Just so heartbreaking I could cry so easy To hear all theses great players just almost owing their lives to Chicks musical gifts that he blessed all of us with is so sad now that he’s passed away RIP Maestro
The Electric Guitarist album is probably one of favourite we use to play it in high school all the time and yes it was a double interview ... excellent Gary RIP Chick
"I don't know if it was in my blood but it was in my kitchen" This is such wonderful discussion, the legacy behind these two artists is immense. Such an honor to be able to hear this conversation. Thank you for posting.
Holy smoke! Gary! Chick is correct when he said "No one else in the world like you...piano and drums" virtuous on both! Thank you for posting this interview!
I always felt like Gary Husband was so under appreciated. NO MORE. We hear it here from a legend. Not even Chick Corea knows anyone else at this virtuoso level on TWO instruments. Brilliant stuff here. Beautiful really. Cheers Gary!
True, except I suspect Chick forgot Jack DeJohnette. I even think DeJohnette is a pianist major who ended up playing drums (although I'm not sure about that). Naturally, Gary is also one of these fantastic musicians who can play both at high levels, brilliant stuff, I love his work.
True I'm for 16 years I still found that chic corea is an amazing miraculous rhytmic master in his solo.s him and bill evans is my most learning sources of playing great music. Thank you 🎹🎹🎹
Amazing interview. I had no idea Chick ever lived in my home state of Massachusetts. How amazing is that. I've been a fan of him for 40+ years. Being that I played drums for years, Dave Weckl has been my #1 drummer for as long. It's great seeing two amazing musicians like Chick and Gary talking shop. Thank you, Gary, and Rest easy, Chick. You are missed.
That drum introduction on 'The things you see" from the IOU album changed my life forever...so musical, so magical....Thank you Gary! What an inspiration you are...
You are so welcome, Gary. You are a rarity in contemporary music and hope the world appreciate what you have done with your drumming and your piano. Moreover, your modesty and how you listen to Chick says it all about you as an artist. I really changed my outlook on the drums so differently after I listened to the Metal Fatigue and IOU. So free, yet so controlled. Thank you, Gary for all those beats. Waiting for your Opus Magnum on the piano.
This is such a beautiful exchange between two absolute masters! I met Chick about ten times and he was (and is, as the body is only the vessel for the being!) the loveliest guy!!!
So lovely to see this Gary, a touching memory of the trail blazing musical titan that was Chick, he will continue to be in the hearts of those who love him. In the same way I was so utterly bereft after Allan's passing, I feel the same in relation to Chick, as he too formed the soundtrack to my life. I am of a certain age where I grew up in that incredible era of the mid 60s to late 70s, and Chick was one of the master architects of this genre shattering music. Thanks again Gary, and RIP the timeless Chick Corea.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it’s colossal to lose Chick for all his many, many friends and admirers. He was really a big beast of music for all of us in my generation. Allan Holdsworth too. But I have lost many big beasts who I was extremely close to now - the passing of Jack Bruce was and still is considerably felt. Their ways, messages, philosophies and respective contributions must live on and serve all of us carrying on in this music. And we carry on. Just as they did, but with all of them in our musical heart and imagination. That was one of two massively enjoyable conversations with dear Chick. The Lockdown Throwdown duet though was such fun, for both of us evidently. That was special since he was so important to me in my early years too, but had also become a very dear friend. Thanks again for writing 🎈
@@GaryHusbandKeyboardsandDrums My sincere pleasure Gary, and you continue to carry the torch, for which all us improvising music fans are grateful. Btw on a separate note, I loved what you did with Steve Topping also, and so wish Steve would put out more material in that vein as he seems relatively quiet of late. And finally, I hope you have forgiven me for my saying, whilst I respected Tony Williams' achievements and talent, I did not enjoy him?! :-) A youthful and foolish comment I posted many years ago on the Fusenet forum, but at least we both agreed we loved Narada! :-)
Great conversation Gary. And, I’ve you to thank now for hearing Do you hear the voices you left behind. They all take some mighty rides on that song. Good lord, the Rhodes solo🏅. Jack is really on fire.
Such a beautiful exchange of two musical Masters inflecting on the subtleties of phrasing and how the power of rhythm translates over different styles and players techniques . These are not always the types of conversation we get to listen in on which makes it a really valuable treasure for anyone who truly loves music . A beautiful tribute to Chic also 🙏🏻 thanks for sharing this personal moment with us Gary .
Chick: "The piano is 88 drums with 10 sticks" ...hilarious!...IMHO, this is one of the most inspiring videos I've watched recently. Chick was very busy during the lock down and used social media well. I'm thankful for that! RIP! Gary Husband is a jazz/rock power house, I was always amazed by his drumming. When he started playing keys, I was really blown away...because he kills on keys too!!!. I love how easy two musicians can speak with each other. Music runs deep! Thanks for the upload Gary Husband!
Two of my heroes.. What a lesson in humility from you two! Without you, I would probably be worse off as a musician. I learned a lot from both of you and I still continue today. Thank you very much for all the great music. Sincerely, Yvan.
Chick's inner light came through his music. He was such a positive creative force. I love Husband's writing and playing, too. My favorite pianist: Bill Evans. My favorite drummer: Al Foster. There are plenty of greats, though.
I came here because Gavin Harrison mentioned Gary Husband in one of his videos but I stayed because I got fascinated by Gary's playing. Mr Husband you are off the charts talented!
Two masters and two of my favourite musicians Gary’s work with Alan Holdsworth and John M incredible musician, and Chick Corea the grand master I need not say anymore thank you both for inspiring me to this very day 🙏🏽
Two luminaries. So sad we lost Chick. Seeing these two perform were amongst the most meaningful musical moments of my life thus far. I had occasion to speak with Gary back when he toured with Allan Holdsworth. What a gift that was. Glorious innovators here. Blessings Gary. You are a genius.
Wow. Thanks so much. With all the negativity of Corona, it is a blessing to see so many extraordinary musicians online discussing philosophies and motivation. When we get through the end of this thing there is going to be an amazing catalogue of incredible conversations.
've been following the amazing musical journey of both of You for so many years now and seeing - listening to this conversation is a gift for me. Heartfelt Thanks to You both.
Thanks so much Gary for this lovely conversation! I'm still at a loss of Chick'ss passing! Having grown up for 11 years in India (my dad was a diplomat), Trilok Gurtu became a good friend during my last years there in our teens and with the environment we found ourselves in, I started listening to many different types of music while playing bass by ear. Only a year or 2 after my family and I left, I first heard "Light as a feather", and the world of music seemed to suddenly reveal itself as becoming exponentially bigger, and led me effortlessly in to so much more! I was just watching the 1986 live video of his electric band ('Got a match?"), and noticed yours on the right! Glad I did! :) All the best from Germany, where I moved to after 38 years on Manhattan 5 years ago for the love of a good woman! There's always a woman involved! :) Your video was wonderful! There's nothing like a good conversation, especially when it becomes music in itself! :) Stan
Hi Gary - this is a wonderful discussion with Chick. Really enjoyed it, and especially because you both touch on topics that are not often discussed. Very insightful to hear you both discuss different time feels (strict versus more free). I don't feel quite so bad, when listening to your recordings with Allan Holdsworth and not being able to find 'one' in the middle of the tune!
Great exchange and in the light of Chick Corea's recent passing, such a great record of his recent mindset and how he felt about music! I thought it was particularly interesting when you were both talking about how crucial rhythm is in music performance and that's what gave you the extra energy/ inspiration to play phrases. I always think the fusion movement has kind of abandoned (or perhaps unrealised) the place with the most rhythm, Africa itself - the diaspora countries created great music but that's still not Africa. Maybe it's the perception that the music is not melodic enough. When Chick said that he'd bought a marimba it really made me wonder if he'd listened to or would soon discover Zimbabwean music because I'm sure he would have loved it! If you Wikipedia "Shona Music" there's info about Thomas Mapfumo and others who used melodies originally from mbiras (kalimbas) - but rhythmic and melodic interplay on marimbas and guitars is incredible. I was involved playing bass in some of this music in the UK a few years ago and it was really hard to solve the old problem - where's the one??! It makes sense hearing that you and Chick had musical parents - I think people need to absorb it at some point very early on to create such a natural fluency in something. It’s amazing for example to see this young kid coming through now, Justin-Lee Schultz, father is a jazz guitarist…
Really beautiful and interesting conversation between 2 monsters about love and passion for music. Thanks Gary. I met you once backstage in paris during allan holdsworth atavachron tour. Allan was such a nice guy and monster musician. I really miss him.
Great insight. Flowing conversation and not getting hung up with knowing what will come out of it. Gary and Chick just had a cool duet. Fantastic thoughts about the rhythmic concepts of different music. Even in the early blues, soloist would sometimes add or drop a beat or bar. It's the feeling and not a number system. Tight rhythm is exciting as well. All is good, just let it go and flow and listen is the best.
What an incredible exchange of concepts and ideas. Two truly great musicians’ simply mutually respecting each other. Thank you so very much for posting this. 🌞🙏🇬🇧🌞
Gary your at the top of a league that is so rare. To master both piano and drums at such a high level astounds me. I’m one of the drummers for Lyle Lovett and Acoustic Alchemy plus play piano a little. You are truly one of the most talented and greatest musicians I have ever seen. Cheers

Anyway, great to hear you and Chick talking. Best wishes.
Great discussion, but I do have one remark. There are more musicians who are very good on two instruments at the same time for example Django Bates, another great musician from England who plays piano and Eb peck horn , both on a high level or Kirk Covington who plays Drums , Keyboards and he sings. And i am sure there are more. But this is very inspiring two of my all time favorite musicians in discussion.
Many thanks! And hey it wouldn’t be anything I would argue Erik. I’m well aware of many artists who have second instruments for sure, and as long as each of those instruments are neck-and-neck in terms of being both developed simultaneously and both as principal avenues of expression, then I guess I would have that in common with them. I think Chick’s point is that perhaps a majority don’t. More common the case one is the principal focus - as in “the one” - and the other a very proficient second. 👍
