You aren't encouraging wasteful spending on plants at all; I come here because I enjoy your conversational style and I am already buying plants. We already share the passion. You have great ideas on how to care for them!
Yes, you are a terrible influence and I hold you entirely responsible for my addiction (and my mum who said ‘you have to see this lady on gardener’s world’) but doing planty things while watching your videos is my happy place 🥰
Don’t ever listen to negative comments!! Watching your videos brings me so much joy. It’s so calming. I love doing my plant chores at the same time as you. Thank you so much for all you do!!
I love how you touched on the fact that maybe sometimes we forget to take in the small moments with our plants. I've been coming out of a mild burnout myself. You have enlightened me in which it happens to many but also to really enjoy the smaller moments more frequently. Thank you!
Claire, I love your videos! I’m agoraphobic and can’t get out much and don’t have many friends. Watching you feels like i’m having a chat with a bestie! ❤
I absolutely love how gently and thoughtfully you placed that spider in a different plant. I keep tarantulas as my other hobby and I love all spiders. It was so nice to see you be so kind to one. 💗
oh, yes dear claire! nature is truly, deeply magical! it’s wondrous to get hands covered in earth knowing in your heart that the land brings you life by nourishing plants who give air and keep us all alive! magic is the finest word for nature 🌱 ✨ a beautiful hour with you and well spent even if i didn’t dig in the dirt alongside you 💚
I've combined my pink syngonium with a milk confetti and they look so great together. I think the combo idea is great for plants that look alike or compliment one another while needing the same light et al requirements. You should do that for sure!
I’ve recently gotten into houseplants and your channel makes me so happy ❤ you seem like a lovely person, your excitement over plants is infectious, and these long chatty videos are the best!
That Sempervivum is very cold hardy and can be grown outdoors. I've never seen them sold in my area as a house plant, they are always sold for your outdoor garden. Also called Hens and Chicks. The "chicks" can be set on top of soil and will easily root. Beautiful!
Yeah, my mum has always had a pot of mixed semperivivum outside the front door, when too many babies(chicks) overflowed she just grabbed a handful and literally threw them in the rockery by the pond and they took over all the cracks and look great
I totally agree with you about the enjoyment of having the leisurely time for just you and your plants. I have been retired for several years and have the time now to do that, especially in the morning with a cup of coffee. My husband has his woodworking hobby to putter at in his workshop so we each get our much needed alone time. I feel like I have a close tie with my 30 plants. They are my escape from all the turmoil in the world. Just me and God’s beautiful creation.
Those people who make those negative comments can go to another channel. You help inspire my hobby . I appreciate when you show me something new to me ! I share your passion!
Claire the plant that Ross got you is called hens and chicks they are outside plants they are winter hardy and will put off lots of pups that you can pull off the mother plant don’t worry about roots just put them in the dirt and they will grow 😊
This is a very helpful vid for me because I just can't say goodbye to even the most annoying shitty plants. I'm also unable to do my plant chores without you being my body double 😂 Brilliant vid, loving the calm chatty vibe as always ❤
I started this last spring with like 13 plants, and got discouraged because a lot of my collection died off because I just had a hard time dialing in the light and humidity levels last winter and sadly, a lot of my collection died. New apartment problems, my last place had LOADS of natural lighting... I've gone from 13 to 87,and lots of them are combined so well over 100 not including the prop boxes🤣 I've got high hopes for this fall and winter because I bought grow bulbs reinforcements and humidifiers and even small diffusers🤣
I absolutely understand the excitement of having a friend get into plants! A friend of mine was looking for some terrarium plants and some house plants and I gave her like 13 plants xD Since you asked which shops we like, I'll mention "jungle leaves" they are a small nursery in Germany and have actually somewhat recently started a UA-cam channel! The guys are so sweet and their information about the plants is amazing! They show case unusual and common plants and it's always so informative. Their care advice on their site should be in English, but the videos are German ^^ (I'd still recommend the video about how to research a plants needs, since the sources they use are mostly in English)
Same for me 😂 a friend asked me for recommendations for easy plants and next time, I visited her, I brought like 10 plants and propagations (+ repotted and saved her very sad existing plants) I can also recommend 'jungle leaves'! These guys are amazing ❤
Hey Claire nice Viedo!!!!! I heard that the Luxurians make these bubbles on the leaves to increase their surface area so they can absorb more light because in their natural habitat they don't get much light. I think she will like the place. I don't have any information about the other one.
People can only influence if they want to be and they must all ready have plants or they wouldn’t be here. Don’t worry about what someone says they don’t have to be here. Love you’re Chanel 😊
we make succulent arrangement pots at work (nursery and houseplants) and we put baby haworthia and a couple succulents in there. They have similar care needs. The hen and chicks may pot up with the haworthia, and you can divide the "chicks" if you feel it gets too over grown.
Thank you for sharing the video. It was exactly what I needed to hear to move my old bum and report that dying Haworthia. Hold on neighbors; You're gonna grow them whether you like it or not lol
Thanks for this. Really like the combining for plants that look similar/have similar care needs! Sorry to hear about the negative comments. Watching your videos sometimes kickstarts me when I have to do some chores and don’t feel up to them yet (so far not to run to the shop and buy more plants 😂 Propagating Hoyas in tree fern fibre for me: not as successful as a moss/perlite mix, but I love growing them in tree fern after they have been rooted. Hoya names: a Hoya can grow different types of leaves entirely in different circumstances. That is why we cannot just change the names on them. For most of them seems that only the flower can tell what it is for sure. But even then… some flowers look alike. For this one, since you already know its a type of Hoya Australis then that is probably all that can ever be said for sure. What if I think my Hoya is something else , I change the name and then sell or trade a cutting to someone who is looking for a specific Hoya… and then later on it turns out to be a different one than the one they wanted? If you suspect a Hoya may be something else, please do keep the original name for when you trade or sell, in extreme cases you can always mention “bought as Hoya ‘x’ but may be Hoya ‘y’” 😊 I also love supporting small businesses! Especially when they hand-make things…. However when they flip things for twice the price or way more I prefer to buy it cheap at the source 😉 Plantcare keeps costing money.. pot upgrades, soil refreshments, trellisses, fertiliser, grow lights… constantly buying those things, I am happy that at some point it stabilizes a bit and it becomes sort of the same recurring expense that can be budgetted 😅
Simpervivum aka hen and chick's is cold hardy. You can try one on your balcony this winter to see if it will live. Because some will live in zone 3 in the United States
I call my pots that have multiple different plants in them frankinpots. My pride and joy is at my office. It has burgundy rubber tree, big box store antherium, philo mocans, golden pothos, and andansonii. They're all thriving together... maybe a little too well.
I always think that the best way to make space is to get rid of doubles and triples. Like do you really need a specific plant in every corner of your space? If you have any doubt, just give it away or only keep a little cutting as a security deposit for your big plant. Why keep three times the same plant if you can have another (new) plant that looks different 😊
I just got plant mail today! Plus she sent an extra one and they all 3 had several corms on them! I couldn't believe it, they are just babies themselves! I got a Poly and a Quilted Dream. I was super excited! Buy I don't have anywhere near the plants you do! Maybe 40.. 🤷♀️ Mainly Alocasia, Monstera, Sansevieria, Pothos, and some Philodendron. Plus outside I have Hibiscus and Palms. I live in Florida, USA
I’m so with you! I haven’t had my hands in the dirt in like a month and I feel it. That’s my therapy. I’m potting up some props today. ❤ Also, since your burnout is less physical and more just losing the excitement of the hobby, I think buying new plants is completely reasonable.
40:15 I have transferred all my plants to leca around a month after I started with houseplants few months ago. Well, all except one. I need a courage to do it with that one as it is quite delicate succulent with plenty long stems. Hope to save few quid as I don't need to buy soil (and other ingredients) anymore, just refresh leca as and when needed. I also tried perlite, pon and spaghnum moss but leca is the winner for me when it comes to taking care of the plants as well as being able to see roots just by lifting the growing containers out of their dark containers (not many pots in my household, I use mostly 1 pint transparent cups, lol) 😊
Hello Claire, just want to start by saying I love your video's, they have helped me alot. Also you would give some of this plants to your friend who is just starting out with plants😀🌱
I want to add a few new plants I lost a few (8) because of the heat and now we are back in the heat ): so I am waiting to go plant shopping until it cools down I always try and save even the most bedraggled plant (I just can not throw a plant away) You gave me some ideas about combining some of my plants (which will make me more room for more)!! Love your vibe My favorite plant channel!
I use to have the Hoya Burtonia variegated one. But kept dropping leaves on me for some reason. I feel some Hoya’s just hard to grow and can become finicky. Especially variegated ones for me now. Which sad about since it what attracted me in getting them. Now i only grow splashy and reptile looking ones now. I love the Hoya Sawarak cream the most for it’s heart shape and new leaves comes in red. When sun stressed has a blush colour. Than the latifolia. I don’t get cuttings and small Hoya’s anymore takes ages to grow a full pot. And also can be not stable. I buy my Hoya’s from foliage-factory now. Don’t know if ship to the UK. The Sempervivum and chicks and hens they are great plants very hardy. I grow those on my balcony and can take harsh winter weather too.
New plants just fill you with energy - I got myself some anthurium hybrids recently and I run to check on them every morning. The funny thing is that I’m most excited about the one I bought not knowing what it looks like (seller recommended it to me) - papillilaminum x crystallinum, so stunning 😍
Yes! Kerrigan is correct! And the Momma( The Hen ) Even flowers. I've only had them in my outdoor gardens! Never kept them inside. But they do overwinter in our Cold Canadian Winters! And grow all Fresh and New Again❤🌿 They also Spread, growing Bran New Chicks! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this Plant! Enjoy Claire! Thankyou also for another Wonderful Video! Love to Yulie❤🐾 Hello to Ross! How does Ross make his Art Work? He's AMAZING!!! 🤗❤️🐾🌿🇨🇦
Your sempeveriam can go outside. I have mine in huge terracotta bowls and literally just leave them to go. I’d separate the plants into the bowl and they’ll fill themselves in as they grow then just pop it outside and leave it. I don’t know if your balcony gets rain but I literally don’t water mine and they thrive, had to split my 2 bowls this year and now have multiple all filed again. It should thrive out there.
This might be an unpopular opinion but if I don’t have a pot small enough, I’ll just use one that’s a little big and only fill it up half way 😅 Also instead of buying trellises (or in addition), I keep a roll of thick wire that won’t rust and I make my own. Also I’d def mount the bar under the tv rather than the table so it doesn’t point towards the screen. I believe the new mother grow light swivel so you can point it straight down, down and out, etc. ❤
I would assume high humidity in air encourages aerial roots on your cactus. But even with lower humidity they may grow them. Not much you can do about those I think.
I've only started the pot combining for my hoyas, which are now hanging on the new tension rod in a south facing window. It's all snips I've traded off reddit (did buy 1 hoya from a plant shop the week my Dad went into hospice) and tried to not let the OH see how much was coming in/ what they can grow to between April - August... so you'd hate me because I have burtoniae and compacta together in 1 pot. XD If you want something else to have a bit of a childhood nostalgia, get the lego flower kits!! I've now got 2 :)
Please don’t feel bad bc of comments like that 😱 I love your videos and live vicariously through you bc I can’t get a lot of the plants you have. I can only get pet friendly (100% non toxic) ones bc I have to nosy cats who love to chew on everything green 😅 so my collection is mainly Calathea, maranta and peperomia 🙈 Also I was wondering whether you or anyone in the community has experience with these small grow lights that you can get on Amazon that are like only supporting one plant? My Calathea leopardina is getting yellow leaves in her spot and I can’t afford a „real“ grow light there bc she’s the only plant in this area but I wanna keep her there 🙈 and I’m also just getting my head wrapped around the whole growlight thing 😅 any suggestions are highly appreciated
What was the name of the medium you propagated the first plant in, I've listened several times and can't understand what you're saying, sorry. I'm hearing tree form fiber? IDK what that is, new plant lover here.
Hi Claire, I make my own trellis out of garden wife ‘ Heavy Duty general purpose wire’, Gardman, purchased from garden centre. It’s £5.99 for 20 m. All I need is a pair of snips to cut the wife and a round wooden chopping board for the shape. Fast, cheap and easy to make 😊
hi Claire...its a long shot bt I m hooked onto watching ur videos..nd that hs got me wanting to hv sme plants of my own..sadly I cannt afford it, bt if u can post me cutting of hoyas or pothos like global green or manjula..ill b eternally grateful..ill pay 4 the postage..or nyone in u.k willing to let me these cutting..I hv checked locally aswell, bt either they charging 4 cutting or doing it in plant swaps..I dunt hv any plant to swap it with as of nw
Was it due to over watering, lack of sun? I’ve brought back some that most would say are beyond dead from the heat here but they come back if you give them love and a chance! If I could post a pic of one that I’m rehabbing I’d show you how bad it can get and bounce back from!
@@teresalynnturner781 my outdoor succulents mostly died when I caught covid. It was 117ish outside and they were doing a gallon of water a day (I had a few succulents) and they tried but couldn’t handle the heat. East facing and under 50% shade cloth under a covered patio. I use lots of chunky pumice 33%, 33% succulent soil and 15% crushed up lava rock and the rest coconut coir to help retain some moisture. That’s the indoor mix, terracotta pot with drainage. Out door, for me, is way more coconut coir and no terracotta or dark colored pots. I live in an extremely dry and hot region of the US
Pending on the plant, usually it’s to help make the parent plant more full. For Hoya, they are singular vines so adding in more makes it look lush and full I learned to indoor garden from propagations rather than buying established plants, and with propagations, I do minor experiments with different growing techniques, conditions, and planting mediums. So let’s say I finally bit the bullet and start trying Pon, I’d use a propagation to grow in Pon before trying my main plant in there so if I mess up, it’s less of a loss. I recommend learning to propagate plants if you can’t grow them from seed and it’s an entirely different growing experience filled with so much learning of the specifics of your plant and how it reacts to your growing conditions! It also helps to acclimate the plant to your home and makes for easier care (allow a plant to adjust to thrive in lower than recommended humidity etc)
If you have vitamin D deficiency or are prone to depression in the winter, any grow light may benefit your mood--its the UV radiation coming in contact with skin that causes us to create vitamin D and can enhance mood.

Yep totally agree it will not do good indoors it’s alpine plant that usually grows outside

Brilliant vid, loving the calm chatty vibe as always ❤
Beautiful plants
I laughed at the "not a big haaaaauul" because that's what I tell my friends and family when I buy plants. August count : 27 new plants. 🙈🙉🙊
I started this last spring with like 13 plants, and got discouraged because a lot of my collection died off because I just had a hard time dialing in the light and humidity levels last winter and sadly, a lot of my collection died. Hi Clair!! I think sometimes we just get a plant that is a bad specimen. It may not be anything you're doing wrong. 🥰

I've definitely been combining a lot of plants recently to streamline my collection and make things more manageable 👌💚
I put Leca at the bottom of my no drainage semi hydro because it makes it easier to see the water line.
Make a nice display of the sempervivum for your balcony. Make sure it stays fairly dry when it’s freezing and then you can perfectly keep it outside

Declutter is not my favourite word 😅 good luck 🌿🍀
I can only get pet friendly (100% non toxic) ones bc I have to nosy cats who love to chew on everything green 😅 so my collection is mainly Calathea, maranta and peperomia 🙈
Also I was wondering whether you or anyone in the community has experience with these small grow lights that you can get on Amazon that are like only supporting one plant? My Calathea leopardina is getting yellow leaves in her spot and I can’t afford a „real“ grow light there bc she’s the only plant in this area but I wanna keep her there 🙈 and I’m also just getting my head wrapped around the whole growlight thing 😅 any suggestions are highly appreciated
That’s how I feel about my Dieffenbachia plant
Tree fern fibre... Have you got a link . I can't find it ... Thankyou
You look great! I’ve decided to combine my Pothos and Philodendrons as well. #MoreNewPlants
Tetrasperma looks great
Try growing some Catasetum Orchids. I have 15 growing inside. Very unusual. Incredible blooms
What was the name of the medium you propagated the first plant in, I've listened several times and can't understand what you're saying, sorry. I'm hearing tree form fiber? IDK what that is, new plant lover here.
Very close: tree fern fiber is what she is saying. It is an airy but moisture retaining substrate. My hoyas love it.
@@Amandkpa thank you.
I think in the wild the shingling section of the monstera dies anyway... it might not be your fault.
Hi Claire, I make my own trellis out of garden wife ‘ Heavy Duty general purpose wire’, Gardman, purchased from garden centre. It’s £5.99 for 20 m. All I need is a pair of snips to cut the wife and a round wooden chopping board for the shape. Fast, cheap and easy to make 😊
Apparently I can’t spell wire 🙄
Thanks so much for the suggestion! Hahah I spent a good minute there trying to work out what garden wife was 😂
oooh nooo, not the wife snip! 😂
Tree fern fiber is so expensive!! They are just plants and they can grow in other substrates
You can trim the roots. It will not harm the plant. I dut my ric rac cactus.
My hoya australis Lisa is looking completely different😮
hi Claire...its a long shot bt I m hooked onto watching ur videos..nd that hs got me wanting to hv sme plants of my own..sadly I cannt afford it, bt if u can post me cutting of hoyas or pothos like global green or manjula..ill b eternally grateful..ill pay 4 the postage..or nyone in u.k willing to let me these cutting..I hv checked locally aswell, bt either they charging 4 cutting or doing it in plant swaps..I dunt hv any plant to swap it with as of nw
Almost my whole collection has been from cuttings or plants going to the bin . If you were my neighbor I would give you a bunch of my props. ❤
I struggled with my Harwarthia for a few years and it finally died recently, I was not upset. LoL!
Was it due to over watering, lack of sun? I’ve brought back some that most would say are beyond dead from the heat here but they come back if you give them love and a chance! If I could post a pic of one that I’m rehabbing I’d show you how bad it can get and bounce back from!
@simonb6478 oh no. It's dead dead. Idk what went wrong with it...
I live in an extremely dry and hot region of the US
Also, not sepervium, but semperviVum (literally "always alive").
😊
Just out of curiosity, why propagate if you are trying to make room for new plants?
Pending on the plant, usually it’s to help make the parent plant more full. For Hoya, they are singular vines so adding in more makes it look lush and full
I learned to indoor garden from propagations rather than buying established plants, and with propagations, I do minor experiments with different growing techniques, conditions, and planting mediums.
Does Ross sell his art?
Baby necklace i think from what i can see. Looms likebit needs more light.
❤
💚💚💚
What happened to your variegated Burle Marx?
👍
Is Ross selling his planters on line ..
Does that first plant need more humidity? Looks like it needs a haircut
18:21 that white cabinet seems so far away behind you, and to see you reach back there…
Oh, sorry. I see now it's a door.😊😅😊😅
If you have vitamin D deficiency or are prone to depression in the winter, any grow light may benefit your mood--its the UV radiation coming in contact with skin that causes us to create vitamin D and can enhance mood.
I see a nice empty wall over your left shoulder 😂😊😂😊
I think your the exact opposite of a wasteful unsustainable youtuber - that troll obviously doesn't watch your channel- take no notice of the trolls ❤
if you want to declutter, i think deviding the New plant will go the wrong way, right? 😂
So, you started out wanting to get rid of plants and you ended up propagating them?
