    I was a GM mechanic in the late 70"s and from the introduction of 5.7 diesel thru the 6.2, 6.5 and into the Dmax GM never could get the fuel system right for utmost reliability they always cheaped out and did the minimum for cost cutting not what was best for the consumer. An aftermarket fuel filter lift pump system with regular maintenance is the best way to ensure a long and healthy life from your GM diesel.

    I have an 02 ram 3500 and have had a lot of pump problems. Computer board shorted out and advanced the timing a bunch at 60mph. That collapsed a piston skirt. Was in a hurry, so I put another engine and it's bone stock except for 4 inch exhaust. I am addicted to old farm tractors and I pull a gooseneck with this truck. I load a 16000 to 17000 pound tractor in Central Iowa and bring it to eastcentral Illinois. I get out on the interstate, set the cruise at 72 and run 400 mile home and that Cummins never misses a beat! My son inlaw had an 02 chevy and had nothing but trouble with injectors and head gaskets! He now has an 06 ram!

    Bought a 2003 lb7 new. Injectors went out and were replaced at 60k miles. All injectors were replaced, fass lift pump installed, fuel filters were changed regularly and diesel additive was used. My new injectors lasted almost the exact same amount of time as the originals did. Right around another 60k miles. Needless to say it got fixed again, sold and I won’t own another. My neighbor had a 2002 lb7 and had a similar story. I also had both wheel bearings go out and a knock in the steering I couldn’t seem to get rid of. Either way lb7 life wasn’t for me. I have a few friends with lbz or Lmm trucks that have 200k plus miles with the original injectors. I’m not a diesel expert or anything just a guy that likes trucks and has owned a few. Any one that continually says "I'll be perfectly honest with you" leads me to believe that they might not be otherwise honest? I'm sure the man is honest but prefacing a statement saying I'll be honest is a bit concerning.
    As far a the L5P's breaking crankshafts other than his experience with One Ambulance Fleet's engines, I can find nothing about this issue with the L5P searching Goggle. I would certainly be interested in this issue in more details. I had heard the 6.7 Powerstrokes have broken crankshaft issues which do show up when Googled.
    The CP4.2 on the 6.7 Ford and the fact that it cannot be retrofitted to a CP3 is the single reason I went with a L5P vs the 6.7 Powerstroke. When RAM decided to switch to the CP4.2 in 2019 and 2020 then wound up recalling those trucks because of failed pumps was the nail in the coffin for me ever owning a CP4 equipped diesel. I am not willing to risk having one fail even if the odds are low.

    May be wrong but I feel like if you're doing a transmission build on a 5 speed Allison it makes sense to spend a little more and do the 6 speed valve body/ TCM tune upgrade especially for highway speeds or with larger tires and trying to keep RPM's lower at 65mph and up. Duramax tuner is the way to go for that, Nick and the team are super knowledgeable.
    I am curious to know if anyone knows just how worth while a Fluid damper is for the Duramax and helping counter some of the firing order stresses?

      Great points, I should have mentioned those. The 6 speed conversion is totally worth doing, it isn't cheap but if the customer is planning on keeping the vehicle, it's an excellent upgrade while you're in there.

      @@ryllyduc1198 I've ran fluidampers on many engines including my personal engines. I am careful when recommending them, it's a great product, and they do work. We had one on our shop built LB7 sled pulling truck, and we still managed to snap the crankshaft. That was a high horse power application, and we were running an alternate firing camshaft. We took every precaution to avoid a snapped crankshaft, and we still snapped it.

    I've broken my back twice, although I feel lucky that it doesn't affect me as much as those with nerve issues, I feel your pain on the truck ride. I drive an Excursion that I've swapped in 2011 F250 rear leaf's, and new v-codes maybe from Junior at ATS. I plan on 05 up coil swap with some good shocks, although I'd like to hear your opinion on what works if you have one.
    If you don't think 6-speeds work well, how do you feel about an Allison 6-speed going in my 7.3 Excursion? Aftermarket clutches and a good converter. 500+ wheel. You praised the 6R140 in the PS episode, but I can't adapt and control one behind my 7.3...

    • @vinnyhimes1190
      @vinnyhimes1190 Рік тому

      We've done several Allison conversions here at the shop. I have nothing good to say about them yet. Tuning the trans after the conversion seems to be impossible, we've flown tuning guys out here and driven around for hours while they try to get the allison conversion to act right in a daily driven application. We'll get it 100% dialed in, give the vehicle back to the customer. They drive it for a couple weeks and the allison will go right back to it's bad habits.
      Having also broken my back, I wouldn't want to recommend this as an option for you. They shift so violently it feels like getting rear ended. Until someone can prove to me this can be resolved, I'm not recommending Allison conversions anymore. Will the transmission hold up, absolutely, will you enjoy it... most likely not.

    • @Jim_Lawrence
      @Jim_Lawrence Рік тому

      @@vinnyhimes1190 What controller(s) have you used for the Allison Conversions? My plan was from Destroked that supplies a harness and an Allison Controller. From what I understand anyone that tunes Duramax trucks could tune it then. My thought was if it can be made right for a GM, then using this set-up should be no different. It's really tight lipped though on actual experience. This avenue does keep tap shift.
      I've also had experience with adaptive learning on a 6.0 5R110 screwing everything up. I could load a tune, it would be perfect for between 100 and 1000 miles. Then it would do stupid stuff. The tuner absolutely refused to turn off adaptive learning also. I wasn't a fan of that setup, engine or trans.

CA Conversions wasn't interested in helping us with the kits we had installed, but we did end up ordering a CA Conversions complete Allison Conversion and we are installing it now on a 2008 F450, I will definitely let you know if this works out better than the other kits we've installed.

      One guy with a CA Conversions setup on his Excursion actually commented in a forum that he was really happy with them. I believe he was still 7.3. Hope it works out. I'm assuming that F450 is a Cummins swap also?
      If there was an economical way for me to swap a 6.7 6R140 in the Ex, I might do it. I already have everything for a 550 hp 7.3 though. The Allison is mainly to gain better overdrive. The deeper first and better spacing is just a bonus. Either way I need a trans to hold once I drop the injectors in...

    I’d assume the Lml head gasket issue is from the aluminum heads and cast bottom end. They heat and cool at different ratios. So running the ambulances super hard then shutting em off and then repeating that several hundred times you’re definitely gonna have a head gasket issue…. I agreee with the cp4 talk though. If you got a FASS and run some additives there isn’t a need to cp3 swap. Unless you’re just beating the crap out of it and want peace of mind.

Have we seen it, yes, is your personal daily driven' vehicle going to snap a crankshaft, unlikely. Since this episode was recorded, we do currently, right now, as I type... have two daily driven customer's L5P's in here with cracked pistons. I believe bad tuning was the cause on both. Since most of the good reputable tuning companies have been fined and driven out of business by the EPA and their government bullying. There's a lot of shady tuning being sold out there, definitely beware of bad tuning. Research the tuning company and make sure they know what they are doing.

And that’s from tons of personal money spent. But still not as bad as Chrysler products. Even MORE money and personal experience. That’s NOT saying cumins sucks. Far from it. Their interiors are EXTREMELY comfy. But the package it’s wrapped in (dodge) is utter shit. I’ve never owned a Cummins. But I have owned several dodge’s. And their product SUCKS. Ford is hit or miss. Which this man covers rather succinctly. I haven’t owned a powerstroke but I have owned gassers from ford. And the triton was utter shit. Now have a 6.2 gasser. Not an issue… yet.
