Unrealistic social media is the reason I unfollowed most people whose content I used to enjoy. I realized that scrolling through my YT/Insta feeds made me sad, thinking my life is worth less because it's boring, not *aesthetic*, I don't have the money or time to travel all over the world. I'd rather see a "look at my cute cup" and "I went for a walk and found this nice leaf" posts that genuinely show a moment of happiness (or any interesting moment, really, happy or otherwise) that isn't carefully planned and constructed. I am very happy for what people have achieved, but it all went from being entertaining to "if I made different choices, would my life look as great as theirs?". And even though I know their lives aren't always great, they also struggle, no one sees and no one knows. I know someone's social media feed shouldn't make me sad, but on the other side, shouldn't it make my day better somehow? If not happier, shouldn't I at least feel somewhat fulfilled - not sad, anxious? So I just stopped. I realized I'm not part of the usual 'influencer target group' anymore, so I started following those that fit my interests, and honestly, I can only recommend it. Social media shouldn't make you sad (there's plenty of things in life that already do that).

Totally agree. Most people I follow don’t have many subscribers or are people who I’ve been following forever and like their personality. In fact, in instagram I follow people that I am even able to have conversations with them cos they don’t have millions of subscribers and that’s the amazing thing about social media, connecting with people from all over the world with similar interests!

Wow, I am going through the exact same thing! I consider my self a strong person, I educated myself enough to know that social media is just a facade, everybody has problems behind closed doors. Still, in difficult times I find myself being even more depressed when I see over edited, unrealistic photos thinking wow, I could be there, on the beach sipping a cocktail, but here I am in the office typing emails all days... Maybe a few years ago, I would’ve quit the conventional work scene and start my own channel, when it was all for fun, but now social media is all about business, I feel it’s not genuine anymore. It’s very interesting to see how this influencer industry is evolving, what it’s gonna be like in 2-3 years

Ella Tkachenko that’s okay, although it does sound awful lol, not gonna lie. However, I don’t want anyone to feel bad because of watching my videos, so i’m glad you don’t watch it. I am always real about how I portray my life, the good and the bad days, but I never let that affect my work ethics - I did not come so far only to come so far :) And I’m not going to change that. I've been on UA-cam since 2009. I can relate to E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G you said. From Bubzbeauty or Blairs What's in my Bag to Beauty Smarties..what a flashback..
UA-cam used to be a platform I turn to when I wasn't feeling my best. Now it became a business - which is great, but the main purpose got lost. Drama is trending. Careers are ending. It's different..
All people care nowadays is to take the perfect photo - I feel like we stopped appreciating the moment.
Loved when you said it was your third tequila. Made me smile.
Hope you'll try to keep shining. It's us that need to change the platform and it starts with being honest to yourself.
    Good Luck Evelina.

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT! I have been so fed up with social media in general. Nothing feels authentic anymore. The reason I started watching UA-cam was for entertainment, sometimes to escape my life or just plain curiosity on what other people lives are like and what they do. I enjoyed seeing youtubers grow and expand their careers, but it got to the point where everyone started doing the same thing. Everything had to be perfect. But the thing is, NOBODY IS PERFECT! I hate seeing how everyone is trying to achieve perfection or how everyone is doing things just for the money. What happened to people just being themselves and wanting to entertain people? Just looking at how social media has changed over the years, people have straight quit UA-cam, others switched to focusing on one platform, while some just quit everything and walked away from it all. I think it sad how people had to walk away in order to better their mental health; it should never have reached that point. I wish you the best Evelina and I hope you can get those creative juices flowing again because I really do enjoy your content.

Yessss!! Love this comment!! It is definitely true, that a lot of youtubers started just for the money, fame, and “free” stuff. Even a lot of the youtubers I follow I barely watch anymore because you see all this content they put out and it’s just very repetitive, and they come out with these crazy edited thumbnails and crazy edited videos where they gotta look 100% camera ready, and put out all the trending videos just to get likes. NO ONE puts out original content anymore. And if they do, it’s those few youtubers that aren’t widely recognized for what they should be recognized for. Which is very sad. All people wanna see now are the mainstream videos which have to be up to standard or else no one will watch. Same goes for Instagram! Super edited pics, with the right angle, right amount of sunlight, perfect pose, etc. Etc. It’s just ridiculous. I still post my blurry pictures, of my REAL everyday life! I could care less about how many followers i have.

It seems like UA-camrs and Instagrammars are living edited/photoshopped lives and are trying to sell us unrealistic and unachievable goals. You can tell that people aren't being authentic any more and it's all about the hard sell and cynical marketing - or the current buzz word "influencing". Personality, a sense of fun, a joie de vivre and a unique and interesting take on life are so much more engaging and enjoyable to watch than the conveyor belt of " perfect" faces and latest miracle products. So thank you for being so honest and for having the courage to step off that old conveyor belt and striving to be your unique self.

"10 balloons and an eagle flying at the right moment" - I am sorry but I just started laughing uncontrollably, this is so true.
All the reasons you started to resent the social media, are all the reasons are resent watching all the current trendy videos. I literally had to start following stay-at-home-moms videos, not because I am at the same stage, not even close, I don't even like kids. I watch them because they are normal, they are at home, cooking, cleaning, walking around local park etc.
I do like to follow youtubers that post regularly, they can be the most simple short videos, people doing cooking, drinking tea, anything. For me the regularity of the videos brings my anxiety about my own life down, like there is something constant in this world (this probably sounds crazy but whatever).

Evelina you are so spot on. I know exactly what you mean and for me personally, the only thing that helps is to just not care and actually film the exact opposite - my mountain of laundry and my good-morning-face without make-up. It seriously helps me to do that, I know the comments will be rough but I accept it and SO WHAT. I don’t want to create a perfect life because it would be a lie - and I think my viewers don’t want to watch a lie. Yeah I get a ton of hate about silly stuff but I would rather live a life with people ‘hating on my imperfections’ (who’s problem is this anyway?) then me being exhausted because I’m ‘coordinating everything to perfection’ (ugh let’s not start about instagram). Also: the last couple of years I book my own trips and it’s so much more fulfilling making that content. Love the vid and take care X from Holland

I started watching your videos because of your tea talks - they made me feel like I was watching my best friend talk. I also saw your advice and fashion tips as very useful.
And I guess for some people I used to follow, but not anymore, is that I enjoyed seeing something I can’t own myself. That’s twisted, but at least watching people in a pretty environment with their closets and vanities full of stuff is how I tricked my brain into thinking it’s mine. My fashion sense and make up skills might have progressed since I started watching fashion/beauty channels but now as I’m getting older I feel something is lacking. Nowadays I can feel myself gravitating towards knowledge rather than aesthetics. I feel ashamed that my knowledge of fashion brands is bigger than my knowledge of human body or cultures in the world. This is not what life is about and yes, it makes it more enjoyable but at the end of the day, it doesn’t enrich me as a human being. As a result, a few months ago I unsubscribed from most channels so I don’t feel the need to watch such content. I’m so much more happy watching science videos or learning foreign languages.

I used to be a blogger and I enjoyed writing about makeup so much and looked forward to it every day. But back then no one could see me, I could be myself, and no one could pick me apart like they do on here. IG completely screwed ppl's minds. They live the lives of someone from their imagination. There is so much hypocrisy, lies, fakeness... sad times. Im happy I was born in 80s, so I had a "normal" childhood :)

@@ginnywilliams8159 i know what you mean but there is a difference between beauty influencers and actual make up artists. I personally hate the chiselled insta ombre brow for example and a lot of these influencers are doing make up only for UA-cam and you could never wear it in the street but that translation is getting lost and somehow people are thinking its real life! I prefer the natural polished look of Jessica Alba. Try and watch some videos of Andrea Ali, she is a make up artist and beautiful but cute and a little kooky sometimes and seems real and natural despite being talented and gorgeous x

      ♡♡♡
I follow people on UA-cam based on their personalities and faces .. not the beauty of their faces but the good and comfy feeling they give me once I see their faces
and of course it has to be they are talking about something I care about as makeup or street experiments or things like that
however I don't watch UA-cam a lot these last years, since I got depression- self diagnosed- and I wanted to engage and live my life properly live it the way I will feel happy about it
and for you girl, I think you should post normal videos the content that you like. it's true that you will have less revenue but on the other hand you will be having a sustainable channel since you will be having a much more stronger audience base than the people who post trendy videos since their audience will forget them the moment they stop posting exciting videos. secondly it's not easy actually to swim against the wave .. it's hard .. but you will be more relaxed more creative and more focused.
      wish you the best ♡

I find this video so relatable in many ways. I don't have the following you do, but the comments that have crept in while my channel grows have been so hurtful and cruel -- and for no reason. It's made me question continuing at times because I stew over these comments and internalize them, which is no good. I love YT and creating content, so I've been trying to make changes to the content, how much I prep, and how I post photos for that reason; I want authenticity and do it for the love of it. I love that you said a channel is about how it makes viewers feel. I, too, want my channel to be feel good and hope as it grows it will continue in that direction and will be something people love while I grow and just share my love of what I do there. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been here since he beginning girl! I remember watching one of your first videos and being confident that you were going to be successful at this. I think we influencers it’s so easy for us to feel mental blocks, and I feel like mine are all due to me comparing myself to the rest of the industry.
Your story reminds me so much of what’s been going on with me, too. I literally fell off the face of my channel due to a toxic relationship. I told myself that I wasn’t worthy of anything better, and with that, my channel slipped out of my palms. I’ve slowly learned that time heals all and I’m sure you’re realizing that too.

The reason why I follow an influencer is because they’re relatable. Like, everything you said is 100% true. I unfollowed so many girls this past year because it’s overkill how unrealistic their lives have become. It’s gotta be from the people for the people.

I miss the old UA-cam days with the "What's in my bag" videos and life without Instagram! I really think that social media is so bad for our mental health! At the same time we can't live without it anymore 😑 I used to watch UA-cam videos because I could relate to the people who were the same age as me or to see how people live in a different country or because I liked the personality of the person. But nowadays everything has become SO unrelatable and everyone is just doing it for the success and the views and the money. I feel like something has got to change sooner or later because it's just not healthy for us humans anymore.

In my opinion, I feel like UA-cam is becoming a more privileged space to compete in. In order to have people watch your videos, you have to have a decent quality camera (which costs money), have the resources to make good thumbnails, be educated on proper tagging, post frequently on social media, have a similar brand throughout all platforms, etc. Having all these things that ensure "youtube success" costs money and requires access to many resources that some may not have. For my own channel, i had to purchase a new camera, buy editing software, invest lots of time into creating "quality content", buying new makeup products, buying new clothes, etc. It's interesting how this space is evolving and it makes sense why some influencers feel overwhelmed at the shift.

I feel like youtubers/bloggers are in a weird place right now. "Everyone is a blogger" because they have a blog but in the same way that everyone that has a dslr camera is a "photographer". No shade to anyone but it's true.... like you said some people paved the way...and now people know what they have to do to be successful. But that also means competing with everyone else on the platform so you need to have the latest technology and editing..... literally your videos/photos need to look like campaigns or people won't follow you. And let's all be real as fun as those videos they are repetitive and not genuine. I see so many people doing the same videos with the same editing with the simplest outfits and they have millions of views and followers, and then I see talented people with these amazing and creative outfits (or content) that have little to no followers because they might not have the best videography. it's really sad because people whine constantly that they miss the old UA-cam but no one supports people that do post more raw and less over processed content ? Idk.... I don't know the solution.... I personally try to find smaller creators to follow that I can connect to and that I find unique or inspiring. Also if you are an aspiring creator/influencer/blogger I think it's important to know what everyone around you is doing just for knowledge but that doesn't mean that's what you have to do, worry about yourself and do what you love. All these UA-cam/blogger pioneers did their own thing and didn't care what people thought and look what came of it . Idk those are my 2 cents. If you are a small content creator let me know so I can check your stuff out ! 😊

Oh Evelina!!!! You have honestly been one of the most genuine souls I've been able to connect with on YT! Many times I'd outgrow a YTuber because their energy was just off and I'm not sure if you all know this but your audience can tell when something is wrong. Usually when that happens, I can't actually click the videos. Despite what you've gone through, you always seemed to be genuine, quirky, fun, relatable and open! I honestly didn't feel like you were too mechanical with your posts....to me your posts just seemed very artistic which I loved and we're the same age lol. This video is exactly why I always loved your videos. I'd say that every desire that you have for us viewers looking at your video is what I truly felt and still feel. I think you're picking up some interesting points about this new industry, and we're going to see more and more people creating videos like this. It's starting to hit a kind of wall, and influencers are realising that. And we're getting older! What worked 2 years ago, doesn't work now, and not only has the audience changed and moved on, but so have we. I've found myself feeling stuck, too, and it takes a long time to figure out your next steps. I've come to the conclusion that a lot of us need a new dream. It sounds like you have achieved a dream, so what will be your next one? You can still use UA-cam and socials to explore it. Social media isn't going any where! But you need to have a new vision for your creativity, and make it sustainable.

Not all of them are geniuses but I think that everyone has a little bit more of an insight into specific things than the rest of us and we should learn from eachother.

I don’t follow many influencers because most of them only post about their sponsorship or paid ad or whatever. I stopped getting that connection and felt like they only cared about their audience because it brings them money. The bloggers and UA-camrs I do watch really care about their followers and constantly give back to the community and charity. They’re honest and give out truly inspirational advice. If they do do a sponsorship they truly believe in it and connect with the company and believe it will benefit the audience. Love you Evelina from the very beginning! I like your personality and although I have a very different style in makeup, I enjoy your videos a lot!

I'm watching this right at the right time. I did not know who you were and now I LOVE YOU literally. You are not alone. Many of us feel that way. God bless you, keep doing things that make you happy. I absolutely respect this video!!

When you’re ready, share your experience from the relationship and how you were able to get out of it.
1 in 3 women experience abuse in their lifetime. You’re not alone. Use this platform to let others know they’re not alone either and can get out of a toxic relationship.
Talk about the red flags, if you know them. And coping strategies.
Of course, only do this when you feel ready, if ever. It is a very personal story. But once you’re ready to share you’ll know you’ve healed from it.
    Stay strong.

Hearing you talking about your experience with your past relationship made me realize that I should start to listen to my friends and get away from my relationship. I love how true you are. People like you are unfortunatly too rare. Your amazing personality is why I subscribed to you years ago =) Stay strong !

this was such a refreshing video to watch. i started my youtube channel a few years ago and fell in love with the whole process. from filming to teaching myself to edit and uploading. but never really stuck with it because now days there is so much pressure to have the BEST video with the perfect background and the best editing. but honestly.. the videos that remind me of old school youtube (like this one, you’re just sitting and talking to the camera. and i LOVE IT) are my favorite to watch! this video actually inspires me to start my channel back up again because it is something that genuinely is so fun for me. i’m just not going to let myself stress about it! thank you. i’m sorry you’ve been feeling the way you’ve been feeling, but just know you’ve inspired at least one person to get back into something they were once passionate about. ❤️ always
