  • Although I’ve slayed the dragon many times on my Arcade 1up Dragon’s Lair arcade game, and achieved the highest score possible of 373,879 (3 Dirks on easy setting), I’ve never accomplished that with NO unnecessary sword or stick inputs…until now!

Played this game back in 1983. 2 quarters per game and I spent almost $10 in a few weeks. We used to play it on our work break outside the grocery store in a small gaming room. How I learned to win was I watched others play and saw how they advanced, and saw how a few won. When it was my turn to finally win I had other kids around watching my moves. Great memories.

I won back when I was a kid in high school. I'd never made it to the last scene so I had no idea what to do. All of a sudden some guy standing next to me told me what to do. I won the game and turned around and there were a ton of people who were watching me play that I didn't know were there. I looked to my side to see who had been helping me, but there was no one there. It was a very interesting experience.

Everything you said in the intro is me :) I turn 54 this year and the last time I was able to finish the game was maybe 1985 or 1986 and never looked at my score, my goal was just to beat the dragon. I could finish it at any difficulty level.. This video in spired me to try finishing it again. PS: My favourite version on the Nintendo Switch the restored video quality is amazing.

Hi Tom. That brings back memories! That's the same trick my brother used back in the 1980s to always get the high score! He would let the knight die intentionally near the end to score extra points. My brother played Dragon's Lair while I stood beside him playing Space Ace! Thanks for sharing!

This game really drew a crowd upon its arcade release in the UK. One was installed in the lower ground floor of ‘Oasis’ in Birmingham city centre. I may be wrong, but I recall that the game could be cheated and skipped forward in some way by giving the cabinet a well-timed shove. Thanks for uploading this, it reminds me of happy times and a mis-spent youth. 😊

Back in my arcade days I played that game so much I started trying to beat it blindfolded. Almost every room started with a sound cue so it was just a matter of recognizing the room by sound and then memorizing the timing of the move list. Some rooms required an almost simultaneous action with the first sound cue, which made it very difficult, but still possible.
Of course, many of the mirrored rooms you simply had to guess whether your first move was left or right. And *that* was what made it impossible without some luck.
I want to say that about 3/4 of the game could be beaten blindfolded, but my memory is foggy. Fun to watch the game play again after all these years. Thanks!

Long story short... I had the opportunity to choose my own home arcade game in 1987 (I was 16ys old). It came down to Dragon's Lair or the original Star Wars. I was a massive Star Wars fan and had literally had every Star Wars figurine and playset. My parents were told the Dragon's Lair was going to be very expensive to repair if anything ever went wrong. I'm 52 years old now and the Star Wars arcade game still sits in my living room. Blue dot in the middle of the screen but the audio still works. In hindsight, no regrets. I have all 10 of the top scorers on this machine and I have no doubts that had I got Dragon Lair it would not have lasted as long as the Star Wars did.

I think completing Space Ace is harder. This cabinet comes with Space Ace too so I’ll try to finish it too.

I remember Space Ace being a lot more forgiving with the input controls! It also had extra scenes with the hard difficulty, I only completed it on normal

In 1983 or 84 Alhambra CA my friend Ron and I spent many a quarter learning the game. We used to test each other at home on each screen solution LRSUD or whatever. Eventually, at the bowling alley on Valley, he finished the game without dying, and I did it with one life lost. The greatest achievement of my life!!

Very nice! I'm 53 and love it.
I think I missed the scene where dirk jumps through the metal teeth and meets the lava men. Idk.
Dragons lair and Space Ace are available on blue ray. Best quality and gameplayabilty I have found closest to the true arcade cab. Have them both on Sega CD.
    Cheers.

Never got a perfect game, but sure remember the first time I killed the dragon! 1984 at an arcade called Aladdin's Castle in the Phoenix Village Mall in Fort Smith, AR. Two good friends (Kelly and Jeff) were all rotating taking turns to see who could get through it, good times. Thanks for the memory Tom!

I remember being able to go through the entire game on my first man, getting all the way to the final sword swing and then dying. I would repeat that over and over till my final man and then end the game. It was maxing out the score as far as I knew. I wish I knew what the score was but it's been like 40 years ago.

    • @tomball3611
      @tomball3611  6 місяців тому +1

Yeah, I don't know what my max score back in the day was either. The max possible score would've been dependent on the difficulty level and number of Dirks you had at the time. The website "The Dragon's Lair Project" is the ultimate resource to learn anything Dragon's Lair related, including max possible scores and breakdown of score by each level. Here's the link: www.dragons-lair-project.com/games/pages/dl.asp

I played DL so much, that i could slay the dragon while facing away from the cabinet (hands behind my back), I would have others come up and ask me to move so that they could play, the look on their face when i told them that thay would have to wait until i was done, was priceless.

I use to do this method back in '83 at the local 7-11 in Phoenix. I believe that machine gave you 5 lives so the end score was in the 425,000 - 450,000 range... It's been so long I can't remember the exact number. After beating the game every time, the video game vending company came and changed out the chips on the motherboard, making the timing different in the game, so we had to spend money to learn it all over again!
