The one fact Matt left out of this video is that during the last laps of the race, Olivier Panis's race engineer yelled at him to pit because the calculations showed the amount of fuel he was carrying wasn't enough for him to reach the end of the race.
They kept battling on the radio because the race was about to end and David Coulthard was right behind so pitting Panis would make him lose P1.
Eager to win his first (and only) Grand Prix, Panis screamed back at his team on the radio:
"If I pit now, we'll look like idiots throwing away a win.
If I stay out and the car run out of fuel, so be it. I take responsibility for this.
If it don't, you get a win. I'm not pitting"
His engineer agreed and started to give him instructions to make the fuel last 'till the end.
Due to the two-hour time limit, the race ended on Lap 75. If it had gone to full distance (78 laps), Panis would have retired for fuel exhaustion because the car wouldn't start again after he turned it off in front of the podium.

Ligier winning a race wasn't THAT unheard of. They actually won quite a few races during the first turbo era of the late 70s-early 80s, and were championship runners-up in 1980, but by 1996 they hadn't won a race in 15 years. That was also their last season in F1 before they went bankrupt, got bought out, and became Prost.

One of the other crazy things is that they just left some cars out on the track. I mean, we're used to cranes just operating while the race is still going back in the day, but seeing Badoer's car just stand there at the tunnel entrance for the last 8 laps or so is quite the sight to behold, though at least they was a yellow flag waved. The yellow flags right after the hairpin while stewards were salvaging Salo's car on the track is also noteworthy. It's a bit of a miracle that no one got seriously injured that day, but thankfully that makes it a great race to rewatch every once in a while since nothing bad happened. (Edit: If you're watching the race on F1TV, 2:02:40 is the Irvine/Salo/Hakkinen crash)

The longest Formula 1 race in history (over 4 hours), the most stops by the winning driver (six), the most safety car deployments (also six), the highest number of overtakes by the winning driver (Button went from the back of the field to first *twice*). Martin Whitmarsh called it the best win in F1 history. It also wouldn't happen today, because they'd stop the race after 2 hours.

Mortermini? And winning in a Ligier was not unheard of. Yes they were midfield in 1996, but this was the teams 9th win in F1. And McLaren were hardly at their best at this point, but they were pretty much on a par with Ferrari and Benetton at this point. If you look at the stats that year, while Williams were in a class of their own, Benetton, McLaren and Ferrari were regular points finishers and had quite a few podiums too. The gap between those three teams really was not that much, but the gap from McLaren to the likes of Jordan, Sauber & Ligier was huge.
While Ferrari had wins because, well Schumacher, those three teams were fairly equal on pace and fairly equal on unreliability.

I burst into laughter after hearing that ridiculous Jean Alesi bad luck story. I mean really, Ferrari 1-2 at Monza? Nope. Literally a camera taking out the teammate. How are these curses with certain drivers even a thing it’s so crazy

I can think of a certain event at sakihir back when poor lewis got covid but ALSO denied george russel his maiden win,I Noticed something that at sakhir that leclerc and verstappen crashed into the race winnersergio perez} on lap 1 going out.I think the monaco leclerc curse will never be over and verstappen is long due a DNF so these two could come together THIS weekend just a theroy tho!

Schumacher wasn't immune to occasional strange crashes, (granted, no champion is no matter what people who bleat on about 'x wouldn't have made that error' or 'x isn't a real champion' arguments insist) but Monaco 96 had to be one of his most egregious ones, especially as that Ferrari was very handy in the wet (thanks in equal part to Michael being extremely gifted and some partial traction control) and had dominated in Spain in similar conditions. It felt like after he scuffed the start he was a bit over eager to try and get back on the tail of the Williams.

Another fact for Jean Alesi, he turned down the Williams contract for Ferrari, and Williams went wild in 1992 then Alesi and his Ferrari keeps struggling.

A crazier race, huh? What about Abu Dhabi 2021, maybe it didn't have as many retirements, but the what it caused to the whole sport is still crazy.

When Olivier woke up that morning, he turned to his girlfriend and said that he had that special feeling that day. He said “ I think I might win today “. His car Had been running very well throughout the weekend, but nonetheless that wasn’t nearly enough to convince his woman that her man Actually had a chance lol. Heard this in an interview.

I have a race but I wouldn’t say it’s crazier, but it was the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix where it was so wet that they didn’t do the whole race, and I think a few drivers retired as well.

IMO I think that this Monaco GP is going to be almost, if not more crazy than this one. The chance of rain is high and with Latifi on the grid, and these heavier, longer, and harder to control cars there’s a greater chance of crashes at Monaco than ever before.
