This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. I cannot give this movie enough praise.

I think the first movie is MILES ahead of the other 2 as well (in my opinion) Also seeing it in 3D as a kid Opening day not having any idea what the movie is about besides “cute dragon movie look cool” was an amazing experience, especially the Alpha dragon battle at the end 🤯

37:21 Not alot of people mention it but Stoic's stutter-step backwards as he immediately regretted what he said, as well as him telling Hiccup he was sorry, then proud BEFORE he took down the dragon.

I really do like that step-back Stoick does; so much is conveyed in just a few seconds of body language.
And Stoick's apology is SO good, too! Most movies with a disappointed parental figure wait until after the hero saves the day for them to come around/express their pride (even in a great movie like _Kung Fu Panda,_ where, while Ping _is_ proud as Po rushes back to save the day, he doesn't actually express it _to_ Po until after the day is saved).
But Hiccup's journey wasn't about what he had/hadn't done, it was about his spirit - to paraphrase Gobber, "It's not so much what he looks like; it's what's inside". And Stoick telling Hiccup he's proud _before_ he beats the dragon is perfect for both of their arcs in this movie.

Most reactors also hate Stoick for stopping the fight too, which I never get.

@@MattTOB618 I think the thing that sets Stoick apart from the usual disappointed dad trope is that his disappointment isnt out of ego and his desire to have his son reflect well on him, it's because of his role and responsibilities as a chief and, subsequently, Hiccup's future role as well. Despite his conflict with Hiccup, the movie shows us that Stoick is a good man with great virtues. He's courageous, selfless, reliable, protective, decisive, and a good leader. In every battle we see him at the frontlines, throwing himself into danger ahead of everyone else. His disapointment abotu Hiccup is because he worries Hiccup can't become the type of leader who can protect the village and his anger was because he felt Hiccup betrayed their village and put their people's lives at risk. So when he apologizes it feels genuine and earned, because his apology comes not because Hiccup become the heroic glorious son who could feed his ego, but because he realized that his own way of going about things was wrong and he should have been more flexible.

I also read somewhere that when stoic slams the door and it doesn't fully close it symbolizes that the door to stoic and hiccups relationship is still open and that made me love the scene even more

Fun Fact: the little, hesitant movement that Toothless does before allowing Hiccup to rest his hand on him was actually a glitch in the animation. They kept it in the movie because it really added to the scene.
Also, when they were fighting the Red Death, the giant boss dragon, they were blasting it in the wings, that's why they were getting torn up when it was falling.

    Kinda cute.....i guess....
46:45 And that's the reason why Toothless is really scary.
For some reason, many people pay attention to his cute appearance, but completely forget his description from the book of dragons. He dropped to the ground a dragon that was 15-20 times bigger and heavier than him, who also stood firmly on all four legs, with one shot. If you start to look into the details, then you realize that Toothless is a damn scary combat unit.

I swear…if Toothless could talk right there, based on his sassy dramatic head shake he’d probably thinking and/or saying something like “ huh ha…bye…bitch!” maybe a;”that’s right walk away” added for good measure 😉👌perfection, so here for sassy Toothless every damn time it makes me chuckle at that bit and the whole sequence from Hiccup bringing the fish…to the first book the snoot/pet is both the funniest and cutest thing ever ffs! They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film.

Why is Stoick an arsehole for stopping the fight? Almost every reactor feels that why and I just don't get it. You're coming from the perspective of seeing what dragons can be like, instead of these monsters that kill and steal food. Would you let your child fight a dangerous beast without armour or a weapon?

Ngl, youre the first person I've ever seen with this take. A wee sword, helmet, and shield wont do squat for a child like Hiccup against a massive dragon capable of setting itself on fire. Stoic was dumb enough to think he ever stood a chance against it, really.

@@alyssabullock6421 I mean from what Stoick has heard from everyone, he thinks he's this great Dragon hunter. And then he sees his son suddenly throw down his weapon and armour and walk towards the dragon unarmed

This one's a classic, I know they're remaking it but you can't top the real original.
