- I recently watched *HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON* for the first time and I absolutely love it! Why am I so emotional about it? I blame Patches.
In this video, I'm sharing with you my reaction to watching *HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON* for the first time. I seriously can't stop crying every time I watch it! If you're a fan of the movie, then I guarantee you'll love this video!
How to Train Your Dragon is a 2010 American animated action fantasy film loosely based on the 2003 book of the same name by Cressida Cowell, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois from a screenplay by Will Davies, Sanders, and DeBlois, and stars the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig. The story takes place in Berk, a mythical Viking village; Hiccup, an undersized teen wishing to become a dragon slayer like the other Vikings, injures a rare Night Fury dragon but is unable to bring himself to kill it. He instead helps and befriends the dragon, and quickly discovers that things are not exactly as they seem in the conflict between Vikings and dragons.

RE-UPLOAD! The first version had a weird box in the middle of the screen I didn't mean to be there. Enjoy!
Okay I was wondering that too when I watched the 1st one😂😂
@@myranda_anne264 I'm a hot mess
I was wondering about that. I figured it was there to prevent copyright but the more I thought about that I figured that was probably just a mistake.
Fun fact, there is apart where toothless is jumping around. And his tail is flapping all around. That is actually modeled off of one of the animators, cats who had a piece of tape stuck to its tail.
That’s sooo cute!
Yeah, I thought you might like that since that's why I think most of the dragons in this movie act like cats
I'm pretty sure the piece of tape thing was only used for gift of the night fury tho?
"When did THAT happen?" it's generally agreed that Toothless was so desperate to grab him that he pulled sliiiiiiiightly harder than he should have - that, or it just kind of "happened" during the fairly uncontrolled landing, what with Toothless being rudderless and all.
I mean you can by the velocity that hiccup is falling and toothless is going after him that he wouldn’t have had time to just naturally wrap around him before the full fire hit them, so toothless grabbing the nearest limb and yanking towards himself makes perfect sense
And as for the "just kinda happened" one, Hiccup's leg could've struck the ground in the uncontrolled landing or been burned by the flames, and still been attached to him, but damaged so severely that they had to remove it.
The reason why they don't like 'eel' is because the dragons know that it is poisonous to them. In fact in one of the episodes of the tv show that spun off from this series, and if I remember correctly, Hiccup is attacked by a number of eels and Toothless had to kill one of them and immediately spat it out but still had a severe reaction to it.
Fun fact! The orginal books this series is based on came with trading cards! The books are pretty different but both interpretations of the story are fantastic! I like how book toothless is a teeny tiny brat who insults everyone (book dragons have their own language, which book Hiccup learned)
2:27 "Why didn't he come with a weapon?"
Because he is the weapon.
How To Train Your Dragon
A near Masterpiece of a trilogy. It's enough to make a grown man cry
100%!!!!
Hiccup lost his leg at the end of the fight with the big dragon when he was falling through the fire. Toothless' wing didn't quite cover him all and it burned off. It is acknowledged when Stoick thanks Toothless for saving Hiccup and Gobber says, well, most of him.
Ahhh yes, one of, if not thee best animated trilogy. Grew up with them and love them til this day👏🏽 enjoying your content Steph 🤙🏽
Thanks for watching!!
this, and close behind comes kung fu panda...
Fun fact: Toothless hesitating before touching his snout to Hiccup's hand was actually an animation bug, but the animators liked it so much they decided to keep it.
This gets repeated everywhere, but it's not true. The hesitation was intentional, the only animation "glitch" was in an earlier scene where the camera appeared to pass through Toothless's wing in the pre-render.
@@joehoy9242Yea, that was intentional. There aren't any glitches but there is one "mistake" they left in according to the film commentary. During the Downed Dragon his eye was supposed to be closed the entire time but the open eye was seen in a pre-screening and the audience loved it so they kept it.

Toothless was trying to draw Hiccup’s face 😂❤
Omgggg hahahahahaha! I never would have gotten that 😂
😊It Was Adorable! 🥰
It was abstract art, you can make out the nose 😜
You're right, Toothless is basically a 30+foot long winged cat.
"I'm gonna cry"
Yeah, basically everyone at that point. It's one of the most effective emotional moments in cinema.
You're Gonna Love The HTTYD Franchise! The 3 Movies, 2 Series And The Short Movies. 😊🐉
I can't wait!!!
much more, the books it is based on...
The guy who created Toothless is the same guy who created Stitch
Omggggg I love that!!
Glad to see this back up so fast, I'll redo my last comment rq incase you didn't have a chance to see it lmao
They actually modeled the scene with toothless jumping around to one of the animator's cats who had some tape stuck to it's tail, cats were generally a big inspiration for the dragon behavior so you're totally right about them basically just being cats!
Ugh I love that. There’s times I’ve been wondering about maybe a few dog-like aspects but glad to know I was spot on.
@@thebestofstephx well, in the second film, toothless (and other dragons) start to be more dog-like
I love this franchise, so many good memories :) its fanbase is indeed huge, a big reason for that is not only these cinematic masterpieces but also the 2 TV series (Riders/Defenders of Berk by Cartoon Network and Race to the Edge by Netflix) that takes place between the first and second movie, also there is a lot of shorts, it expands this universe quite a lot, it's not necessary to enjoy these movies, but seeing the heroes and Berk grow up and evolve is wonderful, they knew how to maintain it alive between the movies release :)
When a big franchise has a success, Dreamworks like to expand their universes (money) ^^
I just found out about all the other additional content. I probably won’t react to them but I’m exited to watching them on my own sometime!
there's also another series that takes place like 1,300 years after the events of the third and its called Dragons: The Nine Realms
13:33
its the emotional yet angry compliments for me
You are so precious 🫰🏾😂
Haha thank you! If I didn’t find a way to be angry I think I would have just sobbed through the entire film 😭😭
@@thebestofstephx you are gonna love the rest. 😬💜
This is one of my favorite movies/franchises ever! We got the legendary music, the most adorable dragon in popular culture and one of my favorite interspecies friendships in popular culture. Seriously, Hiccup and Toothless' dynamic is so fun to watch! Can't wait to see reactions to the next two movies!
There is actually a few tv series if you want to watch those. They expand the lore and world. Not to mention you get to know the characters a lot better.
And the two little holiday specials too! “THE EGGS EXPLODE?!”
so glad that you decided to check out this franchise. For many reasons it is one of the best franchises, if not THE best franchise out there. It does in fact have some series along with three movies, and a lot of books. Hope you have fun with this!! :]
"you've brought the tiniest sword with you" ...do you mean... a dagger?
Yessss 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Sometimes things come out of my mouth before fully process them
13:17 Toothless:No, You Need Me For Her To Like You, Hiccup! 🐉
19:10 The big dragon is simply too large and heavy, trying to pull up and slow down that quickly tore it apart
Stephanie: It should only be three episodes
Me: *laughs in six seasons of Race to the Edge alone*
I’m sorry Stephanie, I am not letting you out of this one. This franchise is my shit.
lol. I’m probably not reacting to the tv series but I’ll definitely watch them in my own!
@@thebestofstephx you definitely should!! i personally rank race to the edge as higher than the dragon prince or even atla
21:43 It think it's still English but written in a futhark-inspired "runic" script. I'm able to read "triis" (arrow pointing at trees) "kill un sight" (repeated twice, at the left of the trees) and "slisi t[h]ruug[h] full gruun triis" (under the trees). But I agree with your main point, to make it look more nordic.
Yep, thats true. Toothless is based on the lead animators cat.
At the end of the third movie, you should watch the credits. On screen or off, I think you will love them.
Toothless is a legend! Everytime I watch these movies it makes me want him so badly! 🥺
2:24 The Moment That Changed Hiccup's Life Forever.
oh was the black box not supposed to be there-
i thought it was to avoid copyright or something😭
No it was me cause I can’t proof read my videos for crap 😂😂🤦🏻♀️😭😭
lmao I thought it was for copyright too xD
@@wilhelm2411 I had no idea until someone commented asking about it. Y'all I was about to accidentally let that be up there forever if someone hadn't said something 😆
OH MY GOD I SAW THE TITLE, CONSIDERED WATCHING IT (i have seen countless httyd reactions) THEN I SAW YOUR NAME AND I CLICK IMMEDIATELY LOVE YOU OML
I remember that this movie took FOREVER to come out on dvd…..I kept going to the movie theater just so I could watch it again 😂 I ended up seeing it like-7 times before it finally came out on dvd. I love it so much
So hyped to see what you think about this trilogy, because I think it's immaculate. The whole vibe is 'what if we healed from generational trauma accompanied with the greatest score you've ever heard'. I cried so much. 10/10, no notes.
I'm also so happy you commented on that last shot of Hiccup with a missing foot and Toothless with a missing fin leaning on each other as they leave the house, because I genuinely think it's one of my favourite shots in a movie ever.
It’s funny my daughter has a male cat named Patches he pretends he hates laser lights but can’t help to chase after it. The dragons are cat-like because they modeled them after their pet cats. So really this movie was “How to Train Your Cat”. 19:30 remember when Gobber said “we’ll most of him” meaning he lost his leg in the fight. Probably got caught in the holster.
ALSO for point of reference about how Hiccup lost the leg:
if you rewatch the scene (there's also a more blunt mention of it in the second movie), Toothless is the reason he lost his leg.
Toothless was flying fast, but he's still only able to do so much. right before we see the fire engulf the screen, based on positioning of the two, there was only one way Toothless could get close enough to grab and save him:
Grab his foot in his teeth and YANK.
not sure if it was like a...bite foot off or broke it in such a way it was unrecoverable but yea. Toothless was basically forced in that moment to cripple Hiccup in order to save him.
then of course there's also the narrative reason behind it of mirroring eachother by both being disabled in a similar way that you pointed out already :3
(hi yes sorry I'm obsessed with how to train your dragon. it's one of my top 5 anythings of all time ever. if you have a way to, you should also check out the show (which takes place between movie 1 and 2 timeline wise). Fair warning though, dont start with the netflix series 'Race to the Edge'. That's actually season 3. The first two seasons were originally a show on cartoon network called
Dragons: Riders of Berk
and
Dragons: Defenders of Berk
after those 2 you can move to the netflix show
riders and defenders are both...pretty good. but Race to the Edge (which does, within like 30 seconds, expect you to have watched the first two) has SO MANY amazing moments that EASILY stand up beside the movies imo. (and...also has a lot of situations where in some cases it's BETTER than the movies. An example...the 3rd movie's villain is just a worse version of one of the villains from the show. the 'chessmaster/hunter' type. Granted the third movies have a LOT of issues that make a lot of HTTYD fans hate it but thats a whole other story))
Cat owners: they’re all cats!
Dog owners: that was a dog like, that was cat like (and huskies, because those things are basically cats), both dogs and cats do that thing… That’s cool, how they combined the two to make the dragon
There are also 8 seasons of TV shows (Netflix) plus shorts. So... not just 3 movies.
I WAITED FOR THIS FOR SOOO LONG!!! I LOVE YOU
It's not really a plot twist hiccup losing his leg it's from the battle with the big dragon
I remember seeing this on the big screen (movie theater), and I think that the sudden appearance of humongous dragon was much more impactful then. Seeing it on a smaller screen just doesn't seem as scary.
Hopefully you go down the rabbit hole that is how to train your dragon just don't forget the last one homecoming everyone forgets that one
I meeeeean, if you like the series, it doesn’t have to be a short one. There are two canon shows to the movies.
Toothless was modeled after a cat.
🐱🐱
Yess this was one of my favorite Triologys tied with atsv
not me crying to this movie again 🥹🤍🖤
It’s impossible not to 😭
Love your commentaries and I am so excited for this trilogy. Also I think you should totally watch the two series I love them so much and they are so much fun to watch
2:33 He's Stoick, That's Why.
19:27 This Is After Hiccup and Toothless Killed The Red Death.
Now They're Even. 😊
You don't know when Hiccup lost his leg?
If you recall Stoic thanking Toothless for saving Hiccup, listen to what Gobber said next. "Well, most of him."
So, Hiccup must have lost his leg after falling off of Toothless into the big dragons trail of fire.
there's a reason why its my favourite trilogy😊
I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it when in came out. The entire franchise that grew around it is also great (though I have not seen the last couple spin off TV shows). So much great character grow, so much emotion, and such an amazing score.
Pretzels and hummus? Did somebody say ✨Girl Dinnerrr✨
I thought I have seen every HtTYD reactions out there, but here we are. Boy being friends with a creature has been done a lot of times, but this movie does it in such a great way!
Seriously, this is one of the best movie trilogy that exists. Even the TV series is great! The books are vastly different from this, but still very enjoyable 😄
If you have the time, don’t skip out on the series. Riders/defenders of Berk play right after movie 1 and „race to the edge“ plays 3 years later. Then movie 2 and three. The series add so much to the characters especially hiccups friends and his dad.
The soundtrack is AMAZING!!!❤❤❤
I never truely connected with cats when I saw this. I was 19. 33 now and I love my two cats all the more for this movie
19:12 Dragons Aren't Fireproof On The Inside.
Oh. My. God. YES! I absolutely love your channel and I was waiting for this franchise for so long. This is by far my favourite kids film series and I love the fact that one of my favourite reviewers is reacting to it. I'm so excited for you to see the rest of the franchise and I will definitely be sticking around for the reaction vids.
The reason Hiccup won that test against Astrid was because if he didn't win it Astrid would not have hesitated to kill the Gronkle, so despite not wanting to win Hiccup was sort of forced to subdue it before she could.
I look forward to the next two reactions!! Thank you, John Powell for your amazing music!!
The reason why Night Furies can retract their teeth is to protect them from being burnt or melted by their plasma blast.
Yeah, HTTYD is as close to perfect as anything I've seen. Infact, I showed my then mid-80's aged grandfather this movie, then the entire animated TV show, then both the other movies, AND the holiday specials- and he fell in love within the first ten minutes of the first movie. He rarely gets excited about _any_ form of media, unless there's a hockey game on TV, but when I introduced him to the franchise, we ended up spending almost every morning checking out atleast a few episodes, until we binged the entire thing.
_I,_ personally, didn't like some of the 'cringy awkward loser' comedy, but considering the _age_ of the characters, it makes so much sense it'd be stupid for us _not_ to see those kind of interactions. But that's just a personal thing. As far as Gpa's opinion goes, though? I don't think he's ever been this passionate about a show. Hell, he even has a little Toothless plush.
You know something is good, not only when it pulls at your heartstrings, but does so for audiences of ALL ages.
You better do all these movies
oh she has a cat, yea she’s gonna *love* this series
so about Toothless seeming like a cat:
The animators actually VERY closely studied cats to SPECIFICALLY have toothless act a lot like one. so it's 100% intentional
~~as a dog person myself personally, who has nothing against cats but just leans more towards dogs for my own personal 'pet owner' type, I also see some, even if unintended, dog parts too~~
You need to watch the tales of Arcadia franchise I feel like you’d live it and it’s so underrated
NO WAAAAAAY I LOVE THIS MOVIE I LOVE YOU AAAAAH DIOS MIO NO PUEDO CREERLO VAS A AMAR ESTA PELICULA Y LAS OTRAS DOOOOS❤
Hey - there's NOTHING wrong with you! I'm deeply moved by great soundtracks and epic scenes too, it just means we're feeling such things deeply and greatly appreciate art, beauty and awesomeness which is a gift in my opinion, not a weakness or a weird trait.
Others might think it's weird but who cares. ❤❤❤
11:58 Most of the dragons in HTTYD are Cats🐈 While Zym from The Dragon Prince is a Dog! 🐕
John Powell didn’t need to go as hard as he did on the soundtrack
Don't go all eeewww, it is just sashimi!!! 😂
Toothless Puked Out Half Sashimi.
How to Train Your Dragon? More like, How to Make Stephanie Cry, lol.
In all seriousness, I love this trilogy and can't wait for you to see the rest of it.
if you haven't already, you should watch BELLE (2021)! it's AMAZING!
After you watch the movies please oh please no one does it but please watch the series How to Train Your Dragon Riders of berk and How to Train Your Dragon race to the edge
HI STEPH BEST
12:18 That's Not Awkward. 😐
First
He must have hit his leg off the dragon how can he have hit his leg on the ground if toothless saved him unless it was a hard fall on toothless
