    If anyone still finds this video, here’s the 2021 update... Canon gave us 24fps in 1080 shortly after I made this video. Completely negated and solved the whole “video problems” portion of this video. CR3 files now preview on my Mac. I bought the extension grip for the RP and it became the most comfortable camera I’ve ever held. I sold all my EF lenses and ended up getting the RF 24-70, 50 1.8, and 70-200 (couldn’t be happier). I bought an EOS R to replace my 5Diii and found that other than adding C Log and 4K DPAF the R was hardly worth the upgrade over an RP, as I only sometimes need those things (I have a video on the comparison). I sold the RP because a friend offered me his EOS R for very very cheap, and having two identical cameras is just great. Ultimately I started to notice frustration with both the R and RP tracking while backlit or with a dark exposure (even in adequate lighting, if the exposure was dark, say to retain your highlights, the cameras sucked) and I also noticed I was regularly frustrated with menu dives to change things like focus modes or white balance, there weren’t enough programmable shortcuts with either camera to make them quickly adaptable to frequently changing scenes. I sold one of the R’s two months ago for an R6 which solved every problem I had with both the RP and R. I still think the RP is the most amazing value for general content creators who might focus on portraiture and simple videos (hairdressers on IG!) especially if you need to make a LOT of content frequently. The big value in the RP over (say) an M50 is that the price spread from APS-C to this full frame is smaller than the price spread between an F1.8 and F1.2 lens, and is about the same price as adding a speed booster to the M50, so if that “full frame look” is a goal you REALLY can’t beat the RP’s value. If you want to focus more heavily on video and plan to grade/etc the footage then the EOS R is worth the upgrade. If you’re shooting action or anything in a quickly changing environment and you want a camera that adapts quickly without looking at menus ever, look into the R6. And if you’re not sure if you need the R5 then you don’t need the R5.

      Do you think the RP or R present an upgrade over the 5D Mark III?

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 роки тому +1

      @@alexhagen5105 different kind of tools altogether, almost apples and oranges. Both the RP and the R user interface and controls felt wayyyy lacking compared to my 5Diii, they are cumbersome and slow by comparison- as far as photography goes the experience with the RP/P felt a lot like using a Rebel or an M50. However, the video capabilities with both the RP and R made things which were impossible with the 5Diii possible- due to the flippy screen and focus tracking in video. If all I did was photo I could have happily stayed with the 5Diii forever, but because I began dabbling with making UA-cam videos I felt like I was almost forced into the RF system. Now that I’m using an R6 I have zero complaints (almost zero, the R6 jumps to auto iso by accident sometimes and I hate it). So yeah, long story short, if I’m 100% photo I’d personally take a 5D over the R/RP but if I’m also doing casual video I’d go with the RP and if I’m trying to do a little bit more serious video I’d go with the R.

      Thank you for that detailed response! I think the main reason for me wanting to switch is the eye autofocus these mirrorless cameras have. I have a 10 month old son who is constantly moving and I feel like the eye autofocus feature will be extremely handy. And also the weight! I feel like the lighter weight would be beneficial. From my understanding both the canon eos RP and R have similar image quality. Would you say that’s correct too? Again thanks!

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 роки тому +1

      @@alexhagen5105 when I was using the R and RP I was constantly cussing at my camera because the eye auto focus wasn’t very reliable while trying to shoot my toddler. On both of those cameras I found that eye AF is a great convenience for still subjects and it worked fine in sort of curated scenarios where the lighting was decent and the model was willing, but when put into real scenarios with less than perfect lighting and a squirrelly model I was constantly disappointed or frustrated. I would regularly yell toward my toddler in order to get her to look up at me so that the camera would recognize a face, otherwise it was focusing on a shoulder or a nearby flower. When I borrowed an R5 my wife commented that I wasn’t cussing at my camera, and I ended up ordering an R6 that same night. The tracking with the R5 and R6 is miles ahead of the RP/R. That was half of the reason I moved on to R6 (ergonomics and customization was the other half). But the R5/R6 know to grab the side or back of a head while the RP/R kind of need to see both eyes and a mouth before it recognizes that there’s a face in the frame. I mean there are workarounds with RP/R like setting an initial point for tracking then repeatedly going back to that point when it starts tracking something you don’t want, or you can drag across the screen to target a new subject, but the former ends up being as much work as just using a single point on your 5D and the latter requires a few precious seconds for the camera to lock on to the new target. To answer your other question, the image quality between R and RP is negligible in most cases but is massive when the cameras are pushed to limits. After light edits on well lit scenes you wouldn’t tell which camera was used, but heavily pulling up shadows at 6400 ISO will put the EOS R noticeably ahead of the RP.

    I have the RP with the extension grip and it is killer. I’m a raw shooter and a processing junkie, and the raws in C1Pro are amazing. I also noticed the grain/noise aspect that you pointed out in your video. It’s very tight and does look a lot like fine grain film grain.
    BTW, this camera is an absolute beast with the latest firmware. The touch-focus is insanely fast and dead accurate in any lighting condition. The focus square movement is immediate and has zero lag. Beats the the hell out of screwing around with a joy stick.

      I'm an enthusiast landscape photographer with a young child so I also dabble in portraits and slower actions shots of her obviously. I am moving to Full Frame after my D5600 Aps-c recently broke. Having to buy body & lens I am even more limited at this time within my already limited budget. I am extremely intrigued by the EOS RP but worried about the noise & shadow recovery even at base ISO. I am torn between EOS RP and maybe an older a7R ii that comes to nearly the exact same price. Love to hear your thoughts.

    • @ChicagoRob2
      @ChicagoRob2 4 роки тому +1

      My wife has the A7III, so I can relate to the differences. Right out of the gate, the A7III has better DR at base ISO, no denying that. As the ISO increases, the DR differences become less and less. At 1600 and above, they are very close. Handling wise, the RP is far superior, especially with the extension grip. It feels better in the hands and isn't as cramped. The RP menu system, IMO, is also much better.Customization with the RP is extremely versatile, given the button layout and menu options. One of the main reasons I bought the RP was so I could use the excellent RF24-105. IMO, it has no peer in its range and is optically superior to the Sony version in every way. IBIS was never a consideration, since the RF24-105 has 5 stops of IS built-in. Plus, the lens has a programmable control ring, which I use for exposure compensation. Low light AF is better with the RP, also. It's very accurate and quick to focus, even in extreme conditions. Image quality wise, both cameras are very close. In Capture One, I prefer the RP color rendering over the A7III.You may want to check out the Scott Drexler UA-cam video. He uses the RP professionally as a wedding photographer.

      @@ChicagoRob2 Thank you for the reply!
      Saw the video on him using the RP during weddings :) been scouring all the RP videos of coarse. The RF lens' are definitely quite something! I would start off with the 24-240 for general purpose and hiking. Then add a wide like a 15mm prime or classic 16-35. I would do this with either system. On the canon due to cost I would start with only the one RF and then get a used EF L series until able to afford more RF glass. I have held both the Sony & the RP and didn't mind either though yes the RP is a bit more ergonomic. I like the idea of focus stacking made easy by the touch screen on RP but again hesitant on that shadow recovery especially during sunsets/rises which I shoot a ton of! Though i'm sure either of these will be way ahead of my old D5600 in that regard.

    This is one of the best reviews of the EOS RP that I've ever seen. I feel your joy as well as your pain; especially the CR3 files LOL. Your ideas on what could be done with the control ring are absolutely brilliant, I hope Canon are watching… this has got me excited for the potential future.
    I've been shooting DSLR 5Dmk2, 6Dmk2 and added the EOS M50 a year ago, and loving it to bits. I tried my best to stay with EF lenses because like you, I didn't want two different lens systems bouncing about, but I've just got my first M lens, the M22 2.0 for the sheer size, which is what you want for street photography. It's amazing! The small M50 is now absolutely tiny.
    I've been considering the RP, and tried it out in the shop with that RF50… OMG! Those RF lenses are off the "fo'shizzle!…" Like you I prefer to shoot 35, 85, and 135, and so I think I'll wait for now, until that RF 15-35 f2.8 comes out maybe next year. I think I will sell one of my systems when I upgrade; maybe even two of them... we will see. Thanks for puttying your thoughts out on this. Love the shots by the way, especially the one from the RF50.... :0)

However, since this video I bought an EF 50L and decided to stay invested in EF mostly, because for most of my video projects I’m using multiple cameras (I bought a small army of 6D’s very cheap from a wedding photographer and use them to cover like 4 angles of a haircut at once- until I have 3 more RF bodies, likely never, I’m sticking with EF glass).

    Great video! It is SOOO refreshing to hear someone talk about this camera without preconceived notions about the EOS RP or coming from a perspective of a vlogger who only wants some kind of perfect video camera. I have an EOS T1i so anything is an improvement, but the cost factor for me is problematic. I really want it though. As you say it's made for the casual shooter, that may be true, but I have seen a video with an accomplished wedding photographer who uses two as his main cameras now, so it can get professional results as well. Again, it's nice to see someone talk about this camera as if it's a camera and not a complete failure for Canon, like they are going to fold because of this camera or something... There’s a lot to be said for the fun factor. I think low key, canon knows this and is keeping it at the front of their designs. Today I feel like everyone is a pixel peeper, but for me the experience and the feel, even the feel of certain “imperfections” is a huge factor in what and how I shoot. Something I want to challenge myself to do is borrow a Sony for long enough to see how fun it is. I’ve only used Sony for short trials and never got comfortable with the menus or controls, but I’m wondering how much of the RP’s fun is from that canon intuition vs having mirrorless capabilities.

    Thanks for doing this video. I recently purchased the EOS RP and have never done a video like this but now I probably will just to compare my experiences of a Canon 5D Mk4 user going to the EOS RP.
    Interesting what you said about the CR3 files, if you convert everything to DNG in Lightroom during import the files become universal and you won’t need to shoot raw+JPEG. I always shoot raw+JPEG(medium) so I have the best of both worlds in case I need to quickly send an image to my phone.
    Totally agree about keeping the EF lenses and using them with the adapter. I only have one Canon mirrorless body and several Canon DSLR bodies, it doesn’t make sense for me to buy lenses that only work on one body. I’m waiting for a mirrorless body that will equal or surpass the 5D Mk4 and then I’ll start investing in more RF mount bodies and eventually the scales will tip in that direction.
    The lack of 24fps is on my list of advantages the EOS R has over the EOS RP:
    - EOS R uses the same LP-E6N batteries as my Canon 5D Mk4, EOS RP uses a completely different battery
    - EOS R has a max shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, EOS RP has a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec
    - EOS R can use a battery grip, EOS RP doesn't have any battery grip option
    - EOS R has USB 3.1 (5Gb/sec), EOS RP has USB 2.0 (480Mb/sec)
    - EOS R has 24fps for video, EOS RP does not (unless you shoot cropped 4k)
    - EOS R is 30MP, EOS RP is 26MP - not as drastic as some of the other differences but if I'm getting a new camera I'd rather the sensor be equal to or greater than my existing 5D Mk4 bodies.

    Apple needs to release an update to support the raw files from the Canon RP. CR3 is not a standard file format... it varies with every camera! For example when I first got my Canon RP, I couldn't use Lightroom for about a month until Adobe released an update for the RP. Hopefully Apple will add support for the RP with macOS Catalina (or sooner).

    • @xevcon
      @xevcon 5 років тому

      You can use Adobe DNG converter to convert the CR3 files to DNG. Then they will work on your Mac until Apple releases the next Camera Raw update -- I expect that to happen September 2019.

    Nowadays if a camera isn't called Sony, it doesn't record 4K 240fps or it doesn't have a 500k ISO range or a dynamic range of 25 stops seems not to be able to capture photos.
    I found this review very helpful because in addition to the cons you also talked about the pros.. and yes, for those interested in the photo side, this camera is a little beast, in quality and price ratio

    Thanks your opinion on this camera is interesting.
    I understand you're stuck between two systems (EF/RF), but I think that buying an EF lens nowadays is a mistake. We are just at the begining of the RF mount. Once they will decide to sell a pro mirrorless camera with dual cards and a decent burst mode, I won't see any benefits of having a DSLR. I think EF mount is dead, the adapter is here only to let people do the transition with their expensive glass.

      I only tried the EOS RP for a short amount of time, but I can tell that some big issues I was having on my 5D III instantly disapeared :
      - in the viewfinder, you see your real exposure, no need to shoot -> check -> adjust -> reshoot...
      - autofocus is much more precise, especially with wide aperture lenses, and easy to use. Joystick selection on 5D is too slow in my opinion. And that eye AF is just perfect, it would have save me tons of wedding pictures. Also I had big issues focusing under colored led lights, the 5D is just lost. I'm certain the RP don't have this issue with dual pixel autofocus
      - you can see your real depth of field in the viewfinder, which help having two people in focus for example

    I hear you on the lens dilemma. The conclusion I’ve come to is the RF mount is the future. It might be simpler to just ditch the SLR bodies completely and go all in on the RF mount. Keep the EF lenses you have and replace them when funds allow. For my film SLR I’ve gone down to just two lenses, the 40mm stm prime and the 50mm stm prime. I generally shoot wider when snapshotting with my film bodies, so that works for me, otherwise, I’m transitioning over to RF for everything.

    I actually have the SL2. Just bought the RP as my first foray in the full frame world. I like the fact the RP doesn't have a lot of gimmicks and it's cheap while still full frame. I'm gonna adapt some EF lenses and see what it can do. People talk about poor dynamic range but if people are shooting at poor exposure, they are the problem, not the camera.

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  4 роки тому +1

      The way I see the dynamic range issue, is that there are people who only shoot when they know it'll look good, and they won't pull out the camera in bad lighting or whatever, and then there are people who will shoot everything anyways, try to save it in post. The longer I keep at this, the more I find myself leaving my camera in the bag unless I know I'm going to get a good shot. With crazy dynamic range you can pull detail out of shots in less than ideal lighting. I personally would just rather wait for (or more often, create) good light. In my studio dynamic range isn't an issue, I dial in all the light and it's good. I do understand that there are types of photography where the only option is to have great dynamic range, but I think the RP is still amazing for most photography.

    • @StatusQuo209
      @StatusQuo209 4 роки тому

      @@andrewdoeshair ahh okay. How are would you say the camera performs in less than ideal light, but exposed to the right? I've been reading and seeing people say the sensor on the RP is much better at pulling detail from the highlights, than pulling detail out of the shadows. A couple UA-camrs even say to expose to the right by one or two stops.
      I'm gonna test out the camera for a couple weeks. If it's a bad buy, it gets returned.

    The only reason I decided to keep my eos m50 instead of upgrading to the eos rp is because they both suck in 4k :( so i was just going to pay for better photos. I'm going to wait until they make a camera that's better for video as i love making videos. Hopefully we can finally get 120 fps at 1080 if they do that i will buy it! I think you’re right about the similarities to the M50... Since I made this clip I’ve been fiddling with the video features a lot more and pretty much feel like it’s not even worth calling a “full frame camera” when it comes to video. I mean there’s the obvious 1.75 crop in 4K but then if you use the digital stabilization you lose like, another .25, so for many video applications you’re not using the full sensor. It’s only a full frame if you’re shooting at 30/60fps on a tripod 😐

    Please correct me if I am wrong. But why would you use the In-Camera-Crop to x1.6 if you could reach just the same result when cropping in later? When using the in Camera-Crop you just lose some of the data you could capture.

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  4 роки тому +1

      Sometimes a faster and easier work flow is more important to me than saving the most data possible. If I’m shooting a client (I’m talking about a haircut client, not a photography client) they just want a small jpeg air dropped to them in the next two minutes to post on their instagram, then I lose no necessary data by cropping the sensor. I just get to feeeeel like I’m swapping between a 50mm/85mm or between 85mm/135mm if I want to crop the sensor. It’s all about the feeling of each perceived focal length, and also about quicker work flow, at least whenever it’s not all about max data (which is most of the time, for me). The sensor can also be cropped to 1:1 or 16:9 for photo, which is great for shooting instagram photos and also for grabbing a quick cover photo for UA-cam, again, when maximum convenience outweighs maximum data.

      I recently got that lens and I would say it’s very much worth the money. It sits between good and great as far as sharpness, the AF is lightning fast and is silent, stabilization is remarkable. If you go to my Instagram (@andrewdoeshair) and look for the photo set of a woman with a painted face, that whole set was shot with the RF 24-105mm... You won’t get gnarly bokeh, but for weight, convenience, video, basically everything but low light and mega shallow depth of field, it’s a killer lens.

      In my experience, the 5Diii will feel more robust, a lot tougher, and if I need to grab a shot in a split second it’s much faster to configure and focus. There’s also the weather sealed aspect to it that’s nice. However, the RP has so many bells and whistles that the 5D doesn’t, bells and whistles I never needed before but can’t live without now. Like WiFi, touch screen, usb charging, etc. If I’m shooting in a clean controlled environment where I can take my time then RP all day, but if I were shooting in a dirty or rainy scenario I’d prefer the 5Diii... Also, though, I’d consider the future- the 5Diii aged beautifully for years but is now becoming a classic relic. With the RP you’ll be a little more future proof. Oh yeah, lastly, the RF glass is beautiful. I’ve owned the EF 24-105 and I own the RF 24-105 now, and the RF is way nicer. I never checked side by side but the RF feels considerably lighter, the focus is instant and silent, and the stabilization is silent.

I'm not a spec nerd pixel peeper kind of guy, I just want something fun and intuitive-- in fact if I can have some control removed so I don't get analysis paralysis, that's even better. My friends who use Sony get soooo much more into detail than I do, and it could just be a culture thing that Sony attracts more of those kinds of shooters, but canon somehow has made me believe that good enough is good enough, and there's a weird kind of freedom there (laughing emoji here)

    Hi I'm so glad you have the SL2 and the RP! I'm looking to upgrade from the SL2 (it's the best camera I've personally owned and used) my upgrades so far have been small and mediocre (t5-t6-sl2) so now I'm hoping my next upgrade to actually be a larger difference and hopefully wow me but also still be affordable. I'm now looking at an RP would be my first fullframe and first mirrorless. Since you own both can you please tell me if there's a noticeable quality difference and if this upgrade will wow me? Video isn't important for me right now in a professional aspect only take personal family videos.

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  4 роки тому

      Where you'll really (and immediately) see a difference is at the low end of your aperture. If you're used to using a 50mm F1.8 on your crop sensor cameras, it'll feel way wider on the RP, but you won't lose any subject isolation to get this wider look, as compared to putting a 35mm on a crop sensor for a similar field of view. When you shoot at like, 85mm F1.8 or F1.4 on a full frame you'll get a similar field of view as a 50mm on your crop sensor, but you'll get a depth of field that is impossible to achieve with a 50mm on a crop sensor. So it's those 1.2, 1.4, and 1.8 areas on any lens where you'll start getting looks in your images that you couldn't before. If you use an 85mm at F2.8 on a full frame you'll get a similar look to 50mm F1.8 on a crop sensor. So if you make this upgrade, you'll notice it immediately when you're shooting wide open. If you've been shooting at F4 or higher anyways, you likely won't see a massive difference.

Actually this video was done with said Tamron on an SL2... 85mm can be very hard to shop for, since they all seem to be lacking in some area. I first owned a Rokinon 85mm F1.2 and I loved it- optically it was very impressive (although it had a strong green tint) but the lack of auto focus had me eventually move to Canon's 85mm F1.2L ii, which had severe color fringing issues and slowwwwww auto focus, so I recently switched to a Sigma 85mm Art, and while it's super duper sharp with quick auto focus, the out of focus areas are sort of ugly (I have a video about it, see "questions for sigma owners" on my channel). Lately I've been contemplating Canon's newer 85mm F1.4L because it's stabilized, or Tamron's 85mm F1.8 for the same reason (and to save a buck). But ultimately it's a really fun challenge and pursuit to find the gear that works best for ya :)

      I'm planning to sell my crop at the moment not sure what camera I'll want as a back up or if this rp will some day become the backup. I was thinking about getting the RF 35mm have you used it? Oh no that's sad news for the 85mm.. the RF 85 options are very expensive but I know most people say it's best to stay native so if I can afford any that'll be my plan.

    Great vid. Still stuck with the first world problem of getting the RP or shelling out for the R. I think the R will fix your noise issue. But can't see much else lol

      Southern Charity even at iso 12500 my R doesn’t have too much noise, I love it

    I want an eos RP but not small! Don't know why entry level camera means a small camera :/ like X-T30 Fuji. I need a cheaper camera with decent bodyt size. THis RP is the most affordable modern FF mirrorless, but the limitation from the factory are so dissapointing, just marketing with damage final customers. They can do it but they don't do it and you get an "halved" camera body not only for the size, but expecially for the functions. Firmware solved banding problem when increasing exposure even at base ISO? (dustin abbott video)

    Ordered one from Adorama. They refused to inform me that the EF eos r adapter is on backorder so I guess I’ll just be staring at my camera and lens until I can actually use it.

    Hey, thanks for the review. Do you know if there is a way to map the in body crop to some button so that you can switch back and forth quickly?

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  5 років тому

      I don’t thiiiink a single button can do it, but I have it saved on the custom menu so that I can do it in 2 or three button presses. I would love it if I could do it with one button

    Download an NTFS file reader app to your Mac and it will allow your Mac to open raw files. That’s what I have with mine and it opens cr3 files from my R perfectly fine!

    so all EF full frame canon lenses work with an adapter?

  • @legin6487

    But how does the EF lens work on the RP ? Because the R lenses are expensive as hell

    • @PAD32
      @PAD32 5 років тому +1

      They work perfectly, the only downside is that your lens get longer with the adapter, compared to a native RF lens. I'm waiting for tamron and sigma to give us affordable RF lenses :-D

      What's already been mentioned here-- absolutely perfect adaptation. I did have a small issue with a Tamron lens giving me a weird circle, but I discovered that it was some kind of distortion correction setting that was glitchy

    I am such a Canon fan but every EOS RP review just discourages me as a videographer. All reviews claim this is not a videographers dream camera. I do not wanna change to SONY or FujiFilm... noooo
