  • Ever fancy driving a Lotus? Lotus Turbo Challenge provided that opportunity, giving players to honour of driving a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE and Lotus Elan SE across a variety of courses. There's a fairly regular generic one, plus one at night, one in the fog, one in the snow, one in a desert, one on a American interstate, one in a marsh and one in a storm.
This was a port of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 which was originally released on the Commodore Amiga. In a rare situation of an Amiga game being better than the Mega Drive version, Lotus 2 was better on the Amiga that this is one the Mega Drive. It's not an awful game by any means, but it's very unforgiving and you really can't make any mistakes in later levels. Kind of like real driving I guess.
In one player mode, action takes place in the bottom half of the screen - this was to accommodate the game's two player mode as the second window for the second player wouldn't need any shrinking down or anything. It does mean that backgrounds are sometimes a little lacking.
There's no music during gameplay, but each stage has its own intermission tune which. The tunes are ok, but the Mega Drive's renditions aren't the greatest.
This was a tough and painful game to record, with lots and lots of restarts and save states required to show a full playthrough. I can't imagine many people would have had the patience to complete it back in the day.
