"we're very close to budget. that's very poor for an engineer"
yeah they normally go a few billion over
better to go under it and ask for a few billion over
Only if the government is going to pay
Gotta put those lowball bids in to win the job
@@Azsunes yup. Honest bidders don’t get contracts
Even with billion dollar budget, engineering is still a 'penny pinching' job (speaking from experience)
"How can I make this as cheap as possible without letting them die" is not something I want to hear from a civil engineer lol
Edit: I keep getting comments so let me clarify. This was a jooooooke! I know it's how they do, I just thought it would be a funny comment
but that what actualy happend even in real life lol
As a civil engineer in a bridges and civils office this is exactly what we do
It's one of those phrases like "discount laser eye surgery".
Engineering business irl, how can I make this cheaper so my company will survive for another 5 year
this is exactly what engineering is about lmao
"that bridge is rather aesthetically pleasing" sounds an awful lot like an ARCHITECT to me
the difference between architects and engineers is that for an engineer "form follows function", for an architect, its "only form, and aesthetics", as long as it does its functions first, its engineering !
Real Civil Architect
@@monad_tcp Sounds like you have 0 idea what most architects actually do. But hey i get it, stereotypes are fully pushed here.
@@monad_tcp There are architects like that, but then the usually are jsut supposed to make the rough design, but most architects have to plan many of the details without ignoring wheather they can be build like they want.
#RCEIsSecretlyAnArchitect
As a structural engineer, I find this very amusing. Binged your content for over an hour. Great stuff! Keep it up.
You think an hour is binging...that's cute.
@@jasondean88888 thats only like, 3 videos
@Juan Galtón So we change the meaning of words? Maybe it's different among people you know, but among people I know it would be an incorrect usage to apply "binge" to watching something for less time than the length of one average movie.

I want to watch this guy play some cities skylines
he has played it :D
Ye
Hey you can
did but didnt liked it. too technical and stuff
He has
16:10 doesn't look like a glitch to me... He's using the elasticity in the material and the car to create a catapult system. It's genius!
this is legit one of the funniest things I've seen in years and I can't even explain why. Just - the cheapest and most expensive solutions by other users - pure gold
the ones that just yeet the vehicles to their goal are the best lmao
Haha right? It’s funny how people solve the levels.
Guy: "I think I can make it cheaper."
Governments: "You rang?"
"it hold itself"
I love how even if the car falls in the water, as long as it touched the checkpoint even briefly, the bridge is fine.
Yeah, this bridge is approved, it's not my fault your car fell in the water.
Or the one time-use bridges, lol.
thats literally how engineers build bridges irl, they re barely enough
@@SToXC_. I'm pretty sure 16 inch steel beams can support my car well above just "barely"
Nope, usually we overdesigning things quite a lot, just to be sure.
Because why not?
From an electrical engineer.
@@LongTran-em6hc The lack of blackouts thank you.
I like that ironically haha.
I mean, you'll need a new suspension but we got you across the river xD

As a non-engineer, watching someone play this as intended instead of just spamming pieces is quite fascinating.
I'm not even going to lie I definitely laughed at the double Decker cars. You got to love people's ingenuity
"99.8% stress"
Life-sustaining civil structures should always be designed with a 2.5x margin of safety. Not a 1.002x lol
too bad, if they're too heavy that's their fault
Nonsense! The Engineers were told to make the bridge hold, so they made the bridge hold :D
.02x safety margin 🤣
If there weren't any windy days, that safe margin would be 1.001x
also because material fatigue is a thing
“Anyone can build a bridge but only an engineer can barely build a bridge”
RCE, I'm so glad you've been bringing us such variety! From timberborn to Infra, and yet, you still haven't forgotten about our beloved poly bridge series.

I like how you show the best bridges after you make yours. Great way to visualize engineering architecture.
Something you learn in project management is that going far BELOW the budget is also considered a bad thing, it gives of the impression your "team" doesn't know how to give proper estimations or might been trying to con the petitioner

I used to play a game called "Bridge Builder" back in the Windows 2000 days. Nice memories! It was a bit advanced I guess, because it shows you the stress level of any part of the bridge by changing the color from green to red during stress test.
Of course, Bridge Builder was the first, Pontifex in 3D was the continuation and this is just a variation on the same theme :-)
You should do a series where you give each build a safety factor (say 5) and you have to get the max stress under 20% or something!! Like you would in a real bridge design!
This is the truest version of “anyone can make a bridge, but only an engineer can make a bridge that barely works”
Over engineering is easy, but it takes true skill to almost but not quite fuck up
Student: this professor i hate him so much why tf he doesnt let me pass his class so i can graduate and become an architech
Professor: i saw you on the top 1 at budget build and i wont allow you to become an architech for a better future
Civil engineer and architect are two different beings
Haha Matt’s genuinely happy to end his episode again with a ‘peace, love & BRIDGES’ 😄
Real Civil Engineer working his real civil engineering skills to get that sponsor bridge to hold structurally sound.

"I'm close to budget, that's pretty poor for an engineer." - aren't most civil engineering projects way over budget in real life?
yah but the over in budget goes to pockets 😉
not when your bonus is on the line
only if its paid by taxpayers
they get costed in (eg) 2020 dollars, but paid for in 2025 - 2028 dollars (when it actually gets built). just imagine you have to cost replacing the carpet in your house today, but wont actually buy the carpet for another half a decade. If you think can get that right, just imagine doing that for 15 million cube of fill on a major roading project, when youre not even sure the government will release enough rock from local quarries to get it done.
The bid put in by the engineer is very different from the final cost put in by the construction crew
The engineer doesn't put the price tag for paying them to stand around 70% of the time
I've had many good laughs from RCE previewing the clips made by the other players. Their chaotic creativity somehow makes it works.
16:00 “wHaT tHe sHeT” had me ROLLING 🤣
I feel like they should add a mode where it: A) has to be repeatable, so have the car go across and complete it and without resetting the bridge another one has to cross. B) The cars must survive and that includes not flipping over.
ensurance to the budget, so all court fees will add to the build
If I don’t risk death using a bridge then I don’t want it
17:33 this one had me laughing. At that point you're just relying on CHANCE to get to the other side! That was a funny little bridge, I like!

i always love RCE but i was hoping for timberborn ngl
It’s best this way otherwise it gets boring, anticipation is endorfin

more child labor!
His timberborn stuff is a lot more popular, but it probably gets boring to play the exact same game over and over. He probably has a more enjoyable work day by mixing things up. (Even though I wish that he would post like 10 beaver videos every single day plus a couple hours of twitch beavering)
15:56 where the real fun starts
When he looked at the "glitch" solution, for the elevator level, that was just falling road without the need for timing.
One of my favorite classes was Engineerin Mechanics, especially when we were going over trusses, compression and tension and transferring loads. Good stuff!
Just got into this channel and watched all of the old poly bridge stuff - really glad there's more to watch now! 😁

Hey! I discovered your channel today and am really loving the poly bridge stuff! I'd like to suggest you recreate the Hernando DeSoto bridge that spans the Mississippi between Tennessee and Arkansas. It had a major crack discovered in May and was closed for several months while they repaired it.
There's the engineering approach, and there's the outside the box approach. Both are equally fascinating.
RCE: “Hello fellow engineers”
Me, watching as a hospital receptionist: “yes… excellent…”
16:14 Is the best bridge of them all. HAHAHHAH
You know he's an engineer when he says: "oh it worked, I didn't think it would"
Being frequently surprised when things work is a sign of extensive expertise. Shows a keen awareness of how badly it can go.
"That's very aesthetically pleasing" .. alright, you architect!
7:53 man, that's genius and funny af. Pivoo, you got this.

The upload rate is very impressive and I love the timberborn videos
Keep it going
15:59 the disappointment and sudden change got me there
I would love to see the strongest (lowest stress) bridge you could build, no budget limit just low stress
Sounds like a standard government project. They overengineer for safety and lifespan (never know when 60-70 ton tanks are going to drive over).
BTW, Be warned, a well designed bridge is only a strong as your contracting officer ability to enforce the engineer designs.
@@helstromh I don't understand how prioritizing safety is considered overengineering. You're just a bitter, anti-human Trump supporter that is trying to take away a woman's right to choose.

Hello Matt I been loving your content my favorites are timberborn poly bridge 1 and 2 and mini motorways

I got to respect that as a fellow engineer, your designing for both serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state, and everyone else is just doing ultimate limit state.
7:45 it's not to slow the car down for less force exactly, it's to stop the car long enough for the minibus to get across first, meaning one vehicle crossing at a time so less weight at a time on the whole structure.
my guy literally says the same. "less force on the bridge" is equal by definition to "less weight at a time on the whole structure" lol. you just rephrased it in another way.
@@vicelcia9470 they imply the force has to do with the speed, and there are some smaller force concerns that may come into play with the effect that block had on acceleration of the car, along with the car pushing the block. Weight is afterall a measure of one specific force that would be involved (perhaps the only one that matters, i dont know how the physics was coded in that game)
@@ReyosBlackwood oh i see. i guess you are right. it is actually even worse if you let the car go slower since the pressure will act longer on the bridge. perhaps he said it without thinking or he phrased it wrong. all and all you're right
I love watching people's hilariously cheap bridge designs! I laughed so hard I cried at 15:58. 🤣🤣🤣
I remember using a janky bridge builder program in middle school, our teacher gave us a budget and I remember having a ton of fun trying to get them to work. This game looks a lot better tho.
We made stick bridges, and I got permission to make a Tower. It held up more weight than almost all the bridges put together! Even got to take it home, cause we found the break point before it crushed. Most proud day of Middle school life.
@@Telerian3 that's the way to go my guy.
Lol love it at 16:00 where the video is so chill then all of a sudden this happens
3:03 I mean I agree that it looks like it should be cheaper, but replacing the right side with your "cheaper" version actually made it cost 43$ more, so overall you made it cost 86$ more.
