I’d have been perfectly happy with the hire boaters - you need to tie up better if you’re that close to the lock wash. Most of the bad tempers on the canal comes from people who should know better and many hirers I’ve met are better cruisers than privateers!

I’ve been hiring narrow boats since 1976 so consider myself experienced. I also completed RYA helmsman course. I do find canal boat snobbery rather boring and unnecessary. In my many years experience I have witnessed more boating mishaps from boat owners than hirers. Everybody makes mistakes. Get over it
Nothing to see here Stan, keep movin' right along. The ONLY slight incompetence I saw, was on the part of the ascending boats crew. He was trying to hang on to a twenty ton boat just by standing on the towpath and pulling on the centre line. I'm pretty sure there was a ring there and he should have used it. Then, when the descending boat exited the lock, quite rightly leaving the gates open, the ascending crew walked away from the boat without a windlass so, much good he was going to be working the lock. The crew on board acted so slowly, they had to throw a windlass onto the bank. Always a good move. Apart from indecision and inexperience, mostly on the part of the ascending boat, I saw no "Disaster controlled".
@@sambelfie2693 I mean, sure, shit happens. It’s when you post angry videos to UA-cam proclaiming your expertise and blaming the wrong people that that excuse doesn’t really work, though.
I spent 2 years travelling the canals up and down the country and we liked the hire boaters. Especially on the double width locks. They usually have lots of eager crew to do the locks. I found the problem was with the shiny boat brigade who would normally appear at weekends and would have an attitude of self importance. Probably not as bad as the plastic boat owners on the Thames but still as annoying. I 've had a few near misses where shiny boats have forced their way through where I have had the right of way. Yeah. I'd rather have a hire boater near me.
I suspect that the only near disaster here, was in Stans underpants as he feared the worst for the boat. There really didn't appear to be any drama other than a slight drift out at the bow and certainly nothing close to a disaster. It takes all sorts I suppose.
The hire boat users, opened the bottom gate paddles, ignorantly and incompetently far too swiftly, causing an excessive and dangerous current, forcing the moored boat adrift. Let's hope you are never, ever allowed to hire a narrowboat.

The users of hire-boat ‘Green Woodpecker’ acted irresponsibly, opening the gate paddles fully immediately, creating a fast current, rather than gradually, knowing there was a boat below (‘Lucy Locket’), which could have been forced from its mooring.
