Living on a lake in northern MN I fish A LOT in the summer. I try about everything out there for both smallies and largies. The classic bass jig is one lure that I have very little confidence in. I've thrown it a lot and really not had any great days using them. I know it is a popular technique and I suspect it is a detail I'm probably not realizing but it is a low performer in my boat.
New to your channel. Out of all the fishing youtubers I have to say...your channel is the best to me. I have recently went to fishing jigs to step up my fishing. I'm not a tournament fisherman and probably never will, it's just not my thing. I have learned so much from watching your past video's about jig fishing. I have also picked up some other tips on different lures and worm fishing from your past video's.
Tyler and group: do you find that you can flip cover with a swim jig and paddle tail and then go back to fishing it swimming style like normal or is it imperative to have that crawl or creature tail when you flip into cover?
Good video, couldn’t have said it better. A Jig is a nice compact tool everyone should have. So many sizes, shapes of heads, hook gauges, colors to choose from. There’s alot of modifications you can do to the jig itself and trailers that make a big difference as well. Trimming the skirt like mention, trimming weed guard, type of trailer, action of trailer, dying the trailer, etc. Once you get dialed in on all that depending on forage, time of year, water clarity, location, cover/structure etc its lights out.
Man, your videos are great, whether you are just starting or have been fishing for years. Love the education of it. Watched your other video of you just fishing it was great too. Keep them coming!! Great Job
Great video Tyler. Good solid info that I appreciate. Thanks man. Love the Organization & Pattern Within the Pattern. Wise advice for any lure or technique. 👍🏼😎🎣
Bladed jig is great when the water is dirty (compared to how it normally is in that body of water) also when the fish are really keying into reaction style baits a chatterbait is phenomenal. I always find that covering water im either throwing a chatterbait or a swimjig (regular jig with a swimbait trailer will also work). Chatterbait when water is dirty or really cloudy day. Swimjig any other time. Best thing about a swimjig is you can use it as a regular jig as well, pitch it into cover and let it sink a hop it back or you can swim it by a slow constant reel
Great stuff. I have a box of jigs all jumbled together and I have no idea what I am throwing most of the time. My next project: building a jig box with labels! Also need to throw them more. Not sure why I’ve gotten away from jigs. My first really big bass was on a bitsy flip jig in a lake I had never caught any biguns before. Jigs catch big bass!!
Call me crazy, but I absolutely LOVE pitching and flipping with spinning gear!!! I am new to baitcasters, only used them for two years, and I sure seem to get a lot of line overruns and then backlash trying to flip and pitch with my baitcasters. I know I'm the odd ball here, but I honestly still use my Medium Heavy spinning rod and 4000 size spinning reel to flip and pitch.
Great question. I love to flip with both spinning and casting. When I’m using my spinning gear, I use my index finger to “feather” the line. Cpt. Chris Myers has an old video, “how to cast a spinning reel to catch more fish.” That goes in to the details.
Love your videos!!! You brought something out that I haven’t thought about. Fall rate of jigs. Do you have a video explaining when to use a heavier jig or know when to switch to one? Also, I see you have a purple craw with blue flake as a trailer. When and where would you throw that? What about sapphire blue craw? Would you fish a swinging football head jig like a jig? Again, love your videos! Thought I’d throw out all my questions I had throughout the week before I forgot them. Lol 😂
I have caught EXACTLY ONE BASS on a jig my while life..something I need to fix..I need to do what some pros suggest..Go out fishing and take one or two lures ONLY... Teach yourself to fish it, and learn it's nuances...I hate doing that because I HATE getting skunked..Maybe I'll go out with just jigs, and try em in all situations and cover types... and using different weight sizes and trailers... I LOVE the "meat scale" reference...sadly I have actually done that!😊😋
What’s the best jig for kinda clear water about 4ft of clarity or so. I’m a bank fisherman. I’m also in north Alabama around the Huntsville/Guntersville area.
3 foot clarity? Maybe try throwing a green pumpkin jig with a black and blue trailer. Sometimes offsetting colors will be the key, they don't always have to match.
I've been trying to learn and gain confidence in the jig I even bought a rod and reel specifically for the jig/frog but yesterday I caught one that was close to my pb it was at least in my top 3 grabbed my scales and battery was dead SMH so took a couple pics gave her a kiss helped her get some water through her gills and held on to her til she took off Oh yeah that was on Friday the 13th!!! What a lucky day and I caught it on the 7in mag super fluke smokin shad
Tyler, great vid. You mentioned that "peck, peck, peck" that often happens. What is actually going on when that occurs? I picture the bass down there kissing the bait, but I suspect that's not it at all.
My biggest mistake is setting the hook too fast with any lure. I panic and set the hook and rip it right out of their mouth. I always see other people kinda reel down and set the hook which takes a second... but I always use a quick panic hookset 🤦🏻 lol
Why haven’t they been putting the weight on them from the beginning? That would definitely help keep the tackle organized. It’s hard to tell the difference between a 5/8 an 1/2 oz. Even a 3/8 to a 1/2 oz can be hard to tell They should mark crank baits depth range. That would be great
My wife and I have our own separate scales for the same reason you mentioned. She said it is not okay to have the same scale for these two very different purposes 🤷🏻♂️
Some good advice , too bad I can't catch a bass on a jig and I throw them every time out , other day I must have tied on 10 different jigs and still no bites, bought a new jig rod in January and have zero fish fish on it lol
On your cast let the jig settle a little longer than soft plastics. Watch your line in case he grabbed it on the fall ( that's the tough bite to feel). Then give the jig a little giggle. Still no bite hop it about 6" off the bottom. Sometimes a drag is better, usually if it is cold. Reel in repeat. I hope it helps, good luck!
@@kevinbeaudean704 Got a few since I posted that comment but I can put on a swinghead or tokyo rig and catch more fish , still keep a jig tied on but my confidence isn't growing
Two things that I have learned….I just started concentrating a jig a couple years ago. Slow down They will carry the jig longer than you think you don’t have to set it immediately
Can you use a curly tail as your trailer on your flipping jig? Like a 4 inch twister tail?

This dude has become my favorite to watch! I use to love intuitive fishing, but this has been my go to. My wife calls him the good teeth guy haha
Check out tactical bassin
And the hookuptacle
Me too
I think Randy just tries to put out videos for money
Man, the casts under that dock 🤯🤯🤯

Fishing a jig is definitely the weak spot in my game. Ill be working on that this summer. Tough to put the senko down. Thanks for the tips

Tyler, are you telling me that scale in my kitchen IS NOT for jigs, split shot, and bullet weights???😳🤦🏼♂️🤯😂😂😂😂😂😂
Interesting comments on how they bite. Well said Tyler.
Great break down thanks for sharing 🎣 👍

Would you recommend a jig to fish in Florida
Hey Tyler, I’m from the Midwest too. When do I switch from a bladed jig to a regular jig? What defines when I use which?

Tyler, I have a video suggestion. One thing I can’t figure out is how to flip with spinning gear. Would love a tutorial on how to do it
The only way I can is to roll cast, mostly I just throw lighter casting gear if I want to go finesse

@@midwestfischerman 50lb braid will rarely over run and backlash. As long as you stop the spool BEFORE your bait hits the water. Lol

You can't beat a casting rod bro.. I also used to use a spinning setup.. when I learnt to use a casting setup it changed bass fishing for me.
Totally awesome. Thanks for sharing
Awesome content man! I love jig fishing and Texas rigs. Almost all of my PB's came on one or the other.
🤣🤣🤣 I took the mail scale!!! That was funny..thought it was just me.. good stuff

Jig fishing is one of my weakest yet favorite techniques. But all of the success I've had on a jig came from your instructional jig content
terrific vid, Tyler!
We love a good jig

Hey do you use weights on jigs?
Sup Tyler. Great video. Love when you do jig videos. Some reason it's something I have hard time with. Any information helps. Ty tc
Can you get away with fishing jigs with braid? My line selection is limited but want to try out some of my new jigs lol

Why more companies don't put the weight on their baits is baffling . Talking to you Rapala and Strike King.

If my jig don’t have the weight on it I either mark it or use a fine engraver
Are spinnerbaits and bladed jigs all part of the jig family ? Because if so I’m good with a jig , if not I’ve never caught a jig fish .
No, they aren’t
My wife and I have our own separate scales for the same reason you mentioned. She said it is not okay to have the same scale for these two very different purposes 🤷🏻♂️
Lololol you know
They say jig size isn’t important but we know they’re just being nice
Some good advice , too bad I can't catch a bass on a jig and I throw them every time out , other day I must have tied on 10 different jigs and still no bites, bought a new jig rod in January and have zero fish fish on it lol
Just keep at it and you’ll break through one day, 2 or 3 good fish out of the same brush pile and your world will change.
On your cast let the jig settle a little longer than soft plastics. Watch your line in case he grabbed it on the fall ( that's the tough bite to feel). Then give the jig a little giggle. Lmfao 🤣 I used the meat scale too!!
Why did that sound like a personal experience? "Wife caught me using her meat scale weighing my jigs!" LOL
Dang never thought about the meat scale ty. Obviously your wife caught you glad you still alive.
Main reason for keeping organized: "really don't want to use the wife's kitchen scales." Oddly specific :)
Not the meat scale😂
As I get better and better with a jig I find it harder and harder to fish anything else.... Big Fish Bait
Sounds like you’re speaking from experience with the kitchen scale and angry wife 😂
Someone has definitely used a meat scale and been caught a time or two. 😂
A jig is such a low percentage bait for me that I just throw creature baits because I can’t get bit on a jig very often
Two things that I have learned….I just started concentrating a jig a couple years ago.
Slow down
They will carry the jig longer than you think you don’t have to set it immediately
Well... 🤔🤔🤔🤔Now I need a 🍖 meat scale....off to Amazon I go💸💸💸
That’s what I do. Keep one on the boat too.
I have never caught anything on a jig.
Meat scale... righhhtt
I feel called out...the number of times I have used my wife's baking scale to weight lures...shameful.
✨✨✝️✨✨
Never caught a bass on a jig.
try it, i’ve caught more on a jig than any other lure including senko.
Yeah I don't keep women around to tell me what I can or can't do in my kitchen.
Wife catching you using her meat scale 😂. Funny now but probably not then 😊
BassFishingHQ i cant catch bass on jig for nothin
