way. I only do 2 steps. 1 I use the "semitone tool" in color and remove the black, by selecting it and deleting it. I have tried to occupy "black as a selection" and occupy it as a mask, but I can't do anything productive with it.

Great tutorial. I have a tough ask, that I presented to Affinity some years ago, but they didn't act on it. I work with video, but love the control I have with Affinity. If I want to make short GIF like sequences in PNG format, for each PNG frame in Affinity I have to press export, accept, change the number of the frame so that it runs as a sequence when imported to a video timeline, and then export. Is there a way of setting up a short key that would at least cut this down to one or two steps? I believe the advantages of Affinity over video software would be speed and incredible control over every aspect of the graphic being created. Thanks :-)

Hi @dermotarriganproductionsch3857, thanks for the message!
I don't have experience creating animated GIFs in Affinity, but I'll add that to my topic list. I would love it if Affinity support more animation features. Macros are something else I hope to cover soon, too.

Thanks, Trent :) it would be easier if the gradient mask didn't disappear ;), isn't it a bug? Anyway, your solution gives the similar result, so it works, thank you :)
Another question concerns the mockups. Do you create them or use the mockups made for Adobe? V1 had problems with some 3d effects (like raised corner of a piece of paper). I tried it in v2 recently, hoping that with Warp tool it will work better, but the mockup didn't even show layers correctly. I thought about a mockup for some kind of stationary, where you have just one layer to put your project and it shows the result on a book, newspaper or 3d leaflet. In Photopea (free, online) such mockups made in Indesign work (there're more freebies for Adobie than for Affinity). I'd love to have them in Affinity, is it possible?

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  26 днів тому +2

Hi Joan! I'm not sure if the gradient thing is technically a bug. I think it's just the way Affinity designed raster/pixel layers. When you put a gradient into a pixel layer, Affinity converts it to pixel values when you are done and it doesn't keep the concept of a "gradient".
I have used some mockups for Adobe with Affinity in the past. Like you say, it is a hit-or-miss experience. Some things do work, but other features are not supported. I'll try to address this topic in a future video :)
