When i was younger i loved “achtste groepers huilen niet”. Also anything from carrie slee book adaptation is fun
noo I can't stand them, the dialogue makes me cringe at times
I like that film to! I am duth.
That movie... Even the trailer makes me cry at this point😅
@@dingetje82 cringe, why? Is it old fashioned or un P. C.
oof, I have the book of that, which actually features pictures from the movie. I actually haven't seen the movie, but I have read the book multiple times. Jaques Vriens is a really good writer ˆˆ'
(Slight spoiler warning) I barely ever cry, but I swear Akkie's death hit me _hard._ I haven't had anyone close to me die of cancer, the only person I've lost was my grandmother due to a few different factors, but my grandpa on the other side of the family does have chronic leukemia, so yeah, it's a bit jarring sometimes
I think you missed Soldaat van Oranje, a true Dutch classic!
‘Simon’ is a great movie about two old friends reconnecting when one of them is diagnosed with cancer. It will make you cry but it is also funny and heartwarming.
‘De Aanslag’ is a classic.
And I also recommend ‘Minous’.
It’s a kids’ movie but it’s awesome.
De aanslag exactly
Wasnt that called Minoes? And was that not also not Carice van Houten?
@@GeorgeSaint666 yes and yes. Carice in a tree, swatting at sardines and talking with cats.
@@GeorgeSaint666 yes and yes 😁
Ik lees dat boek voor nederlands op school, ik ben nog niet echt ver in het boek. Blijft het zo saai?
Don't forget 'De aanslag' from 1986 (The Assault). Won an oscar for best foreign language film!
Same for 'Antonia'! :)
I find it funny when Hollywood uses the Dutch language in film and completely ignores respect for the culture and make some awful sounds, they think and say are Dutch.
And often using bad German accents. -_-
Same for me and I'm Irish I don't know how many times I have seen an American made film about Ireland where they don't even get Irish actors and the American actors completely butcher the Irish accent
Sean Kennedy america and Hollywood is just uncultured
@@philtoonen6338 it's just about money they are afraid noone will watch the movie unless they have a-list actors in them which is stupid but probably true unfortunately
@tamara oude wesselink most well known Irish movies are in English since only about 75.000 people are fleunt in Irish in Ireland out of a population of 5 million so it's a bit different than what happens with Dutch movies but I understand what your saying heel veel buitenlanders vinden het moeilijk om Nederlands uit te spreken.
Antonia's Line, Alles is Liefde, and Bankier van het verzet.
"Bankier van het verzet" give some real insight into Dutch culture.
As a Dutch film student, I feel like Dutch cinema really thrives in it's visuals and in it's sound. Most technical aspects in bigger Dutch films are well or great, but when it comes to story and acting, We don't have too much to offer yet. Every once in a while a film comes out which does these aspects well but the vast majority, which only gets bigger as the budgets get bigger, really lack in these departments which is sad to see. There are people like the comedic duo Rundfunk, who've made one tv show and one film now, who really experiment in all aspects and a lot of it is done very well. They make these almost surreal stories with strange stories and intentional over the top acting that, while not always great, can be really refreshning to see. They even take a more experimental approach to the visuals in their film, where they've given it all a very warm feeling and they use these fisheye lenses for extra comedic effect in close ups which just works so well and while they certainly have their flaws, they're much more exciting than any other Dutch filmmaker to me because they try stuff out and they really have their own voice instead of a studio's voice.
Karakter is one of the best Dutch films ever .
Please look it up !!
My thoughts exactly! Won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998.
Helemaal eens met de aanbeveling van "De Marathon".
"De Marathon" is currently included with Amazon Prime.
She saw it already she talked about it in a other video
To be honest the biggest dutch actor that made it in America is Carel Struycken, best known for Twin peaks, The Adams Family, Men in black and mr Hom in Star trek.
He is the biggest, because he stands 213 cm tall. :)
A man in a smiling bag.
Not the biggest anymore. We got a 218cm actor now in Hollywood🤪 Olivier Richters

The Lift---- Amsterdamned also good movies
I'm suprised i havent seen "Amsterdammed" in the comments yet. Its from the 80s so not the best special effects but a good thriller/horror. The plot revolves around a serial killer who uses the famed canals of the Dutch capital to murder random people, one of which involves a detective's girlfriend linked to the murders. Especially the opening scene is pretty well done.
Yes. Canal boat tours got a new meaning. Sint was funny too.
I used to work in that building, top floor. It was quite interesting :)
As I kid I loved the Dutch film "Abeltje" (even though it gave me an irrational fear of elevators flying through the roof or falling down 😅)
Some other (Belgian) movies that I enjoyed and/or left a mark:
- "Black" (Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah)
- "Belgica" (Felix van Groeningen)
- "The Broken Circle Breakdown" (Felix van Groeningen. Warning: do not wear mascara and bring a handkerchief)
- "Hasta la vista" (Geoffrey Enthoven)
For Dutch nonsense comedies, watch 'Flodder', 'Schatjes' and 'Mama is boos'.
Pure Eighties 'Gold'! ;-)
Hey, don't forget New Kids Turbo
(warning: It's a very... _special_ kind of humor.)
@@Litl_Skitl Amsterdammed hoort in dit rijtje
@@Litl_Skitl That's not exactly eighties gold, is it?
Wat zien Ik en Keetje Tipple zijn goede filmpjes ook
Oh those are great!
There’s a Dutch remake of De Loft from 2010, cinematography looks identical to the Belgian original!
The first Dutch Netflix Original movie called “Forever Rich” is currently in production (I believe they’re expecting to finish filming this February).
Movie is set to be released somewhere this year so look out for that one on Netflix😊
I'll always have fond memories of the 90's chess-based movie "Lang Leve de Koningin" with Monique van de Ven as the titular queen. As for other dutch-language films I can recommed the flemmish film "Ben X" (which has an amazing title if read correctly)
:O Lang Leve De Koningin! Wat een herinneringen dat ik daaraan heb! ♥
Plot Twist: this video was shot at Burgers Zoo 😂
Pietje Bell is such a fun children's movie! It's about a boy with a very strong carakter, he is always joking around and making a mess.He builds a friendship with a poor boi in the time of recession. It's just a really cute and funny story!
michiel de ruyter is also quite good, tells the story about him and how he basically saved The Netherlands
That is one I wanted to recommend as well. :D Really love that movie.
Not related, but wanted to share it anyway. Looking forward to see "De Slag om de Schelde" as well (even more after I discovered each involved nation speaks its own language, which should be interesting for all who like languages).
@@TimvanderWeyden omg yes I also recommend that in the comments. I saw a filming set for it in Amsterdam a year ago, ever since I am so excited for it
A few more Honourable mentions:
Jan de Bont (Cinematography and director of Speed & Twister)
Jeroen Krabbé (the Living Daylights, the Fugitive, and director of Left Luggage and the Discovery of Heaven)
Dick Maas (director: the Lift, Amsterdamned, Flodder)
Famke Janssen (actrice of X-Men fame and Goldeneye)
Famke Janssen is able to pronounce English perfectly, without any accent.
@@tmhc72_gtg22c A lot of Dutch people are, although it might sound more like American in some cases 🤣😂
I tried to get my hands on Amsterdammed but it proved super difficult so I'm still trying to find it somewhere but definitely on the list!
@@caseykilmore I managed quite recently to obtain the blu-ray version (Amazon.nl), it took some Google-ing to find it and dit cost me an arm and a leg because I wanted the BR, Widescreen, DTS, version 😬😬
I actually first saw Amsterdamned in high school.
They held movie screenings on the Aula and this was one of the first movies screened
@@caseykilmore You can find Amsterdamned on UA-cam, the quality isn't great though :) You can also rent it on Amazon Prime.
Oh, I forgot to mention: ‘Antonia’. Highly recommend!
Yep. Antonia directed by Marleen Gorris. Won an Oscar in 1996 for Best Foreign Language Film.
Really beautiful movie, I agree!
Spoorloos is another Dutch gem if you are into thrillers (the US remake The Vanishing really doesn't come close)
the dutch version is much better then the american one and it has an other ending
Yesss my favorite Dutch film for sure!
Also from a book, Het gouden ei, the dutch movie followed the ending in the book. The american version did not and should not be made.
Note that the remake was done by the same director! But I agree.
There’s actually also a Dutch remake of Loft. It’s very similar to the Flemish version.
Spoorloos (the Vanishing) is also a great Dutch movie
Twee van mijn favoriete films zijn:
Ciske de Rat (1984)
Soldaat van Oranje (1977)
When it comes to Germany and France dubbing about everything, it's not only about having a budget to do so. Things like Disney movies etc do get dubbed etc. It's just that we can't be bothered. XD
Funny though... I noticed when listening to dubbed movies, I often prefer the Belgium versions. But perhaps that is because I live in Brabant? Not sure. But in general I would still prefer the english version above all. Like Frozen, is much better in english.
@@GeorgeSaint666 yeah, original stuff is often better. Not always though, Idd say the voices used in the Dutch version of Spongebob fit better.
@@ETools. I realized we also can’t be bothered to dub certain theme songs in kids shows or (last) names. For example; spongebob squarepants. Ofc it sounds better in English but as a kid i didn’t know what it meant or Icarly’s theme song😂 meanwhile Germany has everything dubbed.
The first thing it tought was like “oh i hope zwart boek” is in here!
I'd like to recommend "Simon". It has plenty of funny bits, but overall a dramatic movie with quite a sentimental ending.
Similar, but of course different (and Flemish) is "De Helaasheid der Dingen"
Helemaal eens.
I really like that you decided to dabble into Flemish culture and dialect. I always love to see videos with people's first impression on the differences between Dutch and Flemish.
One film I heavily recommend is 'Bontekoe' which is about a boy joining a crew from the Dutch East India Company. If you want to see another Flemish film, I heavily recommend 'Daens' which is about the early days of Belgium's existence and how life was during the industrial revolution. Almost everyone knows the film and there are a couple scenes that are used as visual aid by history teachers.
One of the genres we excel in, are war resistance movies.
Bankier van het Verzet (Resistance banker)
Zwartboek (The black book) as you mentioned.
Soldaat van Oranje (soldier of Orange - also a very great stage musical)
Are definitely great movies. Very well acted and super thrilling and realistic.
Another one to watch is Bumperklever its a nice little thriller/horror about road rage.
Thank you for this video. I'm currently amidst learning Nederland. I just started. As a fan of cinema, I'm interested in watching Dutch films for learning the language in addition to studying film styles. I subscribed and look forward to watching your other content.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks!
wow, your Dutch accent is amazingly good
What a lovely, insightful external view on our film industry! Thank you!
I really love 'de surprise', very unknown I feel like, but very funny and a bit dark
different recomendations from what I have seen, in the category historical:
De Hel van '63
NOVA ZEMBLA
DE STORM
I really like some Dutch children's movies like: het zakme, minoes, in oranje, lang leve de koningin, abeltje en madelief: krassen op het tafelblad. And then also I like: de heineken ontvoering, lucia de b., all stars. And my all time Dutch guilty pleasure is New Kids Turbo.
I liked the children's movie "Finn" There have been some Dutch TV miniseries for children that I liked such as "Zeven kleine Criminelen" "Zenith" "Caps Club" and "13 in de oorlog" They can be watched on this site, which is the website of the Dutch public TV line-up for children: www.zapp.nl/ The site has hundreds of TV programs and movies. It also has "Het Sinterklaasjournaal" which Casey mentioned in an earlier video. A guilty pleasure can be the various "Welcom in/bij de ..." series.
For Dutch childrens movies I loved 'Pietje Bell' and 'Abeltje'
My absolute favorite Dutch film is the 1996 Academy Award winner "Antonia" (or, "Antonia's Line" in English) starring the superb Dutch actress Willeke van Ammelrooy. A must watch if you have not already seen it! Love your videos! Thanks for producing such great content!
I recommend the series "Oogappels". A drama series that revolves around several families living in the same town. Every episode highlights another problem/question regarding teenagers and raising them. The second season ended on a huge cliffhanger, I'm dying to see the 3rd season.
I would personally like to put in a word for TBS. The main person in the movie is played by a comedian, but you will forget that during the course of the movie, it's truly a great performance all around. The ending too really got me. Not going to give any spoilers obviously, but it's really a good movie. I own 1 Dutch movie on DVD, and it's this one.
I agree. Very good performance and a really creepy movie.
The Dutch being able to speak English on an internationally acceptable level is a rather recent thing.
In the 1980s, my English teacher said to me that his generation were never taught or trained to actually speak English.
So before the 1980s, Dutch speaking and understanding English at conversation level were a rarity.
I think you like the movie 'Simon' too with Cees Geel. It was the first dutch movie where laughing and crying was equally in the movie so it became the first drama-comedy. A new genre... Let me please know if you've seen it.
What about new kids? The pinnacle of Dutch film
Thanks, I got some suggestions from this that I had never heard of before.
I recommend watching 'Mijn Opa De Bankrover' and 'Michiel de Ruyter', but there is this old youth serie called 'De Bokkenrijders' which I also really loved!
Thank you very much for your wonderful views on our movies
What do you think about:
Brimstone by Martin Koolhoven,
Planet Beauty by Emma Westenberg,
Prins from Sam de Jong,
Vast from Rolf van Eijk,
Basic Instinct and Total Recall also from Paul Verhoeven (English spoken ofc.)
Alex van Warmerdam also made De Noordelingen / The Northerners
There is also 'Amsterdamned', by Dick Maas (not extremely amazing). He also made De Lift in 1983.
( The English langue is seen as quite important in dutch schools. Probably also because of historical connections, but it's also useful (for business etc.) to know an highly used langue when your langue is not spoken/used that much. )
But you might already know all these titles.
Anyways, have a wonderful day and a healthy and amazing 2021.
Kruimeltje! I recommend it, even if you need subtitles. A very charming story and very well filmed and acted.
The few foreign folms I've seen,
Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal...
La Dolce Vida...
Japanese The Seven Samuri...
French Beauty And The Beast...
I'm so happy I came across your channel, I can pursue a long-time interest.
Thank you ❤
Some recommendations (that you may already have seen): "Zusje", "Publieke Werken" and "Karakter" are all pretty good in my opinion.
I agree, publieke werken was great!
Karakter is a timeless classic
Hier nog een stem voor Karakter.
Ik heb die toentertijd met de hele klas gezien in de bioscoop.
Together with 'Daens' the best Flemish movie ever.
As a Dutch guy I never appreciated Dutch cinema a lot until I fell by accident in the TV business and through that in film. Because of that I became extremely appreciative. An American production or even a commercial here have so much more money to spend per minute than Dutch cinema and its rather creative how they manage to do all that with such small crews and budgets.
There are a few dutch movies that I missed in your list. The Oscar winning ones for example. From the top of my head there were seven or eight? 'Glas' 'Karakter', 'Deze kleine wereld'. 'Anna en Bella', 'De Aanslag'. 'Antonia' and 'Father and Daughter'. But there is also 'The Red Turtle'. Technically a Japanese production but totally made by the dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit.
And the latest hit in dutch cinema: 'De beentjes van sint-hildegard'. A bit challenging because it is in dialect so even many dutch speakers will need subtitles.
Ohhhh I'll have to check some of these out for sure!!! Father and Daughter broke my heart such a wonderful short film I loved it. Definitely should of got a mention actually. I've read a bit about Karakter actually but hadn't watched it yet before putting this together so now with another recommendation it will be moving it's way up my list :)) Which dialect is De beentjes van sint-hildegard spoken in?
@@caseykilmore Officially the dialect is Twents, a Dutch Low Saxon dialect. But even more correctly it's Almeloos. The main character is played by Herman Finkers. He made Almelo famous with the rhyme: "Het ene stoplicht springt op rood,
Het andere op groen,
In Almelo is altijd wat te doen."
I highly recommend you watch some his shows. Hilarious. As an introduction you may want to view his "oudejaarsconference". You'll love it... if you have not seen it yet.
ua-cam.com/video/R-1Ns0i-9ro/v-deo.html
Karakter, Antonia, and The Red Turtle, all highly recommended.
@@caseykilmore "Een maand later" (1987). It's a movie about 2 women with completely different lives changing roles for a month. It was made ages before the 'Wife swap' series became famous and I have a strong suspicion this movie was the inspiration for the TV-series featuring in the early 2000's in almost every country.
I am so grateful the Dutch system uses subtitles over the German dubbing.
Not just because, as you point out, it's where I learned most of my English; but dubbing is so immersion breaking, its almost comical.
When you next watch ET try saying 'E.T. telephoniere nach house' in the time it takes the puppet to say 'ET phone home' and you'll know what I mean.
I'm not a generally a fan of the genre, but Amsterdamned Is a slasher masterclass.
And if you wanna see the Dutch do Dickens, try Ciske de Rat
Finally someone made a video of Dutch Film Industry! Especially finally someone is taking about Mijn Bezonderere Rare Week Met Tess as I have seen it on KinoKino International Childrens Festival and it's fantastic film!
Afterlife is also a great Dutch film Spijit too ;)
While not actually a Dutch movie per se, I feel 'A bridge too far' deserves a recommendation.
Being mostly shot on actual location, it's about as accurate as a WW2 movie gets.
And it depicts events that considered pivotal moments in recent Dutch history.
and WW2 movies/docs/literature from a Dutch perspective in general, because so many of our idiosyncrasies can be traced back to those 5 years our country wasn't our own. Considering the timespan in our history, we spend an inordinate amount teaching it to our children. And we are almost religious in remembering. It's why everyone speaks English, because that certainly wasn't the case back then (Off course we also all speak German, but hey, no shame in hedging your bets). Hell, we chucked people out of planes for 60 years to honour a group of strangers that fell out of the sky one day bringing hope, only to die in route to aforementioned bridge. Understanding wat Bezet Nederland was, goes a long way to understanding the Dutch.
Simon uit 2004, en een ander nederlandse regiseur die in holywood gemaakt heeft Jan de Bont.
Simon is amazing
I missed Mariken. I really liked that movie. Kim van Kooten thought of it.
Thank you for this video and your opinions! not often do internationals recognize the diversity of Dutch cinema
My favorite dutch movie is: achtste groeperen huilen niet. And as a kid I also really liked Dik Trom
De Marathon was me fav movie as it was pure Rotterdams .
But Flodder , Amsterdamned , Snitzelparadise and Sint are movies too you must see .
Fun fact the man who plays Sinterklaas on TV also is playing in the film 'Marathon' and an 18 year boy in 'Flodders' his name is Stefan de Walle. Hij presenteert ook het TV-programma 'De vloer op' waar vele Nederlandse acteurs en actrices aan mee doen. Leuk improvisatietheater en een mooi Nederlands woord om te leren 😀
This site has episodes of "De vloer op" going back to 2006: www.npostart.nl/ It is easiest to find the show by searching for "De vloer op" on the homepage. There is also a program "De vloer op jr." with younger actors.
Funny how you halverwege overschakelt op nederlands. ;-)
Because I thought dat ze Netherlands wanted to leren? Grapje 😁
Also interesting to watch are the films Fanfare and Glass from 1958 by Bert Haanstra. Fanfare is a comedy about the rivalry between two music bands in a little village. And Glass is an Oscar winning documentary about glass production (with brilliant sound effects). Both are available on UA-cam.
Watch Taxi, it’s one of my favorite Dutch film.
Great review! I've been trying to find out more about Dutch film myself as well. Schneider vs Bax is another excellent one, from Alex van Warmerdam. And the classic Minous with Carice van Houten :) which people below also mentioned.
Most current Dutch movies are not that great, but there are some exceptions. You already mentioned 'de Marathon' and I also saw a short fragment of 'Zwartboek' in this video. These are in my top 3, along with 'Stille Nacht' (a thriller from 2004).
I’m not the biggest fan of Dutch movies but movies like Zwartboek, Soldaat van Oranje and Bride Flight were pretty decent. Also if you want to watch some romcom guilty pleasure type movies I would recommend Alles is Liefde, Alles is Familie, Toscaanse Bruiloft and Verliefd op Ibiza. They don’t reinvent the wheel but they are fun if you’re in the mood for it🤗
I think "soldaat van oranje" is also a must, loved the vid btw :)
Don't forget the movie 'Lek (2000)'. By now it seems mostly forgotten, but it is a really well made crime thriller. At the time the papers even joked about it for being too good for a Dutch movie. And more at world Hollywood level.
My absolute favourite Dutch films are ‘De Noorderlingen’ and ‘De Poolse Bruid’. Take a look if you have yet to, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
another fun thing is that in spiderman far from home there is a part where peter ends up in the netherlands.. and the part where he's in a jail with a couple of hooligans and those hooligans are actually well known dutch actors.. so when i saw that movie and recognized one of the actors from other movies i was like HEY I KNOW HIM ! a recent movie i watched recently that was dutch was: huisvrouwen bestaan niet on netflix.. it was funny.. another one i'd have to reccomend are movies like bon bini holland or pizza mafia oh and for older movies i'd have to say Lunatic.. there are two parts it's about a group of people in a mental institution all with their own odd problems.. one of them dr dolittle can speak with animals where as one of the others thinks he's an army general. it's an overall funny movie about a couple of oddballs running amok
In 1998 "Karakter" (Character) won the Oscar for best foreign movie.
Fun fact: originally the movie All Stars would have been the Dutch submission that year for the Academy Awards.
However the producer of All Stars believed that All-Stars would have no chance of winning and recommended to send in Karakter instead.
A very good Belgian movie that is also in Dutch (Flemish Dutch) and I absolutely recommend to watch is the movie "Niet Schieten!". It's a drama that is based on a true story and is about a terrorist attack on a store that happened in my hometown (Aalst) in 1985. It's a fantastic movie, but also really emotional...
Ohhhh this sounds interesting!! Loving all these recommendations the only tricky thing is trying to get my hands on them while I'm still in australia hahaha
@@caseykilmore Yeah, I get that... It is indeed gonna be pretty difficult to get your hands on one in Australia. But it's definitely worth it! :) Good luck! ;)
As a dutch person i was raised with De schippers van de Kameleon1 & 2, Pietje Bell 1 & 2 & Kruimeltje
Leuk dat het opvalt 👍🏼
Have you checked Rundskop/Bullhead. It's also in Flemish, but in a very thick Limburgish accent so be sure to use subs.
I came here to promote the international succes of the Flemish/Belgian movie industry! The film: Loft is translated in more then 25 languages. Bad boys for life was produced by 2 Belgians. Matthias Schoenaerts from Rundskop plays the lead in one of Netflix recent films the old guard.
I'd recommend 'De Kuthoer', translated to 'The Columnist' for the international market. I guess translating it literally would be too offensive? I think it recently came out in Australia? Not the best Dutch film out there but a funny absurd social commentary on social media. And as others already mentioned... Spoorloos, based on Tim Krabbé's novel 'Het Gouden Ei'.
I really enjoyed this video!! I am a film buff myself so I love to watch these types of videos. I saw someone mention it in the comments already, but check out "The Vanishing". It is a Dutch movie from 1988. I didn't know about the film until I saw a list of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films and all of a sudden I saw the title "Spoorloos" which is the Dutch title of "The Vanishing". I was like what the heck! haha. Then I watched it and now it is one of my favorite Dutch films. It was actually send in for best foreign language film at The Oscars, but was turned downby the academy because the film contained too much French dialogue :( Stanley Kubrick apparently said he found it to be one of the scariest films he had seen. He liked it so much that he cast Dutch actress Johanna Ter Steege (he allegedly also considered Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman) who played one of the lead roles in Spoorloos to play in his film "Aryan Papers". Eventually the production of "Aryan Papers" was ceased because allegedly Kubrick thought it would suffer commercially after the success of Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List".
Sorry for this long story haha, I just really like films. It would be awesome if you made a video about your favorite movies :)
There has also been a remake of the film in the USA. By the same director of the Dutch version, with a cast of Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock. Is good too, but has a different ending then the original unfortunately.
Dick Maas is also a notable director, who created several dutch classics such as Amsterdammed, Flodder, Sint and The Lift. The latter movie was one of the first dutch movies that was released internationally. It’s a horror movie from 1983 about a Lift in an office building that has a mind of it’s own. The lift engineer (played by Huub Stapel) is determined to find out what’s wrong this morbid machine. The movie’s style gives a dark, bleek look of the Netherlands in the early 1980’s, and it’s got eerie, spooky music. There also exists an english dub version of this film (done by american actors), you could go back and forth between the dutch version and the english version to compare the translation against the original.
If I'm not mistaken, the rights of De Lift were sold to an American movie company which made a remake that (I believe) takes place in New York and is called 'Down'.
Dick Maas's Amsterdamned is a masterpiece of schlocky horror and probably my favourite Dutch movie after Soldaat van Oranje
Just watched de Marathon it's really good, and it made me remember Flodder, which is always a good thing.
have you seen Spoorloos? It's not completely in dutch, a big part of it is in French, but it's amazing!! Thank you for your suggestions, I'm gonna try and get ahold of some of them to watch
'Mijn bijzonder rare week met Tess' is originally a book from the author Anna Woltz and even though her books are for children I still think they are amazing and someone looking to improve their Dutch by reading should definitely try them! Especially 'Ik kan nog steeds niet vliegen' and 'Honderd uur nacht'!!
What about Famke Jansen? She played in the X-men movies . And a lot more known movies
Ze is ook Bond-girl geweest
I don't think she ever played in a Dutch film though.
I was kind of bummed that you missed 'Turks Fruit', with Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven, released in 1973 and directed by the great Paul Verhoeven. In English it has gotten the title 'Turkish Delight' and it was rated X in other countries. But it is without a single doubt the best movie the Dutch film industry has ever produced. It is until today the most visited Dutch film in cinemas and that is so awesome, considering how controversial it was back when it came out. You should check it out!
Interesting.
I really liked Wildschut and Karakter
Maybe you would also like to see jachterwachter, I think it really represents a unique Dutch genre of commedy
Some of my Dutch movie favourites: De Lift, Het Schnitzelparadijs, De Noorderlingen, Aanmodderfakker and Sterke Verhalen.
Several of those movies are pretty recent and they are usually more fun than the "classics"
The Dutch filmindustry is alright I guess. But the industry for childrens films, I find, is very good here in the Netherlands. With classics as lang leve de koningin, kruistocht in spijkerbroek, de brief voor de koningin, koning van Katoren, Pietje Bell 1&2, de Kameleon-films, oorlogsgeheimen, oorlogswinter, Abeltje, Lepel, achtste groepers huilen niet (in English: Cool kids don't cry), and ofcourse all Carry Slee movies.
And almost all the kids I know have watched the newer movies as Mees Kees, de Boskampi's, De Groeten van Mike and Dummie de Mummie.
Oorlogswinter was shown in movie theaters in the United States with the title "Winter in Wartime" Achtse groepers huilen niet (Cool Kids don't Cry) is currently included in Amazon Prime. I liked "Het paard van Sinterklaas" I also found "Benny Stout" amusing.
I love Dutch films! I didn't know any of those on your list, so thank you. Some of my favorites are: Antonia's Line, The Northerners (or anything Alex van Warmerdam), Last Days of Emma Blank. Recently I discovered a great actress, Roberta Petzoldt who stars in Meet Me in Venice. She speaks tons of Dutch in that. ❤❤❤❤🌷
I've been trying to get my hands on the last days of Emma blank. That was also done by Alex van warmerdam wasn't it? I've got Antonia's line on my laptop ready to go 😊😊
@@caseykilmore Emma Blank was the first Warmerdam movie I saw. Maybe the first Dutch movie I saw. I had to watch it over again because at first I did not get it. Now I think it's hilarious.
De Noorderlingen... Saw it in the cinema
Simon (Eddy Terstal)
Is there a written list with the name of the movies? I couldn't understand some titles 🙈
Thanks for the video, I'm happy with the Dutch movies/series I've watched so far, specially The Resistance Banker, Riphagen, Undercover (although it's from the Benelux actually) and Toon (although this one doesn't have English subtitles on Netflix, so I'm not following it completely 😂).
Just updated the description now :)) This is so good being able to add all these movies to my list!! I've watched the start of Toon it's taking a while to grow on me but I'll definitely check out the other three also.
@@caseykilmore Thank you! From these, I like Toon the least indeed. But I think it gets better with time, and I also like the actor, I've seen other movies with him (watch Hotel Eindhoven in UA-cam!).
There is a new movie comming to cinemas called 'de slag om de Schelde' (or the Forgotten battle) it is the biggest Dutch production since Zwartboek and a collaboration with Netflix. It is a war movie and they speak Dutch, German and English in it. It is not out yet but will be when lockdown lifts.
Also I think because of the deal with Netflix it will also be released on Netflix worldwide after the premier
I also love the movie "Michiel de Ruyter". It is an epic historical movie about the live of Michiel de Ruyter. De Ruyter achieved great success as admiral over the war fleet of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands in the seventeenth century. It is a great movie and mostly historical accurate.
If you really want a dutch gem we all probably have seen as 90 and 2000 babies is "schippers van de kameleon "
I don't know a lot of Dutch movies, but I remember watching and appreciating Romeo (1990).
Someone in the comments has mentioned Minoes and I also recommend that. It's really lovely. Other films for kids I recommend: Abeltje and Blazen Tot Honderd.
If we're talking about tv shows, highly recommend Otje!
Flemish tv shows I recommend: De Dag, Studio Tarara and Leef.
"Van God los!" is also a good movie
I recommend 'Antonia', 'Van de koele meren des doods' and 'Soldaat van Oranje'. They are all classics!
