Volkswagen is propelling its operations into a new era in China with the debut of the ID. CODE concept car at the Auto China 24 trade fair in Beijing. This event marks a significant leap in Volkswagen's long-standing relationship with the Chinese market, as the company unveils a strategy to align more closely with the unique needs and desires of Chinese consumers.
The ID. CODE concept car, which introduces a fresh aesthetic and previews a large electric SUV, is the centerpiece of Volkswagen's renewed focus in China. It's designed for Level 4 fully autonomous driving, indicating a shift towards more technologically advanced vehicles that cater to the growing demand for automation in mobility. This car is not just a new model but a harbinger of Volkswagen’s future direction in China-a future that embraces electrification and cutting-edge technology.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, outlined the three pillars of this strategy: an expanded product portfolio, a new brand and design language tailored for the Chinese market, and enhanced local technical development through strong partnerships in China. These elements are designed to accelerate Volkswagen’s electrification efforts and integrate more deeply with the local technological ecosystem.
Moreover, the introduction of the ID.UX sub-brand targets a younger demographic with all-electric, lifestyle-oriented models. The first of these, the ID.UNYX, is set to launch in 2024, highlighting Volkswagen’s commitment to appealing to new customer segments and reinforcing its presence in the electric vehicle market.
Volkswagen’s ambitious plan includes the expansion of the ID. family to 16 models by 2030, demonstrating a comprehensive strategy to dominate the electric vehicle landscape in China. By intertwining advanced technological development with strategic local partnerships, Volkswagen is not just participating in China’s automotive future but is actively shaping it, ensuring a tailored and resonant approach for its second-largest market.
