To me this is the best grand final battle of all time, Not for what happened, but for the robots in it. They both set the standard of things to come and the main styles of robots we still see today.
I don't think we as a society talk enough about how Steg-O-Saw-Us was a reserve robot who got subbed into their heat at the 11th hour and yet made it all the way to the Grand Final, and had Hypno-Disc on the ropes for much of their final fight.
I think they fell victim to their own robot - that flipper just isn't a good weapon unfortunately. They displayed some fantastic driving skill, easily running circles around hypno-disc before the blade destroyed the tracks.
Chaos II winning Series 3 is my favorite moment of Robot Wars. People love Hypnodisc but Chaos II took a good 3 solid hits from the spinner and still handled well after. That’s not luck, they built a great robot that can take damage.
I was annoyed at the time because I preferred the bots that actually did damage, rather than just flipped. But I can't deny that Chaos 2 deserved to win. Plus, I'm glad it curb-stomped that boring Cassius clone, Firestorm
Hypn-Discs spinner was nly working at about half power in the final though, they belt was stretched and they didn;t have a spare (oops). Might have ben different if they'd had one, but we'll never know. Both very good robots though and changed the shape of robot wars in general.
@@misterwishart Boring? I'd say that Firestorm was an _improvement_ of Cassius. I'd also say that Gravedigger was comparatively a boring clone of Cassius for being much slower, though even then it was consistent with Gravedigger's theme. I'd describe it as a zombie equivalent of Cassius.
Coolest possible matchup in the final, Chaos II and Hypnodisc are probably my two favourite robots of all time. Chaos II is a force to be reckoned with though. Firestorm and Hypnodisc where two of the best robots ever seen at this point and it handled both of them with ease. Also I'm sorry but how on earth did Uldor not win the best sportsmanship award? Nonsense.
I'd always been fairly dismissive of Series 3 and in a way I think there's some truth to that. The one-on-one fights could drag out especially with the still-poor standard of roboteering at the time, and it was much more about the arena and house robots. I still think if they'd taken a more passive stance it would have been a much fairer series - the number of robots ruined by the arena spikes is volumes on its' own. But having watched these last few episodes in particular I think I see why people hold it up - because it was the birth of British Robot Combat as we know it. It was in its' infancy and mistakes were made, but it was here that we saw so much change. The prevalance of flippers - so much so that 'Brit Flipper' is a term commonly used in combat because it's what we evolved thanks to Chaos 2 and Firestorm, and to another extent, Cassius. The World Championship was what I think fired up the eagerness for international competition especially amongst the Dutch - the fact that Techno-Lease came back as Slicer to win the first championship in the Netherlands had to come from somewhere, and no doubt it was from the desire to get back at Razer and Behemoth. We saw that an axe wasn't as effective as we thought - after Killertron, Mortis and to a lesser extent Killerhurtz were hyped up in S2, none of the semi finalists had one. We saw the birth of push-bots in 101 and Steg-o-saw-us that culminated in Tornado, Storm 2 and most recently Shockwave. And the final between a CO2 flipper and a spinner was echoed wonderfully by Apollo and Carbide last year - even down to how Apollo would take on the house robots and Carbide's clutch was its' weak point - an advancement from Ken Rose's attempts to preserve the motor, but still the same issue as every big spinner faces. You hit them with your face and see what breaks first. So while I'm still not convinced it's in the top half of the 8 series we've had so far, I can see the value of Series 3. Thank you for uploading them once more, looking forward to Extreme 1!
One of the best Grand Final episodes, not necessarily for the length of battles but definitely for the suspense, events and quality of robots. The actual final was over relatively quickly, though taking on the House Robots is always great fun! This episode more notably saw the first instance if someone being flipped out the arena which was brilliant!

He's much more serious in the later seasons. Even during next season, where he is going for win#2 . He seems more confident, or at least less amazed at what his robot can do. It makes sense, but he just seems to have less personality
For such a conceptually cool tournament it's one of the worst things to watch ever on television. 90% of the robots who play in Robot Soccer are pathetically inactive, and the active ones predominantly do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to. It's not even because of the robot designs or functionality, it's the driving ability that absolutely fucking sucks xD Haha. They needed teams like Razer, Chaos 2, and Behemoth more often in Robot Soccer tournaments.
One of the oddest things I think to come out of this episode of Robot Wars is that while Firestorm ended up being the first robot to be thrown over the arena side wall by Chaos 2, it ended up itself throwing more robots out of the arena than Chaos 2
@@brainspider It wasn't the disc that was the issue, it was the damage to the rear wheel that killed it's maneuverability, but that was the story of Hypno-Disc something simple would always get in the way, Series 3 it was the lack of the self righter, Series 4 the uncovered wheels, Series 5 was a crazy moment against Bigger Brother after it had utterly trashed it (which robbed us of the match we all wanted to see Hypnodisc vs Razer) & by Series 6 the other robots had moved on so much in terms of power that it was outclassed
A lot of it is due to how it originally aired. Chaos 2 vs Firestorm - what a classic! Initially I thought Firestorm appeared to have a slight edge in the manouvring, until Chaos 2 flipped it. Whilst I'm glad Ultor didn't win the Best Sportsmanship Award, I also never would've even had it nominated. Yes, the judges' decision _should've_ gone to Big Brother in that battle, and the Golders did the right thing by handing their place in the Semi-Finals over to it, but that wasn't the real reason they withdrew. The real reason was that they weren't going to be available beyond their Heat anyway, and in this case they had a convenience to avoid telling Joe Watts "Yeah, we only made ourselves available for this Heat since we never expected to win it, so... you go to the Semi-Finals instead. Bye!" and rushing out the door feeling awkward about it. Also, regarding the Robotic Soccer Championship, I'm not sure I agree with the final decision there. Whilst I get that Velocirippa was immobilised fully and so too practically was The General for a significant amount of time, Gnasher was only immobile because Evil Weevil overturned it, which isn't what was supposed to be done to win. I mean, if you attacked a player in a real football match, it would be a foul. Why not do the same here and disqualify Evil Weevil or something for overturning Gnasher? But then maybe the attack was allowed because of Robot Wars' main purpose, which _is_ combat. Still, highly remarkable how the robot that won the Championship was the one robot that never scored a goal!
