Jesus Christ that Roz laughter was legitimately terrifying. I always pictured Roz coming out of the womb with a tenured engineering professorship and an inability to convey verbal tone, so him going full Joker on us then almost immediately returning to monotone was some truly Lynchian stuff.

As a zoomer, 9/11 for me was a vague notion of something bad going on on the TV, and being told to go in the basement and watch blues clues instead of going to pre-k, so pretty winner day for me. Then I lived my whole life in a police state, so I'm going to say that blues clues time wasn't really worth it.

My experience as a millennial in the US was confusion what the big deal was. My notion of war came from depictions of ww2 with the bombings of Britain and pearl harbor and such. I was under the impression that war was just 2 countries bombing each other until one of them said uncle basically. I genuinely couldn't quite get the idea that the US had just gotten used to fighting wars all over the world with no major direct consequences back home.

As someone who drafts up As Builts as a side gig, I can attest to the poor quality of old drawings, and even modern drawings. A thing to remember for those unaware, the as built drawings are corrected from initial plans based often upon the sketches of building contractors with limited drawing tools. So understanding the MS Paint like simple lines and shapes as complex diagrams (often without critical measurement or accurate locations) is a major part of the process. The state of the original plans can also be awful (As per those seen in this vid).
The worst I came across was a rising conveyor system that fell or lifted to 2 different conveyors; this system had complex measuring and guard systems in place as well. The sole remaining diagram of this system was a scan of a bad photocopy; this drawing was difficult to read when clean let alone with copy degradation, basically had to redesign to system off photos then work back to fit the original drawing

The best explanation of "what happened" I've ever seen wasn't anything made post 9/11, but an old black and white documentary made during the construction of the towers. In it they kept repeating and were very proud of their system of load bearing walls and how they allowed for more usable floor space. And it also made it obvious why removing essentially an entire side of the tower's _load bearing_ exterior structure and setting it on fire would cause, you know, problems.
Really wish I could find that documentary - it was quite good, and (used to be?) on UA-cam.

The Citigroup building isn't quite the same scale as a potential WTC controlled demolition but it is still interesting to note that for those three months that there was virtually no other union welding done within hundreds of miles because all of them were in the Citigroup building 12-18 hours a day for three months. In the case of WTC, it wouldn't be the black suit ruling class with the skill and knowledge to rig a building to blow up it would be hundreds of blue collar workers or military demolitions experts. That's not a conspiracy that is compatible with basic logic let alone logistics.

Also, just a little fun bit to add to the slide about the emergency response, that board on the left that says "Fire Command Post" is how the FDNY deployed units at the time. It's a part of the unit called "field comm" that my father once was deployed to as a Lieutenant. Field comm was, and still is, deployed to all fires greater than 3 alarms, in order to coordinate responses and become the central communication hub for those big fires, and, at that time consisted of a single lieutenant (the guy with the black helmet in that shot) with radios bandoliered across his chest, like a fucking cowboy, staring at a suitcase with a magnetic whiteboard on it. That magnetic whiteboard has drawers with numbered magnets for every single fire company in new york city on it, each about the size of a chiclet, that would be arranged to show the position of the fire companies at the scene. Now, on the inside of it, the lieutenant in charge would arrange the magnets on top of a picture of a "new law" tenement building, which was already pre drawn for the lieutenant using it, for any other type of building, the lieutenant would have to use a dry erase marker, or clip a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper to the inside in order to plan their means of attack. This Lieutenant, using this one whiteboard, was responsible for managing at the scene, 214 units, composed of 112 Engine companies, 58 Ladders, 5 Rescues, 7 Squads, 4 Fireboats, multiple Chiefs, and various other units. Compounding this is the fact that the change of tours, the "shift change" for the Fire Department happens at 9 am. So, many of these companies had double the number of firefighters they usually would have standing around, and seeing a fire like this, would just all go because firefighters basically just love doing this. This one guy, playing with his magnets, was the entire coordination between the chiefs, dispatch, OEM (the office of emergency management), the commissioner, and all of the firefighters on scene. They didn't get a laptop until a few years later I believe.

      I have to soft disagree.
The amount of property damage didn't really mean as much as that, as intended, they struck at a symbol (of American capitalism) in a big, flashy way.
Then, as we know, rather than trying to instill calm courage and solidarity, our government stood up and said what amounted to "EVERYBODY PANIC! (oh, and btw gimme your rights)" before giving them an enemy to attack (in an overreaction way) before the fight-or-flight response could settle down.
As a counterpoint, we've had natural (and not so natural) disasters before and since that have done comperable amounts of property damage in big flashy ways that haven't caused us to take issues like climate change seriously yet, much less drone strike Exxon's corporate offices.
As a side note, this makes the corporate media and Bush administration complicit in Al-Quaida's terrorism in a philosophically-interesting, accessory-after-the-fact way.

As built story. I was the Assistant Director of Security for s shopping mall built in the 60s and added on over the years. The I never saw the plans, I only knew how electrical, water, and Fiber was run because I looked for it myself or talked with Technicians who put it in.
One day the newly hired fire system inspection company came to test a building that was recently renovated the year prior. They were given the 1st revision plans made 1 year before construction, so they were a little off. Luckily I had been there for the whole renovation so I took one look and realized how bad they were. At least 3 walls hadn't been built that were on the plan, and several smoke detectors were not installed because the building was grandfathered in, so they didn't need to add them. Suffice it to say I spent more time helping contractors understand the building then run a security department some days.

The garage building across from where I grew up (Bellamy Loop) had to be rebuilt in the 2000s after it started crumbling and the street constantly grows a bubble because it was built on a large estuary lol. Also my playareas and the green spaces were obliterated during the 90s because all the pipes were rotting and had to be replaced. The green spaces have only been fully restored in the last five years, but they've done a nice job. "...scanned, saved as a low-resolution .pdf..." The large-format scanner can actually scan to 300 dpi or better. But the default setting is 150 dpi monochrome bitmap, and the person doing the scanning would have to poke through two or three screens to reset it so anybody can actually read any of the numbers in the .pdf, and you can explain how to do this to that person a hundred times, but all your scans are coming out at 150 dpi anyway.
"...Contractors are given these designs and then throw them out..." as part of the 1.3 GB .zip file containing 9,400 files and subdirectories, supplied to the surveyor the night before his crew is supposed to tight-stake the grid lines.
"...and work from actual field conditions, requesting change orders as needed..." Then contractors receive copies of these change orders, which they never circulate either to the surveyors laying out forms or to the guys nailing the forms together.
"...and cursing design professionals all the while..." which is the advantage to working late. Everyone else has gone home, you're all alone in the office. At a certain point your hands are shaking too much to point the mouse, but you don't have to hold it in. You can yell until you're hoarse. Then your hands shake less for a while.
"...Once the work is substantially complete, design professionals return to survey the work completed..." Field crews are sent to survey the completed work, which has been buried or walled in or is in some other way inaccessible.
"...and create a new set of as-builts, based on the original photocopied set..." and a great deal of creative imagination.

@@EmeraldLavigne Kinda-sorta. Immediately post-war they were responsible for ramping it up as they seized power, as it was a useful way to consolidate their grip. Prior to the rise of the Taliban, Afghanistan had one of the most diverse agricultural economies and was relatively drought resistance because there was a traditional reliance on nut trees when a regular drought swept through and they couldn't do normal farming things. But the Taliban went through and cut down those trees and forced people to grow opium, which they sold on the black market to but food to sell back to the people. But once the Taliban was pretty much finished consolidating themselves they offered to end their opium industry to receive American recognition and funding and was even talking about western economic investment from multi-nationals. Under the UN they reduced their opium production significantly, but not totally and to try and bring back the old farming.
Of course the US didn't care and we bombed them out of existence anyways and opium production rebounded.

Alcohol and narcotics use in Islam can get complicated. From Alice's casual drinking as she admits and is shared by Muslims in Central Asia and the Tuareg Berbers of North-Western Africa. Opium consumption is no different, and while different interpretations of Islam may crack down harder than others, so can they be more liberal depending on conditions or cultural factors. For instance: opium has been long a cultural drug of choice in Iranian/Persian society for millenia and even after their conversion to Islam has been a major component in Iranian society.
According at least to the book Politics of Heroin (a very comprehensive overview of opium and Heroin at least so far as the CIA was involved) one of the things the Islamic Republic of Iran did not ban when it came to power was opium consumption, which had been previously illegalized by the Shah over concerns on the effect opium had on the quality of his soldiers. Otherwise opium was consumed very openly in Iran and Iran was the last country to run an official state monopoly. If you were even a guest of a Persian aristocrat it was very common to be offered to join in smoking and they had pipes set aside for guests.
Things currently seem to have changed in Iran again though in regards to opium and the state K guess has started cracking down in the past decade or so. But for a long time the West could be willfully ignorant or Afghan production because Iran absorbed much of it.
On a similar note, and not as severe as opium: I knew an Egyptian who explained to me how the current Egyptian government is pretty chill with and I think even legalized marijuana. It's one of the cash crops farmers now are allowed to cultivate a little but of now because they are otherwise obligated to grow according to state mandate. Before hand during the swinging free market period of the Mubarak "government" they only ever just grew cotton and Egypt was not good independent. So, different strokes.
I think also hashish filled niche too left behind by not being allowed to consume alcohol since I'm thinking about it. But all I'm really just reminded of is an essay I heard exists by Walter Benjamin about it and is supposedly such a good essay on hashish it's gotten people on it, or back on it.

E111 is a food colouring commonly used in orange flavoured sweets and controversial for its alleged hyperactivity affect on small children.

The thing about that list of "architects and engineers" who have questions about 9/11 is that there are actually very few credentialed architects and engineers on that list. Even among their vetted signatories, they are usually people who have never worked on a high-rise building, or they simply aren't in the civil engineering field. And the wider petition allows anyone to sign it from the website, all you need is an email address.
This is a very old rhetorical trick for conspiracy theorists. Creationists do this all the time, producing lists of hundreds of "biologists" (many of whom turn out to be dentists) who reject the evolutionary model of human origins. It's all so they can trick people into thinking they represent honest intellectual inquiry.

It being an "inside job" has nothing to do with structural engineering tho. I don't get the focus on how they fell. There's dozens of financial and criminal incentives to bring the towers down. The towers were scheduled for ridiculously expensive asbestos removal soon after they fell, and insurance was upped on the towers just before the attack. A few terrorists didn't organize a nationwide attack alone. It took a sizable concerted effort to plan and accomplish, obviously. The only question is 'why'

I know I said it isn’t ‘Jewish Sainthood’ but’s it’s kind of like exhuming that really nice old Catholic lady who passed away years ago and seeing that she hasn’t decomposed at all. Thank you all for actually having a reasoned, logical, and factual discussion about 9/11. I had just started engineering school when it happened, and our Materials and Manufacturing class had covered tensile strength, deformation, and the many phases of steel, just that Monday. I was fascinating, if not sad, to see that education demonstrated to the real world. The next class we discussed what happened, what was likely the cause, and how the "test" that people were already claiming had occurred had no likelihood of being accurate or of any bearing on what actually happened.
One note about WTC 7, it was reported that it contained a large cache of Diesel Fuel for a backup generator for the Con-Ed station, and to power the complex during a power outage. That was reported to have been a contributing factor to why the fire burned so long and so hot.
I appreciate the background on Co-Op city and the downright criminal construction practices in NYC at the time. I don't think most people thought of those things, or would even factor in that shitty contractors could have been a factor in a building's favor. I also recall it being reported after 9/11 that the original design for WTC1 and WTC2 did call for concrete in the core, but that was changed during construction. I wonder if it even matters, if they concrete would have provided enough extra strength to the buildings.
Again, great episode, and great show.

Believe it or not when you use jet fuel to ignite the tallest filing cabinet in the hemisphere, the fire burns hot enough to weaken steel

That comment reminds me of a _Thunderbirds_ episode where a guy was blackmailed into doing some industrial espionage with a bomb collar on his wrist, and instructed to leave the bomb in the old paper archives once he's made the transfer.
Cue a giant explosion and conflagration. Luckily it's the nighttime so the only people that have to be rescued by International Rescue supertech are in the elevator shaft.
      Good episode.
TLDR: Tower fires are hell on earth.

Also, a wide-body jet flying at high-speed does a fuck-ton of damage to a terribly designed tower.

The only reason I remember that it was on a Tuesday is because Battlebots was on the same night, and after getting home from school I was wondering if it would affect the episode.

I remember the death of Princess Diana being a founding cause of my anti monarchy leanings because they cancelled all the cartoons that day to show endless footage of it.

Same for me and Knight Rider.
Turns out it was right on the cusp of a channel changeover. No more Knight Rider either way.

Roz blew my eardrums out while ordering food and I ripped my headphones out frantically. Then the cashier asked if I was alright, I blame Roz for my embarrassment at the local Burger King.

Conspiracy theories are funny. The blow outs of the windows while the building falls could be explained by a 5th grader. We all know heat rises. But it can't rise when hundreds of tons are falling down into it. The weight and pressure are too great, so the heat and gases are pressed downward, where they look for another escape, the windows. That's why you see explosions coming out of the windows. The people on those floors were probably killed by the pressure of the heat and gases before the concrete and steel even reached them.

I came for an episode about jet fuel and steel beams and stayed for a history lesson about lower Manhattan. I am not mad about it. Thanks to the guest for his knowledge.
