I recall 6th grade history.Band was before history,so of course I had my metronome with me.Suddenly, when we were taking a test,it turns on,and everyone started screaming because they thought I had a bomb.I tried to explain, but I couldn't be heard by the shrieks of innocent children. It was getting quicker,so they thought it was about to go off. They ran out of the room, and once everyone was outside I was able to tell them that it was a metronome.Yeah,I delayed the test by almost half an hour and no one talked to me for the rest of the day.
Lizzie Mackinnon also play with a full belly of something. Idk why but when im so full i cant bend over i play my flute super well. Just remember to brush or rinse
Tuner and metronomes are also apps and work well. :) Use a dollar bill for sticky pads. I go to fed ex and have all my music copied then immediately turn in the originals. For a couple bucks you have music you can mark up to your hearts content and if they get spills or torn, no biggie.
Ear plugs - not sure if you know, but you can get plugs that are especially moulded to your ears and have attenuators in them. Preserving original sound without distortions that foam plugs make. Usually they are called Musicians plugs, come in 9, 15 or 25 dB. Your local hearing clinic / audiologist can make them for you. :)
As a violinist, I also bring an extra set of strings. Because you never know, when a string or a friends strin breaks, and then they come in handy. (even though I carry the extra cheap one for the emergency. You know.. I doesn't have to be the extra expensive Prirastro Obligato for 72 EUR/ Set, if you can have a set for 2 EUR doing the same job.)
The embouchure is completely different--much smaller, and the pressure from shooting the air out is much much higher. The trick is to force yourself to switch frequently between flute and piccolo during your practice sessions to train your embouchure to switch between the two. You're not the first to ask me this question, so this is going on my list of videos to make. :)
I'm a Clarinet player now learning how to play flute at 33 years old, and I'm feeling like I'm going right back to 4th grade. And.....the Hello Kitty makes me happy.
Hi! I play flute and piccolo in college and I never realized that playing piccolo can actually cause a lot of damage to my hearing and watching this gave me a good reminder to get some ear plugs! Thank you!:D
I find your jokes and editing really funny while all your hello kitty stuff was literally me in grade 6. I was all about that Japanese/Asian stationary. Your tips and stuff are also really helpful, I wouldn't have figured any of this stuff out on my own. Thanks for the videos and past videos (like vibrato, still trying to figure that mess out)!
wait a minute. So obviously I'm not in a music school (I'm a beginning high school freshman) so, first off... tHEY DON'T PROVIDE MUSIC STANDS?! also oh lord, piccolos go high enough that you need ear plugs?! playing piccolo has come to mind a few times, but I don't know if I can bear to part with my flute
Taekweenie Often it's best to keep a music stand with you for a show or an emergency when there's no stands. I use mine in an extracurricular band. Also most piccolo players ALSO play flute. Flute is often is the main and they switch to picc for part of or all of certain performances.
I have the same flute stand for my piccolo, flute, and oboe! And I use bags to carry the extras around also. Besides the screw driver, I have a spring hook!!!
I have the same Hercules stand with the flute and piccolo pegs, love it. Mine came with two flute pegs and a piccolo peg. I get teased sometimes at band rehearsal because I keep all my stuff in a wheeled computer bag. It holds my flute, piccolo, cleaning kit, tuner, three pencils, two folders of band music, and the Hercules stand, a bottle of water and some breath mints. I always have a mint before rehearsal and have a bottle of water handy to stay hydrated. Although....I've played piccolo since high school (koffkoff years ago) and have never worn ear plugs
Wow, didn't expect so many people to want a 1st piccolo video. It's really just the same as picking your first flute though! I shall think about it though. :)
I played glute/piccolo in high school band, and recently joined a community band where I play flute/piccolo. I can't believe no one has ever told me to wear an ear plug! I definitely have the beginnings of tinnitus in my right ear, but hopefully if I take care and use an ear plug it won't get any worse.
You can use a dollar to clean sticking pads This is the ghetto way and idk my teacher taught me this DO REASEARCH FIRST Step 1: Get any amount of currency in dollar form Step 2: place dollar in between pad and press down Step 3: pull dollar gently to clean pad
Thats a-lot of stuff ;) I had no idea !!! Thank you for the video. Especially the review on the foldable music stand and the flute holder. I have been searching and searching for a non flimsy foldable music stand !!!
IF you use separate pieces of paper for sheet music (which I do) and have them in sheet protectors you can use a dry erase marker. Because you can just wipe it off.
I think you should! When I was younger, I remember that every time a flutist stopped playing, they either quit band all together or switch to saxophone. It was like there was no other option. They said the saxophone fingering is very similar to the flute. And Bryan is right. Since there's no resistance on the flute, you'll just have to get used to playing with a little more pressure on the saxophone (that's why you see their cheeks puff up!).
saxophone does not require as much air as a clarinet, when i first did clarinet i could barely play an e(b for alto sax) saxophone is way easier than clarinet and flute
electronics are great cell phone apps work as well. if choosing stand a lines are chosen choose those which use AAA, AA or 9v batts. Any other batts are higher priced and sometimes hard to find.
haha ya I kind of figured :P was just teasing. I'm trying to break back into music and decided to give flute a shot. Love your videos, keep up the great work :)
I have a student who has exactly what you describe for your Gemeinhardt (I THINK that's how to spell it, lol). Yeppers, get that metronome! It will really help! Thanks for watching! :)
My music stand looks like a thinner version of yours. I payed $10 for it on amazon, but i cannot put a binder on it easily when fully extended, i am always afraid it will tip.
Hi, I use thin cotton gloves to handle and play the flute. They not only protect my flute and hands from each other, but they help me home in for the holes on the keys and slide my pinky between the D#, C#, C, and B keys. What do you think about that?
I think actaully need that stand. The one I have is just a budget Amazon one and it’s frustrating to use. It has these antenna peg thingy (idk what it’s called) that you can adjust ti hold down the sheet music. The issues are that 1, the antennas block the sheet music, and 2, they end up coloring and scratching my sheet music. It looks like a graphite mistake lol.
Ive been playing the flute for 9 years? i didnt really have to see this video but... I JUST LOVE YOUR VIDEOS lol little jokes you make are so funny lol flute stand: looking exceedingly wrong. flute stand at the airport . I died...lol Cant will till the next video comes out! Cheers from Toronto :)
my best friend is first chair and I am second and we both play flute and piccolo and we don't need stands for our instruments. we just put the ones we are not playing on my chair behind me since i sit far up on my chair. and we have the same problem you do that we cant put our piccolos on our laps because we also have short legs
First thing I'm thinking of is microfibre. That's not something to be used to swab the inside of the insturment--it's a polishing cloth. ;) *If* that is indeed what you are describing...
Holy Damn, You have to do so much for your flute- Cleaning- Special stands. I mean- When you play the violin- The only accessories you need are Rosin; Bow or 2; A violin obviously xD A stand, rosin, pencil A MUST
Okay, so I just recently switched from trumpet to flute, and I bought it from my friend who was quitting band...she didn't give me a cleaning rod with it and I was wondering where I could get a cheap wooden one. my teacher told me that wooden cleaning rods cost like 20$ and I was wondering if there was a cheaper one...
I think the only real difference is that you can go down to B natural. But what I had trouble with was that when I first played my my b foot flute I forgot and hit someone in the head. So you'll have the joy of having a longer flute.

Hi just another flutist I'm staring the flute on Monday coming from saxophone and I hear that the flute is super hard is I and also how do you tune a flute and also do your arms get sore thank you so much from all your help 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Your arms do get sore when you first start out but after you practice for a while that goes away. I would also stretch your arms/hands before and after you play if you do get sore. I don't really think the flute is hard... I've tried playing saxophone and that was interesting(i.e. tried it for two weeks and failed). Learning any new instrument is hard and I think sometimes people don't cope well with certain instruments. Make sure you triple and quadruple check with fingering charts and be weary of the fingerings for "D,E and Eb" between the different octaves. (learning the wrong fingering and having to re-learn the correct fingering later stinks) Good luck! ^_^
so i've just decided recently after having over a year off i'm going to start playing the flute again. i found a really great website/company to rent to own instruments .
ahhh you should most definitely do a tutorial on how to play piccolo. I have to play it in concert band alone... and I'm freaking out. High notes hate me -_- You're right. Ear plugs are a MUST.
Maybe get a Yamaha. If your around grade 2-grade 4 maybe a Yamaha 211 and as you progress, go to 311 then 411 and then onto 511. I had a Trevor James and I'm getting either a Yamaha or another Trevor James.
+JustAnotherFlutist , from where did you buy the Hercules Stand ( the one for the piccolo and flutes ) and did it bring the pegs or bought them separately ?
Heh how funny. I randomly chosen a video clip to watch of my collection. It was Ashley Tisdale's "Crank It Up" and it has a metronome in it at the 3rd second. Maybe I should make a list of modern pop video clips which features some interesting gadgets. This far this is the only one I know. :)
I want to get a tuner (obviously) but I'm really scared that I'm going to end up buying a super crappy one! Can you recommend any brands or models or anything?
btw do you know any flute thats hard to get the high register like yamaha? because im use to blow hard to get high notes, unlike gemeinhardt and jupiter, they are easy to get hig register, what brand you know that might be hard to get it like yamaha?
I recall 6th grade history.Band was before history,so of course I had my metronome with me.Suddenly, when we were taking a test,it turns on,and everyone started screaming because they thought I had a bomb.I tried to explain, but I couldn't be heard by the shrieks of innocent children. It was getting quicker,so they thought it was about to go off. They ran out of the room, and once everyone was outside I was able to tell them that it was a metronome.Yeah,I delayed the test by almost half an hour and no one talked to me for the rest of the day.
That is hilarious.
Omg LOL
Ahhh life's good isn't it 😁😂😂😂
Beware the Mad -Bomber- Metronomist
One tip also is to drink water during practices I find it helps me not get headaches and not to get winded.
Lizzie Mackinnon also play with a full belly of something. Idk why but when im so full i cant bend over i play my flute super well. Just remember to brush or rinse
u always do that in band and it actually helps
Thanks! That actually helps, bc I get winded alot, and easily especially in band when we have to blow alot and repeat stuff. So thanks.👍👍👍👍❣️
Lizzie Mackinnon thanks this will definitely help me,I’m starting flute for band this year and I need LOTS of tips😂
Now that I think about it, it makes me shudder when I think about all the stuff that accumulates inside wind instruments.
Scubadog so I'm in band and I switch to flute and I need a cloth
Tuner and metronomes are also apps and work well. :)
Use a dollar bill for sticky pads.
I go to fed ex and have all my music copied then immediately turn in the originals. For a couple bucks you have music you can mark up to your hearts content and if they get spills or torn, no biggie.

Arjay Cruz I carry this stuff as well. I don't know, if it's just me. Do you carry a nailscissor as well?
Wait you guys call it Rocine where are you from cause where I’m from we call it Rosin
Can you please make a video on the piccolo? I play the flute and I might start playing the piccolo
Kaylee Alsip you can find one on her curious.com page, the link is curious.com/justanotherflutist :)
Same here!
1:05 heheh... (I'm going to get a piccolo flute)

I haven't actually counted! But I've gotten enough requests for me to seriously consider a "What's on Joanna's Bookshelf" video some day. ;)

Thumbs up for the Hello Kitty bag! I love using different types of cute fabric bags to carry some of my kit around in.
Great video!!!! i didn't know about the ear-plugs.... thanks for the advice!
IF you use separate pieces of paper for sheet music (which I do) and have them in sheet protectors you can use a dry erase marker. Because you can just wipe it off.
I'm a flutist and I'm thinking about starting saxophone, as my flute teacher plays sax too. Would you recommend?
+Meme Celt yes i meaning you need to use more air then usual, but it is worth playing. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but yeah.
+Bread I have asthma so yeah I have to use more air than usual
I think you should! When I was younger, I remember that every time a flutist stopped playing, they either quit band all together or switch to saxophone. It was like there was no other option. I am an adult relearning flute and you crack me up and look forward to watching more of your videos
If you have a smartphone you can download a metronome app. They also have tuner apps but they aren't always reliable.
Flutists are FABULOUS!!! *Dramatic Pose*
haha ya I kind of figured :P was just teasing.
I'm trying to break back into music and decided to give flute a shot. Love your videos, keep up the great work :)
You can use end papers (used on the ends of the hair when doing a perm) for you key pads...way cheaper!
Thanks for the support!! Much appreciated. :)
Great vid! "I know it looks like lip balm, please don't use it as lip balm....that's gross"~ ha ^_^
I have a student who has exactly what you describe for your Gemeinhardt (I THINK that's how to spell it, lol). Yeppers, get that metronome! It will really help! Thanks for watching! :)
Awesome possum. I'll get to it--I might re-record a Bach sonata I did a few years back. :)
I have that book that she put in the music protector lol!!
My music stand looks like a thinner version of yours. I payed $10 for it on amazon, but i cannot put a binder on it easily when fully extended, i am always afraid it will tip.
I play the cello and when my cello isn't tuned, I just let my conductor tune it for me : P Love these videos!!
the preview showed you holding up the music stand, but only for a second , so I was like "does she have a shotgun? "
Imagine my shock!
I got the zipper binders too you inspired me!
Lurve it. I use it when rehearsals go long and I don't have time to dismantle the flute to swab it out and put it back together. :)
when you are in public space and those metronome went on and thought as time bomb....
Hi, I use thin cotton gloves to handle and play the flute. They not only protect my flute and hands from each other, but they help me home in for the holes on the keys and slide my pinky between the D#, C#, C, and B keys. What do you think about that?

*you have mE dyInG*
Thank you very mucho. Blessings.
Hmmm, interesting, Joanna. I'll like flute stand. I have a question. Does the flute and the piccollo have the same fingering?
Hye Miss Joanna, can you please make a video on the differences between Bfoot flute and Cfoot flute etc etc
The difference is b foot can play a low b (on flute) and the c foot can just play a low c (on flute)
I think the only real difference is that you can go down to B natural. But what I had trouble with was that when I first played my my b foot flute I forgot and hit someone in the head. So you'll have the joy of having a longer flute.
I had a visceral reaction when she mentioned the silver wire stands
Hercules is one of the best brand for stands of all kinds of instruments. I only use Hercules for all my instruments
Flute/Clarinet/OBOE stand...I'm sorry. I play Oboe, and not that many people talk about Oboe. I also play flute as well! ^-^
EnderMC14 I play oboe too!
I play oboe, flute, Android piano
I play oboe, clarinet, and tenor sax.
"I think it's just 'cause I'm a flutist..." Lol I died laughing, my teacher always say fruities were divas ;P
Should you wear ear plugs every time you play piccolo? Of course when you practice but about during rehearsals and performances?
Can anyone really tell the difference between 440Hz and 442Hz?
pmh1nic Yes
Thomas Mulligan Are you saying the human ear can detect a 2Hz difference in frequency? I've done a little reading on the subject and based on that it requires at best a 3% change in frequency in order for humans to detect a change. While independently you might not be able to hear the difference. In an ensemble, the difference will cause the notes to beat. Plus as the octave increases, the number of cycles between the pitches increases.
Our band tunes to 442 because that’s what the marimbas are tuned to.
I just heard Roland Kirk, play 'Serenade to a Cuckoo' and just received my first flute last week. You seem brilliant. How long would you say maybe practicing for 1/2 to an hour a day a person can actually feel he or she knows how to play the flute in approximations?
When I started, I practised for around 10-15 minutes. Now I practise 45-1 hour a day. I'm grade 4.
I have a giemenhardt (how the heck do you spell it) flute and it came with the hard case then a leather one which you put the hard case in and has a strap :D and I have a tuner but no metronome... (I really need one...) anyways great vid and thanks!
Hi just another flutist I'm staring the flute on Monday coming from saxophone and I hear that the flute is super hard is I and also how do you tune a flute and also do your arms get sore thank you so much from all your help 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

so i've just decided recently after having over a year off i'm going to start playing the flute again. i found a really great website/company to rent to own instruments .
Hello what is the Daiso Item called I am trying to find it and am having a very hard time. I would like to get one for my music. Thank you so much
ahhh you should most definitely do a tutorial on how to play piccolo. I have to play it in concert band alone... and I'm freaking out. High notes hate me -_- You're right. Ear plugs are a MUST.
which one has a better sound? armstrong or jupiter i forgot about those 2
Hey JAF, I love the idea of using those big zip-up things for my music. Is there a link to where I can buy one online? There isn't a Daiso around me.
My flute pads literally are destroyed...Had this flute for years quite upset. Any suggestions for a new flute make. Last one was Jupiter.
You can get them replaced instead of forking out for a new flute - but I don't know if it is cheaper
Maybe get a Yamaha. If your around grade 2-grade 4 maybe a Yamaha 211 and as you progress, go to 311 then 411 and then onto 511. I had a Trevor James and I'm getting either a Yamaha or another Trevor James.
Wasn't there a video where you introduced a product to swab your flute and the thing Kinda looks like an arrow
How many books about music do you have? What are there titles?
how about compare a student model and a intermediate model or any model u have?
3:02
MUSIC STANDS!!!!
Do you have to get the flute-stand-peg-thing?
+JustAnotherFlutist , from where did you buy the Hercules Stand ( the one for the piccolo and flutes ) and did it bring the pegs or bought them separately ?
can you compare three of urs :) also which flute brand u had is the best? yamaha?
Hi can you please have the link for the music stand, tuner, mini bag, and metronome
I washed a swab. It's quite thick(I play the saxophone) and it's grey.I have no idea what it is made of.Oh god.Do you know any material that's such?
my band tunes to concert Bb and we just tune our Strings in orchestra
"NEVER WASH YOUR FLUTE"😂😂😂😂
Heh how funny. I randomly chosen a video clip to watch of my collection. It was Ashley Tisdale's "Crank It Up" and it has a metronome in it at the 3rd second. Maybe I should make a list of modern pop video clips which features some interesting gadgets. This far this is the only one I know. :)
I have already, haha! Silver vs. Nickel Flutes. ;)
I want to get a tuner (obviously) but I'm really scared that I'm going to end up buying a super crappy one! Can you recommend any brands or models or anything?
Awsome vid thanks for the advice!
Haha, thanks! They're really fun to make! :)
btw do you know any flute thats hard to get the high register like yamaha? because im use to blow hard to get high notes, unlike gemeinhardt and jupiter, they are easy to get hig register, what brand you know that might be hard to get it like yamaha?
What brand is your micro fiber polishing cloth
11:05 this is why I own erasable pens
Hahaha, that's difficult, because only the Yamaha and Jupiter are student model flutes. Out of those two, I still say Yamaha. :)
Yes, PLEASE make a first piccolo video!
Um, I honestly don't know. Sometimes it depends on the wear of the instrument as well. You just have to try it, and you'll know. ;)
Yay!
What video edit do you use? Its so clear!
Dang you know your stuff! A 440 and A442 is important especially with string players! Don't even get me going on A 455 that is crazy!!!
What kind of flute case is that?
can you do a video on how to do A , B and C notes
I love the hunger games reference. Wooo katniss. Lololol
I have the flute center of New York polishing cloth can I throw those in the washing machine
Make a video on how to buy your first piccolo. Please?
