The sad part is that while they were selling us highly compromised vehicles, they were behind the scenes, building, and driving the actual vehicles we wanted. SMH, so they knew how to make the right cars, but chose instead to sell us fascimiles of those vehicles that we wanted, using the actual vehicles as show cars, and play things, so they could b.s. around, while GM paid the bill? And when people buy the highly compromised cars, which GM's own employees didn't want, because obviously, this is what they, and the rest of the people, who want the same exact thing they want, purchase disappointment, before avoiding the brand altogether? I remember all those concept cars to die for, and if you ever see the original sketch for the Reatta... why it could freeze a flame, it's just that cool, and yet, what we got couldn't be considered an decent comedic parody by contrast, with garbage front heavy, wrong wheel drive dynamics to add insult to injury, yet the whole time they were playing with these expensive, worthless from a business standpoint, wastes of time, because they led to absolutely nothing helpful whatsoever? If they ever wonder why business went South, it's this. This is what brought bankruptcy, and what left that sour opinion of their brands, torpedoing brand image, pushing them down-market to the point of becoming a joke to Americans, and the rest of the world, while simultaneously elevating brands like BMW, Mercedes Benz, and the like to the elite status, as well as to forefront of the collective car buying masses desires, aka, their fantasy wish list, becoming the first place they wanted to turn as soon as they actually had enough money to spend to get the car they ACTUALLY wanted. This is what kills you GM. This is why people laugh at your crap products. This is why to by an American car is to settle because what you really wanted was just a little too pricey, and why those same buyers stare outside their widows at the turd they settled for, with a lump in their throat large enough to cause vomiting, wishing they didn't have to buy mediocrity, and working hard to get something Japanese, or European, so they can feel better when stand up comics make careers off of writing jokes based on your brands " yuck, wtf, that sucks" status. This. (Do you buy a BMW, a Benz, a Lexus, a TownCar, or grandma's Caddy? I rest my case.)
Of course they would take a potentially great fun car and then down tune it and stick it with fwd. How fun would this car be with 250-300hp, rwd, and a 5 speed manual? That's the 90s for ya
Reatta would have been a cool sportster if it had been a twin-T FR-3.8. Smaller turbos 1 for each 3 cyl. to reduce lag issues. It could have produced a cool 380 hp + all that wonderfull 3.8 torque, it might have been Americas AE-86
God damn, I hate that the GM 10 (W platform) cars were front wheel drive. They should have been based on the European GM V platform and made beauties like these. Now the 3800 would have shined in a light car like that. A Chevy 305 would be a performer on in. A Quad 4, or an Iron Duke would be good base engines that wouldn't be too overwhelmed by the vehicle weight. It makes you think, what if?
I once read that there were 2 RWD prototypes. One was a low boost high compression engine and the other was a highboost. A reporter totaled the highboost model.
You could change a hundred things to make the reatta a perfect car like any car but realistically if the reatta was simply rwd with the 3800 engine still then a allante v8 optional, the car would have been way more successful. I wish they never gave up on the touchscreen and original digital dash and improved them instead and over time added better engine options and other options. They could have produced the car until 1998 or so with a couple refreshes and paved the way to cheap advanced technology like the crt way earlier then we got

Not that deep
That regal coupe supercharged RWD would have been revolutionary...
Reatta Heaven.... I like that wagon too. Prototypes footage is never long enough.

Sure would be fun but that 0-60 is shameful. My 1.6L toyota has a 0-60 at 8 seconds and it has 1/3 the hp.

this makes me want to change the drivetrain and turbocharge my reatta

How cool would it be to own one or both of these cars today
damn...I saw this when it first aired!

wow. if only
i want the conversion bits what fools to never produce this this would have shut m5 ppl up for good
Anyone brave enough to stuff a c4 rear end into a reatta or Allanté? This is how gm built this reatta
A RWD Allanté would've been a gnarly and tubular improvement compared to the FWD drivetrain it came with from the factory!
Maybe if the released it this way I would have got more than $1800 for mine.
Is this car still alive or was it dismantled?
i found one of these cars for $1200 but its stock..........i didnt buy it cause im trying to get rid of my 87 Buick Regal Turbo
