U2 are one of very few bands to have various peaks. Theve had 3 in my opinion. The Joshua tree being the first when they became the biggest band in the world. Then in the 90’s the sound of 4 guys chopping down the Joshua tree Achtung Baby. What an album that is, one of the biggest reinventions in mainstream music. The Zoo Tv that followed was pioneering in stadium rock and arguably the greatest tour of all time. Then their 3rd peak was in the 2000’s with all that you can’t leave behind. Beautiful day was on this which is arguably there most popular song. They were huge during this period , Super Bowl post 9/11 elevation tour . Again they reinvented themselves to a new generation. Can’t think of many bands that have done this

I disagree. The first big peak was their breakthrough album "War" with the songs "New Years Day", "Two Hearts Beat as One" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" which got radio airplay in the US and videos regularly played on MTV. That's also around the time when they played at "Live Aid" and became international stars.
The second peak, The Joshua Tree was the first time they had number one hits, but that (with the concert movie "Rattle and Hum") was more of a culmination than an arrival.
After that, Achtung Baby and Zooropa (which were pretty much parts 1 and 2 of a piece), were the albums that transformed them into a glossy pop band. With this change, (even though they had the occasional hit songs) their popularity began to wane as each album got further and further away from the band people originally felt connected to.

You are right about "Where the Streets Have No Name," for the most part. It's about how in Belfast you can tell someone's social status by the name of the street they live on.

If I have any complaint at all with The Joshua Tree it's that I can rarely get through it. I mean, just look how frontloaded it is. It opens with Streets for gosh sakes; probably the greatest live concert finale/encore song ever - and they *start* with it here ! I'm winded by the time I get to Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for, burned by the smoldering heat of With or Without You and am usually on my hands and knees after getting bombarded by Bullet the Blue Sky. Running to Stand Still is usually where I collapse and tap out. Magnificent record, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@@YourLoyalDeserter There are no bad songs on TJT. We have to agree to disagree. I'm almost 50 years old and have been listening to TJT since 1987 and those have always been favorites of mine. As much as I love the vocals and guitar on With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, those are 2 of the weakest lyrics on the album.
However, I love the whole album, but I'd say I like side two slightly more than side one.
You and I probably just have very different tastes in music. I'm one of those who hates most of the stuff U2 has done in the new millennium. I hate every song on All That You Can't Leave Behind, Only like one on Atomic Bomb, none on Horizon, one or sort of two on Innocence, none on Experience.
I think Boy and October are mediocre. I think War and The Unforgettable Fire and masterpieces like The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. I think Zooropa and Pop are hit and miss. Zooropa is over-rated and Pop is under-rated but Passengers is as good or better than either. Also Rattle and Hum is under-rated.
I'm not a fan of the Jesus stuff which is a huge part of U2, but lots of people who don't worship Halle Sallesie listen to Bob Marley and his music is twice as full of Rastafarian religion as U2's is full of Christianity.

    • @YourLoyalDeserter
      @YourLoyalDeserter 3 роки тому +1

@@abelashes2676 I'll agree that there are no bad songs, but With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found have some of the strongest lyrics on the album, stronger than Streets, stronger than Red Hill Mining Town. U2's 2000s stuff is a lot worse than their previous material overall. ATYCLB is a good pop rock record, but there's not really anything on there that's among my favorite U2 songs. Bomb is imo their worst album but does have a couple good highlights. No Line is mostly bad but has flashes of absolute brilliance, Moment of Surrender, FEZ. SOI is decent, and I like a few songs on SOE, Little Things, Red Flag Day, 13, Summer of Love. I do love Zooropa and Pop as well.

Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is my favorite gospel song.
There are certain moments that we all have, some of us more than others, that are just VIVID, man. Most memories are somewhat vague and hazy... but some moments are just CRYSTAL CLEAR. Coming back to my apartment to listen to the new U2 album... dropping the needle on THE VINYL!! (Yes, vinyl)
AND THAT INTRO! INTO STREETS!! Which we hadn't heard yet!!
And then... all of (waves arms around) *this* happened.
I knew I was listening to a masterpiece!

Favorite song on the JT album is In Gods Country. Where the Street have no name is a reference to North side of Dublin where ones street determined their religious affiliation. This was often the start of many conflicts. The idea of going to that other place, the place where the streets have no name-possibly a reference of heaven. The JT album has been the biggest influence on the new Christian rock music over the last 25 years.

Perhaps the greatest 1, 2, 3 punch to start off any album: Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, and With or Without You. It doesn’t get any better than that.
The instrumental that closes the latter of those tracks is probably my favourite song outro of all time. The Edge’s chords are gorgeous and sublime. The emotion and vivid landscapes that he can convey with such a simple, pared back approach is a testament to his brilliance as a composer and guitarist. He’s easily in my top 5, and one of the most underrated out there. I’d prefer to listen to him any day over a virtuoso who has no feeling in their playing. That ending of With or Without You just punches you in the soul. How could one not be deeply moved by it?
As for I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For: it seems to be about man’s quest for fulfillment, and the God-shaped hole in every human heart. We search for and yearn for God, but we tend to look for Him in all the wrong places. To paraphrase Saint Augustine, ‘our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him.’ The band, Extreme, has a song that touches on a similar note: Hole Hearted

Great video, my favorite U2 song is Until The End Of The World off 1992’s Achtung Baby. Most of U2’s lyrics are rooted in Gospel, so if you’re ever wondering what Bono is singing about, start with the Bible. You’ll be right more often than not.

Very interested in your interpretations of the songs especially Where the Streets have no name and I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. My favorite album and songs come from Achtung Baby (considered their 2nd masterpiece). I would definitely watch your reaction to that! It’s darker and more 90s sounding.

His faithfulness versus our unfaithfulness Not here to evangelize, but Bono always sprinkles Biblical imagery through out most of his lyrics. As you can hear in “Streets” and “Still”. Definitely in my all time top 5 or so albums along with Innervisions, Electric Ladyland, a couple Led Zeppelin albums, and There’s A Riot Goin’ On and a few others... but Joshua Tree is probably my favorite. All of U2’s first 8 albums are excellent. Boy, October, War, Unforgettable Fire, JT, Rattle and Hum (a live album w/ various studio cuts), Achtung Baby, and Zooropa. Kinda lost interest after Zooropa (1993). You could really get lost in a rabbit hole with their deep cuts and live material. Even post 1993 albums have lots of great stuff...
