  • 🇹🇯 Five times I applied for a Tajikistan visa and five times I was rejected without reason. Then someone told me they knew a way to 'cheat' the system and so despite the government seemingly not wanting me I managed to get in. Join me in our 13th former-Soviet republic as we see what exactly it was the Tajik government were trying to stop me from seeing...

Cheers to ‪@BackpackerBen‬ for joining me and Kat. And wide armed Joe for helping me with the visa.

You met a lot of very kind people in Tajikistan, they invited you into their homes and offered you tea and bread, we could all learn a lesson in kindness and hospitality from these people, the doctor earns $100 per month but still is happy to share what he has, their humanity is admirable ❤️🙏

Tajikistan and Central Asia as a whole is a very underrated place. It’s one of the best places to visit, Tajikistan has the famous Pamir highway, which is about 1600KM of mountain roads with breathtaking views going up to 5000metres of altitude. I remember being on there I met so many people who were biking it, and one of them was a Brit from Sheffield, on his mountain bike in the Pamir highway. Crazy. It’s a beautiful place, very cheap and a lot of history, also a lot of beautiful nature and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see the Marco Polo goats. A wild mountain goat that’s as big as bear. Thanks for the content Ben!

The Chinese is busy with widening and paving the Pamir Highway. Supposed to be finished at the end of 2025. So if you want gravel mountain roads. You will need to take the Wakgan Valley route.

31:40 actually alexander's army has long been blamed for the phenomenon of european phenotypes in central asia, but genetic research has shown there is no greek ancestry in the region at all - it is actually because multiple ancient european peoples inhabited the region, especially the andronovo culture, who were the same people to bring indo-european languages to india, hence northern indians being lighter than southern indians, and who also gave rise to the scythians, who were described as having blonde and red hair by ancient greeks and persians - strabo compares their appearance to the germans. more east asian features were brought to central asia by the turks and mongols in the last 2 thousand years, but the european features remain. (after all, who stereotypes greeks as being particularly blonde haired?) just thought someone might be interested!

Ben, if you head to small towns in China, you'll still find architecture from 50s,60s,70s,80s that were heavily influced by the USSR. Also worth travelling to the boarder of China and North Korea, hop on a speed boat and they'll take you into North Korean waters. It's also facinating to see Chinese and North Korean boats doing trades (smuggling) on the river.
