As someone that lives in Hawaii, I never clicked on a video faster than I did here. That crisp from the nori and everything. Hoo, you did em good Hiro. My personal favorite way to eat it is traditional (for Hawaii) spam, eggs, and rice. I like to cut the spam super thin, like maybe a little thicker than a potato chip, and fry it in a pan. Comes out like bacon sort of. Definitely a winner for anyone that likes spam IMO.
Hiroyuki Terada - Diaries of a Master Sushi Chef You don’t need to remove the bottom, just place some plastic wrap to cover the interior (enough to have excess coming out of the top), place the rice and spam, then you can pull it out using the plastic wrap. 😄
Yepper. This is exactly how I make mine. Of course, this is after scouring my little SoCal city for a proper mold, and then trying to "wing it" with something random I found at World Market. Then got on the ole UA-cam and sure enough: almost EVERY video of home cheffing musubi shows people doing exactly this. Works perfectly!! And imagine this, it's just the exactly perfect size lol. No need to remove the bottom at all. Just line it like you said with enough plastic wrap to hang over the edges for easy removal and BOOM. Made 7 in like 4 minutes. Super easy. I'm making them again tomorrow! I season my rice with dashi and vinegar, then dust the rice in the mold with furikake, then a little squirt of kewpie mayo and siracha sauce, followed by the teriyaki Spam. Makes it a little "gourmet" hahaha (gourmet Spam lol). But man they are freaking amazing! Hot or Cold!
Aloha Hiro-San! Awesome job on your spam musubi! If any of you do make it at home the short grain rice will be the best because of its sticky consistency. If you use long grain rice it will fall apart on you when you eat it. We have so many varieties of the musubi here in Hawaii. Besides spam you can also use teriyaki chicken, hotdogs, katsu, Kalbi. basically anything you like. As they mentioned its a great grab and go snack. Mahalo!
Do you have any method to molding the rice with out that box mold he used? A person above suggested putting plastic wrap in the spam can, then putting the rice in and use the plastic to pull out back out.
Hi Tony, Yeah here in Hawaii they sell plastic molds made just for this purpose. To answer you question I guess if you are planning on making a few at a time you can use square baking trays or any trays same size. You can put the rice in one and press it down with the other. Probably would be good to line plastic wrap top and bottom when pressing so it doesn't stick to the trays or containers that you use. You can then cut it in to the size of the spam or slightly bigger. Hope this helps! Aloha!
Yes actually! I think i know exactly what I'll use now. Thanks again! Any variations to the regular spam musubi recipe you would recommend trying? i was thinking about mixing in some chili paste to add some spice. Kinda excited to try making it, I have not had musubi since the Hawaiian restaurant closed in my city like 8 years ago.
My mom always made it with either Spam or Portuguese sausage, but there are definitely plenty of ways to make musubi! We actually did it a few months ago, but we didn't have short-grain rice, so it was a little difficult and the nori didn't stick well. Man, I haven't been to Hawaii in 5+ years now. I need to get back when I can.
Hiro, good afternoon from Germany!!! What a fantastic dish!!! I would like to taste that live!!! Thank you so much for your great work! See you in the next episode! Cheers 🇺🇸🇯🇵🇩🇪!!
I got an angry reply from my comment on the last video from them telling me to shut up basically and that I don’t know what I’m talking about but this proves I’m not the only one hearing the whistley nose!!!
Good afternoon Hiro! Greetings from Boise, Idaho! I miss the spam musubi I used to get back at home. I had a Hawaiian friend get me an omusubi maker when he was visiting Hawaii and I taught my wife how to make it. Best idea ever. By the way, my wife and I love watching your videos and trying your recipes. We hope to see you in person some day. Keep the amazing videos coming!
El perro, el perro, es mi corazón, El gato, el gato, el gato no es bueno. Cilantro es cantante, Cilantro es muy famoso, Cilantro es el hombre con el queso del diablo.
What's awesome about these is how well they take other flavors. Spicy mayo is one of my favorites. Fish sauce. Something refreshing like fresh herbs...
Ok while I was watching my two year old brother was watching this with me and he said "he's cooking!" And I said "hiro is cooking" and he said "hiro is cooking". I think you have a new fan now...
in saipan we put egg in it so spam, plain omelette, rice and nori. and if we dont have the wooden box to shape the rice we use plastic wrap to shape it into the same size as the spam and cut the omelette into the same size as the spam as well then rap it up the same way with the nori except it is three layers instead of two . it is very good with sweet soy sauce.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
Mark Farrelly I barely read your comment as two roaches were battling it out in the kitchen, see those two roaches are more entertaining than your long ass comment.. burrrpp ..good day.
I don't have that wooden mold for the rice, but still i'm gonna try it somehow. I love the way you eat, with this great appetite, makes me want some too
We fry our spam in Shoyu/Sugar or Teriyaki Sauce here in Wahiawa Hawaii. We sometimes add scrambled type egg right in the middle of the rice with the spam on top.
spam fries are amazing. cut into french fry shape and bread with flour, egg, panko. great with spicy mayo and eel sauce. they're good fried naked as well
Hot tip for those of you who don’t have a wooden sushi box, line the empty Spam can with plastic wrap, fill with enough rice for one musubi and press with the lid. Pull out by pulling up on the plastic and repeat. It’s the perfect size for the spam.
I use the spam container. first put in some plastic wrap that come out over the edges (to help pull it out), add rice, a rice seasoning, add your prepared spam, press down, remove, wrap.
You can "seal" the nori by using a few grains of the cooked rice as "glue" to keep the nori from unraveling around the rice and spam. Also can add futomaki to the rice to season the rice.
What I do is to use a pair of scissors to decrease the depth of the Spam container. Just cut around the circumference and leave about 1.5" from the bottom of the container. I then pack it down with rice, turn it upside down the tap out a molded block of rice which is the same size as the spam slice.
Awesome!!! I was thinking of making this, but then i thought "What would Hiro do?" Great tutorial, can't wait to try it. Thanks for your hard work! Also, you should try it with Sriracha chili sauce for a spicy kick!
SPAM is just two kinds of pork - pork shoulder and cured ham - ground up together with some extra salt and sodium nitrite, and then canned. It's a very useful way to have meat available when there's no refrigeration. I think spam musubi is a brilliant invention :-)
Fuh... I was just thinking about L&L today and their assortment of musubi. Another thing I miss from the west coast. I have Spam, sushi rice and nori sheets in my pantry right now... Got to make some now.
Original Spam is waaay to salty tasting. The lower sodium version is just right though and I love it. I buy big cases of spam low sodium from Costco all the time. Usually cook it in scrambled eggs or just fry it up and eat it on the side with some fried eggs and rice.

Wow, just yesterday i was having some deja vu or just some day dreaming about chef making sushi out of spam, and this came out of my feed..Mind blown!
If you don’t have the mold, you can line the spam tin with some plastic wrap (for easy removal) and use that as the mold. 😉
Hiroyuki Terada - Diaries of a Master Sushi Chef You don’t need to remove the bottom, just place some plastic wrap to cover the interior (enough to have excess coming out of the top), place the rice and spam, then you can pull it out using the plastic wrap. 😄
Well, without removing the bottom I think it will be very hard.
CrazyCow Try it and see for yourself. It’s really easy! I’ve never had a problem with this method. 😊

No Hawaiian bbq meal is complete without this.
Never tried spam. This video makes me want to give it a try.
BENKYism try it. Really good. A little salty, but it's good
Spam is godly, plus really salty. I used it in mac and cheese and mexican soup and don't have to add any salt since it's really salty.
slice it thin, it tastes better.
Its not for everyone but give it a go
Hadn't tried it for 46 years. Holy shit I missed a lot of delicious meals.
Good Afternoon Hiro!!! I live in San Diego CA!!! Love you guys...lol...spam musubi is one of my faves...thank you...lol

As promised, another classic Hero video. Keep it up
I've never had Spam. Now I want to.
Pine Key its salty. People say its nasty but I think they haven't tried it.
I don’t like it at all. Reminds me of canned ham meets Vienna sausage
Tip: Next time you can use the spam container to form your rice. 😉
Hiroyuki Terada - Diaries of a Master Sushi Chef I use it all the time and it worked well for me. Plus less dishes to wash lol.

Hot tip for those of you who don’t have a wooden sushi box, line the empty Spam can with plastic wrap, fill with enough rice for one musubi and press with the lid. Pull out by pulling up on the plastic and repeat. It’s the perfect size for the spam.
Aww man, you didn't kill anything this video. Except for me being full, you made me hungry now
Good afternoon from Austin, MN. Also known as Spam town USA!
I use the spam container. first put in some plastic wrap that come out over the edges (to help pull it out), add rice, a rice seasoning, add your prepared spam, press down, remove, wrap.
It must be the teriyaki sauce magic. Because when I made spam musubi a year ago, I didn't find it all that amazing.
We love spam musubi in Hawaii!
You can "seal" the nori by using a few grains of the cooked rice as "glue" to keep the nori from unraveling around the rice and spam. Also can add futomaki to the rice to season the rice.

What kind of souce did you put on that? It's my first time to yer channel.
SPAM is just two kinds of pork - pork shoulder and cured ham - ground up together with some extra salt and sodium nitrite, and then canned. It's a very useful way to have meat available when there's no refrigeration. I think spam musubi is a brilliant invention :-)
Good afternoon! Aloha from Hawaii :D
Not a huge fan of spam, but this looks delicious. May have to try it myself!
Cameraman mentions adding egg. That would be amazing.. a little Japanese omelet between the Spam and the Rice.. yum!
