  • We read or hear all the time about hypothetical diesel truck builds. 10K or 20K and the truck is magically a performance truck. The real question is, what truck are you actually buying? Is it a ticking time bomb? How much of your money goes to repairs and holds back performance upgrades? How can you quickly and easily tell if the truck for sale is junk? This will episode will tell you.

    This video would be better with someone on a computer putting images of these particular trucks and parts or issues. It would be greater education from a dummies perspective. Haha

    No matter which engine you have!!! Gas or Diesel!!!! People, let your engine warm up before you raise hell with it!!!!
    Then let it cool down at idle before you shut it down!!!!!! or don't and cause premature wear!!!

    First of all. I love this podcast. I don’t listen to other podcasts so thanks. I sold my ‘97 and regretted it ever since. I’m going back to a Cummins diesel for a truck camper. The thing that is great about this episode is that most info is failures related to putting more power on the truck. For those of us that want a reliable stock truck, this is really helpful. I can buy a 5th gen but may go 4th gen. Thank YOU!

    I am and have learned so much watching/listening to these episodes. I wanna get a diesel so bad now. I don't need one and it'd be more practical to get a 1 ton gasser for what I'd use it for, but there's just something about a diesel. I gotta build up my fold 💵 first in order to afford one, but I've been looking and there's some pretty decent 6.0, 7.3, and 6.7 powerstrokes, and ram cummins 3500s out there for 10k-15k. A lot of them that have already had all the gremlins fixed on them and upgrades done already.

    I hear so many different opinions on diesel ownership. I have a 2018 2500hd with gas motor & it’s time to start looking for my next truck. I’m a landscaper & I pull a 7 x 14 dump trailer & a 16ft utility trailer. I want a new L5P for my next truck. What kind of problems can I see my that truck? I’m in Ohio so I push snow also. My current truck is a good truck, it just doesn’t have much power.

    Run from the new 4 cylinder Durmax that are in the Canyon and Colorado's. I had a 2018 ZR2 with a Durmax. Love how the truck handles and its off road ability. However, it was in the shop over 12 times with less than 28K miles. Always throwing codes. GM replaced everything short of the motor. They spent over $5k keeping me in rental vehicles. Gm has had the same issue with the model. GM finally purchased the truck back from me. Sad to say but but I'm going to hang up my Chevy hat. Time for a RAM.

    • @TheDieselPodcast
      @TheDieselPodcast  3 роки тому

      Mark Leukus Hi Mark! Sure thing, the engine codes will refer to the year range:
      2001-04 LB7
      2004.5-05 LLY
      2006-07 LBZ
      2008-10 LMM
      2011-16 LML
      2017 - current L5P
      For a general overview, each year range and engine code made changes for various emission requirements. Fuel system parts, turbo, electronics and transmission can change from each year range. This is very general, as some components didn’t change much like suspension or driveline parts. If you have specific questions, let us know and we will get a Duramax expert on an episode!

  • @Engine_biulds
    @Engine_biulds Рік тому +2

    The problem with this guy is he is not looking at the full picture for the 03-07 cummins...
    The cost of maintenance alone on a 08+ 6.7 cummins and the reliability issues with them is HUGE then, if you delete a 4th gen your driving it illegally and in states where you need a inspection your screwed. Anything with emissions for a diesel I say get a smaller engine gas burner and turbo it and enjoy better efficiency being lighter and more power.
    The 4th gen 68rfe is a beautiful transmission but it's not the 68rfe and it's caviots. It's all the 6.7 emissions passed 06-07.
    The greatest part about a late 5.9, even the earlier 03-05 these are the most simplistic design across all platforms and the most owner friendly to biuld. I am 34years old and after 6 months of learning about the 48re and it's RE family, I biult a friend his first REAL transmission with every single weak area addressed and or updated within the valve body... the case mods billet parts alto red eagle clutches with a factory clutch or two added nearest the piston apply to help forther tailor the feel of the shifts. and so far I've biult 4 transmissions with my first one for my friend and he has already 320k on it and with the 3/16 extra wide front band is holding up very well, i did adjust it for him but I can tell you based on what I see with all the work done so far I think I built him a solid 500k + transmission. 5forward clutches 8 directs and added clutches in the over drives... yes you've read that correct 5 clutches OVER the original 4 in forward drum and 8 clutches OVER the original 5 in the direct ( 47re have 3-FWD and 4-DIRCT mine is 5-FWD and 8-DIRCT let that sink in also with the added pressure we have easily increased the capacity 400-500% I'd have to do the math also clearances are slightly tighter to help the seals last longer and move less) the goal is efficiency and longevity aswell as. Durability.
    A few parts: Billet extensded hub sonnax input shaft for the first three and for mine in doing billet throughout aswell as a larger output and tcase spool. As it is the only 4x4 one I'v biult and I want it to hold up to allot of abuse should it get to over 750hp
    Also the converters I used was all DPC 400 understall triple disk converters with exception to my 4x4 having a 1400stall for max possible efficiencies in the city and highway as ill be living on the road. Also doing a solid hub in the front and locking hubs aswell as a new billet Tru-track LSD I also am biulding the motor with a 6.7 crank for the added compression and displacement at 6.09liter. The goal is highest possible torque at the 700hp range down low to support the lower stall converter.
    Ported to the absolute max head by myself stock valve size upgraded and modified with a large anti reversion lip. Ported banks intercooler Ported banks air horn 67/67 custom billet turbo banks super scoop and intake system 188/220 cam billet bridges upgraded oush rods and conical springs and Also will be running a billet Trans pump gear set the Trans also has rollerized planets and just a massive full biuld list. Yes I'm spending over 20k to biuld it but this is the way you biuld a purpose biult rig. M
    My goal is 30mpg and atleast 500k before I need to touch it again (outside of maintenance)and I'm not claiming it's possible BUT if it is ill have a good chance of getting there. With this setup

    • @ppump24valve53

      Thomas Carrillo we do not only work on diesels. This is only 50% of our work. There are 2 duramax only shops within 15 miles of our shop and they have seen it too. The cranks have 1” holes bored right in the connecting rod journals for weight reduction, and they snap off. Even on stock engines they break. 1 lb7 had 270k miles- stock. Other lbz had 150k, just did an 80 horse tune n egr delete, within 2 weeks it was back with broken crank. Another local shop had 1 as low as 50k miles- stock. We have also done a dozen head gaskets on stock duramaxes - 2 which were less than 100 k miles. We have done 1- 6.0 trans in last 3 years in f 550 dump truck. The only thing that failed was a reverse hub. ( not very common) everything else was fine. And this contractor has 3- 6.0s, and runs them hard. 1-6.4. / We have done 4 Allison’s, 6 Dodge automatics. 70% of Our customers drive duramaxes, so we have plenty of work.

      12 valve for sure but the 24 valves aren't bad either. But the 24s have more issues

    • @BrodieBr0
      @BrodieBr0 5 років тому +5

      I have 2 5.9's that are 12 valve 1st gens and one 24 valve. They are both great engines but I prefer the 12 valves because maintenance is easy and the trucks are so simple. The dodge truck around the engine has needed repairs or course, the engine keeps on chugging 400K on one and 300k on another. Original V-pumps still going but I am going to rebuild them soon for preventative maintenance. I've had to replace the injector pump on the 24v at about 150,000. The 12v starts faster than any engine I've owned. Even in -20 temps if you have a good battery and cold diesel additives in the fuel. below 10 degrees I recommend using the block heater if the truck has one just to save wear and tear of the engine having to warm on its own. I do recommend a manual trans if possible, they hold up better behind the Cummins especially if want to tune the engines up. These guys have great tips to look for in this video. Best of luck to you if you decide to get one! :)

Whether it's the 6.4 engine, 47/48RE's failing (or heat exchanger issues), EGR and DPF failures (any of the newer trucks), 6.0L oil coolers, LB7 injectors, LLY heads, 53 blocks, etc. I wouldn't shy away from a 7.3L or 6.7L Powerstroke, nor would I from a well-maintained 6.0L. Same goes for any Duramax or Cummins. They can all be a great truck, or a lemon.
