Nimona is a science fantasy graphic novel by American cartoonist ND Stevenson. • @boardtoonsguy

Honestly I think the fact that Nimona came back but was basically dead before that is a wonderful ending. Not only because now she will finally get the love she wanted and deserved all these years, but also because apart from being her own character, she's also a metaphor. In the movie it's pretty clear that she's a metaphor for being transgender/genderfluid. People fearing and not accepting her different forms, trying to put her in boxes or identify her "true" form (even though all of her forms r her true forms), that's all very similar to how our society treats trans people. But she can also be a metaphor for any struggling minority on hating which some people build their entire lives. For example, I'm cis, but I'm autistic and I felt A LOT of things while watching this movie. So the ending is both a commentary on how sometimes we accept different people too late (Nimona being gone) and the damage is irreversible, and on the fact that no matter how much hateful people will try, they will never be able to kill all people who r different from them (Nimona comes back).

Thank you for the insight! I see now how clear the movies metaphor of Nimona being transgender/gender-fluid is. But the time of watching it hadn’t registered for me somehow. Looking at it now I totally agree with you that it’s so great that she came back!!

I think that the closest answer to "What's Nimona's true form?" is "Whatever form she's in at any given moment." By that I mean shapeshifting is such an inherent part of who she is that regardless of what form she came into the world in, every shape she takes is a deliberate choice, and there's no default that she has to "return" to. (Which is a fascinating departure from most shapeshifting characters, who usually start out as a certain thing, even in science fiction where that certain thing might be a creature of pure energy or a puddle of sentient goo.)
Also, I love that Nimona specifically tells Ballister "be right back" before she launches her final assault against the Director - she's letting us know this won't be the end of her.

It's not really a secret that the movie is about being trans and/or non-binary, so the only trans/non-binary person in the world dying would be a terrible conclusion. Edit: Like "now ur freed from your misery... by being killed by the people creating your misery" is not the best. Her dying would have been an unbelievably sad, morbid ending.

Under regular film circumstances, a big sacrifice is narratively rewarding, but considering that Nimona, the character, is an avatar for trans/non-binary/gender fluidity. The creator of the graphic novels this is based on is a trans non-binary individual. It’s important that Nimona isn’t another queer coded character that dies in the end. What’s miraculous of this animated gem is that it was resurrected from Disney’s acquisition of Fox and them not cool with how “gay” it was that it was scrapped having 75% already animated. But eventually feeling tired of the constant rejection, she met a little girl, one from the many humans she’s prolly seen from afar, & immediately took a form of a girl to appear harmless to her. Her little gambit paid off as she finally felt like she belong, then with a someone instead of a pack/group/society. 🤔

I am really trying my best to your but I can't really wrap my head around the idea that you didn't notice Ambrosius and Balister were a couple until almost the end of the movie. They literally cuddle in the first scene therein, and Ambrosius outright says he loves him. It wasn't implied it was very blatant, I'm so confused

    • @starcaptain9320
      @starcaptain9320 11 місяців тому

I think the scene happened right when she was checking the voice actors, she just genuinely wasn't watching in that moment and didn't hear it at first. Though the queer allegory of this entire story felt so blatant to me that it's a bit confusing when I see it go over people's heads so completely. But I try to remember that not everybody is always looking at movies through a queer lens, and not everybody can recognize when those experiences are being referenced

@@starcaptain9320 She never once mentioned Terry being obviously trans in her Dragon Prince season 4 reaction either like when he mentions it to Viren or the trans flag flower. It's like merely mentioning trans people makes her uncomfortable which is pretty yikes. Dreading the misgendering of a certain nonbinary Bard in her Owl House season 2 reaction.

I kind of read Nimona as someone who really doesn't actually want revenge and murder. She never actually harms anyone and I think she really plays up the violence, murderousness, and unhingedness for effect. The things she actually does do are all basically petty vandalism. Really what she wants and needs most is someone who cares about her. Ballister kind of is her friend and sort of a little bit of a father figure, but mostly friend, and clearly that's what she wants the most. Someone to connect to, and she thinks at first that she can connect with him via murdering the ruling class.
She doesn't answer his questions and even mocks them when clearly they're asked from a place of annoyance or even a kind of unconscious discrimination. When he asks if she can't just be a girl, mainly because he wants her to change for other people, she mocks him and shuts him down. But when he shows he actually cares about her and his question isn't about what other people think of her, but about how she feels and he is genuinely concerned about her, and wants to get to know her better, she answers him truthfully. She still makes jokes and teases him a little, but it's clear she means it kindly.
Someone mentioned something I hadn't realised before, but he said that a hated and discriminated minority shouldn't have to do anything at all to be accepted, and he was kind of mad that it took Nimona (almost) dying and sacrificing herself for the city to accept her when they should have accepted her in the first place. It's not the job of the discriminated and hurt person to be a better person and save their tormentors in order to be accepted by those tormentors.
Also note that Nimona never once actually does anything to harm anyone. She falls into buildings when she's shot, and she swipes at a screen when it plays a commercial about slaying monsters, but that's it. She really only walks through the city. And just her existing in this world is enough for the director to want to murder her.
Oh wow, subtle message that, the director of an institute that keeps the city closed off and in perpetual fear of monsters that don't exist, wants to murder the person who is just living her life, doing nothing to harm anyone, and the director doesn't care about whoever gets caught in the crossfire. In fact, is quite happy to commit genocide on half a city of bystanders to take out an innocent person she hates for existing.

Hello, how are you? Yeah, even I found Nimona to be gloriously bold and hilariously chaotic. It was possibly one of my favorite animated movies of 2023 for several reasons and I'm pretty sure I don't have to remind you which of her lines hit me right in the mind and soul. It still stupifies me that Sony and the Walt Disney Company also refused to produce this movie with its 60-70% production process. I swear to high heaven, this kind of movie was literally in their creative ballparks. But no, "themes and great storytelling be darned, it's all brand recognition with us."
As for the pineapple pizza joke, I'm surprised you're one of several content creators that enjoy it. Honest Trailers, Blind Wave, The Normies, Tim (Reacts) mentions it's a popular combo where he lives and will take it with pepperoni, Elijah (Not-so-average Fangirl) and now you? 😮 Personally, I like it with Pepperoni (sweet and salty mix), and if I'm feeling spicy, top with some green peppers, Jalapenos or light red pepper sprinkle. I recommend it to you - that crap is STRAIGHT FIRE.🔥

Glad to see you like pineapple on pizza. Pear works, too. Salty and sweet are awesome together.
As for cars flying in this world... I mean... they _showed_ that right at the start. The very first few seconds after '1000 years later', boom... flying cars.
As for Nimona being back... she kinda _had_ to come back, or else the Director wins. The Director _did not care_ who got hurt, she just wanted to kill the monster. She was likely even willing to sacrifice her own life to achieve that goal. The Director is a fundamentalist, 100% certain in her mind that 'monster = evil', and so she likely felt she was doing the heroic thing taking the monster down no matter what the cost. Other lives, her life, it didn't matter. The _point_ was to take out the monster, no matter what, because anything _less_ than this was giving in to evil, which would eventually destroy everyone. You see this _same_ thought process among the fundamentalists _today_ who are anti-LGBT+. Some of them have even flat-out stated they want such people executed.
    Good reaction!
    Have a nice day!

And the episodes are quite short actually(half an hour), so it should be a quick watch. Yeah but i guess, your watchlist is very long already.
