I can only say that I love these videos... and the narration. I am a "boat nerd" from Virginia and my time of traveling is long gone, so these videos put mean the center of all the action. Thank you.
Enjoyed them all. When the Joe Block came in backwards, it reminded me of when I parked my kayak on top of the rocks awash on Dunlap reef , got out and walked on the reef. Took a photo of the rocks exposed. The first time the water has been that low in years. It makes you appreciate how tight the space the tugs have to work to move ships at FBS. If you see a yellow/green or blk/green sea kayak flying thru the ship canal out to Lake Michigan-that's me. Best wishes for your trip. can't wait to see photos
Hi Kevin. Thanks for another lovely video. Great news about Cailìn... I hope she makes a full recovery. Looking forward to getting my hands on your book, my birthday is in July so I'm gonna start dropping hints to my Wife soon. Stay safe. Paul . Ireland 🇮🇪
Keep the videos coming, another great series on winter layup. I am looking forward to your Alaska trip videos, smooth sailing on this photo outing. Also, good to hear things are looking better for your wife. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to the release of your book. See you down the trail.
Kevin....how's the weather up there? Chicagoland's still cold and snowy. When are the Lakers due out of their layups? And any news on the trip to Alaska? Wondering if the Ryerson is going to make a comeback? I need some plans for a 1/87 scale build of the Joseph L. Block. Any ideas? I've checked all the usual places. But alas, I guess Fincantieri plays them close to the vest. Any pull with the former capt. Maybe he has an idea. If not, then back to the drawing board, derived from photos. Good Day!
Hi Ron. Weather is cold and snowy lately. Lakers are prepping and fitting-out. The first are expected to leave the end of next week (March 23-24). Just back from Alaska. I haven't even had a chance to download my photos and videos yet. Soon. There have been other modelers who have built scale replicas of the Block. Have you tried reaching out to any of them on FB?
Loved this series. Thanks for taking us on your journey to photograph these ships. My girlfriend and I love watching your videos! I'm in Western Wisconsin, so I don't get to see lake freighters, only the barges of the Mississippi. Beautiful country. Thanks again!
Hey Kevin! You’re vídeos and photos are simply amazing. Absolutely love your work. I wanted to ask you for one thing though. Do you think you can make an episode or before you take a shot in an episode explain things like how you selected what lens to use or what setting etc. I’m new to photography and although my current subjects ( fish in an aquarium) are a far cry from what you film, I am enjoying photography and want to try to capture other things. Your advice would be invaluable. Keep up the great work!!
Kevin, I really enjoyed this video. Not only the shipping action, but it brought back awesome memories for when I visited Sturgeon Bay several years ago. Man I love that area! As an advanced amatuer astronomer, I anxiously await your upcoming SD/AK road trip. And I'm so happy your wife is going well. So in conclusion, thanks Kevin for yet another excellent video.
Very good video, Kevin . You mentioned your short list. Visiting the door area is on my list. I have planned a trip around Duluth ,Mn and then to the door peninsula And maybe taking the ferry across lake Michigan and up to the soo locks. Again I really enjoy your videos, living in the western corn belt we never see those big ships. I,m glad your wife is well, I did not hear of this until this video. I would hope to meet you someday if I get my trip to the door area, God Bless you and your family . Thanks Kevin.
Can’t wait to see the pics from the road trip. Have to be honest I am not a big book reader however I am pumped and look forward to purchasing your book soon.
Just found your channel and I love it. Keep up the great work. You should come down to Cleveland and watch some of these boats go up the Cuyahoga to the steel mill.
Somehow this is the first time I've come across your channel, Kevin, and I love the footage! I like the way you combine different footage. I'm in Chicago and don't get up to Door County as much as I'd like but I'm enjoying this video and subbed you to see more. Keep up the great work!
Your winter layup series was the next best thing to being there, it was fantastic and fun to watch. Safe travels to Fairbanks, look forward to seeing those videos. You know I am anxiously awaiting your book! Been considering magnetic filters myself. I know you’re not a gear channel but am curious to know your thoughts.
Kevin, in the book which we're all anticipating, has your wonderful photography. Is it possible to include maybe some drawings? Say like something that Russ passed on to you? Yes, a favorite of mine is the Joseph L. Block, and I've been trying to get plans for a while now. Modelers look for these types of things, you know. 😉
@Kevin O'Donnell I just recently tried to get dimensions drawings for the Joseph L. Block. For modeling purposes. All the usual places, historical & museums. But, I guess Bay Shipbuilders, hold their cards close to the vest, no luck. Would also, make a nice wall hanging too. If you make it to Alaska, are you going for a ride on the Yukon, White Pass Railway? Looks like it would be a good photo-op.
The Indiana Harbor stuff, just run it with some music and commentary. Some radio cuts and real sound dubs. You have the video, do it when time permits. We like the tugs too! And.....Have a nice journey to Alaska! Happy Trails....Kevin!
Another beautiful video!! We’re amateur astronomers 🔭, and somehow we got into watching Duluth harbor/boats, and then to watching you!! Can’t wait for your book, and your videos to come of Alaska and the auroras. Best wishes to you and your wife, so glad she’s doing well!! ❤️🤗
I saw Ray and Peggy a couple of weeks ago. They are certainly enjoying retirement. Those two never slow down! I believe they are on their way to California now.
Kevin - I am thoroughly enjoying your videos, especially the laker editions. I am fortunate living on the Western NY / Canadian border. American Steamship Corp is HQ’d here, and Algoma Central is just up the road, in St. Catherines Ontario, where 3 or 4 of their boats are in winter layup. The Welland Canal, and locks, which connects Lakes Erie and Ontario is also a short drive away. Lots of lake and ocean-going traffic during the shipping season. You have gotten me dry interested in revisiting photography, but I need to upgrade my ancient Canon SLR to one of their newer digital offerings - either a T7 or an M50. Would really appreciate your advice!
That's a lovely area of the country, Don. Can't go wrong with either camera. I use the M50 to shoot all my vlogs and most of my videos. The entire industry is moving away from DSLR. Mirrorless is the future. I'm mulling retiring my Canon 5D Mark IV in favor of a Canon R5 but I can't bear to part with my L Series lenses!
My husband and I enjoy watching your videos! We love the Sturgeon Bay area but also spend time on the North Shore. Do you have any published material one could purchase?
Wonderful video once again. I can't emphasize how much I enjoy these videos. I don't know if you have done this before, but how about a series on those wonderful tugs! Those guys maneuver those little powerhouses like they were land vehicles. The captains of those little boats are so masterful in how they move those graceful beasts of the lakes. Have a blessed weekend!
Wow some fantastic editing once again! I especially loved the musical interlude you put in mid video, which would put any professional broadcaster to shame 👏👏. Any chance you could tell me what the music was?
I subscribe to a license-free music content site that I use for my videos called epidemicsound.com The name of the tune used in the Indiana Harbor / Tug segment is "Leather Feather" by Lennon Hutton. The name of the tune used in the Joseph Block segment is "Hilltop Highway" by Martin Klemm.

Always look forward to your work Kevin, I am very interested in your book as well.
Wonderful
We are looking forward to the release of your book ... good luck on your upcoming Alaska trip.
Thanks so much!
I enjoyed the video. I miss my winters in DC. Making the trip to hopefully see the winter fleet depart.
Thank you, Grant. Boats should start leaving March 24th give or take. I hope you can make it up!
Any updates on when the ships will be leaving?
Love to watch the boats here in Ashtabula, Ohio. Think it’s time for the fleet to look at some fresh paint.
