Back than we had PCI gpus likes of Riva 128 (that had 4 MiB of sgram on it - yes mega not giga) why on earth would that game not run smoothly on any hardware from recent years?
There is a brand new expansion that launched with this called "Call of the Machine". It was made by industry veterans with modern tools and whatnot. It feels very nice to play. This expansion alone is worth the 10 dollar price tag.
The new "Expansion" was handled by Machine Games (the guys who are owned by Bethesda and do the current Wolfenstein games, I think they're doing that Indiana Jones game too from memory) they also did new expansions for the Doom 1/2 and Quake 1 Remasters as well.
Quake 2 on Switch looks exactly the way I remember from PC. You had to have a 3dfx card, but yeah it looked like that. The models now animate smoother and you have anti aliasing, but the textures are identical, which is good. It's basically done just like Quake 1 remaster. All in all, perfect, love it! RGT, the textures weren't upgraded at all, but we have linear filtering there, just like on 3dfx, so it's kinda smooth. But that's okay.

Whats more exciting, is we get 2 entirely different versions. N64 Quake 2 had entirely different levels, is was not the PC version. Nintendo felt people wouldn't buy it due to the fact most people had already played it on the PC, and therefore wouldn't be willing to shell out more money just to play the same thing again. Kind of surprised you didn't play Quake II on your X360. I don't know 100%, but the copy of Quake 4 had Quake 2 bundled in as a freebie. At that particular time it was considered the best version of Q2 due to the power of the X360 providing fluid 1080p/60fps game play and improved lighting. Quake II was my fave game to test my PC’s graphics in the 90s. Such a solid experience!
The lighting was shocking when this came out on PC. I vividly remember being impressed by watching the default pistol's glowing round going down the hallway, lighting it up as it went. I want to try the PS1 port (at some point) as that is considered an impossible port of Q2.
