Eyup mi ducks! (Derbyshire Hello) Just wanted to let you know that it was us who gave you the shout out from the boat at Willington. I'm Will and my wife is Sarah. The boat is Hyala. Sarah says thanks for the comment on the bunting. Sarah makes it and says would gladly make you some if you fancy it. It would be a thank you for inspiring us to sell up and move onto a narrow boat last November.
Sorry we were so slow on the uptake when waving back. We were distracted by the chips. Thanks for the kind offer. Not sure it would suite our boat like it does yours or how we would even attach it. Happy cruising and hope our paths cross again one day! Jo
I sure they will. We tried to look for a spot to pull in and say hello properly but it was chock a block full of boats. Sarah says bunting suits anything anywhere, it brings a smile to peoples faces as well. We attach it using tie wraps.
One thing I loved on the canals was the ongoing traffic noise. It totally relaxed me and I slept much better on those nights than than I ever slept at home.
Great Job Jo & Michael. Just be glad George is not a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Not only do they get dirty and smelly but they run faster and further, so much further.
Another lovely vlog pity Micheal is not in to beer but there is an enormous amount of industrial history in Burton to see and absorb not to.mention some rather magnificent horses, I'll gladly drink the beer, we had a wonderful time there.
Minimal List And Viv watched Micheals entrance to marina , she has some advice let Jo do it 😉 . I let her drive the boat mostly she is better at it 😀 see u on the cut some time
Jo, just for the fun of it review one of your older videos and count the number of times you say, 'Like.' You guys are fun to watch. Thanks, and hello from Florida.
Enjoying our morning coffee in Virginia Beach, Virginia watching this video. It inspired a poem, hope you enjoy. The A38 is busy 24 hours a day. Nice pictures of the brewery areas, further up from that fountain is the main town centre full of shops including Birds, the first ever poundland, and a brewery museum. Willington is nice and has a raft race on the river trent in June every year, then a pub crawl. Willington has more shops and food place than in the early 200's, the chippy only open in the last 3 years.
Hey guys, I am a Volunteer Lock Keeper who covers the stretch from Stenson to Derwent Mouth. As at Monday 16 Apr 18 the River Trent has re-opened. It is expected to remain so for the forthcoming days. I am really disappointed that I will likely miss you at one of our Locks. Take Care, Paul. PS: Excellent vlogs.
Thank you so much Paul, that's great to know. We'll be heading through today, leaving Shardlow Lock within the hour. If we don't see you, thanks so much for helping us along in spirit! M
What can i say....Just love watching you all...Thank you again for your daily vlog... : - ) Brilliant...it was just as long...We have moored where you are and it did become a bit noisy the the train and a road..But still good..Take care xxxx
I know. I thought doing a separate day would make my life easier but it didn’t. 🤦🏼♀️ It did kind of spoil the feeling of remoteness a bit but it was still a beautiful spot. Thanks for watching! Jo
you have a lot of fun together. and Maikel use a lot of words i don't know yet so i use subtitles and subtitles also don't know sometimes LOL. good stuf :)
Michael uses a lot of words even he doesn't know... Jo's been putting some work into improving on the auto-generated ones, so hopefully they'll get better! M
And now the High Priestess of Final Cut has redeemed you Mike; and once again you are become Wicket W. Warrick the canal teddy bear. ;-) ...not sure why, but you crazy kids get me writing some absolute tosh!
My daughter has marked all the good chip shops on my map of the trent and Mersey, when you do the northern bit towards the anderton boat lift I will pass on her tips lol. another great vlog, cruising in the sun makes the day so much better.. the mooring at the beginning looks nice. I'm gonna head south from Stone in may so might have to check it out. Keep smiling M&J&G
Midland chandlers are amazing I visited the one near braunston and was like a kid in a sweet shop, I was cruising Saturday just gone and what a difference the sun makes 😀 a wet day on the cut is better than a sunny day at work but a sunny day on the cut is just perfect enjoy ur videos 👍🏻
Pleased the weather is improving guys. Try Wharf House chandlers at Braunston for the paint (if you are ever in that area) they seem to have most colours.
Guys great vid as always. if you are having trouble get the paint colour see if you can chip off a good size bit take it to a car paint supplier and they should be able to match it for you. good luck.
We've been given the name of a Marine paint company that will do exactly that. Luckily we still have the plug we sawed out of the side for the toilet vent! M
Apparently, Burton has perfect water (well water - not river or canal) for brewing beer with "the highest calcium content of any major brewing region, the highest magnesium, and low levels of sodium and bicarbonate"... probably not much good for tea though. It's so good they even export it to other breweries so they can "ruin water" too. I once went on a brewery tour near Nuneaton where they took their beer to Burton in a tanker for bottling then came back with the tanker full of water to brew the next batch.
Fascinating... must be a lot of limestone down there. I do occasionally wish I could develop a taste for beer, as the chemistry and history behind it is quite interesting, but no matter how much I try I seem to always prefer the water. M
Same advice we got, see as many as you can... spend time getting a feel for a lot of them and how very different they can be. Buying a narrowboat is like finding an ideal pair of shoes, it's a slog! M
Pasty white, I always blamed mum, I inherited dad's face and general build, but I inherited mum's lilly white legs. The sunnier it gets the more lilly white my legs go. That marina, I looked at that on one of the websites and thought it looked amazing, sort of a holiday village for narrowboats.
I used to be one of them that put the cones , signs and contraflows on A and M roads and maintained them on sight ( I had nothing to do with the actual road works ) but I did live on the A38 at the road works near Barton turn for two weeks 5ft from the live lanes and various other road works and we're I grew up we had the M6 at the bottom of the garden , so now I can hear a nat fart down the road but a car crash outside my house not a chance . ☺
No... he has once jumped off into the water to swim to shore while we were close to it, and he's once left off the boat to shore in a lock (after somehow opening a door), but at that point the boat was stationary. Lucky so far no in motion duck chases. Though he has thought of it. M
As you read the book, i would be interested in your personal additional comments or changes to the book discriptions for each location? Also intro footage was great start.
Ahh, the Nicholson's Guides (sorry thought you might be talking about my very brief mention of the Hobbit)... actually they're very good, so we wouldn't change much, except that ours are somewhat out of date. The historical narrative they provide is really very good, but because ours are older editions there's a lot of no-longer-correct information about things like water points, Elsan and pump outs, etcetera. They came with the boat, and they're accurate enough that we haven't seen the need to buy updated editions. but overall they're great for the context. If I were going to add anything, it might be to make an IPhone / IPad app out of them -- for all I know the latest versions might have that -- but just because navigating through them can be a bit weird, because sometimes you reach the end of the page and you have to move forward for the next stretch, other times backwards, and sometimes you have to go to an entirely other book in the series... an interactive, scrollable and zoomable version of their map itself would be really nice. Hope that answer your question. M
Heh, not that weird. Absent better alternatives - ideally there’d be dedicated bins for what are ultimately compostable organic wastes - the most recent advice has been to bag it and bin it, where it ends up being incinerated. That’s if you can’t allow it time to properly compost, but in practice that’s essentially impossible on a boat with more than one person. This is another reason I tend to recommend the Cinderella incineration toilet to anyone who can afford to install it. M
We've only an extremely vague, basically useless idea on MPG or volume unfortunately... it's a lot of diesel, and it's lasts a month or so between top ups, but trying to be precise is hard because the volume of the tank doesn't seem to be listed anywhere, we've never emptied it, and we don't really have any idea how much the eberpsacher consumes heating the water. M
Well, yes, eventually ... the Trent and Mersey joins the River Trent with the River Mersey, but the Mersey is way up near Liverpool, other end of the canal from where we are. For all I know the ferry is still running up there, but it will be a while before we find out for ourselves! M
After you’d moored up at 13:50 I was surprised how much your boat moved when the other boat(s) passed by - were they flat out at 4 mph or was that just the norm for a passing boat ?
Just love the country side. So different from even the small farm towns here in the Midwest. Also, Michael what are your tattoos day or form. I apologize if this question is off base but have been curious. Thanks Russ
Minimal List. Stupid auto correct and fat thumbs. I was asking what are Michael's tattoos of. The one's one his forearms. So sorry for the miscommunication, but i guess that's what i get for not proof reading my phone. Thank you Russ
No worries, just didn't know what to answer. I need to do this on a Q&A, as it gets asked a lot. They're both life lessons, basically, so there's a bit of a long story behind each... the Arabic on my right arm is just a date, January 1st, 2003 (albeit slightly spelled wrong, part of that long story), which was sort of my first "life reset date". The one on my right is the Chinese for "Compassion" with the Latin phrase "Nunc Scio Quid Sit Amor" through it, basically meaning "Through Compassion I've learned what love is." I've got quite a few tattoos, and basically they're all life lessons I decided I write down before I forgot them. M
Minimal List. Thank you for the answer. I love tattoos with meaning or a story behind them. Instead of just a random picture of design. Well once again thank you and I'll be patiently waiting the next post
You say that you had aspirations towards overalls. I would just mention that my wife bought some for our boat but it is not absolutely clear the the possession of these has increased her productivity. Maybe it has but the jury is certainly still out. As you will have guessed by now, she doesn't read the comments section below your vlogs. Frank.
Depends a lot on the ground conditions. 45 degrees is a bit steep, but some angle away from the line axis is a good idea, especially with softer ground (where we also drive a second pin through the first), but in this very firm ground the angle doesn't really help as much, but does make them a lot harder to remove. M
Don't use knots that much, just some hitches. The main one is called the Canalman's Hitch, and it's the only one we've (sort of) remembered. And no, I'm still magnetic. M
Love the one day vlogs, even though they are as long as the session ones. Heres a question for you, i noticed that some of the locks have a single gate on one end and double on the other end. Is there any reason for this ?.
Hi darran, I hope you don't mind that I chime in. My narrowboat experience is quite low but I was into that topic a bit and I hope that my answer is correct: #1 Single gates often occur at the "upper" part of narrow locks. Those gates have considerably less height than the lower lock gates because they only go from slightly above water level down to the cill wich is at the bottom of the upper part of the canal. Whereas the (mostly double) lower gates have to cover the height from the water level of the upper canal part to the bottom of the lower canal. Less height is less weight so they can do a single gate and it should (!) still be easy enough to move. #2 Besides the weight there's another reason against the usage of single gates at the lower side. The lower gates have to swing "into" the lock (because of water pressure). Single gates need more room to swing than shorter double gates so they'd have to make the locks longer to allow the same size of boats.
I have to ask. Foxes Afloat and David Johns have done vlogs on their loos so I get the Elsans, composting and pump out loos but you seem to speak about only the liquid containers. Are you being polite?😎
My first comment of the day; In country Aus the first subject for conversation is always the weather and more particularly how much rain you've had, if any! Sunshine! it's Autumn here and a beautiful day with temp about 21 degrees C but no stinky George. Did you have fish with your chips? Thatlooks like a great day for you, what sort of temps do you know and yes being a "daily vlog" I guess it should be shorter, but hey I still enjoy them!!!
It was a wonderful day. Followed by a miserable one weather wise. Where about in in Aus are you? Your Autumn weather looks ideal. We are both vegetarians but love chip shop chips (when cooked in oil) I am learning I have little control over the length of vlog. It depends how much we happen to pick up the camera, what happens during the day and how chatty we are feeling. Jo
Hi Jo, we live in Wallerawang on the western side of the Blue Mountains and about 150km North West of Sydney and 3194 feet above sea level , looks like we may get snow this winter which it does all around us every winter but we don't always get snow lying on the ground. We love it here, no humidity and very few really hot days in summer. I love how you two get in front of the camera, then sort what is going to be discussed and who will lead in! Always gives me a laugh, keep going guys but don't let the vlogs rule your lives!!! Cheers, Graham
It has to be said I'm afraid... SUBTITLES...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...Too aweful!!
I'm sorry folks--it seems that I have made a mistake here. I watch youtube on my (not so) smart tv, and on this it shows all your films with terrible subtitles--badly written, and a great distraction from your visuals. But it has been revealed to me that it is NOT down to your doing. Please accept my grovelling apology.
Yeah Jo's been starting to add in corrected subtitles, but it's a very time consuming process to correct the ones Google automatically generates. On the latest two videos they should be more accurate, but on earlier ones it's whatever sense a machine could make of my yammering, which is likely none. M

Great Job Jo & Michael. Just be glad George is not a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Not only do they get dirty and smelly but they run faster and further, so much further.
We're definitely glad he's no springier than he is now! Can barely keep up as is! M
My late dad used to take me to Stenson Marina as a little kid, long before we ever had a narrowboat holiday. He always wanted his own boat.
Good he inspired the love of them in you. M
Another lovely vlog pity Micheal is not in to beer but there is an enormous amount of industrial history in Burton to see and absorb not to.mention some rather magnificent horses, I'll gladly drink the beer, we had a wonderful time there.
We did see some amazing, industrial architecture. The history was everywhere. Jo
Minimal List And Viv watched Micheals entrance to marina , she has some advice let Jo do it 😉 . I let her drive the boat mostly she is better at it 😀 see u on the cut some time
Oh sure, she can do the next big river section!! M
Jo, just for the fun of it review one of your older videos and count the number of times you say, 'Like.' You guys are fun to watch. Thanks, and hello from Florida.
It takes a while to get comfortable speaking to a camera without, like, pausing. M
SURPRISE!!!!!! Job done, as requested, I'll see myself out...
Haha! Thank you! Jo
Happy anniversary.
My wife and I really enjoy your videos and look forward to someday renting a boat for a vacation there.
Thank you. I really hope you get to take that vacation one day soon. Jo
As always loved the Vlog. Promise next time the coffees are on us. 😀
Thank you and good luck with the boat search! Jo
George Look realllly relaxed on the towpath while you both chatted. Brilliant.
George is quite a fan of the towpath! M
Nice to see u enjoying the lovely weather on your boat
You’ve got to make the most of it while it lasts! Jo
Enjoying our morning coffee in Virginia Beach, Virginia watching this video. It inspired a poem, hope you enjoy.

Well the line breaks did not work. J.A.Warren
Hah! Nice! Now, how is it that I just read that to the tune of Eminem's "Lose Yourself"??? M
Nice vid looking forward to the summer vids 👍👍🌞🌞🛳
Summer seemed to arrive for two days, tomorrow we appear to be on to fall. Hopefully summer returns!! M
Cool bananas. Another vlog. Enjoying these trip videos. Keep them coming.
Long as we keep chugging along! M
It's so peaceful to watch your life thank you
Thanks for watching it! M
Loving the one day cruise vlogs
Thank you. It’s good to hear! Jo
Hi guys
Love your vlogs and George's
Thanks from all of us! M
My suggestion on how to tidy up your boat:-
Buy a makita 18v battery angle grinder/sander (they do a 12v dc charger too)
Attack rust with grinder
Touch up bare metal with international yacht paint primer.
Then apply international paint undercoat and top coat of desired colour with a roller.
Mask up boarders and apply more paint in contrasting colour.
Go on give it a try.
That angle grinder part sounds a bit daunting! M
Minimal List You just fit a flap wheel to the grinder and it is not really too aggressive it's more like a heavy duty sander. You can sand all the rust away rather than some sort of girly rust treatment.
I've used a flap wheel for larger patches, but I've never got the hang of using them for tiny little scratches and worn corners. The one on my Dremel I can control on little things like that, but the flap wheels on those things just wear out so damned fast. M
We liked the whole area. The beer brewing history was interesting as well as all the old industrial buildings. So much to see! Jo
Hey guys, I am a Volunteer Lock Keeper who covers the stretch from Stenson to Derwent Mouth. As at Monday 16 Apr 18 the River Trent has re-opened. great vlog guys keep them coming

...not sure why, but you crazy kids get me writing some absolute tosh!
I dunno, but time to sing the Nub Nub Song! M
Brilliant; my next project: a jazz reharmonization of the Nub Nub.
Just need the Modal Nodals in backup. Those cats got lobe, as they say. M
Very hip, man.
My daughter has marked all the good chip shops on my map of the trent and Mersey, when you do the northern bit towards the anderton boat lift I will pass on her tips lol. another great vlog, cruising in the sun makes the day so much better.. the mooring at the beginning looks nice.
Yeah, there's basically nothing better than a quiet cruise under a warn sun! M
Minimal List to true
Pleased the weather is improving guys. Try Wharf House chandlers at Braunston for the paint (if you are ever in that area) they seem to have most colours.

Chip Buttys, the food of gods, try with salad cream 😂
Yum! M

He is a good boy everyday in that sense! Jo
Thumbs Up, Bell, ETC, I do not have any social media, Facebook, Twitter ETC

Great video missed you guys by a week we were at Mercia las week looking at 3 boats no luck so far! But Bicho did like the idea!
Same advice we got, see as many as you can... spend time getting a feel for a lot of them and how very different they can be. Buying a narrowboat is like finding an ideal pair of shoes, it's a slog! M
Part of me wanted you to do a walkthrough of the boat yard......live and dream etc :)
They are pretty interesting places I guess. And so varied. Jo
Just your views of the price and styles of boats.....for the non-informed like me :)
It's pretty huge, and just teaming with people on a sunny Saturday morning! Worth a visit, but not sure I'd want to live there! M
Amazing skill to develop! M
Yous guys "need" a FRS radio set for George walks, and "come back" calls!
You are probably right! Jo
frijoles suave - Question.... has George jumped into the canal after a duck/etc while the boat was in motion yet?
No... he has once jumped off into the water to swim to shore while we were close to it, and he's once left off the boat to shore in a lock (after somehow opening a door), but at that point the boat was stationary. Lucky so far no in motion duck chases. Though he has thought of it. M
As you read the book, i would be interested in your personal additional comments or changes to the book discriptions for each location? Also intro footage was great start.
As I can't remember exactly what we were speaking about in this one that involved a book, which book? Sorry. M
Your boating book that you keep referring to.. what would you add, change, or correct,,,from that boating book that you refer to.
Ahh, the Nicholson's Guides (sorry thought you might be talking about my very brief mention of the Hobbit)... actually they're very good, so we wouldn't change much, except that ours are somewhat out of date. Hope that answer your question. M
Thanks I now have the Mos Eisley Cantina song in my head. That said there is a bit of a Chewie resemblance going on there M 😁
GROOOONNKKK! M
you might think this a weird question, but what do you do with your solid waste.
Heh, not that weird. 10:57 not the only ones to bash the cut
Oh no. It seemed to have been a common mistake! Jo
mummy mummy whats the big shiny thing in the sky????? i may have thought of another beer for Michael to try.
Oh goodie!! Lord knows I haven't made a funny face on video recently! ;-) M
Fantastic vlogs your live my dream life keep them up just wanted to ask what mpg you get on a boat and how much fuel you can carry cheers
Is that the Mersey of the song "Ferry across the Mersey"? If so, where's the ferry?
Well, yes, eventually ... the Trent and Mersey joins the River Trent with the River Mersey, but the Mersey is way up near Liverpool, other end of the canal from where we are. For all I know the ferry is still running up there, but it will be a while before we find out for ourselves! M
After you’d moored up at 13:50 I was surprised how much your boat moved when the other boat(s) passed by - were they flat out at 4 mph or was that just the norm for a passing boat ?
Pretty much the norm, they were moving at about the right speed for passing moored boats. These things push a lot of water around! M
weren't you guys using walkie talkies in the beginning? no longer? between boat and path?
We have never used them although Michael has always thought they would be a good idea. I am coming round to his way of thinking. Jo
No idea why I thought you had them early on. Seems like a great idea for safety.
Just love the country side. So different from even the small farm towns here in the Midwest. Also, Michael what are your tattoos day or form. I apologize if this question is off base but have been curious. Thanks Russ

The one on my right is the Chinese for "Compassion" with the Latin phrase "Nunc Scio Quid Sit Amor" through it, basically meaning "Through Compassion I've learned what love is."
I've got quite a few tattoos, and basically they're all life lessons I decided I write down before I forgot them. M
Minimal List. Thank you for the answer. I love tattoos with meaning or a story behind them. Instead of just a random picture of design. Well once again thank you and I'll be patiently waiting the next post
Yeah I've never been into it for the art, it was more of a "just learn something you'd rather never repeat? Write it down!" sort of thing. M
Frank.
Well seeing as my productivity, in terms of boat maintenance, has been zero for the last six month. It only has one way to go! Jo
Do you always put your mooring pins in vertically? I was always lead to believe that a 45 degree angle was better.
Depends a lot on the ground conditions. 45 degrees is a bit steep, but some angle away from the line axis is a good idea, especially with softer ground (where we also drive a second pin through the first), but in this very firm ground the angle doesn't really help as much, but does make them a lot harder to remove. M
You are now listening to the A50. Only mildly better than the A38.
So that explains the slight change in the tone of the hum! Jo
Thanks for the vlog, what knots do you use for moorings and for locks? did you ever get that bit of metal out of the top of your leg?
Don't use knots that much, just some hitches. The main one is called the Canalman's Hitch, and it's the only one we've (sort of) remembered. And no, I'm still magnetic. M
Btw Michael love the corporate muppet shirt! Or is it a Muppet MIB shirt? ( Muppets In Black?)
It's actually Reservoir Muppets. Mr. Yellow, Mr. Orange, Mr. Green, Mr. Red, and Me. COOKIE!! M
I see your “middle of nowhere” and raise you my recent trip to Iqaluit. ;) Middle of nowhere, in the UK. Pfft.
Every country has its middle of nowhere. Well, maybe not the Vatican. M
laughing.
Love the one day vlogs, even though they are as long as the session ones. Heres a question for you, i noticed that some of the locks have a single gate on one end and double on the other end. Is there any reason for this ?.
Hi darran, I hope you don't mind that I chime in. My narrowboat experience is quite low but I was into that topic a bit and I hope that my answer is correct:
#1 Single gates often occur at the "upper" part of narrow locks.
Narrowboat Simulator that makes sense, thank you
Really!! I was only trying to help you in the lock!!!
Only joking 😀
Heh. M
I have to ask. Foxes Afloat and David Johns have done vlogs on their loos so I get the Elsans, composting and pump out loos but you seem to speak about only the liquid containers. Are you being polite?😎
The liquids need emptying every few days but the solids only need emptying every couple of weeks so I guess we mention that less often
Yes, I agree, it's ruining water.
Exactly!! M
We are both vegetarians but love chip shop chips (when cooked in oil)
I am learning I have little control over the length of vlog.
You should have not sped up Jo talking about the bossy guy at the lock. I would have liked to have heard what she had to say.
you are the bees knees
😊
Think you should rename George .Seems like you should have named him "Riley" as He lives the life of "Riley " lol
George meme...'I am the Hunter'
"Me am the Hunter. Me am the eater of balls. Me am the remover of Leash!" M
:)
Well I hope My Alter ego did not disturb Micheal (did I spell that right) with his twitter troll of George attacking him. It was meant in jest.
Taken in jest too! No worries!
Ruining water---really?! Come on now! Tell us how you really feel! LOL
Haha! Jo
It has to be said I'm afraid...
SUBTITLES...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...Too aweful!!
They shouldn’t show automatically. You may need to check your settings. Jo
yesssssss, you can turn it off ;-)
I'm sorry folks--it seems that I have made a mistake here.
