- Welcome back to my Breath of Fire Binge, where I’m playing through the entire series and creating loads of BOF videos.
Breath of Fire 2 was released a few years after the first on the Super Nintendo and later ported to the GBA, with a few minor adjustments.
I had quite a few issues with the first BOF title, as I made quite clear in my review, but as expected, Capcom learnt from their mistakes and BOF2 does address most of the problems that plagued the original.

I played this game when I was 13 and had no book. It aged me like 5 years due to the stress and frustration.
Once I had a book it was much more fun.
Lol I’ve mistakenly asked myself “how did gamers beat these games before the internet?”, only to remember that certain games such as this had a guidebook of some sort.
(Off topic, but many games, and even platforms games such as the DK Country series, SM64, etc. had a players guide you could buy if you wanted to 100 % the game).
Rand's ability has a hidden feature that even the guide books didn't know. Use it on a character that is unconscious... As in 0 HP left. Sometimes Rand can knock them back to life, though the previously unconscious character only comes back with 1 HP and should be healed ASAP.

Best thing I found about BoF2 is when at the HighFort, my Gameboy always crash when the fortress explodes, if I don't have Sten that is. The only time I ever go pass that tower fall cutscene is if I have Sten at the front lol
I really love the first part of this game. It’s just a quest to save your friend. There’s something small and simple about it that’s endearing. But it also drops hints at something larger going on which becomes the save the world quest later. If felt it really helps you know the characters despite the simplicity of it all.
I probably spent like $50 hiring this game from Video 2000 for weeks on end and binge playing it all weekend. This game is what got me started on JRPGs. I wish I just bought the damn thang, so I still had it today.
The first half of the game seems like a series of odd jobs, but you’re still trying to reach one goal: find the woman who looks like a bat.
Along the way, you get hints that something is wrong in the world and that the dominant religion might be hiding something.
After you play the game a few times, you pick up more of the subtle hints in the first part of the game.
One of my favorites on the SNES.
I like the dragon system on bof 2. No dragon spam just use it wisely
I enjoyed most of it well enough. I wish the characters I didn’t use as frequently stayed near the level of the main party, as I found myself stuck for hours sometimes having to grind with them in order to complete their story arcs.
And I wish I was able to switch my party members without having to use the dragon statues. Nothing breaks up the flow more than being halfway through a dungeon, only to realize I don’t have the right character to complete it and then having to go all the way back to add them to the party
I like the characters, the story and music. But the things mentioned above left me extremely irritated a lot of the time.
"Wake" can also be used to revive dead characters. The reason it does that is because when you get him you are automatcally in a fight with a boss that crits a lot and at that point unless you fished and hunted with Bow before he leaves you won't have enough money for the good equipment and 100HP healing items "HelpBL" and LifePls for reviving.
The reason for the encounter rate being so high is because in the last game EVERYONE got exp in this one only the characters with you gain it, but the exp gets a large boost the more levels Ryu has in comparison to the character.
I also commented on the last video about the encounter rate being still bad, but the "HolySF" accessory reduces it however the chest one is found so late, but the Maniro that sells it can be found as soon as you get the Whale near a beach and house south of Township.
You also forgot to mention Ryu's "Smoke" spell which reduces it as well, but his powers damage is based off of how full his AP is so it's not recommended. Also as for his powers being bad; Ryu in BoF1 was a full blooded light dragon. BoF2 Ryu is half human and half light dragon. This is also proven by how Ray (sorry for spoilers) fights the whole fight as a dragon and Ryu can only use one as Ray is from Ryu's mother's home.
For the future BoF3 added an increase encounter rate accessory, but it seems to have no effect and so did the one thats supposed to reduce it. At least to me it did as I always took the same steps for a fight, however I always ran which doubles the chance each step.

RPG Tall Tales Yeah. I disliked the Ryu's dragons. That there 1 shot & AP dependant. So a bit counter intuative & to what you said the problem of it. The 2 useless accessories that are supposed to be good. Not. Is sad. I got it for Switch. Most likely not fixed. I still think however Nina in 2 is best looking & Gleen's,Katt's & Bow's holy/dark/earth is cool. I never got the big looking elemental guardian. Saw it once by someone who did.😮
Honestly I prefer the way BoF1 handled the dragons and experience.
The dragons in BoF1 were much better as, well the video already says why
But the experience points for BoF1 was so much better, since I didn’t have to constantly swap members just to grind.
Overall, BoF1 is my favorite just for that
The way I've dealt with the encounter rate back in the day was to level like crazy. Basically, you have to get the chef to move to your town, he'll give you the Chop Chop spell you teach Ryu and then swim to the super monster island. The giant fly get be beaten with Chop Chop in one strike.

As of now, this game and Earthbound are the only RPGs on the SNES Online for the Switch. I’m about to start playing this.
Loved BoF 2. I played it on the GBA and SNES and the remake on the GBA was so much better and a breath of fresh air. BoF 2 really got me into the Series (while BoF 1 still was a really good JRPG).
Seili On Switch. I wonder how many know of a rare accessory you can get before finding Suzie. Just got and cool. Blocks a aliment.
But the music and colours on the GBA tough.

Boots is the answer but seeing as they stuffed the translation it's shoes I love this game
Even though this game is grindy. I love it anyways. To be fair I love grinding so that's probably why. Shoes
Another stellar review as always my friend. I have briefly played breath of fire II but i didn't get very far in it but I am anxious to give this game another try. Good luck with the third entry in the breath of fire series because it is one that I have recently completed and retired my self.
Thanks mate. I would recommend playing with an emulator to make the random encounters less painful (speed up button). I've just started the third. Review should be out in a few weeks..

I would like to request that you make the Breath of Fire 3 video twice as long as this one, BoF3 is my favorite and I like hearing people talk about it. Im sorry I dont have any donation money but im a fan of the channel and always watch your uploads.

I honestly got fed up after I found out that I couldn't leave the High Fort until I beat that part of the game. That, combined with everything else wrong that you mentioned in this game plus the sparseness of locations for purchasing recovery items (especially the mana items which deal damage to whichever character uses them as if their rarity wasn't bad enough) just made the game overall more frustrating than fun for me. I definitely prefer the first BoF game.

3 is such a huge improvement to the series and the best one by far IMO, can't wait for your review on it.

Agree. Then first,second and quarter last. Wished they bring back 3rds dragons,seconds elemental shamans and tools. Be decent or good tools for your characters.
3 is actually the worst in my opinion, especially with the linear path model, 1,2 and 4 are much better
Couldn't get into 1, 3 or 4 like I did BoF 2 so I would have to disagree. Then again, PS1 era wasn't my cup of tea for the genre, besides for FF9 and Chrono Cross
3 is great, but its heavily ruined by the annoying mini-games and puzzles
You sorta had to use the guide so that you don't miss the shamans. Holy and wind on Nina gives her an ability to make normal enemies run away from the battle. Also monster island with the giant monsters and the gold slime gives you outrageous amounts of xp and gold
And now onto my favourite RPG ever! BOF III here we go!
I've been replaying it with a proper translation, and it feels like a completely different game.
FYI: Rand’s “wake” ability can actually resurrect knocked out party members.

I’ll be blunt, I downloaded this game when it came out on the Wii Virtual Console because I liked Katt. Unfortunately, factors such as the absurdly high enemy encounter rate; items that did little to mitigate that; items that recovered MP at the expense of HP; and the lack of interesting combat and storytelling made me give up on it sometime after rescuing Bow.
I stopped playing after I got stuck in the High Fort.

Weirdly I got into this game as a kid. I liked all the art and the music. This was probably back in 96 or 97.

I have to disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed BoF 1, I just finished playing it again and are starting on BoF 2. It's been several years since I've played both games. Right away I noticed the lack of being able to customize the controller buttons like in the first game. Also you have to press the button to go through doors. I'm already not enjoying this game as much as the first one.

Towards the end of the game it gets REALLY grind heavy. You’ll be fighting battle after battle within a few steps and the item that’s supposed to “limit” the encounter rate DOESN’T work. Also I felt the music took a BIG hit in BoF2. The town music gets so annoying fast. BoF 1 had better music and sfx in my opinion.
I liked BoF 2. It had a good story about taking on a corrupt religion, there were loads of characters with lots of development, and it presented a reasonable challenge. What I didn't like was that sometimes, you had to do a quest with just one character, and maybe you didn't level that character up very much. Also, there were those commands unique to each character that were usually useless. However, I overall liked the game.
Story is probably best part of this game. I was vastly impressed when I find out that Ryu is technically a equivalent of Antichrist and whole game is plot to end the world. Even Final Fantasy didn't go that far.

Played the first one for SNeS and yeah the encounter rate is ridiculous. But with a little help from marbl3’s, it makes the game a whole lot more tolerable
So Ryu is a half dragon clan member so he is only able to hold on to his dragon form for a short time. In BOF your a full blooded and in BOF3 your full blooded Brood again that's the reason for a dragon attack and not a form.
just played this for the first time. what a strange game. its good, i liked it. aside from the encounter rate and honestly how they handled some of the characters. i didnt use Bow once. i hated him. then i found out he has cure 3. yay. what a jerk.

This game was very long for an SNES game. The only really issue I hated was the encounter rate was horrible.
This game was so much better than the original but man that translation was bad. I totally loved the cast's designs. Nina is a hottie in this game. Kat and Bleu 👌❤️

imo breath of fire IIs only downside is its waterdowned dragon system being the worse in the series if it wasnt for it theres a big chance it couldve overtaken final fantasy iv as my favorite game of all time after all breath of fire is my favorite gaming series of all time just barely beating out dragon quest i cant think of any other flaw to breath of fire ii i mean i love grinding its final boss isnt a rehash i vastly prefer hometown/township to the fairy village crap of iii and iv and it has my favorite incarceration of nina
