Geoff's lowest note in this is actually a B0 (that low drone right under J.'s opening vocal line). Including subharmonics, his range is right about 5 octaves- you still haven't heard him go high yet.
With regards to their video production, as well as anything else- they always post credits with the video which will tell you a lot about how they do this work. As someone else has mentioned, it's mostly them, as they are a 100% independent group. If you want to hear a really fascinating arrangement- and with Spooky Season coming soon!- you ought to check out their cover of In the Hall of the Mountain King. Yep, the one by Grieg. Another video where they go hard, and the vocal arrangement itself is one of the most creative, unexpected things you'll ever hear.

@@throga With VoicePlay, no, because they tend to showcase each artist more or less equally. The closest I think you come is their cover of Oogie Boogie's Song, from Nightmare Before Christmas, which features Geoff as the lead, of course. But if you really want to hear him, he does have a solo channel, and I'd recommend his cover of I See Fire, or his cover of Blackbird. And just a heads up- Geoff goes just as hard on his videos as VoicePlay does, and he's also doing all his own vocal arrangements (he and Layne share this job for VoicePlay). He also mutlitracks his vocals, and clones himself in video. You'll see. 😉
*Blackbird is an earlier video, so he's not going quite as hard there, but considering he was shooting it in his home during the pandemic, with his wife as his crew (not too unusual; Kathy is his and VoicePlay's production manager, and she does a little of everything), so in that light it's still fairly impressive.

@@throga Geoff's I see Fire definitely shows off his range the best. He still goes higher and lower in other songs than in that one, but not in the same song. My very favorite thing is finding reactors seeing/hearing Voiceplay for the very first time. They are absolutely magnificent.
Eli created the backgrounds and they used giant LED screens. They do every genre, and do it brilliantly.
Totally independent, no label, no manager. They've considered that, but then would lose their ability to create what they wish.
For Geoff's full range, I'd try their Little Mermaid Medley. It was pre-Cesar, sorry about that.
They lost their high tenor in early 2020, he left for undisclosed personal reasons and has not been replaced. Eli has moved into "hold my beer" category of tenor. J None was with them from 2018 to 2021 when he was recruited by the US Navy to sing with them. Just promoted and transferred from the Pacific Northwest to DC. Cesar replaced him.
They are still one man short and used featured artists on a regular basis.
Their arrangements are usually done by either Geoff or Layne, trading off month to month. Eli has been collaborator for a few and has done two himself. Eleanor Rigby and Creep.
When you get to Geoff's solo work, his most recent is Folsom Prison Blues just after he did I See Fire.
Pick anything, it doesn't matter for Geoff and Voiceplay, you will love it. Trust me.
    Also, pre-Cesar - Tennessee Whiskey.

Dollars to donuts I bet they're keeping J's spot open until he's discharged from the Navy... the good side in the meantime is that we get to enjoy a whole lot of featured artists :) Every single feature they've brought in has blended so well with them, you'd never know they're not full time members of the group

Miracle Of Sound messaged Voice Play and told them it was the most creative cover, well done lads, I raise you 10 alehorns out of 10. That is the highest compliment you can give someone. Geoff spent many hours ( wrecking his voice ) as he calls it to help him sing even lower. The air conditioning wasn't working in studio they were in for the shoot . That & the heavy clothing they were wearing made for an unbearably hot day. Now that is true dedication.

Welcome to the world of VoicePlay. You obviously know of Cesar before this.
Another song where Cesar really shines is in their rendition of I Can't Make You Love Me.
Miracle of Sound who composed this gave VP 10 out of 10 alehorns for creativity.
Geoff hits B0 thrice, first time holding it 15 seconds.
The sound of the creaking door as JNone enters is all Layne.
Listen to their cover of Halo. The composer of that almost drooled over their efforts as he guested The Charismatic Voice. Cesar is singing the part he sang himself when he composed it. Be careful to listen to the whole outro with Scott Porter, a former original member, back for that performance.

Geoff does 3 sustained B0s in this. The first one is a 14 second B0 subharmonic. Eli (rhymes with jelly) is the bald high tenor also known as the rock god. Cesar also has a lovely range and a lot of versatility with it (listen to I Can't Make You Love Me). Layne makes amazing vocal percussion - and is also a classically trained violinist as well as having a beautiful voice. Not that he shares it much with us - twice in 3 yrs in Warriors (Imagine Dragons) and Nothing Else Matters (Metallica) but he has earned the moniker of VioLayne in addition to the Carrot Lord. He loves to tease J None with those carrots. J None was the baritone until the US Navy made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He's in the middle of a 5 yr stint and just got an upgrade that moved him from the Pacific Northwest to Washington DC. He has been coming when he can to keep his hand in. Friends on the Other Side was right after bootcamp, early this yr he came for Nothing Else Matters (Metallica). I heard people say you can't do Metallica as an a cappella at least until they heard VoicePlay. He was also here for In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins). Geoff has a 5 octave plus range. A0 growl, B0 subharmonic, F1 full chest, Bb5 is new in the mini Peaches. You can pick anything of theirs and it's marvelous but it seems like the last 2 yrs has put them in a class by themselves. VoicePlay has no contracts, they keep their creativity under their control. Usually Layne and Geoff swap out the production of the upcoming video, from arranging, audio, camera work, staging, costuming, makeup, pre-mix audio (Ed Boyer does the final mix for all the top a cappella groups). Eli did the arranging of Eleanor Rigby and recently In the Air Tonight. He does all the lighting, green screens, computer generated backgrounds. Geoff's wife is the production manager.
The first music I heard on UA-cam was Geoff doing the Monster Mash. I had to hear more and found him in VoicePlay as they were doing Hoist the Colours. I fell hard into that rabbit hole. I'm hoping you will indulge all of us fans and grant us the rights to hear your first time on ANY of this group's music or Geoff's. It like taking someone with you that has never seen the Grand Canyon, the wonder is shared.

BJ, Thank you so much for this information. I found Geoff, then VoicePlay and I am in love forever. (The Hu are a close second still.) Geoff's voice and horsing around along with Eli's voice and character keep me watching over and over and over and over and over and over and ... well, you get the idea.
I am so lost on many things, like "Geoff has a 5 octave plus range. A0 growl, B0 subharmonic, F1 full chest, Bb5 is new in the mini Peaches." My 72 y/o brain is more along the lines of "I like a full chest on a man and love peaches, especially peach cobbler!"
Comments like yours give me ideas to look up and continue educating myself. Thank you again and hope to find more to read.

@@jalyc A0 is the lowest note on a piano, and B0 is the white key next to it. C1 starts a new octave and the notes C, C# or Db (same note for the black keys depending on the key that the song is done in (sharps or flats), white key again D, black key is D# or Eb, white key E and white key F is next, then black key F# or Gb, white key G, black key G# or Ab, white key A, black key A# or Bb, white key B, next white key C starts the next octave. This repeats all the way up the 88 keys with the addition of a number (as in A0 , B0, C1 etc.next C will be C2. Occasionally you will find people that will label the 2 sets of white keys together like so - white key B next to the white key C (no black key) so the B can also be called Cb and the C can be called B#, same format for the E and F no black key here either so E can be called Fb, and F can be called E#. Mostly folk only do that when they have an unusual key signature so mostly the folk you see on UA-cam just call them B, C, E, F.

A lot of what I want to say has been mentioned, but I just wanted to expand on it a bit.
The Viking video that came first for VP was My Mother Told Me. In that video, Eli also created the backgrounds the characters are in. However, it's more of a flat, 2-D kind of feel. Eli always said that if he got another chance, he thought it would be awesome to be able to see more of the environments, have a more 3-D type of feel. So when Valhalla Calling came around, he got to do just that. In My Mother and Valhalla, Eli used Unreal Engine, yes the software used to create video games, to create his environments. In Valhalla, VP were able to go to Vu Studio and utilize their space which could project Eli's environment creations on this giant led wall, and their special camera that captures the footage to look as though they are in a tavern, or on a cliffside overlooking an ocean. Some of the props and the tables were real, everything else was the 3-D environment. But, also, Eli then took that footage and he put it together for the final video.
Eli has also been learning for a couple of years now and doing the lighting for not only VP videos, but many of Geoff's solo videos as well.
As you found out from Cesar, the drum sounds are all Layne. He creates them, and yes, they use layering and after effects, but the initial sounds all come from him. There are occasions where they'll use a sound effect, like a low booming sound, but they are very open about that. Layne and Geoff usually split arranging duties, whoever arranges comes up with the video concept including set design and costuming. Also, the guys will put together the first pass of the mix for the song, but do send it off to Ed Boyer for final mixing. If they have more complicated makeup looks, like in this video (and honestly way more intense in other videos), they bring in Rick Underwood.
Geoff's solo channel is also amazing. One thing to note is that he does not do a cappella on his channel. He incorporates instrumentation to get to do something different from VP. However, all of that arranging and instrumentation is done by him. He can play piano but will use plug-ins for other instruments and sound design in his videos.
I'm looking forward 🤞🏻to more VP and Geoff reactions.

Eli (the tenor) did the backgrounds for this in Unreal Engines. It was then played on huge LED screens. Eli also does their lighting work.
Whoever arranges (in this case Layne) also is responsible for costuming, set, direction, video editing and all but the final vocal edit. (That goes to Ed Boyer, one of the best in the business for acapella. You’ll see his name on many PTX and Home Free videos also.). Rick Underwood usually does their makeup (when needed).
It’s not as theatrical, but I would suggest checking out Nothing Else Matters. You’ll get to see more of Layne’s hidden talents.

You need to listen VP’s Phil Collins cover of “In the air Tonight”. Cesar is fantastic (actually all of them are) and you will get Jeff’s sub harmonics and J.None’s smooth tenor/baritone and Eli’s rock god voice and finally Layne - beatboxer extrodinaire, tenor singer (very brief) he plays violin too.🥰

I would suggest you try Home Free which has an extensive body of work on UA-cam.
For one thing, their bass (Tim Foust) has a range of G0-A5. He helped Geoff expand his (Geoff's) lower register.
Austin Brown, the high tenor, has his own channel on UA-cam.
Adam Chance (known as Chance), the baritone/bass, has a TikTok channel.
Rob Lundquist, the lower tenor, is classically trained in opera; he and Austin have a rendition of Nessun Dorma on Austin's channel.
The last member of the group, Adam Rupp, is a world-class beatboxer and is a co-founder of the group

Yes, we are all waiting for him to get that last note... in the 4 years I have been following them, they have only gotten better. I especially love it now that they do not really have to stress about things, and can focus on the music. The last 2 years have changed so much for them.
By the way, both Geoff's "Jakes Lament" from Nightmare Before Christmas and Voiceplay's "Hellfire" from the Disney film Hunchback of Notre Dame have dropped... and they are both demonstrations of his absolutely insane range.

Actually there wasn't that huge a team, here; looking at the credits, I think they did have more help than is typical for their videos (which makes sense being that this one was especially elaborate,) but generally speaking, they do a lot of the production work themselves.

Many of Miracle of Sound's songs are inspired by Video games, TV shows, or movies, this. Valhalla Calling is inspired by Assassin's Creed Valhalla (and a later version inspired by the TV series Vikings). His original version of the song was released in 2021 I believe, and he's done a few variations of it, the most recent being a trio version (with Peyton Parrish and Eric Holloway) which went viral and inspired many performers to try their own take on it. VoicePlay's is probably the best cover I've heard, and MoS himself congratulated them on their performance.
Miracle of Sound has a rather large collection of songs and covers a wide variety of styles.

Pulling out the phone and casually calling cesear was kinda cool in the first reaction of yours i listened to (I may enjoy hearing people get baffled by Geoffrey/other bass singers)
Geoff Castellucci has a fair few awesome solo stuff, I would recomend his hobbit pairing (misty mountains and i see fire) he films multiple copies of himself and his clones play the same characters in both videos)
If you fancy checking out a slightly smaller group with insane bass check out the bass gang (4 bass singers, often featuring a guest in the song) They have tons of epic songs, if you fancy halloween content you can check out hide and seek (voiceplay also did that song) They did hooked on a feeling earlier this year with Tim Foust which was incredibly fun. I think the bassiest song is still mad world where they had Elliott Robinson with them. Each of the singers in the Bass gang also do their own solo work too, if you are the hunt for new people to listen to :)

Like many others, I recommend Geoff’s version of I See Fire to get the full effect of his range. A lot of people will recommend Oogie boogie from Nightmare before Christmas. He is channeling the original actor in that and the others are doing character voices. So it’s not the best representation of what they usually sound like, but it is amazing. That is the one where they first used in subharmonics in a video. It sounds a lot deeper than some of the ones we hear now I think because he started out so high and then dropped it down to an E1. My favorite slide is the one he does in Little Mermaid medley, a full three octave slide in one word.
Cesar requested that they do I Can’t Make You Love mMe and he was featured heavily and it’s heartbreaking as he is in their version of Creep which was arranged by Eli the rock god.
One of my favorites of Caesars is their cover of Bruno. You just really get to see his personality shine. Another good one was when he first joined and they did I’ve Got Friends on the Other Side from Disney’s Princess and the Frog for their spooky season release that year. It was pre-beard and he looks like such a baby. That one is interesting because there were four baritones involved in the production of it.
Layne was the original baritone before he switched to beatboxer. His spot was taken over by Tony Wakim who is now Layne’s partner in PattyCake Productions where they do a lot of their videos. He was behind the scenes in I’ve Got Friends, since they filmed it at PattyCake Productions . Dr. Facilier is played by J, who replaced Tony and was returning to the fold in Valhalla Calling on his first leave from joining the Navy. And the prince is played by Cesar rounding out the baritone quartet.
Subscribing in anticipation of more reactions to my favorite group and my favorite soloist. And you’re buds with Cesar so that’s an automatic sub!

  • @Gael4ce
    @Gael4ce Рік тому

Geoff is like two notes from falling off the bottom of the piano. 😊 You really should check out some of his solo work - he sings backup for himself because he has enough range to do four and five parts on his own. Folsom Prison Blues is the most recent release, but I love his takes on Sound of Silence and House of The Rising Sun. His solo stuff is no a capella.
The song was inspired by the video game Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla Calling, but not used in the game.
For some tracks that feature Cesar better, check out their covers of
    Aerosmith’s Dream On
    Radiohead’s Creep
    White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army
    traditional: Drunken Sailor
Layne is usually the one to credit for any percussion or odd noises - he did the creaking door in this vid - but Geoff steps in on occasion.
And glad y’all noticed Eli: many reactors new to VoicePlay get so mind-blown by Geoff they can’t hear anyone else. Eli is just a powerhouse of a belter; I love hearing him cut loose.
