What I really like about PCA DIY videos is that they're 'one take' and not pre-arranged like so many videos on YT. Rob reminds me of my late Uncle John back in Ireland. He was a superb funny and generous guy but not without letting out the odd expletive on the family farm working on David Brown tractors. Keep up great work PCA. ☘️🔧

Love the warning about the cracked oil fill tube. “Installing a new one is not a straightforward job” is the understatement of the video 🤣

Amazing video, guys. Had mine done a while back by a dealer. I caught it just as the bearing was getting noisy. Pretty costly, so DIYing it would save a pile, but your video makes it pretty clear, it's not a job for everybody. I loved how realistic it was. Thanks, again!!

I replaced my 03" 996 4s a few years ago. What a PITA to say the least. Need small hands, flexible wrenches and more patience than one person should have. I replaced the whole thermostat housing and it was came with a lower temp thermostat installed already, lifetime guaranteed. Only a few dollars than a new thermostat alone, but works perfect and runs much cooler. What a bonus! I did the repair in shifts, a hour or two here or there, no marathon have to get it done today. Quite a few hours for sure, skinned knuckles, etc. BUT no leaks or errors and way cheaper than a dealer. Good luck!!

This is one of those "Deceptive DIY" jobs. You open the lid and go "yeah I can do that, no problem" and then once you start working you discover it's a little more difficult than what some of the guides allude to. Glad to hear an honest account of how long it took!
Agree fully with the final sentiments: Plan on it taking longer than expected, and accept there may be unforeseen issues. In my case the water pump gasket arrived with one of the tabs folded in half (requiring waiting for a replacement), and I could NOT get the plastic tube to move sufficiently out of the way. Maybe it's a .2 Tiptronic thing? Regardless, it meant lots of fiddling to get the water pump in/out.

I did mine (99C2) about 10 years ago. I did it in the garage on the floor, but it seemed easier to do than this video showed. The one thing I remember though is kissing my bumper on and off for 5 hours, alot of coffee breaks and working blind. Thanks for the video guys.

Thanks for watching! This was indeed challenging. Damon replaced the water pump (and a bunch of other things) on his Cayman last winter using Quickjacks and knew enough to help Rob complete this project (also, Pelican Parts guides are a valuable resource). But a few things went wrong here, which extended this job by several hours. The pro tips seen in the video should also help speed things along; wish we'd known about them before we started!

I bought a 99 recently and records show the last water pump was replaced in 2017@56k miles. It’s now ‘23@85k miles. Do you think it’s recommended to replace it again?

Great video - I'd like to see more on simple DIY repairs. Still looks like something I'd let a mechanic do - from capturing the fluids, being responsible for a broken oil filler line, and doing a vacuum fill. Here's one more pro tip - keep the screw driver pointed away from your eyes (see the first minute).

Holding out for the “unedited” version that includes all of Rob’s cursing and swearing! The broken oil filler tube scene must be priceless. 😂
Also, I struggle to believe Damon wasn’t injured filming this episode either from a chemical spill, thrown tool, or aforementioned cursing. 😜😂
In all honesty, you lost me with Vu’s recommended tool list. 😳
I’m fairly handy around the house and my cars, but needing a transmission or floor jack to support the motor crosses a line for me. 😜
    Seriously, great video!
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Rob’s cursing was epic. We had just spoken about what a pain it was to replace that tube. It was at that pint it became more than a one day project.

Damon says there was over an hour of footage, so take what you will from that and the cursing that went on :) And he did cut his finger pretty badly, should have been wearing gloves when yanking on a metal water pump seal... Thanks for watching!

Favorite/memorable lines: "Here goes nothing." "uniquely German-looking hose." "sliced my finger on something...not sure what." That is some bandage on Damon's middle finger! Tetanus shot? Sass EVEN kept his fancy chrono w/deployant clasp on while doing this...gutsy. :)

Good DIY. I did the pump/thermostat on my 997 Turbo recently. It wasn't too bad.

Did this today a very easy 3ish hour job spilled very little coolant due to your tip to drain the main plug beforehand.

Was there any play in the bearing of the Waterpump? In my 02 4S was a lot of play, the Coolant was leaking out, and I lost most of the Blades of the Impeller..

    • @PorscheClubofAmerica
      @PorscheClubofAmerica  Рік тому

Yes, the bearing had a good amount of play but fortunately the impellers did not break.

How much coolant comes out of the car when you drain it? Or in other words, how many buckets were needed?

Quite clumsy guys but always nice to watch 😅 and with the corrosion inside , one can only assume a wrong/old coolant used for years🤔… not to mention the wrong hose clamp used…🤷‍♂️
