Washington Island: Part IV - The Last Fisherman
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 жов 2020
- In 1970 there were nine fishing tugs operating out of Jackson Harbor on Washington Island. Today, there is only one. This 'Behind The Door' episode chronicles a day of setting nets off Rock Island aboard the See Diver with the inimitable Ken Koyen, the last in a long line of commercial fisherman on the island. Ken's half century of dedication to the tradition is delivered with a unique mariner's wit and wisdom. music by epidemicsound.com

I hope you appreciate it all more as experiencing the place than just picture material. I see you had the chance to meet these good people and experience a part of their everyday life. Damn good people...
OMG, I was there a week ago, I stepped into that boat, did some photos of the interior and just now discovered this video here and got to know the history of it. Thank you!
Another little bit of great history....the soul of America! I hope every one who views these appreciate the historic value of the videos! Thanks Kevin! 🥰👍🏼👏🏼
Thank you, Mary. I don't know that everyone does. But its heartening to know some do, like you!
Loved the videos about the island and all the videos about door country so much thanks for doing what your doing and by the way you were fishing with very very very close family friend like I call him uncle Kenny. A lot of my family is from door county mainly Washington island so it means a lot seeing you show people the real side of living up there
He's a remarkable guy. Thanks for your gracious comments.
@@KODOPhoto I just saw your milky was video also and I have some really good pictures of the northern light and Milky Way at the same time up on the island
Not sure where Washington Island is but love your video and every time I watch them I miss home more and more I remember seeing boats like that one in Round Lake never knew they were fishing boats.
Thanks, Jeff. I hope they are fond memories.
Gummy bears? We’re they for bait? 😂
Very interesting video about commercial fishing. Would like to know more details. Where is he fishing? For how long? How many feet of net? How many fish and what type does he catch?
Thanks, Jim! I tried to include as many details as I could.
Where is he fishing? Out of respect for Ken, I didn't want to reveal his exact locations, but references can be found throughout; more specifically at minute: 5:18, and 10:38, with additional clues at 11:32, 12:20, 15:40, and 15:50.
For how long? 18:43 and 21:10. It's also mentioned in the video description above.
How many feet of net? Mentioned at 6:20. Ken also explains how many nets per box and how many boxes per set, and how many sets he was putting down that evening. Also, the cost of the nets are discussed at 19:14.
How many fish and what type does he catch? He mentions what a typical haul is for this time of year (late June) at 13:32. What did he catch on this set and how many? 23:27. Stay tuned! More is revealed in context in next week's episode "The Lift". Thanks for watching!
