    I bought this lens for $100 used about 15 years ago and have used it extensively ever since. It is an excellent lens. Certainly worth getting especially at a good price compared to a new one which is handy when explaining to your wife why you need another lens.

    Nice video! I've got one and I really love the colour rendition. I bought it for the D750, but I find myself using it much more on my APS-C camera as it becomes 36 mm equivalent, perfect as a walk around lens. Compact and light, it doesn't gather attention so it's perfect for street photography. When I want to travel light, with this lens and the 50 1.4D (same as yours), I am well covered 😊.
    If you like close up shots, I definitely recommend you to give a try to the Tamron 35 1.8VC. On the D750 it's tack sharp, stabilized, and focuses down to 20 cm (!). With a lovely bokeh! I really love it.

      Hi Mantanela, yes advantage of the primes definitely is that your kit becomes much lighter than with zooms. I have only shot briefly with the 24mm, but I already now predict it will become one of my favorite lenses!

I gave rhe 90mm to a young friend. Your detailed explaination is very much appreciated. I am looking for D lens in the 105mm Focal length. Really enjoyed your detailed information.

    Got one for 110 Euro today. Looking at the serial number it is an early model but it is in great shape. Glass is intact. Must say that the 24-70mm f2.8 is noticeable sharper when using it on a high megapixel camera as the D850 but on a D700 the difference is not that visible anymore. Stopping down to f5.6 or f8 really helps and that is what you use for landscape pics. And the 24mm is very small so fits in my jacket pocket.

    The years are catching up to me. The thought of bulky zoom lenses with loads of glass are just unappealing to me. Besides my daughter had just busted my 28-300mm FX lens🥲, my mistake for letting her have it. Them mirrorless are just crazy expensive and had features blocked on the more cheaper ones. Might as well switch to prime lenses but I'm not familiar with these dated primes. Thanks for the review..

    Would you recommend a 24mm instead of a 35mm for garden photography ?
    I’d like to know your take on that. Cheers!

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Greg, I have never shot with a 35mm prime, so not sure I am the biggest expert here! However, if garden photography means flower photography as well, then I think that the minimum focus distance could be a differentiation point to compare. The 24mm can go very close to the subject, a feature that many wide lenses share. Not sure this was very helpful!

      @@frederikboving A cropped Nikon sensor. To be precise, I have a Nikon 7000D. I am relatively new to photography and am interested in street photography. I tried the Nikkor 50mm lens (nifty fifty) but the resulting shots were too narrow (probably because of the cropped sensor) and I am mulling over buying the 24 mm f2.8D. Really ret nice review. Thanks a lot for the work.
    Question:
    28mm D vs 24mm D
    I am deciding between these two.
    Can't make up my mind.
    I know I like 28mm because I have a 28-105D as the only zoom I have.
    Not that I think this zoom is bad, it is excellent Walk around. :)
    Buy, I prefer prime for practical reasons. Zoom are just too Dan big and heavy sometimes.
    I currently have 85mm AIs,50mm 1.8G. I shot a lot of people and started to find landscape interesting.
    Many thanks! :D

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  4 роки тому +1

      Uh, deciding betwen 28mm and 24mm is not easy. I understand that size and weight is important to you, so I will refrain from suggesting something even wider like the Samyang 14mm! To choose between 28mm and 24mm depends on your subject and scene in my experience. A too wide lens can actually be a problem because you get a lot of things in your frame and composing can be challenging/frustrating. On the other hand, it is annoying not being able to capture the entire scene, although stitching together a panorama in LR can work if your subject is not moving too much (the ocean is not good for this - a field or a mountain is better). I use the very wide lenses when on the beach taking sunset pictures or pictures of the ocean, in the forest or when on an open field. If such places are not your bag, maybe the 28mm has more uses to you than the 24mm. Hope this helps.

    • @sunzaolive
      @sunzaolive 4 роки тому

      @@frederikboving Thank you Sir!
      You gave me very practical ideas to try.
      From that, I am assuming you think there is very little different between these two lenses, is that assumption correct?
      I will go to the field test in the forest then stitching in LR to get a 24 mm feeling.
      Then do a test with what i have at 28 mm end. Then compare them.
      The zoom has bit distortion as expected and quite a lot vignetting i need to correct in post anyway.
      No wide open F2 there but i guess people do not do that with landscape anyway.
      We shall see if i think it is enough in way of shooting.

      Yes, I think the lens design for the D and the non-D is the same. Nikon is a conservative company and seldom changes their lens design if they can avoid it. I have never missed the distance information, but of course that does not help much if you need it! I think though that you will enjoy the 24mm very much and going to Rome I think it will be a GREAT lens for capturing the many sites in the city! • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  4 роки тому +1

      Hi krpradi! Unfortunately I do not own the 35 mm lens, so I cannot test it. However, the field of view is rather different - the horizontal field of view is 73 degree for the 24mm and 54 degree for the 35 mm, so if you shoot indoor with lots of people, then this is a factor to take into consideration. Another factor is the 35mm which is faster - not much, but some, so if you are not a fan of flashes, then the 35mm might might have an edge here. Hope this helps! All the best!

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  3 роки тому +1

      I think not. The main difference between D and non-D is that the D-version includes distance information (distance to the focus point) that helps the more advanced metering modes (matrix). If you look here: www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html#24 then you can find your own copy based on the serial number. Looks like 9/9 design is constant, but the weight changes a bit, so they may have made minor tweaks for the D-version, but I still think the bottom line is: your are not missing out much if anything.

    what are your thoughts on using this lens with D7500? I would like a 35mm~ ff equivalent but is there any big disadvantage with using on a DX body?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  3 роки тому +1

      No, not really - that is the short answer. Normally I mention that you will carry some glass you don't use when shooting with FF glass on cropped bodies, but in this case the glass is so small that the weight penalty is little. Another warning I normally give is that the AF lens with mechanical AF requires that your camera body has the built in AF motor - which the D7500 has. So no problem there either, unless you have a second body that is a D3x00 or D5x00, because then you are left with manual focus. And then I also remind that when it comes to DoF equivalence you have to apply the crop factor here as well, so in terms of the images the lens will produce on a cropped sensor you are looking at a 36mm f/4.2 FF equivalent lens when it comes to field of view and DoF. Hope this helps!

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  4 роки тому +3

      You're right! What? I saw another video where he recommended it - not super consistent. I think his main gripe is the fact that it is an odd focal length. Many who have the 16 mm Fujinon lens (APS-C i.e. the same as 24 mm FF) makes the same remark. Because it sits right between medium zoom and wide angle. Ken Rockwell calls this lens "the only wide lens you will ever need": www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/24mm-f28-afd.htm (Scroll down to recommendations). Opticallimits seems to agree with Ken: www.opticallimits.com/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/210-nikkor-af-24mm-f28d-review--test-report?start=2. I think some of its bad reputation is due to a construction error where the CRC loosens itself and gives all sorts of issues. So I still think that provided you get a good copy, this is an excellent bang-for-the-buck lens.

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC 4 роки тому +1

      @@frederikboving Yes, Ken is sometimes self-contradictory, and he often defends it with comically absurd word salad. And as you say, it's all about value. Looking at the shots you took with it, I'd have little hesitation in buying it if I didn't already own a Nikkor wide. Personally, I'm not a fan of 24mm focal length, but heck, there are very, very few genuinely dud Nikkors in terms of optical quality.

    Love your voice and accent, and your presentation and explanations very nice. But @01:28 😳😱 Never ever set an uncapped lens down on any surface, especially the rear element as you did here. Will it automatically do damage, well not always, but there is that one time when there is dirt or something unseen, and then it’s too late, damage done! Just FYI, and I see YT creators do this all the time.
    I appreciate you leaving the cavity of your lovely D750 ( great body ) open for purposes and demonstration of your video, but that’s a no no. I don’t know what it is with Nikon bodies, but I ‘religiously’ avoid any extra seconds of open time when swapping out lenses on any of my Nikon bodies! Again, just FYI.
    You’re obviously a smart man and very capable, but there are those individuals out there that might be watching, and think it’s ok ? No offense intended! I wish you well and Oeace and good Health! 👍👍👍✌🏻📷

      Hi George! Thank you for your comprehensive post - you obviously care a lot for your gear and you are truly concerned by my handling of the camera gear! Good points! I am certainly not one that baby my gear and I often change lenses in the field (on beaches!), so I am really giving my gear a hard time. Not an excuse, more an explanation. I will put a small disclaimer into the description of the video, based on your comment. Unfortunately it is not possible to upload a new version of the video (in that case I could simply edit the troublesome parts out), so adding some wording is the best I can do. Thank you for your feedback and carefully watching of the videos!

      @@frederikboving Hi Frederik! I sure hope I have your name correct! It was great to receive your very nice reply, and I thank you for it! Yes, I do care for my gear, due to it’s expense. I do use my gear, but I’ve learned from my past mistakes of poor or improper handling. I do tend to be OCD when it comes to my gear. They are meant to be used, and how you or anyone else chooses to use their gear, if of course your business.
      I really appreciate your kind reply. I only comment when I really like a video, or I am concerned with how something is presented. I am not an expert in anything. I merely try to help others, and isn’t that what is should be all about?
      You have earned my respect, Sir, and a new Subscriber! Thanks again!
      Best to you and yours!

    why is the Nikon AF 24mm F2.8 non-D version so bad aside from the age? how does the D and the non-D version verry besides age.

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  2 роки тому +1

      I think the main difference between D and non-D is that the D has distance information which the camera can read via the CPU connector. And then the D version has better build quality with - as I recall it - a wider manual focus ring. But I would think the optics are very similar. Nikon only very seldom change the lens design.

      @@frederikboving I found a Non-D version that was in the box and in mint condition with the metal lens hood, sort of like when a person buys a lens and does not like it and stores it in a closet for years then finds it and sells it. #NewOldStock. so naturally I'm Hyped and want to find out all I can about the lens.

      @@atruceforbruce5388 It's one of my favorite lenses, especially because the minimum focus distance is short and that I really like in a lens. Personal preference territory of course.

      In general, D stands for Distance Encoding. Which in human language would be:
      "these lenses let the camera know the distance at which the lens is focused."
      according to my dad, "D" is useful especially while using flash light to get a correct EV.
      I know that:
      85mm af and af-d have a bit pro with the D. there is an extra glass at the rare end which stops dust into the lens more effectively than AF version.
      For this 24mm,
      I got an AFD after watching Fredrick's video. Nothing to complain at all. It is very good.
      I have a DF, which low light capability is crazy. but megapixel is not much.
      Fredrik also mentioned the age between af and af-d
      AFD is "younger".
      In my opinion, the older the higher risk that there is haze, fugues and so on. (statistically saying. :) ofc there is exceptions. )

      If we are talking Nikon, then there are 2 lenses that are considered "classic": the 14-24 and the 16-35. I have a review of the latter here: ua-cam.com/video/wWU-c3eJQyk/v-deo.html - I did not go for the 14-24 as it is a heavy lens and has curved front glass that makes filter mounting a bit cumbersome. Hope this helps!

      @@miglito76 If you want to keep the price down, the vintage primes are what you need to look for. It depends on how wide you want to go, but if you want to go a little wider than 24mm, then the Nikon 20mm f/2.8 is an alternative. Ken Rockwell has a review of it here: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/20af.htm. I found a used copy over at mpb.com here: www.mpb.com/en-eu/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-lenses/used-nikon-fit-lenses/nikon-af-20mm-f-2-8/sku-1283177/ - hope this helps!
