I made this recipe many times and it is the best! The best part about it and what separates it from other recipes is that he ladles the sauce into the pan and the heat of the pan caramelizes the sauce and helps it soak into the spam balancing the saltiness. Most other recipes online do it where you just briefly soak before cooking and it's not as good. This is amazing!!
Just came to say aloha. I used your recipe and made Musubi today. It was the first time in 15 years I’ve had it, and I honestly almost cried. I miss Hawaii. This reminds me of my family, my Hawaiian roots and the small time I actually got to spend living on Kauai with extended family. (Hawaiian grandmother raised her kids and then our parents- us … on the mainland). Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. Much aloha to you. ❤
@@shanekonno2094 The main thing you didn't mention is the use of short grain rice.. or "sushi" rice without the seasoning. I make these often, and your video was great. Straight to the point and obviously a lot of fun.
I like the opening picture of the beach in Haleiwa where I grew up but never did learn how to make spam musbi. Since I’ve moved away years ago I’m gonna give it a try, thanks for making the video.
I loved this recipe, made it several times and it always satisfies the craving, especially for my husband born and raised in Hawaii but now lives on the Mainland. Thank you!
rabidwargamer68...yeah that's right & that key used to get snarled up sometimes, too. I hope this pulloff tab works better for me. I'm going to make musubi once I get the furikake, I was just at the Japanese foodstore yesterday before I saw this video, now I have to go back.
I remember when phones had rotating wheels... took forever to dial a number LOL! And cassette tapes... yep I remember recording songs off the radio that way! :D I also remember writing letters, and having pen pals. Sigh... those were the days!
The thing with those old cans, and I wish they hadn't change them, is that if you used a can opener to remove the bottom "lid" you could use the can as the nigiri mold.
Watching the 2022 Little League World Series, Hawai’i vs Texas. Several of the Hawai’i players said this was their favorite food. Though I’ve been to Hawai’i several times, I’d never heard of it! Thank you for this tutorial and these ingredients are definitely going on my next grocery list!
Aloha! I like your rice cooker and blue bowl👍🏼 thanks for this video and nice instructions, I ordered my musubi maker and will make some tomorrow!!! Can’t wait, looks yummy...yay!!! 😋
I like mine with the spam cut thin and pretty crispy, put two of those and about half the rice most people use....so yummy. Comfort food from my childhood.
I didn't know what these were called, so I asked a group of guys from Hawaii, who train at the same BJJ academy as I do. I called it a "spam wedge", and the guys fell over laughing. I have been corrected, and the term "spam wedge" lives on in infamy.
+Matthew Bottiglieri Hey Matthew, Spam Wedge...Thats a good one, never heard that one before. I've been learning BJJ for almost a year now and enjoying every minute of it. Right on!! Hope you enjoyed the video.

I saw spam musubi at a Hawaiian restaurant here in town. It was pretty spendy so I decided to try making it myself. Got nori at the store, a musubi mold and a you tube video how to. I've been making it ever since! I never thought of using furitake, I'm going to from now on. I put the Spam slice in the mold first, then the rice and press. The fold the nori with the seem underneath. Gotta get some furitake......

Nice video. I think I am going to try this for 8/08 National Spam Musubi Day!!! Oh, and no need send Spam to the mainland...hahaha. That's were it originally came from. SPAM is a canned lunch meat product that first hit shelves in 1937. It was created in Austin, Minnesota by the manufacturers Hormel Foods. I ordered aloha teriyaki and the shoyu. Is the teriyaki kind of the same how you mix with sugar or should I just use your recipe to make the sauce/marinade
It may be very similar to it. I can’t say for sure as I’ve never tried it. However, you can’t go wrong if you follow the recipe and how its cooked in the sauce. Thank you so much for watching our video. Hope you love it. Take care and God Bless
It's called Furikake. It's basically, seaweed, salt, sugar and sesame seeds. It's really good, a nice blend of flavors. Thank you for watching our videos.
Yes, I used a basic Japanese brand/style rice. Here in Hawaii, we make our rice a little sticky, it's not dry where it may fall apart. I hope this will help you to make a great musubi. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for watching our videos.
Mr & Mrs P: In Hawaii, we like love our rice, soft, fluffy and slightly sticky. Plate lunches, spam musubis, and bentos use the Medium grain (Japanese) rice, and not the long grain rice found in Chinese restaurants, which isn't as soft and doesn't stick together the way that the Japanese rice does--it's more crumbly. I wouldn't even attempt to use the instant (Uncle Ben's) rice, because that wouldn't have the right texture. :^p Use nori (seaweed) sheets that are dark, thin, crispy and has a sheen. The cheaper sheets (dull color and soft to the touch) can be rubbery, tough-to-bite into. You get what you pay for. So opt for the better quality nori.
Hello, thanks for watching. We use just plain white rice, nothing added. Except at the very end once you make the musubi, the juices from the teriyaki sauce goes very well drizzled on.
Sarah Fay absolutely. The only thing is the nori becomes softer but it is still delicious. Have a wonderful day. Thank you so much for watching our video!
Im not sure about a substitue for sugar...the taste might turn out differently if you use artificial sweeteners. Hope you're able to find something that works for you. The furikake alone with just shoyu would be pretty good as well, even if you couldn't use the sugar. All the best!
So my girlfriend is Native American. Apparently they love SPAM. So I just tried SPAM for the first time after 30 Spamless years. I was kinda wondering what kind other twists people would put on this recipe. I'm Dutch so I thought right away of putting some Sambal and Ketjap Manis. I'm also I big fan of Gochujang with my eggs. I saw versions with egg. There is also a Wasabi mayo at my grocery store that I've been staring at but not knowing what to do with. What do other people do?
Question....do some people make this with sushi rice? Meaning the rice that has rice vinegar, sugar and salt? Thank you. I know there is no correct way, but Im wondering what is the most popular way?
Hello :) thanks for watching. Although it is possible to do that way, most in Hawaii do not use vinegar. The furikake seasoning had some sugar/salt. Most popular is the way shown in the video. Thank you again and hope you can enjoy making one soon :)
I made this recipe many times and it is the best! Is the recipe written down anywhere? Which Aloha Shoyu product did you use?...the soy sauce, teriaki, ??What brand furikake did you use?
Thanks for watching. We used the regular Aloha Shoyu. The brand of Furikaki was "Nishima", "Aji Nori Furikaki".
Do u just cook white rice? Do u add anything to it?
Hello, thanks for watching. We use just plain white rice, nothing added. Except at the very end once you make the musubi, the juices from the teriyaki sauce goes very well drizzled on.

Liquid stevia works well as a sweetener for musubi sauce. The saltyness of the spam and other ingredients destroys the normal icky aftertaste!

Maple syrup works great

Most popular is the way shown in the video. Thank you again and hope you can enjoy making one soon :)
@@shanekonno2094 thank you for clearing that up. It will be easier to make now :)
Is it bad I was singing with the music. Anyways that looked so good!
