I’ve been thinking about this. I think he’s the greatest all time at naturally combining all intense styles up to the late 70s, all that modern classical/jazz styles he can do. He doesn’t do the new-soul stuff, anything EDM or top 40, easy listening stuff etc., so he’s not overall the most versatile musician, but for quick thinking stuff he might be top dog. Cory Henry competes, but enough of his phrases feel pre-fab, like he isn’t QUITE just improvising at the intensity as chick. Cecil Taylor is more intense, but not anywhere near as versatile, and to my ears it doesn’t sound like he’s really quite hearing it all, like he’s attached to intense at the expense of it really coming from within.
This was one of the best interviews on music production, music thought, music improvisation that I've ever heard. Cudos to Mitch Gallagher for asking such insightful questions based upon his homework on Chick Corea. Great interview.
Honestly, it's pretty messed up. They are glorifying a woman who wanted to skin puppies for clothing. The trailer looked lame too. Like a direct to DVD movie.
I had the pleasure of hearing Chick Corea play King Kong with Dweezil Zappa in Seattle. I've been a fan since, as a little kid, I borrowed Now He Sings, Now He Sobs on vinyl from the public library.
A very thoughtful interview. I missed the video when you originally uploaded it but thanks to the UA-cam algorithm, it was suggested to me this evening. RIP Chick.
Chick is just an unbelievable talent/genius/phenomenon/all of the above. His impact on Jazz and even mainstream music is just another aspect of him being a great human being. I admire how he reaches out to younger players and completes the circle, being inspired by those who grew up listening to his music. Check out his duet dvd (part of "Rendezvous in NY" dvd set) with Rubalcaba, un-freaking-believable!
I was 15 when I first heard Hymn of The Seventh Galaxy. That began my journey with Chick. Don't know the man's spiritual life, and I won't judge. I just know that his life in Eternity would greatly contribute to life's blessing with his presence and other great talents.
