Laura, I found this older video when looking for an easy caftan tutorial. As usual, your video is easy to follow, yet kicks it up a notch with your usual flare and professional touches! Thank you so much.
You have no idea how much I appreciate your video! As soon as I come home I change into my caftans and I have been struggling with the neck line for so many years. Your pattern is a life saver because it is the neck I like and you explain it so easy!!! Please keep giving us the gift of your videos and expertise as often as you can. I am a long time follower and you are my favorite teacher!!!
I have never been comfortable sewing clothing, but this tutorial is one I feel I could do! Thanks again for helping us to feel like we can be successful at these projects- you a wonderful teacher.
Excellent Laura! Thank you! I have two that were given to me as gifts over 10 years ago and are pretty worn out. They are so comfortable for around the house. I had thought about making some new ones for me but never got around to it. You showing that the sides would be longer once I put my arms down was something I had not realized so now I can see the adjustments I need to make. You are so appreciated by all of us!
Thank you so much for posting this!!! I tried to do a kaftan today by myself and I ended up crying in my room and with alot of fabric ruined 🥺. Tomorrow I will follow your instructions step by step because I finally found someone who explains every step for dummies like me! I will come back with a feedback after I finish 🙈. Wish me luck!!
I always enjoy your videos. I had a big piece of lightweight cotton that I tie dyed, decided to make a kaftan. I more or less followed your instructions with minor changes. What a fun project!
Hi Laura! This is such a beautiful project for our Embrace double gauze! Your directions and the detail you provide are so thorough! Both of the women's versions are pretty but the bouquet floral print is especially gorgeous! And, the little whale print in the girls cooler is so cute! THANKS for a fabulous sewing tutorial!
Am sooo thankful, to have found your channel...it's been years since have sewn anything but 'hand mending', and didn't even know there was double gauze! Now will be able to sew up, a cool and comfy caftan...many thanks! :) Gretchen Belken
This is the first time that I have watched your channel. I just wanted to say you have an excellent voice, and I could hear you reading books. I was initially interested in the sewing, but I really enjoyed your voice inflections and storytelling.
,I just love them. You gave the description so perfectly. Enjoyed listening and watching you explain the ins and outs of the outfit. Thank you so much. I may just make one. Blessings to you.
This is exactly what I have been looking for! I didn't know it was called a Caftan. I love the double gauze and wanted to make a loose dress like piece to wear around the house after getting home from a long hot day at work. Thank you so much!
Thankyou so much for this. I made it today and I’m really pleased with it. Here in New Zealand it’s the middle of winter but I’m going to Vietnam in September so it will be perfect there. Also just want to add that I looked at just about all the UA-cam videos for a caftan but this was the only one with a proper facing and finish.
This is wonderful. Thank you so much .I'm going to make this for a Fashion Show /Sale I'm having to raise money for our local Food Bank. This will be the door prize !! love it !!!
Thank you so much for this kaftan DIY/pattern! I absolutely adore kaftans and make them to wear as fashion garments as well. I used Simplicity Sew Simple pattern A1395 ($.97 US). I adjusted the cutting measurements just as you described here so that the sides barely touched my elbows and in doing so, reduced the extra fabric hanging down at the sides. They are so comfortable to wear and I too like adding embellishments to jazz them up.
I would love a suggestion for an Autumn/Winter fabric. I am just now getting brave enough to try this...your explanations and suggestions are amazing!!! You explain "WHY" a certain point and that is what I want to know!!
Thank you so much. I had been looking for sewing without pattern and I also use patterns but if I can't find what I need I use my imagination and asking GOD to help me draft one. Thank you. God bless you.
Wow this is awesome and would make a wonderful pool cover up. So glad you shared and thank you so much for all you do and share. I have really gleaned a lot of information from your tutorials over the last year that I have been watching. Thank you and keep up the awesome work.
Those tops are just fabulous! I would love to make one for myself and my daughter for the beach! You make it look easy so I may just try it! Another great tutorial! I have so many of your projects on my to do list but I'm trying to bang out WIP. I did however make the go and grow bag and your directions were easy and clear, loved making that bag! Thanks again!
It's a cold winter here in Australia( only 13*C today brrrr), but this pattern will be fabulous for summer! If I get sewing now I could make lots as Christmas gifts. Thank you for sharing 😃
Wow, wish I had seen this earlier. I just ordered a beach cover up made like this with lace around the neck. I could have made it for less. Maybe I still will just to have a caftan for after shower-before bed time. Thanks for the great instructions.
Maybe you have deliberately taken link off, but in case you do not know, I, in Australia, have just tried to access the pattern for caftan neckline and three times is is not found? I am not complaining, just informing you shoud you wish to know.Your directions are always so concise I have forwarded link to younger members of circle.
I wanted to leave a separate comment about this caftan: I am planning on making some with a thicker fabric for the winter for around the house.. I have some beautiful dark blue cotton embroidered batik, some soft ret corduroycordurory and fancy-dandy brocade..... The two that I own are nice thin silks and split up the sides to about 6 inches above my knees. I probably won't split these winter caftans. Thank you for the tutorial! Ruth
Love this, I'm always looking for something to cover my bathing suit up with at my kids house. I'm not that skinny as a stick little 25 year old anymore. This would work and the cotton would be cool here in the hot southwest.
Hello, I loved this video and, I guess, because it is six years old, the pattern no longer seems to be available for download. Is there another link I can use? Thank you. The catan is lovely and I love the way you do the neckline.
Thank you for your tutorial, if I want the kaftan to be long to the floor how can I adjust the peaces that will be longuer from the sleeves, they will fall on the floor on each side, Thank you
Hey Laura! I love my cooler! Would love to post a picture but don't see that as an option. This is a great pattern. Very quick and easy. Plus the double gauze cotton is wonderful to wear! I used a purple and white floral like the blue and white one in your example. I'm going to make another with a different print. This may end up being Christmas presents for my family members in Florida. Thank you so much!
Hi, I have been contacting Laura re the pdf download as it’s not available, Laura kindly put it on her UA-cam site two days ago, but the PDF attachment is not there anymore. Would it be possible that you still have that PDF and can email it to me if I give you my email address. Wishful thinking I know I live in hope. Many thanks from Tina
Helen Castoza I love it and looking forward to making one for a friend and one and for her little girl .She just had a car accident and it would be a great gift for them . thanks alot for sharing this with me ,
There are two places where I'm not sure what you mean. At 2:48, "After the fabric's been folded you will have all the raw edges together on one side and the raw edges meeting up along the bottom, and that's going to be the hem." Should that be, "After the fabric's been folded you will have all the 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴 together..." ? Also, at 7:10, "For the sleeves you're going to need a long piece, 2 inches by 24 inches." That means a 2"×24" strip for each sleeve?
Let me begin by saying, I like your tutorials, and watch them frequently. I have watched the "Summer Cooler" one, NUMEROUS times, however for a beginner like me, some things were not explained enough. If you only take a measurement of the shoulder width, how do you determine the width of the garment? Doesn't the width affect the length of the sleeves? How does that connect up with the width of the garment. Wouldn't they be two different measurements? I used the shoulder measurement and my caftan was huge. How do you hem an uneven hem? You commented on the question of the width of the caftan and the fact that the hem would be uneven, but had no suggestions how to measure or mark it. I would appreciated more information, ideas, about how to hem an uneven garment and how to size a caftan. I looked for a hemming video on UA-cam, but couldn't find one. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Sara Primeau
Yes, the length can get long. If you do not like it long you can round the hemline. If you were to stand with your arms like a letter T, it will look like a letter U. You will need to do a rolled hem. I do not have a video for that but I will work on one. Hope this helps:)
Can you demonstrate a nice top simple and if you could do me a pattern as well would be nice I'm a beginner I want to start doing something. How would you cut a top with neck for an adult and chest size 27'' from arm hole to an arm hole in the front.
I was very excited by this video and went to a lot of trouble and expense to source the materials required to make this garment. The measurement you gave for the sleeves is questionable as my sleeve opening goes quite low, leaving me exposed. I'm not sure how to progress now and have left the garment incomplete. I'm very disappointed and wonder if you can give me some direction and advice on how to complete the garment so my satisfaction. I've watched this video many times to ensure I followed your instructions. I have watched many of your videos and enjoy your instruction. This is the first time I've attempted one of your designs and I'm feeling pretty let down by the experience.
I'm sorry to hear that lets see what we can do to fix it. See if you can make the arm opening smaller, just use pins to check. The smaller the wrist hole is made the smaller the opening will be. start by pinning 1" at a time going up from the bottom. Keep in mind that the sleeve in this type of garment is low or you would not be able to move your arms up and down. But it can be made a little tighter. Let me know how that works out for you, Oh and is it a short or long sleeve?
This is just what I've been looking for! When I printed the templates for the neckline, I had to set my printing preference to 100%. When I did, I think it cut off part of it and now I can't get it to match up. Is there a "fix" for this? I REALLY want to make this! P.S. LOVE all your tutorials! Thanks
Mine did the same thing when I printed from my iPad. I opened it in windows and printed it and it was the right size. Make sure the print scale is 100 percent. There is also a lot of information online on how to make it print right correctly on other devices. Good luck.
Just found out about you and Love the things you do, can you give me the link to the video for the sewing machine cover you have in the caftan vidieo. Thanks Gwen UK
I used Rayon. Where Laura sergers down the sides, I turned over and stitched a 5mm hem first. I followed the rest of the instructions just the same, so when when I pressed the side seams open, the raw edges were folded under. I then sewed the seam open so that the raw edges were concealed.

How can I get the neck pattern for the caftan?
Caftans have been around for a very, very long time. Been wearing them for years!

Love your videos and I have followed a few of them.

Hey Laura, I'm wondering how you keep your sewing machine peddle in place. I'm finding mine sliding away.
Great project. Off to the fabric store!
nothing better then a day in the fabric store! have fun
Laura A Coia Do you have a pattern for us late comers?

Explained very well!Thank u for making it easy to understand.

Hi mam hru.thanks mam for such a nice n exact tutorial for making kaftan.
Where do we find the pattern for the neckline facing?
Great video, thank you.😊
I love this. it is very pretty. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching
Are you taking orders ?
I'm very happy when I see your video...thank you 💕
Thanks:)
I just found your page and am so happy! Would it be possible to use cotton fabrics on this pattern?
you sure can, the only thing is it might always need pressing!
Thanks
100% is correct I do not know why it is like that. The point is just a soft point. it is the part under the arm that is the most important.:)
Thank you, Laura! I've learned so much from watching your tutorials. You make the techniques that, to me, seem scary so much more approachable!
Did you say how much fabric you used?
Love this thank you so much for the video great for summer Thank you so much .
Hi Laura, thank you for the tutorial! Where do you find the fabric for this project? Thanks
some quilt shops and most fabric shops
Ach! My neckline pattern printed much smaller than how it looks against your cutting board, which seems to be 17” top to bottom.
Mine did the same thing when I printed from my iPad. I opened it in windows and printed it and it was the right size. Make sure the print scale is 100 percent. There is also a lot of information online on how to make it print right correctly on other devices. Good luck.
Espectacular
Just found out about you and Love the things you do, can you give me the link to the video for the sewing machine cover you have in the caftan vidieo. Thanks Gwen UK
sure can ua-cam.com/video/J0sXFuLNkR4/v-deo.html and welcome:)
Thank you Laura. That's so cute!
thanks and thanks for watching
Thank you so much!! You are an excellent!!!! instructor
hi I have downloaded the free neck pattern but I am unsure of dimensions. would love to try this .
Just use your own measurement and that neck line will fit almost anyone:) have fun
how much wider would you make this than your body measurement? I think you sewed it all the way from underarm to hem...is that correct?
Yes I did sew from the arm down, as for the size, it really is a personal comfort size
how wonderful will try!
have fun!
Love this 🩵🦋🩵
Thank you for this great video I love it I was looking for this one for long time
I have a question, how would I finish off the side seams if I am using a delicate fabric such as chiffon? thanks for the video, Rita x
I would use a over-lock stitch. If you have a serger you could use that.
awesome thanks for that :)
I used Rayon. Where Laura sergers down the sides, I turned over and stitched a 5mm hem first. I followed the rest of the instructions just the same, so when when I pressed the side seams open, the raw edges were folded under. I then sewed the seam open so that the raw edges were concealed.
ohhh right so it became a flat seam thats hidden.. good idea. thanks for that Cathy
Wow that's on my list to do thank you.
HI Deb....your list is getting big! How have you been? any new road trips?
