  • After watching a video by my friend ‪@davidsaylors‬, I decided to buy a Nikon 24mm f/2.8D prime lens. In this video, I unbox it and take it to the market for some Street Photography. I used my old Nikon D800 for the photography in this video.

    I've just bought this 24mm (Nov 2023.) They are super cheap used and because they are 'chipped' they manual focus with Z6 giving a confirm square around your autofocus point in the viewfinder. It works brilliantly. Also works great on my D3S & D3X of course. 😊

    I adapted the Nikon 24mm 2.8 lens to my Fujifilm XH2s. While I do have the iconic Fuji 35mm 1.4, and love it, I find myself going back to this old school Nikon more often than not. With Fuji's focus assist features, it's no problem to nail focus with the old manual lenses.

    I don't miss focus on my D700 and af-d 85mm at 1.4 on moving city traffic. I use continuous 3D tracking with focus lock duration at 5 seconds. I calibrate all my lenses and correct in camera before putting them to use. Even the abysmally slow DC 135mm rarely ever missed. The 24 uses a floating element if I remember correctly and they can in practice get misaligned if they hit something or are dropped. I can't imagine not having a high keeper rate with a 24mm on a D800

    I have the D800, and I believe if you get the battery grip and the en 18a battery(high capacity), you get an FPS boost in crop mode (35mm equivalent); I don't remember if you get an fps boost in full frame. I remember configuring my D800 with the battery grip and this specific battery because of this very reason. People are lucky these days, that the D800 can be had for roughly $500. The D800 is still a very capable camera, and can still carry its own against newer camera. I've captured beautiful images with this camera, and do still use this when I feel like it (I now have the A7Rii).

    Neat, Thanks I have this lens, and like it a lot. i have used on My Nikon D-610 & Nikon 850. On both lens it performs very well. In fact I use it with on Camera Speedlight with a make shift black foam to help me bounce off ceilings & walls for group images. Thanks for your input on this solid built lens.

      Thank you, Adrian! I really do enjoy goofing around with older gear sometimes. As for black-and-white, I converted a few to black and white and then I decided to go ahead and present all of them both ways. After watching your recent videos, I am dying to get out and do some panorama work!

    I have used one of these for a while on a Nikon D7000 and what spectacular results! I like the quality feel of these older AFd lenses compared to the more modern AFs type which feel cheap and plasticky. I have recently got myself a Tamron 17-50 which is more versatile, just as sharp and just as fast at f2.8. Not designed for full frame FX cameras though.

      It is an interesting old lens but if I was shooting in a more serious situation I would definitely use a 24 to 70 F 2.8, Nikon or Canon. Sometimes it’s fun though to use gear that kind of limits you. I thought you would like that shirt! Thanks for watching, Stephen!

    Great shots and stories with the old lens and the Nikon Anvil Shutter camera! lol. . I have to ask, since I have what just about amounts to a phobia about pointing my camera at people, does anyone ever object to you snapping photos of them in such a situation? Most seem to just ignore it. Or are you that slick that they don't notice the camera pointing at them? I'd be interested in knowing your process in getting shots of the people in street photography situations like this.

      Thank you, Bill! The great thing about the Chattanooga market is it’s really crowded and most people don’t pay attention to you at all. I did have one lady say don’t take my picture, I had already made the photo so I deleted it. For the most part nobody even knows I’m taking pictures at all. At the market and crowded situations like that I use wide lenses like this 24. When I walk around in downtown Chattanooga which is not crowded at all, I use much longer lenses because you can’t take a picture of someone from 3 feet away without being very noticed when it’s not crowded. Thanks for watching, Bill!

    Some nice ones there Phil.
    I have the same lens and believe it or not a D800 also , which I now use for landscapes with a 20mm f1.8 g lens.
    The g version of the 24mm is reputed to be much sharper.
    In my openion the d version can be soft, as a matter of fact I find my 24-120 f4 lens sharper at the the 24mm length

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 роки тому

      That’s interesting, I find that my 50 mm F1.8 G is definitely sharper than my 50 mm F1.8 D. So I guess the same thing is true of the 24 mm glass.

    • @GreginMD
      @GreginMD 9 місяців тому

      Yeah, the 24-120 is definitely a nice lens (I have that one also), and while it's not TOO heavy all on its own, when you have your camera bag packed with a few primes instead of zoom lenses, it makes a big difference when you want to pack light.

    The zone focusing in really king in street photography but unfortunately it useles on af nikkor lenses because of disappearing the dof marks .

    24mm is not good for taking people in short distance or portraits. Reason is different angle like see people our eyes, becose two of them from short distance see more. This portraits looks for as like distorted. But is good for architecture with people in distance few metres and nature. Depth of field is big, is posible from 0.5-0.6m to infinity. Nice fotos forixample with flavers front of camera, and mountains in background.

  • @cubanrum
    @cubanrum 2 роки тому

    I prefer the black and white in most of the photos. It almost seems that the black and white are sharper. I just don’t care too much for that lens it reminds me of my 35mm f2.0D which always seem to render all images soft and I was never happy with the sharpness of that lens. You should try zone focus with some modern glass.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 роки тому +1

      I know that my 50 f/1.8G is sharper than my 50 f/1.8D so maybe this D lens isn't sharp either. Seems like when I actually focused and took time with single-point it gave me some nice results. I'm pretty sure that I'm done with zone focus for still photography. I know, critical focus isn't always critical to everyone but for me, zone focus just isn't precise enough. Everyone has to come up with their own philosophy about zone-focus and, after many trials, that's where I ended up.

    • @cubanrum
      @cubanrum 2 роки тому

      @@PhilThach You have to do what makes you happy. You did get me thinking and again another idea for a video. A comparison on sharpness through the focus zone. Like a test chart photo at the far end of the zone, the actual focus and the short end. Now just need time to do it.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 роки тому

      @@cubanrum I have thought about doing that exact thing. This is only in situations where there is a person in the picture. Obviously zone focus is fine for landscape photography. If there’s a person in the shot though, to me, the person should be where critical focus is. So if we were to make a video like that, The subject should be a person that moves about the frame which is pretty much exactly what I did in the lawnmower video, but my point was that video critical focus doesn’t matter as much if the subject is moving around.

    great shots. how is quality of image when compared to 18-55 kit lens at 24 mm?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 роки тому +2

      I would say it is much better at 24 mm than the 18 to 55 kit lens. You have to keep in mind though this is a full frame lens and it is a D lens so if your camera body does not have an internal focusing motor it will not autofocus. D 3000 series and D5000 series cameras will not auto focus this lens, D 7000 series will. Also, this lens will not auto focus on a modern Z series camera with the FTZ adapter. I believe all of the Nikon full frame F mount bodies will auto focus with this lens.

      The "D" solely refers to a distance chip in the lens with communicates to the camera for better flash control. The lenses that aren't "D" are identical except for that.
