  • The pre-AI Nikkor-N 24mm f/2.8 was introduced in 1967 and remained in production for ten years before being replaced by the AI version with a modified optical formula, which eventually became the AF version.

This is a BEAUTIFUL lens. I have one, Nikon original AI ed. It makes a beautiful photos and it very well built. I have somewhere close to 20 older Nikkor MF lenses. I have taken them all apart for cleaning , regreasing. The older lenses are of a better quality, more copper inside and just wonderful lenses. I love them.

Some of my favorite shots were taken with a pristine copy of the N.C. with the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. It is a gorgeous lens that performs beautifully. I'm with you Brian.

Just took delivery of the NC version of one of these lenses on Brian's recommendation.
Gorgeous lens with great image quality and I'm really delighted with it.
A great channel to be subscribed to if you want to avoid the flashy waffle and get proper information. Thanks Brian!

I believe the CP-4 is in fact the case for that filter. They run about $20.00 on eBay (2024) mint condition.

Great video, thanks for introducing this lens -- it's definitely on my shortlist. About the polarizer, I have one as well -- it came with a Nikkor-S 35mm f/2.8 I purchased on eBay. The polarizer also came in the same "CP-4" case as yours, so I think it's likely that's the model name.

That was my first wide angle lens in 1976. Loved it! After using nifty fifties and a 35 mm lens, this lens was mind boggling. Seemed so wide back then...

I had one of those lenses and it was stolen together with all my other beautiful Nikkor lenses and three F bodies. After seeing your review I'm going to look for one to use on my F2. Thanks Brian, cheers and good luck.

I have one from my 35mm days. I bought a dumb converter to mount it on my Fuji XT20. It was/is a fabulous lens on my Nikon FE, and is equally wonderful on my Fuji where it is approximately a 32mm ish equivalent. The optics are superb and the focus damping is still great after decades of use. It's especially nice at producing moody monochrome images. Another characteristic is that it is as tough as old boots. I still shoot the odd roll of film through the Nikon, but the conveniences of digital mean the Nikon is for occasional use now. Quality vintage glass on current digital cameras = great satisfaction.

I agree those older lenses are fantastic. I have the 24mm AI version and it's one of my favorite. I also love the fact that all of the lenses back then took a 52 mm so all I need are a few filters in my bag. I would love to find one of those polarizers

Great vid. I have this polarizer and its bigger bro (72mm). Mine came with the associated hoods (HN12 & HN13), which are not compatible with the type 2 version of these polarizers that was created afterwards. I always assumed the hard stop on the filter was to allow you to fit the hood in place, but i could be wrong. Having the hood in place creates greater purchase to control the filter effect. I am aware that they also produced a 67mm version of this filter. Not a great deal of info, but its something.

Hi Brian, thanks a lot for this review and the links! You put a lot effort in it. I have the 3.5/28mm version and I’m very happy with it. Best wishes, Ralf

    Hi Brian,
Did you upgrade this lens for indexing with new 'holey' bunny ears for use with FE cameras?
    Thanks for a great video.
    Keep up the excellent work.
    Cheers!

I have a Nikon polarizer/hood thing called the NH-12. It came on my 135mm 2.8 Ai. It has set of scale numbers that correlate to focal lengths 35mm - 200mm which I dont quite understand since it's a rotating linear polarizer.

Thank you. I totally agree with you. This lens does a fantastic work with my D600. IMO the pictures have a very creamy, soft, oniric touch. Really striking.

I have this exact lens and I find it is excellent in the middle and the corners are terrible, even stopped down. I don't know if it's my copy or not.. I think it's heavy field curvature, so as long as you focus on whatever you want and expect everything else to be out of focus it'll be a very good lens.

Really enjoying your channel. I have an entire set of the pre-Ai Nikkor-N's. Single coated versions. I do love them but I would love a set that doesn't "glow" wide open. This video is a great example of my experience - ua-cam.com/video/hIdlbMeLE1c/v-deo.html. I don't find the "glow" is very evident on the takumars and pentax - really curious about the Konica? Would love to know your thoughts! Cheers!
