Learned that "better first in a village then the last in a city" lesson long ago. When I finished university, I had to do my duty to the country and went to serve in the army. Lot of people I knew had "connections" and got to serve in some places near Belgrade in some "posh" units like e-surveillance or air defence. I had no connections and so I got to go to the other side of the country next to a DMZ (which always spells trouble) in mechanized infantry. As soon as I got there, I found out that 9 out of 10 conscripts that served in that brigade had criminal records and did time. Also, majority of NCOs and commissioned officers had been previously demoted for some reason or another and were transferred there as part of their punishment.
I had time of my life there. I was one of few people that were tech savvy back then. Computers were not yet a thing among general population. Mobile phones had just made an appearance. All those C and NC officers there were people that had a lot of combat under their belt but with no knowledge or training in computers. Heck, I worked with a major that slept in his tank for 6 months on the front line but couldn't type a sentence on a keyboard. I digress. Very soon me and couple of guys that knew a lot about computers were running the show for them. We had a great relationship with all officers there, and we remained friends with them even today. Just seen my former captain year ago when I went to the town where he lives, on another business.
What happened to those people that I knew and that had "connections" and went to serve in some "nicer" places? They went to the units where they were just one of many and ended up being regular troops just waiting for the entire thing to get over.

Happy belated birthday Blair. I am sorry about your break up ( you are loved) and again so good to see you happy in Belgrade. Another great video. Really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. America is not kind to black women and all you said about America is the 100% truth. I hope you host some international meet-ups there as I would definitely attend.

On topic if Yugoslavia was better than democracy i should add:I was born in 2003 so i dont know what it was like but my dad told me it sucked,it was poverty inequality and class difference was more apparent than ever, sons and daughters of high ranking officials and communist party members had more privilages and opportunites than common Serb like my dad was.Situation now is not as bad but we need changes and we should support students protesting.

Only communists remember Yugoslavia favourably. My grandad was tortured multiple times because he celebrated slava and many of our priests and their families were killed by communists and even that is just scratching the surface.

You seem like a nice person but you don't understand living in Serbia at all. 🤣 At least for now, maybe you will understand it one day. But for that, you have to start living from the bottom, like you started in USA. Serbs in Serbia feel like you in the USA, that's the best explanation I can give you. 😀

And it kinda suck that you as spirited person dont understand people protesting on streets, very ignorant statment about starting a bussines, like what all 6 millions citizens should be bussines owners who is going to work then?Who is going to grow crops, clean streets, serve food, work on maintenence jobs?Like i kinda liked your channel and everything but this was outrageous and ignorant.

One of my first jobs out of universities was working on a goat cheese farm, where I rolled the cheeses, and 3 days a week I drove a big pickup truck to sell the cheese at various farmers markets. The farmers were really nice people and shared how hard it was to find workers, and the couple didn't have kids, but a niece who would inherit the farm. Farming taught me so much about business, customer service, cash flow, being organized, sales, inventory, and more.
While all 6 million people can not start a business, there are jobs that many people don't want to do. The other day, I saw 2 Indian workers working in the grocery store. There are more immigrants working unglamour jobs like bus drivers, cleaners, cooks, waitresses, factory workers, garbage collectors, and more. As a country gets richer, people are not willing to do certain jobs.
Most Serbs I've met have some kind of side business to supplement their income. Real estate, online shop , etc.
So it's not unrealistic to say start a business because many universities are not preparing students for the rapidly changing and competitive job market. Even professionals with experience, licenses, and degrees are having a hard time finding work. As a former teacher, I always pushed my students to tap into their creative and problem solving skills.
A business is simply solving a problem. Want food, open a grocery store, a restaurant, a food truck, grow food, etc.
We can not all be job seekers, and with AI, that is disrupting whole industries, a degree, and experience will not protect you.
I hope you continue to watch, and understand.

@@blairinbelgradeTV Serbia has its entrepreneurs and unlike America has its middle class,we are not doing bad and protests are not about economy, its about corruption, its about emphaty and looking out for each other, any of us could have been under that roof and we have to fight for justice and institutions to work their jobs.
