Personally, I LIKE the changes...it streamlines the category selection process and keeps the playing field level for all publishers. QUESTION: What happens to books already published in 10 categories? Do they get to keep them? or will 7 of them be dropped?
I love that it's easier to chose more relevant categories.
Hi Rachel, the problem is, is that it is a maximum of 3 categories limited to a single marketplace. This means if you are in the UK and select your three categories, it is for that marketplace only. You have no control over the other countries and which category is chosen for a different marketplace such as the US. Dave Chesson from Publisher Rocket knows about this too and emailed me the following in response just a few weeks ago "Correct. So, currently Amazon does not have a way to remedy this. We're still waiting to see how they will finish rolling out the new changes, including region or marketplace specific categories. Cheers, Dave Chesson"
So it appears as if Amazon have failed to take this into consideration prior to rolling it out
LOL, they were listening when you said that those extra categories (combined with keyword research) were the secret behind getting profits with no ads! Yes, your content is so good that sticks to my mind😊

I like the new categories, it is a much better classification for my cookbooks. My question is, will it consider all our past sales when ranking us in the new categories or do we have to start from scratch.
I wonder to what extent, if any, these changes are reflective of an increased dependence upon keywords, SEO, etc. More and more platforms seem intent on leveraging keywords, images and context to index results and show them to consumers. Instagram's shift away from hashtags and toward keywords/SEO and image/video scanning comes to mind. As ever, a relevant, straightforward and helpful video.
As a romance author I don't like the new system. Admitting your book has a love scene will get it thrown in the erotica dungeon severely limiting your advertising options.

I would only do that on books that were performing well in the past but aren't performing well anymore. I wouldn't want to make changes to any books that are performing well currently. You could also choose a small handful of books that never performed well to see if updating the categories helps. If any of those start generating sales, I would choose another handful to update. Testing in small batches like this will ensure you don't waste a ton of time updating a slew of books if it ends up making no difference. :)

I updated my book. Not sure if it will make a difference or not as far as sales, but it was easy enough to do. I am always wary of things though when they say "This cannot be reversed" because I honestly don't understand why you couldn't recategorize something with the click of a button.

I agree; I think this is a win all around. So far it looks like books that have already been placed into more than 3 categories are keeping their categories, but this might change over time.

so i tried the new category system and I couldn’t find the options for journals or notebooks, what category would i select for those? Will that be in your updated course? i purchased your course a while ago, will the updated content be in the course that i bought a while ago or will it only be in the current one?
There aren't any categories specifically for journals or notebooks. Choose categories that most closely relate to your book type. For example, if your journal is cat-themed you could find a cat-related category.
And yes, I'll be updating the course to reflect these changes and you'll have access to them. :)
