Ohhhh! I was wondering why the video quality was so weird, it's a ten year old video. Damn I guess I never really considered how long you've been doing this. Really glad you've been around for so long LGR, thank you.
urdnal right? i also kinda enjoy the more disjointed voiceover, and that it doesn't feel forced or faked too much... just someone barely not lazy enough to speak.
Oh man. I managed to convince my teacher to let me install this game on the classroom computer when I was in elementary school. We played this game during every indoor recess and break.
I know right?! Miss Makelski was like "ok but you gotta be quiet" ... then we come out of the underground tunnel and the damn spider is like right over us and everyone burst out giggling.
@@101Volts unfortunately had he waited til just '94/95 he would've paid about 1/4 that price. Hell, in 1996 he could've got a Maxtor HDD with double the space for still about a quarter of that. Unfortunately that's the cost of early adoption I suppose
Ground black pepper??? That's bullshit. You know what actually is AMAZING for repelling the ants? WD-40, PB-Blaster, or similar. I have no idea why, but ants will not cross over this chemical, even long after you've sprayed it. Works well outside too, since it's an oil and doesn't wash away easily.
Fun cheat from the PC version that I've never seen mentioned anywhere: if you lay your first egg off the screen (have your egg-end at the edge of the underground section, so that the egg lays off-screen), you're born as a second queen, which REALLY helps you out early on.
This game brings back unrelated memories: when I was 9 I saw it on the back of an issue of CU Amiga and that issue came with the demos of Borobodur and Harlequin, except no one told my 9 year-old self what a demo was and I thought the games were broken because they stopped after a while. You can't buy or pirate memories like these.
***** Yeah. Demos have been on sale since forever. It doesn't really happen anymore thanks to the internet, but magazines with demo discs were expensive stuff. Although on second thought people pay premium money for alpha builds of games today.
This review is excellent. I haven't watched any of your other ones but I just wanted to say the quality and depth is superb and greatly appreciated. Thanks.
"J. K. LOL" = best delivery ever. I used to play around with this game as a kid :P thanks for the nostalgia trip! you're videos are my favorite YT gamer videos (& PURoses, thanks for introducing her to me with your collabs!) so today I decided to go back and watch some of your old stuff :)
You make me want to play this game again. You made me realize how much I missed it. I don't even play RTS games anymore, but this one is just so appealing. Maybe it's the simplicity. Maybe it's the bugs. Maybe it's the fun. But it's probably all of those things.
Coolest review and episode of LGR I've ever seen! Things sure have happened! And I remember this game, had it for my Amiga. And this looks like a 4:3 VHS recording. Love it! :D
The whole thing about the guy in the plaid pants being an owner not a renter... kicking my legs back and forth giggling like a little girl. Your videos bring me such joy
It's trippy going back and watching an LGR video from so many years ago. Really dry, humorless and frankly not very entertaining speaking style compared to today when he's one of my favorite youtube content providers.
I was an IBM PC user back then, so I played "SimAnt" on Ye Olde IBM clone. One favorite move was to "take over a spider" and attack the red ant nest. (It wasn't too long before the spider succumbed to ant venom.)
When I played, the red ants kept up pretty well with my own colonies, leading to a lot of fighting that made the game take longer and presumably more fun.
Man I loved Sim Ant! Thanks for reminding me how fun this game was! I played the SNES version though. The only difference I can really remember is that instead of vomit sounds, when you got food from another ant your ant would say a little "thank you", which was cute. It's a game that doesn't sound like it'd be fun at all, but I thought it was strangely addictive! Nice review!!
I used to rent this game as a kid so much! The SNES version has a really great Scenario mode. 8 different maps to conquer, each with it's own unique memorable music and your goal is just to reduce the red ants number to 0. I'm still waiting for a Sim Ant 2... =(
Nice review. I also have fond versions of playing the Mac version of this game. I remember reading the entire manual, which was a great addition. This was from a time when the manual was as much a part of the experience as the game. Bring back cool manuals!
We’re getting to a point where looking at how long ago a video was posted is shocking. In a handful of months this video will be 15 years old. Fifteen years before this video was posted was 1994. Really puts things into perspective.
You should make an anniversary review of your channel with a revamped opening similar to this when March 2018 comes around. Your 12th Year Anniversary "LGR - Lazy Game Review Retrospective Review". :)
I'm so glad you changed the intro. this old one is pretty bad. especially that drinking pop and ahhh thing . but you have some amazing content, love your videos.
I was at primairy school when this released and a schoolmate had this game and played it on his dad's Apple Macintosh. I was intrigued not only by the game, but more so by the game manual, as it has (like shown in this video) a whole biology book about them. I've been borrowing lots of books about ants then to learn more about them. A couple years later I managed to get a copy of it for PC and play it myself, ....many many hours.
Its sad that I only ever had a manual / tutorial book for this game as a child but never played it lacking the software. For its age this game must have been amazing!
I remember this game being released... the local computer shop had ant stickers all over the floor. The 90s, where any game with 'Sim' in it was a big deal :-)
Sim Ant is a definite classic for sim fans. I remember playing this game at my friends house a lot. Though he had the DOS version and that was pretty good also. Great review phreakindee!
I played this one! I had the second box you showed. If you relax and work with it, you find how fun it is. I killed a spider once and that was glorious!
For the classic and the old 116 Macs we had of course the original sim city but also a sim pack full of things like sim farm and sim ant. Sim Ant got the most use, especially from my sister who loved insects. She is now studying to be a biologist.
There was a game in 2001 called "Empire of the Ants" that was along similar lines as SimAnt, with 3D graphics, though it wasn't as much fun to play from what I remember.
@Haloguydev I couldn't agree more. With more and more games being available digitally instead of retail nowadays this is going to become even more rare.
I had this game growing up. Only played it a couple of times though because the graphic death descriptions scared me as a little kid. I may need to go back and revisit it.
I had the Windows 3.1 version of this; it was mostly similar, although the music sounded a bit worse due to my sound card at the time. To put it bluntly, I got as much, if not more out of the manual, with the actual information on ants. Big manuals are kind of a lost art now...
you are right! I thought it was abandonware, but I always check with Home of the Underdogs site for abandonware, and they state its either still protected or was removed due to request of the owner ;)
This game really needs a remake. I had the DOS PC version and played it on a 286. The music did not sound good on an internal speaker, but I didn't care. I carried that manual with me everywhere, too. I was always jealous of the Mac versions of the Maxis games.
Played it on both PC and SNES. This was an awesome game back in the day, and beating the game to see you drive the owner, his dog and cat go insane was hilarious.
I know you recently reviewed the original Macintosh, but have you reviewed the mac you used in this video? If not please do so, it looks like the Macs we had in the primary school I went to in 1997. I really like the music and sound effects in this game a real lot.
I had the Amiga version, the sound was the same if your machine had at least 2MB of RAM, and if you played the Hi-Res version, the graphics were very similar too. I loved that game and would like to see a modern version today.
Wanna see me beat the entire game in about 10 minutes? Here!

Back then the game reviews really were lazy
Boy LGR really changed in 5 years.
TheStolken let's say 8 years
I actually really like how these old LGR (and some other earlier YT videos) look like they could have been community access cable shows from the 90s.
urdnal right? i also kinda enjoy the more disjointed voiceover, and that it doesn't feel forced or faked too much... just someone barely not lazy enough to speak.
Clint also seems more lethargic and tired in this era of LGR.
I can't get over that dubstep intro music
What is this? A SIMULATOR FOR ANTS?!
Simon Cadel Aunts or uncles, this game is for everyone!
A bee simulator ought to put a stop to that!
cool your jets, job
Yes, precisely
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Top shelf comedy.
12 years now!! And still going strong LGR.

2mb of ram required? well i'm out...
and 2.5 for colors...
16 colors? nope
In the early to mid 90s, my Father bought a 1 Gigabyte HDD for $1,000. It was a lot of memory at the time.

Get yourself some ant lions

"you can see [...] he's an owner, not - a renter."
Man the intro music for these videos was just the best. So grimy and weird; loved it.
+Derek N I feel like I undersold it. This is literally the best intro music I've ever heard.
+Derek N Check out Venetian Snares! That's the source of the intro
+Lazy Game Reviews You are officially my favorite reviewer ever.
Yeah I'm curious which Venetian Snares song it is. I looked through a lot of their music and couldn't find the introduction
I'm very late but the song is chainsaw felatio from the album filth
Fun cheat from the PC version that I've never seen mentioned anywhere: if you lay your first egg off the screen (have your egg-end at the edge of the underground section, so that the egg lays off-screen), you're born as a second queen, which REALLY helps you out early on.
Good to see the beginnings of an empire. Love you Clint

its amazing how different you talked here compared to the newer videos
I think I was like 6 when I first and last tried to play this. I couldn’t figure it out so I went back to SimCity 2000.
I like your intro so much better today than it was back then.
You make me want to play this game again. You made me realize how much I missed it. I don't even play RTS games anymore, but this one is just so appealing. Maybe it's the simplicity. Maybe it's the bugs. Maybe it's the fun. But it's probably all of those things.

I love the SimCity background music. Definitely feels appropriate for this video, and is a cool creative touch.
The commentary about the man mowing the lawn was extremely satirical. You sir should be a television show writer
My mom bought this for me in the 90s for our Mac Performa 550! I totally forgot about it and wanted to bring back some memories. Thank you
This could actually work as a modern game.
An ant empire simulator!
Watching this in 2024 is surreal.
I love the meta of videos about retro games finally maturing into being retro themselves. Retro-ception.
Thats what I used to love about games back then. The Manual was actually pretty interesting. Now a days your lucky to get a piece of paper.
