  • The work of Farrington and Moffitt explores how people (typically children and young adults) move into and out of crime and delinquency early in life. However, there is one life course model put forward by Sampson and Laub (US criminologists) who have advanced an age-graded theory of informal social control. This approach examines the role of turning points in offering those engaged in offending behaviour a route away from crime -- often referred to as desistance from crime. Examples of turning points include obtaining employment, severing ties with criminal associates, and marriage.
