The bigger brother showed will power of a champion the reason why I love this robot. An amazing crew, fantastic tenacity and brute courage and strength to get to the stage that they got to. I couldn't be more proud of what Bigger brother did during this wars. WHAT A MACHINE!!!
Hypno-Disc is my all time favourite, but I always had to hand it to Big Brother, they did amazingly well and deserved to get to where they did, can't fault them at all. Also, Bigger Brother were my 3rd favourite so I was still happy.
@@challenger2031 I agree but the trouble is I think they should have allowed Hypno Disc through, that pit thing was a fluke and the final battle against Razer wasn't exactly close, I think they should have remembered series 3 and what Ultor did for them....and paid it forward. Don't get me wrong I loved that team but they could have been a bit less proud and a bit more sportsman like.
Hypno-Disc lost on the most devastating of manuvers but BB did go in KNOWING what they had to do. The front of the machine was just too vulnerable to that destructive weapon so they tried to ram it and use the spinning momentum from being hit to get behind it, flipper ready. THAT is genius. Indeed, a shame we never got Razer vs Hypno-Disc. The 2 kings of destruction....It would really all come down to who would land the first blow. HD has an insanely destructive weapon and Razer's reliability could cost it with a strong enough smash on it's shielded internals, but HD's internals are most at risk from penetrating attacks from above, one crush from that beak and it's over. I'd go for Razer given it is slightly more agile, but only 60% of the time. Also very nice sportsmanship from the HD team offering to help put BB back together a bit. I enjoy stories of respect for perseverance/engineering from the teams (Razer themselves respected onslaught enough they didn't want to go after them in Series 4 once the battle was won....and this lead to the legendary destruction of Matilda)
Nearly 20 years later... And my heart still breaks watching hypno disk go down that pit... We were robbed of a hypno disc v razer final. Utterly agonising.
For me, series 5 was PEAK robot wars... some very intense battles.... hell I remember chaos 2 vs wild thing, that was an amazing fight.. Chaos 2 no longer reigning champion so George had to try harder etc.... Hypno disc working VERY well... Razer working Very well.... All house robots working very well, a proper fully functioning ref bot etc. Series 6 was also good but controversial final etc.... series 7 had way too many wedge flippers.
@@unapologeticallylizzy uh, yeah.. the best robot of its entire time - subjectively and objectively. Going against the mainstream just for the sake of going against the mainstream, is actually really mainstream. Razer is a beautiful piece of machinery, and it was the most powerful robot in Robot Wars, it's almost entirely uncontested. So yeah, *INEVITABLE.* winner.
@@Frosty_tha_Snowman I'm not going against mainstream just for the sake of it. My opinions are my opinions. Yes, Razer is an incredible robot but the team are too cocky and the robot also has a history of being unreliable. Also, there are many other amazing robots - Chaos 2 was a lot more reliable, for example, Hypno-disc... Razer is a good robot and undeniably one of the best, but not indisputably THE best.
@@unapologeticallylizzy actually, it is objectively the best, with the best record in Robot Wars of all time, at 40-5, the only other one so renowned is Biteforce at 26-1, no one else is even close.. lol
@@unapologeticallylizzy and 1 of its losses is totally bullcrap and everyone knows it. It never would have or should have lost to Tornado. It couldn't fit in the pit, thats straight up illegal, but even then, it was immobilized by hanging suspended over the pit, that's a knockout. The argument was that razer was also immobilized at the time, but like, that's just a double k.o. and a judges decision which Razer would have easily won. So really, it's more like 40-4. Also, like you said, it had reliability issues - at first.. lol that fact actually helps prove my point, because the only other matches they lost, were when their robot beat itself. You think what you want to about Razer, but these are facts.
For those who didn't notice, at 13:26, when Bigger Brother were pushing Hypno-Disc, the flipper was actually fired despite it being mangled, and it actually had enough effect to lift two of HD's wheels of the ground - In that situation, Hypno-Disc wouldn't have had any manoeuvrability at all, and by the time BB's scoop was retracted from underneath the spinner, Hypno-Disc's front wheels were already dangling above the pit - they couldn't have avoided the pit once BB pushed them there: they had no traction. If Joe Watts hadn't used the flipper there, Hypno might've - MIGHT'VE - been able to get away. So it was actually a incredibly well-timed use of the weapon from the then-eight-year-old roboteer.
I've Always loved an Underdog Story from time to time & there is no Better Underdog Story in the history of Robot Wars than the Story of Bigger Brother.
This is the last episode where Craig Charles wears his trademark black leather robe and Robot Wars t-shirt. For series 6 and 7 he would wear Robot Wars themed F1-like overalls.
The black robe made Robot Wars seem more underground and gritty. But the overalls made it seem more professional. If that makes sense. The fashion is irrelevant, this show was awesome!
Craig Charles's most significant attire is his aura of charm, enthusiasm and empathy with the roboteers that need a bit of cheering up and encouragement.
Not gona lie i love that before and after shot of firestorm a true warior bashed smashed torn and shreaded but still figting love it thats how a true war machine should look each one of those scratches and dents represent how far they went
Bigger Brother out there taking those hits and keeping going was a sight to see. If a robot could talk, i'm it would have been saying "i can do this all day!"
Can we just appreciate the Firestorm 3 made it this far after coming through the losers melee? And then got revenge on the robot who put em in that melee in the first place? Firestorm will always be a favourite. But of course. I do love Razer and I always will. You can tell how much they wanted that title.
In my opinion of the 5th wars, the best battles are Wheely Big Cheese vs Axe Awe, Chaos 2 vs Wild Thing, Tornado vs Diotoir, Hypno-Disc vs Bigger Brother, Wild Thing vs Trouble 'N' Strife and Prizephita Mach 2, and Razer vs Firestorm 3 (2).
I'm an actor/aspiring TV presenter and with every strength of my enthusiasm, I wanna bring this back and I wanna present it in the style of the original cause it was the better season in my personal opinion. But every season is amazing
I feel like all 4 bots here deserve to have won at least one major championship, idk how firestorm and bigger brother were still running after all that damage from hypnodisc and razer over the finals... Legendary season of tv this.
Well here we are. The end of what is by a relatively wide margin the best series of Robot Wars as far as I'm concerned. And what a grand final lineup. 3 undeniable Robot Wars legends, and one robot who up until this point had never really made an impression, but who, from this point on, would itself become a legend. Little bit of filler here but given the fact that there could only be 4 fights maximum (And before this both of the previous series' loser's melees had been cancelled so there could have only been 3) you can't really blame them. Hypno Disc vs Bigger Brother. The absolutely infamous fight, and deservedly so. This one just misses out on the top spot of best RW battle of all time for me. BB sticking to it's tried and true tactic from it's fight against Mauler in Battlebots of reversing into Hypno, an initially it worked very very well, as Jonathan rightly pointed out. Ian Watts made a bit of an error after that though by letting Hypno get up to speed and that's where the punishment for BB really started. You have to admire the resilience of BB though given how Hypno had absolutely demolished basically all of its previous opponents who it had been able to get more than 1 hit on up to this point, while BB just seems to tank hit after hit and keep running. Honestly this whole fight almost reminds me of the Black Knight scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Hypno just keeps hitting BB but they just refuse to die. When they try to operate the flipper and the hinge at the back just gives way it really puts into perspective just how damaged BB is yet still they keep on rolling. From that point though Hypno really seemed a bit sluggish, and BB started pushing them around a bit, and then of course the impossible happens. A brilliantly timed push of the pit release by Ian Watts and it was all over for Hypno. I can't imagine what being in the audience for that fight must have been like given how Bigger Brother had never really made an impact up until Series 5. I know I've moaned about this in many of my comments on this series but fights like this really do make me miss the days when robots could take huge amounts of damage like BB did here but keep on working, because it leads to spectacular fights and upsets like this. Absolutely magic. Razer vs Firestorm. And we'll follow that incredible fight up with another one. Two bots who even at this stage are undeniably Robot Wars favourites. You'd expect a great fight and that's exactly what we got fortunately. Razer gets hold of Firestorm right off the bat as in Series 5 and 6 Razer's front ground clearance is absolutely incredible (Though ironically in Extreme 2 Firestorm would become the first, and to this day only robot to get under Razer frontally) and the Razer team take full advantage of that by crumpling down onto Firestorm's shell. Graham Bone's aggressive driving seems to be a bit of a disadvantage here against Ian Lewis' highly passive, but very effective "Wait for them to come to us" style as he keeps driving right into the waiting beak of Razer, and with the flipper jammed wide open it's basically inviting Razer to get in there and crush the flipper innards. When the claw came down and buckled that ram it was difficult not to physically cringe. But then Firestorm finds it's groove and Graham's aggressive driving starts working in its favour and that pin on the sidewall certainly had the Razer team worried, as Jonathan rightly noted. I know there's a precedent for it and it's completely within the rules but as a blatant Firestorm fanboy the Refbot removing Razer from the sidewall still makes me ever so slightly sad :D. That said, even after Razer was freed Firestorm seemed to be in the ascendancy, pushing Razer straight across the pit, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES. I also think Jonathan may well have been right that Razer's beak wasn't operating at full power as it certainly seemed to be having trouble gripping Firestorm, let alone punching the holes that it did with such ease in their meeting in Extreme 1. This is one of those fights that most DEFINITELY requires the cliche "I wouldn't want to be the judges on that one" as both bots were so dogged and persistent in their attacks. Whichever way it goes the losing bot is getting a bit robbed, and while I'm a huge Firestorm fanboy, I can absolutely see why the judges went for Razer. No problems with that decision at all. Loser's Melee. In the last video I talked about 'the things that could've been' in the Firestorm vs Hypno Disc fight... of course I knew that this was coming up though :D Would have been nice to see how the fight would have gone had Firestorm had a working flipper but given the absolute hell Firestorm had been through to reach this stage I can't blame them for just abandoning the flipper and adding extra armour. You can tell right from the start that Hypno doesn't really have an answer for the sheer aggression of Graham Bone's driving other than 'try to keep the disc pointed at them' and, while it may be a simple tactic, it did show signs of working. I know people call V-Max a Firestorm clone but you'd have thought it was the other way around with the way Firestorm's side panels flew off after Hypno hit them :P Graham Bone did exactly the right thing though by keeping within touching distance of Hypno as that flywheel never really got up to speed once in the fight and that allowed Firestorm to control Hypno and eventually slam dunk them, as well as itself, into the pit. I'm sure the Firestorm team didn't want to win via their opponent having to retire, but when it's Hypno disc you're fighting it must be incredibly satisfying for THEM to be the one leaving the arena with irreparable damage. Lil bit more filler before the finale... Bigger Brother vs Razer. Talk about David vs Goliath, although in this case David has a broken leg and one dodgy eye after a previous fight... Let's be completely honest it was pretty clear by this point that Razer had won the series. Even if BB had managed to beat Hypno the fight before it had taken an absolute pasting doing so and despite the amazing efforts of just about every roboteer in the pits it was hardly in pristine condition. I've not much to say about the fight itself given how much of a beatdown it was. Not the best end to an absolutely insurmountably good series, but the quality of the rest of the fights in the episode more than makes up for it. Congratulations to Razer. I may not be a fan of it but I know plenty of people are and after the horrendous luck they'd had in prior series they certainly deserved a title at some point and here they got one... if only I could say the same for Firestorm :P Thanks to NJGW for uploading this series and allowing me to relive the fond memories I had of watching it as a kid. Looking forward to Series 6, and sorry for polluting your comments section with my verbose ramblings :P
I got a more Rocky vs Apollo Creed vibes from Rocky II watching Hypno-Disc vs Bigger Brother, HD could have backed off in that fight, taken it to a judges decision and would've won it easily but they seemed intent on going for the knockout because of their last fight vs Dominator 2 when people weren't happy with their tactics in that fight. They undoubtedly gave BB an absolute beating but BB was just built in the equivalent of a brick wall that HD had no chance of breaking and towards the end it looked like HD were worn out. They should have done what Carbide did to Eruption in S9 and just not go full on attack mode, You could tell during that fight Carbide were being super careful not to use up all the power in their spinner to avoid tiring themselves out. Overall though HD just went far too aggressive very early on and paid the price for it.
For the love of god PLEASE RAMBLE FOR EVERY EPISODE! Love your reviews! Any chance you'd be able to DM and chat? Wanna hear your opinion on some other fights in RW ^^
Don't worry I intend to keep this up as long as people keep reading. I had no idea that anyone actually looked forward to these rambles. As for my opinions on other fights you'll just have to wait and see :P
I enjoy them too :D And Firestorm did win the commonwealth carnage in Extreme 2, along with the satisfying achievement of being the only robot EVER to flip Mr Psycho. [Ik that he fell over when carrying Junkyard Queen in German RW, but that was entirely by accident. Graham went and owned that moment brilliantly - and his justification of the move made it even better. "Well, someone had to do it, didn't they?"] And their consistency was brilliant. It's quite disappointing that the only front-hinged flipper in the rebooted series' so far was Push to Exit; I took one look at it and went "Nope, that's gonna fail." I'm surprised that FHFs haven't caught on as much as they should have.
To those people bitching about Razer being freed, it was in the rulebook, as mentioned on the Razer website and by Chris Reynolds. ...the most controversial moment came when we were pushed against an arena grinder. The rear wheel of Razer became wedged under it and the House Robots intervened to free us. This seemed unfair to some people but Chris Reynolds (head House Roboteer) explained it thus:- "the grinders are not intended as an entrapment device, it is our fault that the construction of the arena allows this to happen and so we felt it only fair to free Razer"."
@@TheKingFlurry What are you talking about? Firestorm wasn't stuck on any of the angle grinders in that battle. It drove underneath one at one point but quickly got back out.
I like Razer, and I am no fan of Firestorm 3, but what struck me as odd in their match is that despite Firestorm 3 ramming Razer into the CPZ, the house robots never attacked Razer, like they didn't want to scratch his paint or something. When if it had been any other robot, they would have used their weapons on it. I noticed particularly a time in this match when Sgt. Bash was in the perfect position to clamp down on Razer after Firestorm pushed them into the CPZ. Now it makes me want to watch other Razer fights, to see if he gets a pass whenever another robot pushed them into the CPZ. Not that many had the chance.
sterlingholobyte they probably rigged razers heat a bit in such a way that way razer would seem indestructable whilst not ruining many favorites. Razer is a great bot, and by far the most successful squeeze bot, but alot has kind of been given to them. Either that or bash's driver is a huge razer fan.
I had just made the exact observation not knowing if anyone noticed but it feels good to see other people didn’t fall for this crap. Honestly I’m glad BattleBots ended up being the surviving show. I’ve just binged Robot Wars up to now, so many examples of house robot bias. Equally embarrassing was the episode where Widows Revenge clearly lost its match, but they gave it the decision because they wanted the Razer vs wives plot point.
@@esunsalmista No, Widow's Revenge did not lose to Sumpthing, let alone clearly. Sumpthing was the one with affected mobility on one side whereas Widow's Revenge was still fully mobile. Therefore it's perfectly justified the latter got the judges' decision. And if the officials wanted to have that "plot point" so badly of Team Razer facing their other halves, why wouldn't they just put the two robots against each other IN THE FIRST ROUND? That doesn't make any sense.
To think.. we could have had a Razer vs Hypnodisc final. It would have been hard to watch those 2 beautiful machines mangle eachother, but it would have been the most epic clash of titans in all of robot combat.
Easily my favorite episode of all time, rivaled only by series 4 semi B (mostly because of splinter vs hypno). Not only does this episode have my favorite fight of all time (hypno and big bro), but has 2 other fights that are probably top 20 for me (the ones that aren't Razer and big bro). Yes, as a hypno fanboy, I am sad to not see the hypno vs Razer fight, but let's be honest, that fight would end up being much more disappointing for all parties, as it would either be a OHKO by hypno or Razer grabbing and immediately pitting hypno. Better to leave the verdict on that unclear.
Now if the draw had been different, Hypno-disc vs Razer, we might have got a different winner. Sometimes the result does depend on the luck of the draw. (And I would have loved to see a Firestorm vs Bigger Brother flipper battle). But what a fight that was with Hypno-disc vs Bigger Brother. BB taking massive damage that would have destroyed many bots, but kept battling on with its back towards HD's spinner (does that count as aggression?) and eventually managing to push Hypno-disc into the pit - even the Rose family were cheering! (And they were good sports about it and gave BB full credit for its win). So then Firestorm had to face the one bot most uniquely designed to damage it, Razer, but extraordinarily Firestorm seemed as hard to knock out as Bigger Brother had been. Razer's death grip failed to kill it and Firestorm almost pitted Razer a couple of times and, at times, was slamming Razer across the arena. Most bots became helpless and lost all drive when Razer's wedge got under them; Firestorm's unique shape meant it could keep driving even with the front off the ground. Based solely on damage, Razer had to win it. If the winner was decided on most unexpected performance by a bot against all the odds, it would have to be Firestorm. So then a battered Firestorm had to face Hypno-disc, the other most damaging bot in the competition. That is tough! Philippa pissed me off trying to persuade Hypno-disc to wreck Firestorm, seriously the producers were complete arseholes. But Firestorm took out after Hypnodisc like its disc wasn't there, rushing HD around the arena until they both went in the pit simultaneously. I'd like to think they'd agreed on that. It also deprived the house thugs of anything to wreck, which is always satisfying. The judges called for a rematch but HD said they'd lost drive (had they really? Or did they just not see the point of undergoing more damage for third place? The Roses didn't seem to be too upset about it). I think technically Firestorm won anyway since they were pushing HD at the time so HD went into the pit milliseconds before Firestorm did. I would have loved to see Bigger Brother repeat its performance and defeat Razer, but realistically that was unlikely unless Razer broke down. This was the least interesting fight of the final - though Bigger Brother did keep running for the entire fight. That's an incredibly tough bot. I reckon Hypno-disc, Firestorm and Bigger Brother are the three best bots never to win a series of Robot Wars.
If only Hypno-Disc vs Bigger Brother had gone to a judges' decision. Hypno vs Razor would have been spectacular, however I was also very happy for BB to go through (I loved both bots though Hypno is my favourite).
Well, you can't expect any battle to be tense and entertaining just because you want it to be. The objective is to win, which Razer did objectively and fairly, and that's all that matters. If something entertaining happens during, wonderful. If not, that's just what real-life competition is. It's not like with professional wrestling.
@@Weird.Dreams I’m sorry - what? What’s that got to do with this? I was pointing out how competition is the primary objective over entertainment, and you come out with some allegation of Team Razer making some special request? In any case, I don’t believe you - I’ve also read that _both_ teams wanted to avoid each other unless unavoidable, due to each other’s damage potential. Besides, Mentorn wouldn’t have _had_ to carry out any special requests when they were the ones in charge. In any case, it doesn’t change the fact that Razer won the UK Championship fairly. So no, it’s not shit. What you say is.
Firestorm's match against Razer proved how amazing their driving was. Only them and Pussycat could come anywhere near Razer (not including times they broke down and Tornado's cage which, while inventive and clever and I praise them for that, I don't rate). I always wonder how far an average robot could go if they had Graham Bone, David Gribble, or Kim Davies driving
"not including times they broke down and Tornado's cage which, while inventive and clever and I praise them for that, I don't rate" Keep crying, lgbtqtrd.
Holy Hell in a Handbasket I SWORE Hypnodisc was gonna win that Bigger Brother fight! But then again I know they've never won a war despite never seeing this one. The sound is out of sync in the video when they speak
Either JP wasn't listening or he wasn't paying attention here. We knew the flipper was deactivated and replaced with armour, so what is his statement at 26:10 in reference to? I'm not the first to mention this, but as the other comment is buried somewhere in a longer response than mine, let's just bring this out into the open! Thinking about it, though - did he even know? Is he privy to the talk from the pits?
THE ROBOTEER WE NEED YOU WITH YOUR INSIGHTFUL, AWESOME AND REALLY AGREEEABLE REVIEWS. Also I wanna hear your take on the hypno vs bigger brother fight :o
The Best Design Award for Series 5 is the one trophy of Razer's I don't agree with the robot even being in contention for, much less winning. I agree with Razer winning it in Series 2 when it was new and innovative, and again in Series 3 when it was improved with the unique srimech, but by Series 5 nothing more was new. Razer wasn't even nominated for the award in Series 4, so why was it nominated here?
Ryan O'Donovan i mean what new designs have been at all anything to worry about in season 5? There really wasnt anything new other than what i have nicknamed the duel disks and those arent exactly effective, I think the most successful of those was (dammit forget the name, they were betas replacement in season one of abc battlebots) back when it was a normal midweight. Aside from that you get terrorhurtz.
Question: if the Series 5 Hypno-Disc and Firestorm 3 had a battle where both were 100% and no one-hit knockout occurred, who would actually win? Also, shame Barber-Ous and Crushtacean did not receive nominations for Best Original Entry.
Thanks. Have to admit, the Robot Wars Awards was one of the most confusing segments in each series, because as you have mentioned, some of the nominations were outdated or made no sense at all (S3 being nominated for Most Promising Newcomer, for example).
@@TheGood888 I think it could be argued that S3 was sufficiently different from Sting to justify calling it a "newcomer". I do think it was a bit ridiculous how they acted as if the team were complete newcomers though - they had been in series 2 and 3 before.
Poor driving choices by Hypnodisc. That was their season. They would have been the one to finally rip apart Razer Plus Razer was immobilized against Firestorm and House robots saved him
Wrong. That doesn’t legally constitute an immobilisation, because Razer was stuck on an arena hazard that’s not supposed to trap competitors in place. That’s a rule. And all robots were separated from those predicaments to see if they were actually dead or just stuck where they shouldn’t have been, not just Razer. People just think it got special treatment because _they_ were the real biased ones, only that they were against the robot. They scoff at Razer for the stupidest of reasons; doing nothing more than naturally being better than most competitors without cheating, which is what you’re SUPPOSED to do in the competition.
Why did the house robots not even try to attack Hypno-Disc when it got pushed into the CPZ by Bigger Brother?? I appreciate that the producers wanted to see all robots that were going to advance be in the best shape for the final but when Bigger Brother took that much damage and still kept the strength to push the opposing robot into the CPZ it seems unfair to me that Shunt only comes in to hit BB and then heads back home, even though Hypnodisc is clearly still in the CPZ for like 5-10 seconds after Shunt leaves
The rules never said that a House Robot _has_ to attack when a robot is in one of those zones, much less a robot that drives into one or is pushed there. Only that they’re allowed to attack if any competitor is there. And the House Robots were never there to be fair anyway, as long as they didn’t step out of their boundaries.
regardless of damage to Firestorm III, that was a close ass fight. I almost would give it to Firestorm for brute force and just going for it then entire time.
Not good enough, since the damage Razer caused was more significant. Sure, damage can be outdone in other ways if done greatly enough, but it wasn't enough for Firestorm here.
you are correct, man. Hypno-Disc was suppose to compete the 3rd/4th place playoff against Stinger in the 4th wars, but because of Pussycat who push them into Shunt's CPZ, Shunt damaged Hypno-Disc's spinning disc gear. And because of that, Stinger won the bronze metal via default. A little deja vu just like the 3rd wars when Steg-O-Saw-us took a lot of damage from Hypno-Disc, and they're unable to compete in the 3rd/4th place playoff.
@@jhibbitt1 actually Stinger was fine, but Hypno-Disc had ripped itself to shreds internally when Shunt hit and stopped the disc so they couldn't compete. Much like Firestorm in this series, Stinger came 3rd by default when Hypno-Disc was no longer able to compete.
Rematch? It was Firestorm pushing Hypnodisc. Firestorm becoming one of my fav robots. They DID A W E S O M E job in semi-finals and in grand final. Without weapon, heavily damaged from the start (fcking Matilda, what a stupid idea to give her that disc) but driving was BEST POSSIBLE!!!
Well according to Jonathan (not Pearce, the guy in the comments), Rob makes better analysis than I do, so I guess I have to step up my game in S6. Filler! This is why more machines in the Grand Final is a good idea, either that or take the Battlebots reboot and have a rumble with the losers or crowd favourites. Especially in this series with a few disappointing losses in the Heat Finals, it would have been nice to bring back some of them. Prizephita, Diotior and Stinger perhaps. 9:29 "Let the Worst Robot Win?" What, three way melee between Mobot, Bee-capitator, Juggernot 2? Actually come to think of it that might be hilarious to watch. 13:54 Jesus fuck, there's nothing left of it. Rob always got down my throat for comparing this to the Grand Final of Series 9 but look at that sheer, dogged determination from Bigger Brother. Robots have thrown fights against both Hypno Disc and Carbide before (Terror-Bull in S4, Crackers 'n' Smash in S9) but Bigger Brother and Eruption did not let go, not even when they were barely working. It seems Ian Watts is a better builder than Adrian Oates though - despite the horrendous damage to the sidepods, Bigger Brother never lost the driving skill it was famed for. As for the upset, the closest I can remember to seeing it live was when I watched the S2 final, and was heartbroken when Cassius lost (be easy, I was twelve or something), it must have felt the same, but like PA, you have to respect Bigger Brother, and Hypno Disc certainly did. You can hear the boos in the crowd but that's been a staple ever since HD tore Robogeddon to pieces. Wonder how much was genuine delight and how much was dubbed over a la Typhoon 2/Storm 2 I'm convinced Firestorm vs Razer happened five times putting it up there with the other great rivalries of RW, but seems it only happened three times. Funny that. 17:57 "Is that flipper wedged open?" Jonathan (Pearce, not the commentor below), we just had a long shot of Razer grabbing one of the pistons and completely BUCKLING IT OUT OF PLACE, do you THINK Firestorm have an active weapon at this point? 18:37 Oh, the moment of fear for Razer fans at this point. Flashbacks to Pussycat, Aggrobot, Inquisitor. You can hear the boos of the crowd as it got free which is bizarre for me, I figured the RW crowd would have been on Razer's side - but maybe it is a bit awkward. Remind me of the ruling, wasn't Refbot only meant to free robots trapped by themselves rather than if they'd been pushed there by the opponent? 21:35 Who the fuck is he and what team was he supporting? o.O After the walkover that Razer had against Firestorm in Extreme 1 I was honestly expecting something along the lines, but Razer had to work for this fight... which I'll be honest, I'm not sure I'd have given them. If we count up Style, Control, Damage and Aggression - Razer wins on Damage, Firestorm wins on Control and Aggression. That leaves Style which apparently Razer can't lose - as much as I wanted to give Razer its' dues for winning a championship, I feel a bit cheated about this one. I suppose it's the same feeling some people have towards Stinger/Chaos 2 - that the big seed went through because they'd already lost Hypno-Disc. I'm on board with the C2 decision, not so much with Razer, but I imagine Mentorn would have torn Noel Sharkey to pieces if he'd given it to Firestorm. Yay, TV drama. 25:29 That is just tragic, look at that! When it came into the arena in its' first episode it was gleaming yellow and red, and now it looks like... well, one of the live circuit competitors to be brutally honest. Spirit of Roadblock award for having a wedge and determination and nothing else. Credit to them showing a side-by-side later - can we get a gif of that? 26:08 "Is the Firestorm Flipper working?" Jonathan's dementia only gets worse from here on out, ladies and gentlemen. Credit to seeing one of Firestorm's wheels - I kinda always liked the look that Snowstorm had of having them free, and it looks good here too. Another unpopular opinion there by the crowd but maybe they came round. Credit to Hypno Disc for being sports about it, I mean who would claim their robot was mobile to go for a rematch and not actually be... oh wait a minute... Maybe their actions against Dominator 2 were a little bit more understandable in this sort of circumstance. I personally feel that HD should have gone in for the kill of D2 since the golden triangle never really offered any threat, but looking at how aggressive slams and hard armour killed Hypno's drivetrain, maybe they really were in danger of being shaken about. Or maybe they were mobile and this was karma, and they figured it was fair to give it to Firestorm after a dodgy judges' decision. Who knows. Yay TV drama. 30:37 I called this back in D2's heat - Derek's match ended the very second it was counted out - the judges have such a hard on for CNC porn, no wonder Rapid got in. Would have been nice if we actually got to see some of that engineering, or why it had been given, something Techno Games was actually good at, showing how the winners worked. Low brow audience. Yay TV drama. 32:38 Obligatory 'S3 aren't newcomers!' complaint. 33:54 Surprised you didn't make that face Vinnie Blood pulls into the video thumbnail 37:47 Is that... Razer... RELEASING A ROBOT FOR THE 30SEC PIN RULE? I never thought I'd see the day. :D 39:15 Props to Ian stopping Joe getting tangled up in the flipper release cable. Ian knew they probably weren't going to win the judges' decision, but it's impossible not to feel for Joe and Ellie in a way - we were all emotionally charged brats at some point, and they'd just lost the Grand Final - Joe didn't get to do very much, but then not many flippers do get to do very much against Razer, unless they're named Behemoth or Gemini. Again, maybe the BB team had a point that Razer wouldn't charge them, but that's another thing - Razer can't really give a knockout kill, and trying to put them in the pit is too risky with Ian Watts' driving. It's not good sportsmanship, it's not good TV, but you gotta admit there's at least some point to it. As for Razer, I'm firmly not a fan of it, but at the end of the day, you gotta have props to it. Like Carbide in S9, it was the best engineered robot of its' day, and short of gimmicks and very specific machines, there wasn't an awful lot you could do to it. Bigger Brother probably knew their best chance was getting Razer in the pit, and Ian and Simon just didn't let 'em. Even a wounded tiger has claws and teeth. Seeing Ian Lewis with tears in his eyes is definitely a surprise but again, perhaps not surprising considering the heartbreak they've gone through. Also 'thanks to our fans on the internet' - not a phrase you'll hear from any team nowadays, probably. So that was S5. And overall, I think it's what you could easily call the 'quintessential' Robot Wars. Straight knockouts, two seeds in a heat, and some cracking battles with just a little bit of controversy - not enough to sour the note though. S4 will always be my favourite personally, but this comes a very close second behind it. Thanks again for uploading all this, NJGW, and looking forward to Series 6! Any chance of HD Techno Games though?
"Remind me of the ruling, wasn't Refbot only meant to free robots trapped by themselves rather than if they'd been pushed there by the opponent?" I don't think so. As a general rule, robots that were stuck on arena hazards were routinely freed regardless of whether it was self-inflicted or not. If a robot got stuck on the arena wall itself, though....well, I've never got that. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and there's very little consistency. I guess they must flip a coin or something.
I think a better question is - how can you call Bigger Brother “disabled”? Don’t you think you’re exaggerating a bit too much when it was clearly functional and battle-worthy? It just couldn’t slot its flipper underneath Razer. That’s just an example of bad luck.
Razer and Hypno-Disc was a fight everyone wanted to see, but Bigger Brother had other plans. Despite being two of the most destructive robots we've ever seen, neither of them could stop Bigger Brother.
Uh - hello? Do you think Razer would’ve been let through following that botch if Widow’s Revenge wasn’t already IMMOBILISED AND COUNTED OUT?! You don’t even need to watch the battle in full - it’s just basic logic. 🙄
Yes, because the angle grinders aren’t supposed to trap machines in place. And robots are always separated from arena hazards that aren’t the pit in order to see if they’re properly immobile or just stuck where they shouldn’t be. That’s a rule.
@@jamesmitchell8922 What? It _was_ like that. That was another instance of it being unclear whether Razer was properly immobile or just stuck where it shouldn’t have been, hence Dead Metal pushing it off the grille. Then Razer self-righted and outdid Behemoth’s work. Again, inferior robots like Abaddon and Death Warmed Up (the latter two competed once, lost and never returned) were separated from the flame grille for the same reason in that same series, not just Razer.
Razer vs Firestorm is one of the most embarrassing examples of bias in the series. Not because of the decision but because Firestorm pushed Razer into the CPZ several times and the house robots just stood there doing nothing to the robot. Had it been the other way they would have been all over Firestorm. Easily the worst thing about Robot Wars was how inconsistent the activity of the house robots was.
You’re wrong there. I just watched the battle back, and the House Robots WERE treating both intruders equally. Sergeant Bash and Shunt were both pressing on Razer; Shunt even blatantly struck it with his axe! Besides, the House Robots were never there to play fair, and they didn’t have to attack if they didn’t wish it.
Me: trips and falls into Derek Rose Omg I am so sorry I just- Stands up, slips again, takes down Dave Rose I AM JUST TOO LEFT FEET TODAY WOW Stands up, tackles Ken Rose HAHA WHO POLISHED THE FLOOR IN HERE YIKES
Yeah. The final of the Grand final was weak. Razer was in control of the final. Bigger Brother didn't absolutely nothing. Their performance is whack. I mean throughout Bigger Brother's journey, they were performing brilliantly, especially in the battles against Chaos 2 and Hypno-Disc. But the final of the grand final of the 5th wars is whack. and that's why is not on the top 15 battles of the 5th wars.
I think hypno-disc going down the pit was entirely circumstantial. The damage they caused to Bigger Brother was more than enough to make them the winner. Bigger Brother was destroyed, so there was no point in letting that scrap heap through.
The fact Bigger Brother couldn't mount any noticeable offense against Razer was Team Big Brother's own problem. They wouldn't have even been in that battle if the pit wasn't open when facing Hypno-Disc in the previous battle.
Just downright depressing Bigger Brother didn't take it. Damn shame, especially after that amazing performance against Hypno-Disc. I can't say Razer didn't deserve that victory, but I also can't say I was rooting for them either. What a brilliant performance, and what a brilliant final overall.
As impressive as Bigger Brother was to survive long enough to push Hypno-Disc into the pit, remember that anyone with a decent enough robot can push another down the pit even if they've been owned throughout prior. And Bigger Brother was also lucky that Hypno-Disc didn't just stay away from that end of the arena. I see nothing depressing about a lesser-but-lucky machine not being able to use that same tactic twice to cheaply take the UK Championship - I find it satisfying that Razer finally won it after several moments of outrageously bad luck, and by being better in combat, which Bigger Brother was not.
Whether you're a fan of the robot and/or its team or not is irrelevant. Razer was the best in combat, it didn't cheat to get there, and that's the main point.
Carbide is aprox 12 years in the future mate from this point. It should be able to beat these. The fact that you could still consider these robots competitive in the modern scene stands as testament to how far ahead of their time they were.
You don't seem to understand that entertainment isn't the show's primary purpose. Winning the competition is, which Razer (not "Razor" - it's ridiculous how many people mispell it when there are FIVE keys between the E and O keys) succeeded at objectively and fairly. You want something where the action prioritises entertainment? Watch professional wrestling, not a real-life combat display.
and the judges couldnt give it to razer quick enough lol. despite being slammed into the wall about 500 times, being stuck on the wall and not being able to get out etc etc. they dont half insult the viewers. no idea why they allowed tv to take this back when it was much better and fairer off air.
No viewers were being insulted here - your argument's just nothing but wrongful bias and exaggerations, which is your problem. Firstly, it wasn't anywhere near 500 times that Firestorm pushed (not "slammed") Razer, and it wasn't enough to outdo the damage Razer inflicted on Firestorm. And secondly, Razer's predicament with the angle grinder does not constitute an immobilisation, because the rules state that the arena hazards that aren't the pit are not supposed to trap robots in place. That applied with ALL robots, not just Razer. If those hazards cause _damage_ that disables a robot, that's one thing, but it still needs to be separated first to see if that's the case. But Razer kept fighting on when it was freed, so there.
the refbot moving razer off the wall wasnt allowed surely? the ref should have counted them out,, other robots stuck on that wall trap werent allowed to be removed ffs. money wins i n tv bullshit mind.
Actually, you're wrong. Robots who got stuck on arena hazards, and yes, that includes the grinders, were frequently freed. Remember Behemoth from Extreme 1? Or when Abaddon or Death Warmed Up (which are both terrible robots so the bias card is out of play) were freed from the flame pit after they got stuck?
I will always be disappointed that we never got a Hypno-disc/Razer fight. But such persistence from Bigger Brother cannot go without reward
I would have paid extra to see Hypno-Disc vs Razer.
I've said it since that battle "Bigger Brother....ULTOR! You could have paid it forward!"
CHaos 2 vs Wild Thing, best RB battle of all time.
Series 6 was good as well if you discount the last fight.
@@Mitjitsu Still crying?
Let's just say this was the best grand final of the classic series, with three closely fought battles and one inevitable winner.
'Inevitable' winner? That thing, really?
Watching this as a kid I never thought about how humble the competitors were. True sportsmanship!
Awesome performance by bigger brother and firestorm.... Salute
Sam Giles looks like black leather to me. His hair is velvet though lol
HIs coat was polyurethane.
Razer vs Firestorm: The best fight I have ever seen
Little ellie: did you beat hypno-disc?
Bigger Brother: yes
Little Ellie: what did it cost?
Bigger brother: everything
Not gona lie i love that before and after shot of firestorm a true warior bashed smashed torn and shreaded but still figting love it thats how a true war machine should look each one of those scratches and dents represent how far they went
What an episode! These have to be some of the best fights in the show's history!
Hypno-Disc and Razer must be the two most destructive robots on Robot Wars, I would've loved to see them fight.
I love this show
I feel like all 4 bots here deserve to have won at least one major championship, idk how firestorm and bigger brother were still running after all that damage from hypnodisc and razer over the finals...
I may not be a fan of it but I know plenty of people are and after the horrendous luck they'd had in prior series they certainly deserved a title at some point and here they got one... if only I could say the same for Firestorm :P
Thanks to NJGW for uploading this series and allowing me to relive the fond memories I had of watching it as a kid.
Why you write always a lot? Who cares ?
What a final that was. Best ever. Poor kids beaten in the end but how good were they against hypnodisc.
i fucking love the british teams, all so nice and helpful to one another.
So why they didn't help Firestorm when got stuck in the Angle Grinder against Storm II?
@@TheKingFlurry That took place 2-3 years later. As for why, I have no idea. Mentorn weren't known for consistency.
@@TheKingFlurry What are you talking about? Firestorm wasn't stuck on any of the angle grinders in that battle. It drove underneath one at one point but quickly got back out.
20:49 the inspecting robots for damage proved to be the end of firestorm 3's grand title dreams
Same thing with Hypnodisc in many fights. Like when they met Wild thing and Behemouth.
That doesn't make any sense.
there's no conspiracy. they wanted the best competitors (i.e. grand finalists) to fight each other if they were able.
I would have never thought Bigger Brother would beat Hypno-Disc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bigger brother and hypnodisc fight was the best in robot wars history, bigger brother should have been given the championship on that battle alone
To think.. we could have had a Razer vs Hypnodisc final.
I look at these new series ,and this is still the robot i want to return is hypnodisc
Razer vs hypnodisc would have been a peak battle
28:54 this proves that the robot wars uk grand championship is robot battling's main event
I’m convinced that FireStorm III was a zombie bot. It got absolutely trashed in Series 5 yet it still kept going
Best episode of Robot Wars in my opinion. Beats any of the reboot heats too.
Notice the vast difference between series 3 and 5? I dunno if the producers raised their requirements or the participants did it on their own hook.
Three really good fights and a really underwhelming final
Well, you can't expect any battle to be tense and entertaining just because you want it to be. The objective is to win, which Razer did objectively and fairly, and that's all that matters. If something entertaining happens during, wonderful. If not, that's just what real-life competition is. It's not like with professional wrestling.
@@ryanodonovan9497 Nah, it was shit. Razer asked the production team to keep them away from Hypnodisc so not really fairly either.
"not including times they broke down and Tornado's cage which, while inventive and clever and I praise them for that, I don't rate"
Keep crying, lgbtqtrd.
In every battle vs heavy damage bots like Razer, Pussycat or HypnoDisc i would open the pit as a first thing
The house robots for Razer vs Firestorm 3 are actually Shunt and Sgt. Bash. Matilda is not there.
13:30 Sounds like JP was tearing up....
If u look back at hypno disc and firestorm pause right before hypno disc went down 1st
THE ROBOTEER WE NEED YOU WITH YOUR INSIGHTFUL, AWESOME AND REALLY AGREEEABLE REVIEWS. Also I wanna hear your take on the hypno vs bigger brother fight :o
TFW you've officially lost the comments war. :(
WAITNO YOU'RE GOOD TOO! The roboteer is the first name that came to me and I am really tired, sorry man! Please, gimme all you got!
Thanks dude :D
Added my opinions now! :D
2 best battles in round 1 of the grand final
"3 tonnes of crushfac, crushability factor"
Best grand final ever.
That Hypno-disc upset is the biggest in Robot Wars (well, maybe the winner of Series 7).
So excited for this upload 😁
The Best Design Award for Series 5 is the one trophy of Razer's I don't agree with the robot even being in contention for, much less winning. I agree with Razer winning it in Series 2 when it was new and innovative, and again in Series 3 when it was improved with the unique srimech, but by Series 5 nothing more was new. Razer wasn't even nominated for the award in Series 4, so why was it nominated here?
Because Gemini apparently.
Bigger Brother legit earned that win. Tougher than it looked and refused to admit defeat.
Question: if the Series 5 Hypno-Disc and Firestorm 3 had a battle where both were 100% and no one-hit knockout occurred, who would actually win? Also, shame Barber-Ous and Crushtacean did not receive nominations for Best Original Entry.
Give Crushtacean another year....;-)
Thanks. Have to admit, the Robot Wars Awards was one of the most confusing segments in each series, because as you have mentioned, some of the nominations were outdated or made no sense at all (S3 being nominated for Most Promising Newcomer, for example).
Y'know, sometimes I think it'd be more fun if they got their nominated robots, then had them fight each other.
They would have been the one to finally rip apart Razer
Plus Razer was immobilized against Firestorm and House robots saved him
Had hypno disc took on razer in the final.your so right razer would have been destroyed and ripped to pieces by hypnodisc.
As good as Chaos 2 was and as much damage Hypnodisc could do the brutality of Razer was insane
What was wrong with Hypno Disc at 13:25?
Bigger brother goat!
Sure, damage can be outdone in other ways if done greatly enough, but it wasn't enough for Firestorm here.
damn, missed out on a great rematch chance
this is hypno disc's 1st and only 3rd place playoff battle
you are correct, man.
Why they didnt play 3rd place match in Series 4?
because both robots were too damaged from their previous battles and had to withdraw
Bigger brother - good robot but suspect driving in the finals
Finally the final is there!
Little GIrl "Grand FInal... Aight". Cool af.
Stupid idea wtf she went from hsving usless saw to an actually destructive weapon
@@WizardofTruth And she was one-shoting everyone... a bit unfair
Hypno Disc vs Bigger Brother was a lot less one sided than I remember
Wonder how much was genuine delight and how much was dubbed over a la Typhoon 2/Storm 2
I'm convinced Firestorm vs Razer happened five times putting it up there with the other great rivalries of RW, but seems it only happened three times.
33:54 Surprised you didn't make that face Vinnie Blood pulls into the video thumbnail
37:47 Is that... Razer... RELEASING A ROBOT FOR THE 30SEC PIN RULE? I never thought I'd see the day. :D
39:15 Props to Ian stopping Joe getting tangled up in the flipper release cable.
"Remind me of the ruling, wasn't Refbot only meant to free robots trapped by themselves rather than if they'd been pushed there by the opponent?"
I don't think so.
Gregory Atkin don't forget for "let the worst robot win" you need to have Destruct-A-Bubble
The biggest tragedy is that only one of these 4 legendary bots got a championship.
how the fuck did razer never end up in the pit against firestorm they are so lucky. then the grand final they face a disabled robot...
I think a better question is - how can you call Bigger Brother “disabled”? Don’t you think you’re exaggerating a bit too much when it was clearly functional and battle-worthy? It just couldn’t slot its flipper underneath Razer. That’s just an example of bad luck.
It was a real pyrrhic victory for Bigger Brother wasn't it?
Razer and Hypno-Disc was a fight everyone wanted to see, but Bigger Brother had other plans.
Despite being two of the most destructive robots we've ever seen, neither of them could stop Bigger Brother.
I still hate the moment where bigger brother pitted hypnodisc hypnodisc vs razer would have been the dream final we never saw unfortantly
It was the ultimate underdog story.
Hypno disc opened the pit witch they opened was funny
Why did Razer get through? They drove into the pit fighting the girls.
Uh - hello? Do you think Razer would’ve been let through following that botch if Widow’s Revenge wasn’t already IMMOBILISED AND COUNTED OUT?! You don’t even need to watch the battle in full - it’s just basic logic. 🙄
What is everyone’s fave robot wars robot?
Mine is wheelie big cheese
razor
^ Those 2 are the GOATS chaos 2 and Hypno are honorable mentions of mine.
Epic
Razer was stuck on the angle grinders for a moment until Bash freed it.
Yes, because the angle grinders aren’t supposed to trap machines in place. And robots are always separated from arena hazards that aren’t the pit in order to see if they’re properly immobile or just stuck where they shouldn’t be. That’s a rule.
@@ryanodonovan9497 Not like when Razer could not self-right on the flame pit in the grand final of the First World Championship.
@@ryanodonovan9497 That's what I mean.
Is it cheating to tickle the other robotteers during the fight

Bigger Brother did an awesome job through whole Series 5, but in final driving was really bad
Tbf, their robot had literally just been ripped to absolute shreds and still managed to hang on. It's a miracle they were even functional.
I think hypno-disc going down the pit was entirely circumstantial. The damage they caused to Bigger Brother was more than enough to make them the winner. Bigger Brother was destroyed, so there was no point in letting that scrap heap through.
Razer easy win in finals???
Honestly, I wish Razer hadn't won. Not a fan of them, personally and I'd have much preferred to see any of the other finalists win instead
Whether you're a fan of the robot and/or its team or not is irrelevant. Razer was the best in combat, it didn't cheat to get there, and that's the main point.
Ellie of team Bigger Brother is bloody adorable.
So where is carbide?? It could have beaten most of these robots!!
Carbide is aprox 12 years in the future mate from this point. It should be able to beat these. The fact that you could still consider these robots competitive in the modern scene stands as testament to how far ahead of their time they were.
Tbf Razer is timeless, all they have to do is keep it modernised to meet the top competitive standards.
I'm sorry, but I don't like machines such as Razor. Yer, they're effective, but not exciting.
The judges clearly spent a lot of time making the decision. Did you even watch the video?
@@killdozer7792 so much so that @ 20:49 they inspect for damage from both robots
